Re: [mou-net] Kinnickinnic River Bald Eagle Stoop and Fish Capture
I know it's Wisconsin but just had to report the great eagle drama I saw while kayaking the Kinnickinnic River below River Falls, Wisconsin. An immature bald eagle dove into the river in front of me at considerable speed, produced a sizeable splash, and emerged with its neck and head just above the surface of the water. It then raised its wings above the surface, struggled to flap them in a seemingly futile effort to take flight, and then, almost impossibly did take off with a sizeable fish in it talons. The eagle struggled to gain altitude and make headway with its wiggling catch but then, with the speed and height it finally gained, flew off out of sight down river. This all occurred in matter of 25 to 35 seconds. Kingfishers, goldfinches, ospreys and cedar waxwings were the other birds I saw without the binoculars I left behind not knowing how challenging the rapids were going to be. Other birds seen or heard (forgot my binocs in my haste to get on the trail at 4:30 p.m.) were sandhill cranes, wood ducks, cormorants, chickadees, robins, red wing black birds and blue winged teal. Note the long absent bridge(s) on the south end of the trail have finally been replaced but the causeway/dam across the north end of the Louisville Swamp lake has been breached and can no longer be crossed (to the Jabs Farm site), which turned my 4 1/2 mile hike into a 7 mile one. [mou-net] Open House on Trail Plans for Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge at Cedar Avenue
Those of you who bird the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge at Cedar Avenue may be interested in attending one of two open houses the DNR is holding on plans to build a bike trail between the Cedar Avenue and Lyndale Avenue accesses. The DNR press release with the details is below. The first open house is this Thursday, June 14. They have already had at least one meeting with representatives of recreational stakeholders and another will, if has not already occurred, be held with representatives of environmental stakeholders. What little details came from that first meeting was that a 14 foot right of way will be cleared for the 10 foot wide paved trail and it will impact some of the existing wetland based on current routing. . News Release DNR to hold open houses on Minnesota Valley State Trail plans June 1, 2018 The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold two open houses this summer to provide an update on plans for developing the Bloomington segment of the Minnesota Valley State Trail. Both public meetings will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in Bloomington: - Thursday, June 14, Bloomington Public Works Building, 1700 W. 98th St. - Wednesday, July 18, Bloomington Civic Plaza in the City Council Chambers, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road. The open houses will provide an opportunity to learn about the current status of the project and to provide feedback on the proposed trail layout. The DNR is particularly interested in public input related to trail design elements such as observation areas, interpretive and wayfinding signage, and other features that have not yet been added to the trail plan. There will be no formal presentation at the meetings, but DNR Parks and Trails Division staff will be on hand along with staff from the city of Bloomington to explain plans and answer questions. In 2014, the Minnesota Legislature appropriated roughly $2.2 million to develop a trail from the Bloomington Ferry Bridge to the Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge. Since then, the DNR has been consulting with the city of Bloomington, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others to plan a trail alignment, conduct environmental review and complete other tasks necessary before construction can begin. The Bloomington segment under development now is part of the Minnesota Valley State Trail, legislatively authorized in 1969 to run from Fort Snelling State Park to Le Sueur. More information on the project is available at www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_trails/minnesota_valley/plans.html <http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_trails/minnesota_valley/plans.html?utm_content=_medium=email_name=_source=govdelivery_term=> . [mou-net] Early spring birds at Afton State Park
Beat the rain and got in a 5.5 mile/2 hour hike at Afton State Park I heard but never saw an Eastern Meadowlark several times in the upland prairie. While looking at an oddly shaped mullen from last year with hopes that the bulge on top was the Meadowlark, I did see two sandhill cranes in the distance flying up the St. Croix River valley. I thought I heard killdeers at the bottom of the downhill ski area below the prairie portion of the trail but I later found myself doubting it. When I got down the hill to the river, I heard the skittering call of a Bald Eagle. I scanned down river from the beach and noticed a nest in a tree off the cove south of the beach. I missed the eagle sitting in the nest at first but caught sight of it when I rescanned. Later saw three more Eagles out on the ice north of the beach. They were adjacent to a small open channel - 1 mature and 2 mottled juveniles. Saw the usual chickadees and, just as I wondered why they weren't still around, a junco. As I came out of the trees on to the prairie after climbing out of the river valley, I came upon a flock of about 25 foraging Robins. When I reached the shelter at the intersection with trail circling the prairie, there were possibly the same flock of Robins in the tree next to shelter. As I walked past, I heard a noise that caused me to look around to find its source until I realized it was Robins that I had spooked and that had taken off simultaneously. As I departed in my car from the NW trail access, I drove the section of road immediately adjacent to nothe river that leads to downtown Afton and saw a Common Loon in the open water north of the ice where I previously saw the 3 eagles. [mou-net] Scarlet Tanagers in Roseville
While talking on the phone to my daughter in Boston, to my disbelief I spotted a possible Scarlet Tanager low down on the trunk of a tree in our back yard, across the street from the south side of Lake Owasso in Roseville. I raced to get my binoculars in the car in the garage and confirmed we had not one, but three Scarlet Tanagers in our back yard along with a couple of Baltimore Orioles. Couple of different warblers too likely a Pine and Yellow Rumped but too high up in the leaves for me to see them well enough in the rain. There are three very large beaked birds in a nest above the trail leading east from the Victoria Street parking lot, which is south of Co. Road C, to Lake Bennet. You can't miss the white wash on the trail below the nest as you approach the playground and Lake Bennett. The three large beaked birds are in the nest on a branch of a pine tree. There are no other nests that I know of nearby. I did n't know night herons were social nesters, so maybe they are green herons. it's just their beaks are so big relative to their bodies. Maybe it's deceptive because of their youth. ... [mou-net] Canada Geese Occupying Eagles Nest
On the west side of Lady Slipper Park in Roseville on South Owasso Blvd. approximately two blocks west of Rice St., we have been observing one or frequently two Canada Geese occupying an eagles nest. Last winter - 2022/23 - we had observed, a pair of Bald Eagles attempt to nest there but they abandoned after a late February/early March rain. Geese were subsequently on it a few times . This year we saw eagles on it a few isolated times but no apparent attempt to nest. This time the geese are almost certainly nesting on it because it seems to be occupied full time for at least a week now . If only one goose is on the nest, she? cannot always be seen because she? rests her head back on her body preventing viewing because of the height of the nest's edges. Is this unusual? It's hard to imagine the geese raising their young there since the goslings cannot fly for two to three months but usually leave the nest 1-2 days after hatching to swim and walk. Can they possibly survive a fall of 40 to 50 feet ala Wood Ducklings?
