[MOPO] REISSUES

2007-05-23 Thread Michael B
YOU KNOW IT IS A GREAT TITLE WHEN THE REISSUES COST A LOT.

Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, and some hitchcock come to mind.

A year ago, a purchased a mint CASABLANCA reissue. i hated it couldn't
look at without thinking it was a reissue. resold it on ebay, and made
about 30.00

However, i do own the Rebecca half sheet reissue of 1948. I bought it in
the first batch of posters i acquired, 20+ years ago. Probably ripped off at
the timei paid $40.00. I have seen it sell for 350+. (this is the
EARLIER reissue).

So many of my originals have their reissue counterparts going for nice
bucks--

And so many reissues look better than the original!!!

Presently on ebay, there are about 3 reissues of posters of which i want the
originals. but, i will still wait.

reissues are still just thatnot from original runs... plus, some
of the later reissue posters from such films as GWTW, or OZ contain
terrible artwork, bad photos, or the infamous floating head
technique, where actors faces, alone, are among the tiltes, artwork,
etc. i saw one OZ reissue, and the photo of judy garland was a shot
of her at least 5-10 years OLDER. makes no sense. the reissue art
also seems to lack, as well.

just my thoughts..

Re: [MOPO] REISSUES

2007-05-23 Thread Susan Heim
There are some reissues that are more costly than the originals. The Asphalt
Jungle comes to mind since the reissue has Marilyn on it. The original is
somewhat lackluster anyway. There are also some reissues that have nicer
layouts than the originals. Of course, I can't think of one while I'm sitting
here (brain freeze and the fact that I'm getting old!). I do own that
Casablanca reissue that Michael spoke of, kind of a red duotone. I like it and
since I didn't have the sense to buy Casablanca for $50 thirty years ago (I
wanted It's a Wonderful Life more at the time, probably still would), my
reissue will have to do!!

Re: [MOPO] REISSUES

2007-05-23 Thread Doug Taylor
I own 3 reissues, 2 of which seem to have some value:

1. Cat People R52 - because the artwork is pretty good.not as good as the
original release, but pretty darn good

2. Walking Dead R42 - this is just one of my all-time favorite posters.the
artwork is great and the deco style fits my personal taste

3. Grand Hotel R5? - I bought this only because the artwork is the same as
my original 1932.the 1932 has blue background, while the reissue has red
background

That is all.

I think the most familiar case of vintage re-issue posters -- during the
past 10 years -- zooming past originals in value -- would be the 1966
one-sheet to 1959's North by Northwest. Another example would be the 1972
re-issue of Easy Rider.

[MOPO] RE REISSUES

2007-05-23 Thread Flixspix

MOPO'ERS

The reissue for THE HUSTLER runs twice to three times the original

SUSPICION the paper from this re-release has tripled in price from just
two years ago. Infinitely better art work Heritage Auctions has really
ushered in the irrefutable success on this paper

One Eyed Jacks...on a much smaller lever the original onesheet is in
dull sepia and the re-release with exact same art is in color. So instead of
a $50 poster its a $100 poster.

Casablanca now I am referencing Italian paper here but the 1960's paper
still can choke most people's budgets with photobustas commanding over a
1000 and the two or four foglios commanding over 5 grand which considering
how recent is mind boggling but admittedly beautiful paper.

The Wizard of Oz re-issue was an interesting campaign by MGM capitalizing
on Garland's popularity as an adult singer and entertainer just a decade or
so later. Inserting her image at the time of the re-issue was to attract
those new fans of hers to see her in an older film. Remember, WIZARD OF OZ

in its original release was a disappointment at the boxoffice. In fact it
did not recoup its investment until its broadcast on television

My vote for the worst reissue poster from the best original issue -

Forbidden Planet followed by the Forbidden Planet MGM Children's
Matinee re-issue poster -

Whoops - I think I might have one of these awful re-issues up on Ebay.

How easy would it have been to put Robby on that 1960's paper!

What were they thinking!

[MOPO] DO YOU COLLECT PRESS KITS?

2007-05-23 Thread Dave Smith
Hi -

DO YOU COLLECT PRESS KITS? If so and you are looking to add to your collection,
I have literally THOUSANDS. Most are from the 80's and 90's and are the ones
with the folder, paperwork, 8x10 black and white glossy stills and some have
color slides.

If you are looking for a certain TITLE or a certain ACTOR / ACTRESS or
DIRECTOR, please email me and I'll let you know what I have and at what price.

Couple things I would like to mention:

 - Please don't ask me to scan the stills. Too much work and I cannot do that.
 - If you ask me numerous actors, it would help if you tell me titles you
already have or DON'T want.
 - Pricing depends on title and number of stills but I am very reasonable
 - I do have a bunch of recent press kits from the 2000's that have the CD rom
and case but no stills. Those are available as well (but I do not have
Spiderman or Pirates of the Caribbean)!
 - Obviously I will combine shipping if you buy more than one and I will try to
give one price that will be based on weight

 - I am always buying as well so if you have some you may want to sell, please
let me know. I like to buy in bulk and prefer the older ones with the stills
included.

I will eventually be listing these slowly on Ebay but I wanted to give MOPO
first look.

Thanks!

Dave Smith

The fact that some reissues are nicer than the originals, is also true with
Lobby Cards.
Some are also more expensive and/or harder to find.
Titles coming to mind are THE HUSTLER, WEST SIDE STORY, KING CREOLE, and THE

[MOPO] 'Star Wars' fans get marathon screening

2007-05-23 Thread Movielegends
  http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070523/ap_en_mo/star_wars_marathon

LOS ANGELES - Seventeen hours in a darkened theater not so far away? Welcome
to the Star Wars marathon.

A free showing of all six Star Wars movies began Wednesday morning at the
Los Angeles Convention Center and was expected to end at 2 a.m. Thursday.

The event kicked off a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the release of
the original film.
Several thousand people showed up for the screening, which included brief
intermissions.
Because the saga spans 30 years, it spans multiple generations of fans as
well, event spokesman Jonathan Zaleski said. There are people in costume,
families. It's an interesting mix.

You get the usual assortment of Storm Troopers running around, he added. I
imagine it's pretty uncomfortable to sit for 17 hours encased in plastic.

Lucasfilm Ltd. supplied the digital prints for the movies and is involved in
Star Wars Celebration IV at the Convention Center. That event, open to fan
club members Thursday and to the paying public Friday through Monday, was to
include costume contests, exhibitions of movie props, autograph opportunities
from Star Wars celebrities and even a Storm Trooper Olympics.

Re: [MOPO] REISSUES

2007-05-23 Thread Bob Brooks
Sure, everyone picks out all the more popular re-issues (just waiting for
Harold Maude and we'll be complete)... ;o)

I avoid reissues like the plague, but there are some exceptions:

Walkabout has a really nice later reissue using the key art that they didn't
use for the original.

A Clockwork Orange has not one, but two re-issue one sheets that are much
better than the original.

Depending on how you look at it, half the posters from the greatest poster
release of all time could be called re-issues (2001 a Space Odyssey).

The rerelease of Singin' in the Rain, although very similar to the original, is
slightly more appealing.

More recently, Donnie Darko's rerelease was slightly better than the original
poster (although, neither of them can hold a candle to the pre-release poster).

Cheers,

Bob

  Subject: [MOPO] REISSUES

YOU KNOW IT IS A GREAT TITLE WHEN THE REISSUES COST A LOT.

Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, and some hitchcock come to mind.

A year ago, a purchased a mint CASABLANCA reissue. i hated it
couldn't look at without thinking it was a reissue. resold it on ebay, and
made about 30.00

However, i do own the Rebecca half sheet reissue of 1948. I bought it in
the first batch of posters i acquired, 20+ years ago. Probably ripped off at
the timei paid $40.00. I have seen it sell for 350+. (this is the EARLIER
reissue).

So many of my originals have their reissue counterparts going for nice
bucks--

And so many reissues look better than the original!!!

Presently on ebay, there are about 3 reissues of posters of which i want
the originals. but, i will still wait.

[MOPO] LAMP NEWS - COME SEE US AT CINEVENT

2007-05-23 Thread Sue

LAMP NEWS

Welcome New LAMP Dealer - Julien's Auctions

Darren Julien is the founder of Julien's. Julien's began selling
entertainment memorabilia in an online partnership with Sothebys.com in
2002 through online auctions featuring the collections of Muhammad Ali,
Madonna, Seinfeld, X-Files and Blackstone Magic memorabilia in 2002.
Julien's first live auction in September of 2003 presented a combination
of Hollywood and Music memorabilia with sale highlights including The
Ten Commandments tablets ($35,000), and George Harrison's Fender
Telecaster from Let It Be ($440,000). Julien's experience and
expertise in the field of entertainment memorabilia has already
established them as the premiere venue for the sale of property in this
market.

JULIEN AUCTION'S SUMMER ENTERTAINMENT SALE

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 10:00 am PST - Julien's
Auctions will present its annual summer sale featuring 327 lots from
entertainment's greatest legends with over 125 rare movie posters, lobby
cards and inserts. This auction includes: 1933 King Kong French 2
Panel, French 1 Panel and photo stills; Marilyn Monroe movie posters and
other memorabilia; great Hitchcock movie posters, Gone with the Wind;
Breakfast at Tiffany's and much more. For a look at all the great
pieces being offer, click HERE
http://search.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws/search/LiveAuctionSearch?ahid=3052ccn=Entertainmentfis=1frts=150getresult=lc=1sacti=21880.

We're Going to Cinevent

We are on our way to Columbus, Ohio for Cinevent, May 25-28. We will be
setting up a LAMP Exhibit with flyers, coupons and brochures from all of
our great LAMP Dealers. In addition to demonstrating the LAMP reference
site and the Image Archive and Database, we will also be unveiling two
new websites in the LAMP Family. THESE ARE STILL IN BETA TESTING BUT
VISITORS THERE WILL GET A PEEK AT THE EARLY VERSIONS.

 LAMP DEALERS MARKET SALES HISTORY

This is what all dealers and collectors have been waiting for. This
online website will feature: (1) tens of thousands of posters available
FOR SALE by our reputable LAMP dealers; and (2) hundreds of thousands of
actual poster SALES from our LAMP dealers as well as auctions houses and
other reliable sources. Because of the amount of misrepresentation
found on online auctions such as eBay, eBay figures WILL NOT be included
unless they are from a LAMP Approved source.

POSTER RESTORATION SITE

This site has been in the process for some time. We are now happy to
report that many of our great LAMP restorers are contributing articles,
including ways that collectors can make MINOR repairs to inexpensive
posters. We are extremely grateful that these restoration experts are
willing to share their expertise with our website visitors.

As a special bonus to Cinevent attendees, we are giving a free original
one sheet to collectors who come by and visit us at the booth!

IF YOU'RE GOING TO CINEVENT, BE SURE TO VISIT US. WE WILL BE ON THE
SIXTH FLOOR, COLUMBUS ROOM, TABLES 140-141.

Re: [MOPO] REISSUES

2007-05-23 Thread Ari Richards
I dont think there is anything wrong with reissues, so long as they are
decribed as such.
Sometimes they are nicer, sometimes not.
Sometimes the lesser value outweighs the lesser appeal

I am glad Bob Mentions Walkabout. MAN thats a great film. Personally I havent
seen a poster that REALLY does it justice. The Aussie 1 sheet i like, but like
CARS THAT ATE PARIS - to me, there is no poster that really captures how
fantastic the film is.

Recently on NS4 we had some discussion regarding another classic Aussie film,
and its reissue poster.

If it wasnt for reissues I wouldnt have half the Val Lewton posters and cards I
do have, so I LOVE THEM.

Cheers,

Bob

That's another one...while I love and own the original Saul Bass West
Side Story one sheet, the 1968 reissue is very nice also. The Hustler reissue
is much more indicative of the film content and, hence, I get a lot more
requests for that reissue than the original.

The fact that some reissues are nicer than the originals, is also true with
Lobby Cards.
Some are also more expensive and/or harder to find.
Titles coming to mind are THE HUSTLER, WEST SIDE STORY, KING CREOLE, and THE

Some of the KINO reissues are great too, classic films, nice art, and
affordable.
I'd rather aspend $30 on a reissue, than $10 on a repro.
