Maybe transfer Diamond Headz to Facebook or somewhere else?

2017-10-11 Thread Lakepipe
As Google Group seems to be falling by the wayside we're in danger of
losing touch. We could move to FB although not everybody is happy with
that. We could just start a [up to date format] Forum where we could chat?
Whatever? Thoughts. Just trying to keep the ol' dog[s] alive

Yep, that sums it up for me really. Obviously a very talented guy but just
left me cold I'm afraid. Bowie's demise was much more of a shock and loss
for me but even then the outpouring was just overwhelming. I wasn't his
friend [surprise!] or relative so while I was sad that he left us, and I
spun a few favourite DB discs, that was it for me. I wasn't grief stricken.
I just don't seem to have the 'connection' to these guys and gals that some
have. Facebook is full of "my life has been totally changed", "He was the
greatest musician ever and I don't know what I'm going to do now",
"worldwide music has been completely ruined" etc etc. Music is a part of my
life [an important one no doubt] but it is only a part. Anyway, onwards!

Re: American Idol's "Who Gives a Crap?!?" Tour cancelled!!

2016-04-04 Thread Lakepipe
I know this is heresy but music is just not [as] important as it was to us.
My 25 year old son is switched on and has a career in the Navy as a
helicopter engineer. He listens to music but without the 'intensity' that
we do. He enjoys it and goes to a couple of Festivals and has Spotify but
can take it or leave it really. Back in the day, for instance, if I
discovered an artist new to me I would search out other stuff by them. He
doesn't, he listens and enjoys now [if you see what I mean]. I can't think
that he ever listens to the radio [sorry Lee]. There are loads of other
outlets for his interest and music is just one of them.

I used to buy the NME and read 80% of it, EVERY week. To think my nipper
would even bother with that is laughable. I think music is moving to being
in the background and part of the wide tapestry of computer games,
Facebook, Twitter [whatever the fuck that IS], on-demand TV, films etc
etc

I think we should face up to the fact that, for the vast majority, music is
now wallpaper. The rise of tribute bands is a facet of that. Why the FUCK
would I want to pay good beer tokens to see somebody else do shit cover
versions of a band's material when I can watch a DVD or listen to an album
of the real thing? Mystifying to me That recent Bowie 'tribute' [the
one with "legend" Debbie Harry] was just unwatchable. Who was that asshat
doing [murdering more like] Heroes???

Anyway, onwards

It's curious and one of the reasons that I take a keen [but distant]
interest in US politics. With no exceptions on our many trips to the US we
have always met with great people but then we're lefties so are unlikely to
chase down the pinheads. We're back in the US in May [Chicago and
Indianapolis] and by then the field will be narrowed. My view at the mo' is
that Trump may well win the early primaries but has no chance when the full
caucus is taken into account. The Hilary email stuff is just puff and she
will win and, possibly, have Berny as VP. We'll see and I love it!

Re: Lemmy's gone!

2015-12-31 Thread Lakepipe
Saw Hawkwind around 1972. The 'well rounded' lady who danced at different
times throughout the concert was the thing my 16 year old brain registered.
I couldn't believe that she was virtually naked. My experience of topless
women was, ahem, limited at the time. Also Michael Moorcock came on halfway
through to read poetry by torchlight. He was booed of stage. I then saw
Motorhead in London 1980 around the release of Ace of Spades. Memorable
only for the guy in cut offs in the row ahead who vomited in a REALLY
spectacular way over everybody in front of him. We left then. I can still
smell it now...

I would say, with all the outpouring regarding his passing, if everybody
who says that they 'partied' with Lemmy actually *did, *he must have had
trouble even breathing.

Mike said anything goes...

2015-11-17 Thread Lakepipe
.

*I’ve thought long and hard about posting my thoughts on Paris and the
other recent terrorist acts and I’ll probably regret it now anyway. I say
this from a point of an atheist lefty, a position which I’m happy with. If
religion is your thing, good luck to you and you should have the freedom to
practice it to your hearts content, when and wherever you wish, and not be
discriminated against. I’m pleased if it gives you happiness and sanctuary.
It’s not for me though and I would appreciate respect for this point of
view.*

*It seems to me that if a group of people committed an act of barbarity and
then promptly announced that it was in the name of Catholicism, the Pope
would stand up, along with a large number of the 1.2 billion Catholics in
the world, and say, **“**not in our name**”**. I’d expect the main streets
of the world to be full of angry people distraught that their religion was
being misrepresented [including by knee jerk media and smear campaigns] and
giving the perpetrators nowhere to hide. After all, if you’re religious
then I guess this would be REALLY important to you. I guess the same would
happen if someone started a “Bombing for Jesus” campaign. Much as some want
to paint all Muslims as terrorists, that is [and these dimwits actually do
know this, they’re just trying to be ‘big men’] palpable bollocks. If all
1.5 billion Muslims were terrorists we’d all be dust by now. I’m positive
that 99.% of people of this faith are appalled by these acts of wanton
destruction. These acts are not purely aimed at Westerners, I see that one
of the premises attacked on Friday has been owned by a Muslim family for 40
years, they are criminal acts by criminals using Islam as a shield in order
to divide their ‘audience’. I have no idea of their motivation which makes
it nigh on impossible to fathom a solution but if 1 billion people stood up
and said “not in my name” surely this may help to undermine their
‘legitimacy’? This isn’t an anti-Muslim criticism it’s just something that
just confuses me………*

*…..and while we’re at it, what is it with the ‘Jihadi John’ tabloid crap?
The guy’s name is Mohammed Emwazi and he is [or was] an alleged criminal
terrorist & murderer and should be referred to as such. Giving him a folksy
nickname gives him legitimacy, ‘fame’ and a stature that he certainly
doesn’t merit.*

Re: What Would Mike Do? DIAMOND HEADZ passes away for the 2nd time this week!!

2015-10-01 Thread Lakepipe
Hi t

Time just moves on I guess. I watch HD movies streamed over the net, I no
longer have a mobile 'phone the size of a brick, my car is economical and
turns its own headlights on, I can exchange pictures and chat with my son
in the Navy wherever in the world he is instantly, I listen to WAY more
music through Spotify and read many more books using my Kindle, blah, blah.
I love this expansion of the periferal parts of my life. The core of my
family life is the same as it was and is unaffected [although sometimes
enhanced].

It's a shame that this form of interaction has fallen into disuse but then
I couldn't book a hotel in Arizona in 30 seconds from the UK 15 years ago.
Facebook, like anything it's used properly, a great source of interaction.
I've met up with 2 significant groups of friends after 35 years and it
helped massively with our 3 week trip around the US last year. I'm not here
to promote FB but in some ways with tech like this it's a bit like good ol'
King Canute.

I hope that we can find a way to keep in touch but things are what they
are...

I’m sad to hear about Jack Rieley passing away last Friday. Jack was our
manager in the early 1970s and helped us a lot. He wrote the lyrics for “A
Day in the Life of a Tree” which blew me away. I also had Jack sing the
lead on that one because his voice seemed to fit the song. Jack was a real
force on our “Surf’s Up” and “Holland” albums and I’ll always remember his
kindness. My thoughts go out to Jack’s family and friends.

 – Love and Mercy, Brian

 What a terrible loss.

Jack's arriving on the scene was one of the VERY BEST things that ever
happened for both the Beach Boys and the fans. His guidance made them legit
in a fast-changing atmosphere which had left the group fruitlessly gasping
in its wake. No way they'd be around and touring today without his
understanding, comprehension, knowhow and expertise. And we would likely
never have seen or heard BWPS, let alone Smile, if Jack hadn't planted
 seeds.

The worst thing that EVER happened to the Beach Boys? Jack left.

And now he's gone for good.

I wish I could have thanked him for all he did. Next to Brian...Jack is as
important as ANYONE in terms of the group's long-term success. He built a
foundation for them that even 'they' couldn't completely fuck up.

Casey Kasem, king of the top 40 countdown, dead
 BY ANTHONY MCCARTNEY

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Casey Kasem, the internationally famous radio
broadcaster with the cheerful manner and gentle voice who became the king
of the top 40 countdown with a syndicated show that ran for decades, died
 Sunday. He was 82.

Danny Deraney, publicist for Kasem's daughter, Kerri, says Kasem died
Sunday morning. A statement issued by the family says he died at 3:23 a.m.
 surrounded by family and friends.

Kasem's American Top 40 began on July 4, 1970, in Los Angeles. The No. 1
song on his list then was Mama Told Me Not to Come, by Three Dog Night.

The show continued in varying forms - and for varying syndicators - until
his retirement in 2009. In his signoff, he would tell viewers: And don't
forget: keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.

In recent years, Kasem was trapped in a feud between his three adult
children and his second wife, former actress Jean Kasem. In 2013, his
children filed a legal petition to gain control of his health care,
alleging that Kasem was suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease and
that his wife was isolating him from friends and family members. Kasem also
suffered from Lewy Body Disease, a form of dementia.

A judge in May temporarily stripped his wife of her caretaker role after
she moved him from a medical facility in Los Angeles to a friend's home in
Washington state. Jean Kasem said she moved her husband to protect his
privacy and to consult with doctors. Casey Kasem developed a severe bedsore
while in Washington and was in critical condition by the time he was
 hospitalized in early June.

It was a sad, startling end for a man whose voice had entertained and
 informed music lovers worldwide.

Kasem's American Top 40 began on July 4, 1970, in Los Angeles, when the
No. 1 song was Three Dog Night's cover of Randy Newman's Mama Told Me Not
to Come. The show expanded to hundreds of stations, including Armed Forces
Radio, and continued in varying forms - and for varying syndicators - into
the 21st century. He stepped down from American Top 40 in 2004 and
retired altogether in 2009, completing his musical journey with Shinedown's
 Second Chance.

While many DJs convulsed their listeners with stunts and morning zoo
snarkiness, Kasem would read long distance dedications of songs sent in
by readers and introduce countdown records with sympathetic background
 anecdotes about the singers.

The idea from the beginning was to do the type of thing on radio that Ed
Sullivan did on television, good, honest stories with human interest, he
told the Los Angeles Times in 1975.

Succeeding him at the main American Top 40 show in 2004 was
multiplatform star Ryan Seacrest, who has said he had been a fan of Kasem
since boyhood and would imitate him in pretend countdown broadcasts at age
 9.

Kasem's legacy reached well beyond music. His voice was heard in TV
cartoons such as Scooby-Doo (he was Shaggy) and in numerous commercials.

They are going to be playing Shaggy and Scooby-Doo for eons and eons,
Kasem told The New York Times in 2004. And they're going to forget Casey
Kasem - unless they happen to step on his star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame. I'll be one of those guys people say `Who's that?' about. And someone
else will say, `He's just some guy who used to be on the radio.'

The son of Lebanese immigrants, Kasem was active in speaking out for
greater understanding of Arab-Americans - both on political issues
involving the Mideast and on arts and media issues.

Arab-Americans are coming out of the closet, Kasem told The Associated
Press in 1990. They are more outspoken now than ever before. People are
beginning to realize who they really are, that they are not the people who
yell and scream on their nightly newscast.

Kasem was born Kemal Amin Kasem in 1932 in Detroit. He began his
broadcasting career in the radio club at Detroit's Northwestern High School
and was soon a disc jockey on WJBK radio in Detroit, initially calling
 himself Kemal Kasem.

In a 1997 visit with high school students in Dearborn, Michigan, home to a
large Arab-American community, he was asked why he changed his name to
 Casey.

It didn't sound like a deejay; it wasn't hip. So we decided I'd be `Casey
at the Mike' - and I have been since, Kasem said.

In the 1975 Los Angeles Times interview, he said he had been doing a
regular screaming DJ show in San Francisco in the early 1960s when his
boss suggested he talk about the records instead.

He was unconvinced, since his screaming routine had brought him top
ratings. But he said he had learned after a particularly unpleasant
situation in Buffalo never to argue

 Justin Bieber

Arrested for DUI Drag Racing and Resisting Arrest

Justin Bieber was arrested for DUI early Thursday morning and it wasn't
pretty -- cops say Justin was wasted and resisted arrest and cussed the cop
out, dropping multiple F bombs ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement tells us ... Bieber was busted in Miami Beach and it
didn't end with DUI ... he was also busted for resisting arrest without
violence, drag racing and driving on an expired license.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... they believe Justin was under the
influence of both drugs and alcohol.

According to the police report -- obtained by TMZ -- cops approached
Bieber's car and they instantly realized he reeked of alcohol and had
bloodshot eyes. He had a stupor look on his face.

The police report says ... Bieber was defiant from the get-go, yelling at
the cops, Why the f**k are you doing this? He also yelled, What the
f**k did I do. Why did you stop me?

When the officer tried to perform a routine pat down, Bieber said, I
ain't got no f**king weapons, why do you have to search me? What the f**k
is this about? Bieber claimed he wasn't drunk and coming back from
recording music. That's not true, because we knew he was at a club.

Now the basis for the resisting arrest charge -- Before the pat down, as
Bieber got out of the car, he kept going into his pants pocket. The cop
ordered him to put his hands on the vehicle, and Bieber initially complied
but soon took his hands off the car, turned and then cussed out the
cop. The cop then grabbed Justin by the right arm, Justin pulled his arm
away, and said, What the f**k are you doing?

The report says Justin was driving between 55 and 60 MPH in a 30 MPH
 residential area.

Bieber is now in custody and is at the police department where he is being
tested -- presumably to more precisely measure his blood alcohol level.
Our law enforcement sources say Justin was given a field sobriety test at
 the scene ... and failed.

His next stop will be jail, where he will be booked and processed and bail
 will be set.

We're told Bieber had just left SET nightclub and was driving a yellow
Lamborghini at the time cops spotted him in a residential neighborhood.
Our sources say Justin's people actually blocked the street off so Bieber
 could drag race.

Sources say the person Justin was racing was also arrested. We're told
that driver was Khalil, a well-known rapper on Def Jam Records. He was in
 a red Ferrari.

Justin had a passenger in the car -- *Chantel Jeffries -- a model, who's
dated multiple celebs including an NFL
 superstar*http://www.tmz.com/2014/01/23/justin-bieber-arrest-model-desean-jackson-chantel-jeffries-passenger-dated-nfl-superstar/
 .

The traffic stop was for drag racing and cops determined he was driving
 under the influence.

BBs at JazzFest

2012-05-10 Thread Lakepipe
Comments from the NO JazzFest Forums...

I'm a big BBs fan and thought it was really good, up to a point.
Harmonies were fine, setlist was pretty solid (though they're doing
two sets in most cities which allows for more deep cuts), and it was
definitely a kick to see them up there together. On the minus side,
Brian was a little absent (which is NOT always the case), and there
was way too much fussing over John Stamos. And I thought it was pretty
odd that there were no dedications to Carl and Dennis. But hey, it's
the Beach Boys-- they're an eternal soap opera, you take what you can
get.

Brian's seeming detachment from the whole thing was a bit
disconcerting, but I was told after by an insider that the big issue
for him was that where he was set up at the piano the sun was directly
pounding on him, right in his eyes... the others were in the shade,
but he couldn't escape.

It seems a bit ironic that a band known for beach music could be
derailed by too much sunshine.

Brian was on the far left of the stage out front and he did have the
sun directly in his face. I could see him struggling with it, at times
trying to shield his eyes. Tough to play piano with one hand. A very
solid set and the band was tight overall, but I am fairly convinced
that some of Mike Love's vocals were not live. I watched with great
intent both he and how the camera would show him singing and I have to
believe that there was some lip synching going on. I could be
mistaken, but that is my belief. Everyone and everything else seemed
to be live.
It depends on how close you are to the speakers. I noticed this a lot
of times at the Acura Stage. There is a delay between when a word is
spoken and when you hear it...The screen shows the mouth moving before
you actually hear the sound.

Dave and I both noticed that too. Mercifully, someone finally brought
him some sunglasses.

But it seemed to me that they had his meds dialed a bit too high. He
was completely wooden. Someone was definitely on top of his mics and
music in the mix, and would turn down the sound when he got off key or
played the wrong notes. One of my more hilarious camp-mates said there
were people underneath him moving his hands with sticks, and that
funny/sad image stayed with me the whole set. I was surprised,
however, how good the rest of the group sounded. It was a fun
singalong for everyone in the crowd.
