[Nagios-users] NDO 1.3.1

Re: [Nagios-users] Force notification?
Im sure others may have more information, but in order to create a notification you need to create a hard state change. Having said that, you would need to run some sort of check command that would check what you wanted, in your case it would be a number of named process. Mike -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Peter Lauda Sent: Wednesday, August 30, 2006 1:23 PM To: nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [Nagios-users] Force notification? have read as much doc on notifications as I can find. Everything refers to the idea that Nagios will send notifications for hosts or service that experience a HARD state change. Well, Ok... but I want to monitor a service, say a process by name on an nrpe monitored server. If the number of that named process drops below X I want to get a notification. Is this possible or is there some way that I can force that situation to CREATE a HARD state change? I always see it in the logs as a SOFT change and of course, no notification. [Nagios-users] NDO Services
Title: NDO Services Hello, Im looking at implementing syslog via Nagios in a distributed environment. I want to report historical information for network devices that output syslog information. Of course, I will be parsing out syslog information so I dont have a flood of traffic. I see how I can get the data to the Nagios central server, by using something like sec.pl, which will use the Nagios services, but when it goes to the NDO MySQL database, I think the ndo_servicestatus table gets updated, rather than appended to. Is there another way to send this type of data, and still keep a historical data via Nagios/NDO? I suppose I could use the ndo_logentries table, although it is very large. Re: [Nagios-users] NDO Services
Patrick, Sorry, it's been a long week. No hijacking here. Using SEC is already on my list, I suppose since Nagios would have a service configured to report (notification/status, etc) my question is regarding the data that will be sent to the NDO database. Once the database is populated, reporting historical records becomes an issue. My *REAL* question is which table would be best suited for reporting? It appears to me that using the ndo_servicestatus table gets updated, rather than appended, which makes sense. I suppose using the ndo_logentries table would work best. Maybe it's time for a beer.. maybe two. It sounds to me (and I could be wrong here) like you're trying to get Nagios to do something it's really not designed, or even fit, to do. Nagios is definitely *not* a syslog server. It's really good at notifying based on triggers in a log, but to actually *be* the log server? I have to wonder why you'd even try to do that when there are real logservers out there that support storing logs in databases (syslog-ng scomes to mind). You could then use sec to send status information to Nagios, and let it do what it's good at (tracking and notifying based on service states, and it would automatically save the Critical/Warning/Recovery states you sent it via NDO if you have it set up). You'd also have a real syslog server with a database back end, doing what it's good at. Trying to hijack nagios databases so you can force them to hold data they're not meant to hold just seems like a disaster in the making. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. [Nagios-users] Distributed Monitoring - Redundancy
Title: Distributed Monitoring - Redundancy Hello Everyone, Im running Nagios is a distributed environment which is working very well. I would like to add a little redundancy to the picture now that I have everything working. ;-) Since Im running a distributed environment, how can I add a secondary Central-Server to the picture? Im not worried about the sensors or remote Nagios servers, just the central portion of the network. The problems that I see are as follows: The remote servers send data via NSCA to the central server. Would they also have to send a second connection to the secondary server? NDO now sends data to my MySQL server, will the secondary server also need to send data? This opens a can of worms in terms of duplicate data, etc. It seems that a secondary cold spare might be the best solution. Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios update 2.4
Ravi, I have installed new, and performed an upgrade recently. The install new (tar ball and RPM) went fairly smooth. The main problem I had was that my configuration tool places the files in a different place, so I needed to link the nagios.cfg file, which wasnt a big deal. The upgrade was also fairly smooth, most the issues that I had again, were with the nagios.cfg file, only because of my environment. RE: [Nagios-users] Nagios with MySQL??
Jeffery, I'm using the eventbroker that Marc spoke of, which very well. For the configuration, you can look at NagiosQL. If you like writing in PHP, you *could* write your own interface, which depending on your PHP skills and needs could be as complicated or as easy as you like. [Nagios-users] NDO - Notifications
Hello Everyone, I was wondering I currently have Nagios configured to notify me after it has seen a problem twice, which means I have the retry value set to two. This works fine for me since I don't want to get notified if there is some sort of anomaly on the network. My issue is that Nagios is writing to the MySQL NDO tables. When I query the table for the current status, I see Critical for a particular host/service, but it appears to be seeing the FIRST attempt which is where I don't get notified, which is OK. I'm almost OK with living with it but would like NOT to see the Critical messages in NDO. Is there a configuration option that I am missing? RE: [Nagios-users] performance data reporting
Terry, I know for me, I would like to see something like an output of MRTG. I know I can integrate MRTG in some forms, but I would like to pull directly from the MySQL tables/columns, rather than using something like RRDTool, as I can get a better (longer) history using the MySQL database. This would make the distributed model work very well. If I look at the NDO tables, I see that there is a table called, NDO_SERVICECHECKS. It has few columns that I am using already, but I would like to have data in the Perfdata column. It could be that I am missing something here (It's not the first time ;-)) but I would think something like Perfparse would store data in this area, unless Nagios already has something that will put performance data in that area. PHP could generate graphs fairly easy, although I have not done much work like this myself; sample code is available in many places. [Nagios-users] The best way to test notifications
Hello all! I have a need to test notifications on a monthly basis. We have sections of our network that are very quiet; thusly we do not see any alerts from these sites. The way I have been testing notification is shutting down Nagios at the remote end and waiting for the notifications to start/end. It seems crude to me to perform this function in order to get a test notification. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Is this something that could be in 3.0? Thanks in advance, Mike
RE: [Nagios-users] Check_Log - SOLUTION
All, Thanks for all the help/information regarding this subject. I have found a solution that works in this case. The problem is that the % is a directive for printf. Since the % was in the string, printf thinks it should be a directive. Since I had no need for the % in the output string, I removed it. I changed the check_log script with the following: OLD: $ECHO ($count) $lastentry NEW: $ECHO ($count) $lastentry | /bin/sed 's/%//' I'm sure there is probably a more efficient way of doing this, but it was a quick fix for me. [Nagios-users] Syslog - Nagios?
I would like to send Syslog information from a remote Nagios sensor to the Central Server via NSCA, since its already in place. Im trying to see if there is a feasible way to parse out the information I need, using something like SWATCH and send it to the Central Server, who should be able to send it to a MySQL server. I was thinking that I might be able to write the parsed out information to the Nagios command file, but I dont think that would work. My thinking is that if it was written to the Nagios command file that I would be able to send it the parsed out information via the Nagios process, but I might be WAY off base. Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Thanks in advance, Mike

[Nagios-users] Nagios Hang?
Im running Nagios 2.0 (Stable) on Redhat 9.0, in a distributed environment. Im utilizing NSCA for checks and all appears to be working properly. Im running into several issues that seemed to have started all of a sudden. 1) On my distributed server, I dont see syslog messages any longer, with the exception of INITIAL SERVICE STATE messages. Syslog is working, and in the nagios.cfg file, nagios.cfg:use_syslog=1 I used to see all the check messages, etc. Nothing in the configuration has changed to the best of my knowledge. 2) Nagios appears to hang on the remote sensor. Once I receive notifications that network devices are down, I never see a recovery of the network devices, even though they are recovered. The work around is to restart nagios with service nagios restart. Sometimes, this takes multiple tries. 3) When I have a massive network outage, I receive the appropriate alerts but I receive multiple PROBLEM notifications. Im only using service checks (Im only using check_ping currently) and the notification_interval set to 0, which according to the documentation should limit the amount of messages Im receiving to 1, unless Im using the service escalations, which I am not at this time. I am not receiving multiple notifications for OK messages, which is what I would expect. Sorry about the novel but these have frustrated me into drinking lots of beer. Mike

They should only be used for services that automatically reset themselves to an OK state after being checked and you wish to be notified _every_ time they're checked and not OK. This would account for your multiple notifications. http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/volatileservices.html Volatile services differ from normal services in three important ways. Each time they are checked when they are in a hard non-OK state, and the check returns a non-OK state (i.e. no state change has occurred)... * the non-OK service state is logged * contacts are notified about the problem (if that's what should be done) * the event handler for the service is run (if one has been defined) These events normally only occur for services when they are in a non-OK state and a hard state change has just occurred. In other words, they only happen the first time that a service goes into a non-OK state. If future checks of the service result in the same non-OK state, no hard state change occurs and none of the events mentioned take place again. -- Marc --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. [Nagios-users] Network Mapping Software
Sorry if this a little off topic I was wondering if anyone knew of a network mapping tool. OpenSource is best, of course. I would like to integrate this into a MySQL/PHP/Nagios environment. Thanks in advance, Mike
RE: [Nagios-users] Nagios 2 with MySql support
Roberto, I have been using the NDOUTILS that is posted on the Nagios site. It works well, although some of the tables (columns) are incomplete. What I did for configuration is used my own tables (for now) and I use the NDO tables for the status/performance data. We use our own PHP interface so it works rather well. As soon as thing firm up in Nagios 3.0, I plan to migrate my system to the new tables for consistency reasons. I did a quick GOOGLE search and found NDOUTILS here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=26589 Thanks! Stop whining. I expect someone will develop an alternative using the new event broker sometime in the near future. Besides, DB support was not well implemented and dropping native DB support will make things easier for newbies to understand (one less thing to figure out). *** I'm quite new to Nagios but I know that in the last version (1.x) the integration with MySql was quite easy. Have someone an idea to integrate MySql with Nagios 2.x? Have someone a good doc? I found only: http://sourceforge.net/projects/nagios-db Any other ideas? Thanks a lot...
[Nagios-users] Send_NSCA - Segmentation Fault
I looked around (and maybe I missed it) for the following issue: 1) I have configured NSCA for XINETD on my central server without encryption. 2) I have configured SEND_NSCA on my remote sensor also, without encryption. All of this works without a hitch. Luckily, all of the equipment is in a lab environment. Im ready to deploy a server to a real remote site so I wanted to encrypt the traffic, so I configured BOTH the NSCA server and Send_NSCA for 3DES encryption. I restarted XINETD on the server. Now, when I send data from the remote server I see a Segmentation Fault and of course no data is sent through. All applications compiled without any warnings and appear to be executing fine with the exception of the encryption portion. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Mike

[Nagios-users] Immediate Check of service?
Hello All, I think this subject has been around the block a few times, but I'm still confused. I have a distributed model working in a lab environment but I see the following message on the Central Server. nagios: Warning: The results of service 'check_ping' on host 'Company-A-Switch-21' are stale by 60 seconds (threshold=420 seconds). I'm forcing an immediate check of the service. I currently am only using service checks, since (I think) it make sense for the environment that I will be using the distributed model. Host checks are disabled. I don't mind that fact that it comes up stale, but why force an immediate check of the service? Is there a way to turn this office since I'm in Passive Mode anyway? The situation would be that the Central Server does not have direct access to the remote network, but only receives data from each remote sensor. Thanks in advance, Mike Here is a snippet from my services configuration from the Central Server: define service { host_name Company-A-Switch-21 service_description check_ping is_volatile 1 check_command check-host-alive max_check_attempts 1 normal_check_interval 2 retry_check_interval1 active_checks_enabled 0 passive_checks_enabled 1 check_period24x7 parallelize_check 1 obsess_over_service 1 check_freshness 1 freshness_threshold 420 event_handler_enabled 1 low_flap_threshold 0 high_flap_threshold 0 flap_detection_enabled 1 process_perf_data 1 retain_status_information 1 retain_nonstatus_information1 contact_groups Support notification_interval 0 notification_period 24x7 notification_optionsw,u,c,r notifications_enabled 1 register1 } Here is a snippet from my services configuration from the remote sensor: define service { host_name Company-A-Switch-21 service_description check_ping is_volatile 0 check_command check_ping!100.0,20%!500.0,60% max_check_attempts 2 normal_check_interval 2 retry_check_interval1 active_checks_enabled 1 passive_checks_enabled 0 check_period24x7 parallelize_check 0 obsess_over_service 1 check_freshness 0 event_handler_enabled 0 flap_detection_enabled 1 process_perf_data 0 retain_status_information 1 retain_nonstatus_information1 contact_groups Support notification_interval 99 notification_period 24x7 notification_optionsw,u,c,r,f notifications_enabled 0 register1 } --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. I was wondering before I started coding, if anyone has written a plugin similar to check_snmp_int that will also retrieve the description that a user can enter for various interfaces? RE: [Nagios-users] Submit passive check result for a service sending out duplicate alert mails?
Karan, If this is a distributed monitoring setup, you will need to turn off notifications on the sensor at that is doing the checking. Notifications should be turned on the central server where Nagios/NSCA is accepting the checks. Thanks! RE: [Nagios-users] You don't have permission to access /nagios/cgi-bin/ on this server
Bob, This appears to be a permissions problem. It sounds as if you have nagios as a member of the apache group, but are you running nagios as nagios (user/group) Is Apache running as apache. You may also want to check the directories/files to ensure they are a part of correct group/ownership. I know this may sound simple, but it has bitten me more than once.
