[NTG-context] Ligature handling for PDF searching.
(This came up on comp.text.tex in a question about LaTeX, but it also applies to ConTeXt, and the proposed solution for LaTeX doesn't apply.) Consider the following document: \starttext Some ligature tests: ff, fi, ffi, fl, ffl. \stoptext If I process that with texexex -pdf, load it into Acrobat 5, and then copy-and-paste the text from the PDF into a text editor, the fi and fl ligatures are correctly treated as two letters, but the ff, ffi, and ffl ligatures are treated as single (unknown) characters. Similarly, searching for "f" within the document only finds the fi and fl ligatures; it doesn't find the others. Searching for "ff" finds nothing. This is a fairly significant problem in the on-screen usability of ConTeXt-created documents. In LaTeX, there is apparently a solution in the cmap.sty package (though it currently only works for T1 encoding): http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/cmap/ Is there a similar solution for ConTeXt? (Has this perhaps been solved with a later version of ConTeXt than I have on my computer?) Different ConTeXt versions also seem to be useful for all kinds of stuff: - browsing (& comparing) old source files - running live.contextgarden.net on older versions (in case the behaviour in the new version is changed) - (maybe donloading old ConTeXt versions for whatever reason?) - modules.pdf - test suite > * different test documents needed This can be done gradually. Of course, it is impossible to have a very good test suite, but at least some features can be tested; broken functionality would be noted much later otherwise (if ever). If you let the users add stuff, the suit will gradually grow. It would be much easier then to say "take a look: my document is OK with the version this-and-that, but since the version this-and-that something strange happens" when reporting a bug. (Perhaps testing documents should also have at least some very basic set of labels: very important to test, interesting test case, just temporary or one-time testing. Or at least some switch to leave the document there, but to remove it from the list of "test suite" when next ConTeXt version is out. 100 versions and 1000 documents ... can slow down your computer a bit.) > 1) user can select any combination of the above > 2) result (one page/png, more pages pdf) can be viewed or downloaded Converting multiple-page pdf to png-s should also be possible. I could provide some interface for documents connected to version numbers, so you could download a set of .tex files (or one big tex file) and the related pdf file, but we need to collect good examples. And I think that testing is very hard: there are so many different things in ConTeXt that can be tested, so the pdf would result in a few hundred pages. This should actually be the only proper way to number items in Slovenian, but you can imagine that nobody is able to use that since the beginning of computer era. As it happens, I've just been looking at the ConTeXt code for doing counters as characters, and it's really pretty simple: \def\character#1% {\ifcase#1\unknowncharacter \or a\or b\or c\or d\or e\or f\or g\or h\or i\or j\or k\or l\or m% \or n\or o\or p\or q\or r\or s\or t\or u\or v\or w\or x\or y\or z% \else \unknowncharacter \fi} (There's also an equivalent \Character for the uppercase letters.) All you need to do Solvenian ordering is to put a \ccaron in the list between c and d, and maybe call the macros "sloveniancharacter" and "slovenianCharacter" to keep them distinct. Then, when you want to specify a numbering format for an enumeration, you should be able to use "conversion=solveniancharacter" rather than "conversion=characters". This isn't quite a complete solution -- ConTeXt has some more code that defines a \characters macro (with the "s" on the end) that keeps counting after "z", as x, y, z, aa, ab, ac, and so on. Duplicating that requires only a little more work. - Brooks ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context
[NTG-context] "Very dirty" localisation request for a rainy evening
Hello Hans, Today I saw a webpage of someone, who is very active in the field of translation and localisation of free software into Slovenian. It astonished me the way he numered the items on his webpage: (a) approximation ... (b) Gauss ... (c) numerical solutions ... (č) solving parabolic ... % [\ccaron] (d) ... This should actually be the only proper way to number items in Slovenian, but you can imagine that nobody is able to use that since the beginning of computer era. (Another example is the usage of quotation marks: most people use the American quotation marks instead of the German ones just because MS Word defaults to that.) However, those people who really care, use the Slovenian alphabet when enumerating (manually, of course). I'm proud, for example, that I was in the class "1.Č" in the high school. Not right away, but any time in the future when unicode, fonts and similar will be updated/reimplemented/fully supported and when it will be raining cats and dogs and nothing interesting will be on TV: can you think on this this tiny request to switch to local enumeration if \mainlanguage[sl] (or any other language with a similar request) is selected? In a similar way as the sorting rules are applied in this kind of documents. (I'll take the response for "backward compatibility" issues (documents that now use enumeration a, b, c, d would use another enumeration afterwards) - if anyone would complain, he would have to talk to me first!!!) I don't know if there is any special agreement in case there are more than 26 items in the list, but sometimes a, b, ... x, y, z, aa, ab, ac, ... zz, aaa, aab, aac, ... is used. I never needed that many items until now, but the issue could theoretically be interesting for the others. Trying to use more than 26 items results in an arror at the moment. Re: [NTG-context] Position margin text block near previous paragraph
Just a quick comment, since I cannot try anything in LiveContext right at this time: What you want is the equivalent of LaTeX's \marginpar , which is really a \vtop whose beginning coincides with the beginning of the paragraph being \note[d]. I am thinking that this would be a good test case for Brooks Moses' LaTeX-to-ConTeXt set of macros. I will experiment with it tonight unless someone beats me to the punch :-) Best, elena ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context
[NTG-context] Position margin text block near previous paragraph
Hello! This time I have a task like this: I have margin text blocks (like Note, Tip) that follow some paragraph in my document flow. In the produced document I get them in margin, but vertically they are just below the paragraph (as in text flow) I really need then to start exactly where the previous paragraph starts (vertically). I.e. I need to move them several (unknown number) lines higher. My realization: \setupinmargin[style=\sl\tx\setupinterlinespace,location=left,align=right] \def\Note#1{ \strut \inmargin{ \em{#1} } \strut} \starttext This is the para with unknown length that can be any number of lines high. And I have a note below it that should be located to the left of this paragraph and not just below it. That's the case. \par \Note{ And here is the note that should be in margin.} \stoptext The easiest would to put it above the target paragraph, but that's not the solution for me as the same text is rendered to HTML where no margins exist. Can I do it plainly in tex code? Thanks a lot. I appreciate your help-- Regards.Eugene Toporov ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context

Steffen Wolfrum wrote: > Hi, > > it would be great if the \placefigure macro could be extended to > combinations like ... 1.) This is not exactly the same thing, but if we're talking about graphics: is it possible to include a figure (\externalfigure, perhaps withing \placefigure) in such a way that it fills exactly the remaining avalable space? factor=fit does almost exactly what I want, but it doesn't consider the space already taken by the preceeding text. If I wanted a figure to span over the whole presentation sheet, than factor=fit usually resulted in a caption on one page and a full-page figure on a new page. (I tuned the figure sizes manually, but that is not the proper way.) 2.) This is also something else, but what's the best way to write on pre-printed sheets of paper? Like honourable mentions and stuff like that. The lines are already given, so I would like the baseline (with name & surname for example) to be 0.5 mm above the line printed on paper, centered on that line (not necessary in the middle of the paper) I use \setupframed [align=middle, frame=off] \setlayerframed [page] [voffset=13.3cm, preset=leftbottom] [width=\paperwidth] {\MainFont #1} for that, but it doesn't take the baseline into consideration, so it has to be manually tuned for every line, every font & every font size (printed and compared if it looks OK). Yet another (probably doable, but more difficult to implement) request: there are for example five lines printed, with the distance of 13 mm and the width 10 cm (not necessary centered on the page). I would like to typeset a paragraph on them, so that the baseline of this text would be about 0.5 mm above the lines. I volunteer to write a MyWay if someone can help me with that. Actually, "\\" is a part of \fbox{\begin{tabular}[c]{l}1\\2\\3\end{tabular}}\par while I was talking about typesetting a midaligned parbox: \parbox[c]{1em}{1 2 3} So I have to say: no, there's no "\\" present in "\parbox[c]{1em}{1 2 3}". But please forget about different line-braking than in LaTeX \parbox. It may be that different parameters for penalties are set anyway. I mainly wrote this because of the problems in live.contextgarden.net which is not fixed yet (see http://contextgarden.net/Vertically_centred). However, some other questions arised here: 1.) I saw \hbox, \vbox, \vtop, \lbox, \cbox, \rbox, \sbox, \tbox, \bbox on page 106 of cont-eni.pdf. But if I understand it properly, there's no alternative to LaTeX \parbox command. 1.1.) After grep-ing the LaTeX tree for "\parbox", my disk ran out of space 1.2.) \bTABLE ... \eTABLE seems too complicated to me to be used for such a simple thing as asking for a paragraph of a certain width, centered with regard to the current line. So would it be possible to implement \parbox in ConTeXt (or if someone can point me to an already existing command). The LaTeX definition is in tex\latex\base\latex.ltx, line 4692 (at least in my version). It does not have to have the same syntax, but at least the basic functionality. I also often need some stuff to be centered vertically, for example [big image] > some arrows and text > [big image] I use \bTABLE ... \eTABLE or \vcenter for that, but it's not the most perfect way of doing it. 2.) Is there any *neutral* version of a \framed command? To explain what I want to achive, an example is probably most illustrative: \starttext Hasselt $\displaystyle{\rm is: \matrix{\rm nice\cr\rm sunny\cr\rm domestic}}$, but the houses there \framed{$\displaystyle{\rm are: \matrix{\rm too\ high\cr\rm too\ bricky}}$} \stoptext Thank you, Mojca ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context

Now I want to update my version 2005-01-31 to 2005-07-21 texexec --version give this output: texexec --version TeXExec 5.4.2 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2005 texexec : TeXExec 5.4.2 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2005 texutil :tex : pdfeTeX, 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4) context : ver: 2005.07.21 cont-en : ver: 2005.01.31 fmt: 2005.7.26 mes: english total run time : 1 seconds Everything looks fine for me, but, when I want to compile my file, which works before the update to the new version, I get such a mistake: texexec bericht.tex TeXExec 5.4.2 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2005 fixing texformat path : .: {!!/root/.texmf-config,!!/root/.texmf-var,/root/texmf,!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf-config,!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf-var,!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf,!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf-local,!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf-dist}/web2c/ $engine,} fixing engine variable : pdfetex executable : pdfetex format : cont-en inputfile : bericht output : standard interface : en current mode : none TeX run : 1 This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4) \write18 enabled. The cont-sys.tex I've already replaced by the original file which I have in my backup of teTeX3.0 I followed this intructions when I updating the version: http://home.salamander.com/~wmcclain/context-help.html#install I hope somebody can help me. I'll probably have lots of questions as I go along -- this is certainly becoming a tour of the internals of both systems. btw, i renamed the internal \end macro so that you can get away from stoptext refinitions (too messy) Yeah, the \stoptext redefinition was one of the first pieces I wrote, nearly a year ago. The reason I was doing the \stoptext redefinition wasn't the internal \end macro (which didn't exist then, I think) -- it was that the ConTeXt version I used then didn't have an \everystoptext hook. But now that it exists, I can just use it. One other question I have right now: what's a good way to duplicate LaTeX's \vspace macro (which is effectively a \vskip inside), without causing the problems that the ConTeXt manual warns about if we use \vskip? maybe (a patched version of \godown): \def\godown[#1]% {\ifhmode\endgraf\fi \ifvmode\nointerlineskip\vskip#1\relax} test \godown[10cm] test is \vspace accumulating?
