Celebrated the end of our string of warm days with a late afternoon
kayak trip down the Mississippi River from the Coon Rapids Dam to 694.
Probably no surprise to those who know the area but I saw four mature
BALD EAGLES. One flew by me, two were roosting by their island nests
but the best was one standing on a rock just sticking out just above the
water level at the rapids below the U of M-owned island across from the
Izaak Walton League property. I was surprised at the absence of
migrating duck's - I saw just mallards and Canadian geese.

Re: [mou-net] Kinnickinnic River Bald Eagle Stoop and Fish Capture

2013-08-18 Thread Keith Carlson
I know it's Wisconsin but just had to report the great eagle drama I saw
while kayaking the Kinnickinnic River below River Falls, Wisconsin.

An immature bald eagle dove into the river in front of me at
considerable speed, produced a sizeable splash, and emerged with its
neck and head just above the surface of the water. It then raised its
wings above the surface, struggled to flap them in a seemingly futile
effort to take flight, and then, almost impossibly did take off with a
sizeable fish in it talons. The eagle struggled to gain altitude and
make headway with its wiggling catch but then, with the speed and height
it finally gained, flew off out of sight down river. This all occurred
in matter of 25 to 35 seconds.

Kingfishers, goldfinches, ospreys and cedar waxwings were the other
birds I saw without the binoculars I left behind not knowing how
challenging the rapids were going to be.

[mou-net] Yellow rumped warblers on ice

rumped warbler as I exited the floodplain portion of the Mazomani trail
just south of the glacial boldder in the Louisville Swamp MN Valley
Wildlife Refuge Unit near Chaska along with a sedge wren on Sunday. Other
birds seen or heard (forgot my binocs in my haste to get on the trail at
4:30 p.m.) were sandhill cranes, wood ducks, cormorants, chickadees,
robins, red wing black birds and blue winged teal. Note the long absent
bridge(s) on the south end of the trail have finally been replaced but the
causeway/dam across the north end of the Louisville Swamp lake has been
breached and can no longer be crossed (to the Jabs Farm site), which turned
my 4 1/2 mile hike into a 7 mile one. Despite the time of year, the entire
trail besides the breached causeway/dam was dry and easily passable.

[mou-net] Open House on Trail Plans for Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge at Cedar Avenue

2018-06-11 Thread Keith Carlson
Those of you who bird the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge at
Cedar Avenue may be interested in attending one of two open houses the DNR
is holding on plans to build a bike trail between the Cedar Avenue and
Lyndale Avenue accesses. The DNR press release with the details is below.
The first open house is this Thursday, June 14.

They have already had at least one meeting with representatives of
recreational stakeholders and another will, if has not already occurred, be
held with representatives of environmental stakeholders. What little
details came from that first meeting was that a 14 foot right of way will
be cleared for the 10 foot wide paved trail and it will impact some of the
existing wetland based on current routing.

.
News Release
DNR to hold open houses on Minnesota Valley State Trail plans

June 1, 2018

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold two open houses
this summer to provide an update on plans for developing the Bloomington
segment of the Minnesota Valley State Trail.

Both public meetings will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in Bloomington:

   - Thursday, June 14, Bloomington Public Works Building, 1700 W. 98th St.
   - Wednesday, July 18, Bloomington Civic Plaza in the City Council
   Chambers,
   1800 W. Old Shakopee Road.

The open houses will provide an opportunity to learn about the current
status of the project and to provide feedback on the proposed trail layout.

The DNR is particularly interested in public input related to trail design
elements such as observation areas, interpretive and wayfinding signage,
and other features that have not yet been added to the trail plan. There
will be no formal presentation at the meetings, but DNR Parks and Trails
Division staff will be on hand along with staff from the city of
Bloomington to explain plans and answer questions.

In 2014, the Minnesota Legislature appropriated roughly $2.2 million to
develop a trail from the Bloomington Ferry Bridge to the Minnesota Valley
Wildlife Refuge. Since then, the DNR has been consulting with the city of
Bloomington, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others to plan a trail
alignment, conduct environmental review and complete other tasks necessary
before construction can begin.

The Bloomington segment under development now is part of the Minnesota
Valley State Trail, legislatively authorized in 1969 to run from Fort
Snelling State Park to Le Sueur. More information on the project is
available at www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_trails/minnesota_valley/plans.html

[mou-net] Afton State Park birds & question about cold weather effects on bird activity level

2019-04-29 Thread Keith Carlson
Saw the following of note (to me) at Afton State Park, Afton, MN on Saturday

Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Yellow Bellied Sapsucker

I also hiked/birded the School Forest In Linwood, Anoka County on Sunday.
In both instances, I was really surprised about the quiet and inactivity of
the birds given the time of year. Did the cold and low pressure preceding
the rain contribute to that? I would have expected the woods to be alive
with the "peeps" of Yellow-rumped Warblers but I only heard a few (i think)
at Afton and the same at the School Forest where at least I saw one
juvenile. Other than that I heard a few Red-Bellied Woodpeckers and maybe
a Song Sparrow and heard and saw some Robins at Afton and heard and saw
some Robins at the Linwood School Forest besides hearing a few Yellow
rumped Warblers and seeing the one. Was it the weather? Or was it still a
little early for the Yellow-rumpeds?

Saw FOY Goldfinch in spring/summer colors in an Aspen tree on the berm on
the southern boundary along with some Yellow Rumped Warblers nearby. There
were a number of Red Wing Blackbirds sheltering in the trees and bushes on

of which perched on the boardwalk rail and would not move. It chose
instead to hiss at me as I gave it as wide a berth as possible while
walking by.

[mou-net] Andover, Anoka County birds

Got in a wonderful birding hike in the early spring snow at Martin's Meadow
Nature Preserve in Andover. Saw a number of fast-moving FOY Golden Crowned
Kinglets feeding with a couple of Yellow Rumped Warblers. Saw a very
cooperative FOY Hermit Thrush and Flicker as well as White Breasted
Nuthatch. A feeding flock of Robins rose to the trees as I worked to
spot the singing Cardinal behind them. Heard lots of Jays and a Wood
Duck. As I departed east on Anoka CR 7 in a cornfield to its south, I
found a Horned Lark, Trumpeter Swans, Canada Geese, a couple of Mallards
and, at the field's far wooded edge along with a number of deer, at least
three Sandhill Cranes.

[mou-net] Tundra Swan Overflight

2020-03-26 Thread Keith Carlson
An interesting overflight of 25 to 30 tundra swans occurred over my home
across the street from the south side of Lake Owasso in Roseville. about
6:00 pm. I heard and then found the flock flying westward in the
characteristic V formation. While trying to help my daughter see them while
following them through our tree branches, I temporarily lost sight of
them. When I refound them, the V had collapsed and the flock seemed to
become more vocal only to then reform back into a V formation and start
heading in a more northwesterly direction. Maybe they were considering
landing on the lake, which is partially open, and then decided to keep
going?

[mou-net] Early spring birds at Afton State Park

2020-03-28 Thread Keith Carlson
Beat the rain and got in a 5.5 mile/2 hour hike at Afton State Park I
heard but never saw an Eastern Meadowlark several times in the upland
prairie. While looking at an oddly shaped mullen from last year with hopes
that the bulge on top was the Meadowlark, I did see two sandhill cranes in
the distance flying up the St. Croix River valley. I thought I heard
killdeers at the bottom of the downhill ski area below the prairie portion
of the trail but I later found myself doubting it.

When I got down the hill to the river, I heard the skittering call of a
Bald Eagle. I scanned down river from the beach and noticed a nest in a
tree off the cove south of the beach. I missed the eagle sitting in the
nest at first but caught sight of it when I rescanned. Later saw three
more Eagles out on the ice north of the beach. They were adjacent to a
small open channel - 1 mature and 2 mottled juveniles. Saw the usual
chickadees and, just as I wondered why they weren't still around, a junco.

As I came out of the trees on to the prairie after climbing out of the
river valley, I came upon a flock of about 25 foraging Robins. When I
reached the shelter at the intersection with trail circling the prairie,
there were possibly the same flock of Robins in the tree next to shelter.
As I walked past, I heard a noise that caused me to look around to find its
source until I realized it was Robins that I had spooked and that had taken
off simultaneously.

As I departed in my car from the NW trail access, I drove the section of
road immediately adjacent to nothe river that leads to downtown Afton and
saw a Common Loon in the open water north of the ice where I previously saw
the 3 eagles.

likely a Pine and Yellow Rumped but too high up in the leaves for me to

There are three very large beaked birds in a nest above the trail leading
east from the Victoria Street parking lot, which is south of Co. Road C, to
Lake Bennet. You can't miss the white wash on the trail below the nest as

[mou-net] Would last Tuesday's rain cause Bald Eagles to abandon their nest and eggs

2023-02-18 Thread Keith Carlson
My wife and I had been observing one or the other of a pair of eagles
occupying the nest on the west side of Lady Slipper Park in Roseville for
at least a week preceding last Tuesdays' day-long rain. They have been
gone ever since. I assume they were incubating eggs but there was no way
for us to confirm whether it was that or caring for hatched babies because
of the height of the nest and its distance from the road. Regardless, the
day-long rain we had be enough to get eagles to abandon their nest?

[mou-net] Canada Geese Occupying Eagles Nest

2024-04-12 Thread Keith Carlson
On the west side of Lady Slipper Park in Roseville on South Owasso Blvd.
approximately two blocks west of Rice St., we have been observing one or
frequently two Canada Geese occupying an eagles nest. Last winter -
2022/23 - we had observed, a pair of Bald Eagles attempt to nest there but
they abandoned after a late February/early March rain. Geese were
subsequently on it a few times . This year we saw eagles on it a few
isolated times but no apparent attempt to nest. This time the geese are
almost certainly nesting on it because it seems to be occupied full time
for at least a week now . If only one goose is on the nest, she? cannot
always be seen because she? rests her head back on her body preventing
viewing because of the height of the nest's edges.

Is this unusual? It's hard to imagine the geese raising their young there
since the goslings cannot fly for two to three months but usually leave
the nest 1-2 days after hatching to swim and walk. Can they possibly
survive a fall of 40 to 50 feet ala Wood Ducklings?
