Eeeem, my fault, sorry. I did not update LuaTeX for musl as it comes
from another source (at the moment we can build it on Travis, but I
never did that so far myself).

I wanted to somehow automate this. Norbert has set up an automatic
mirror on GitHub and also set up a Travis job, but we would need a
mechanism to push the resulting binary somewhere. Or at least I need
to find a way to trigger a build manually from time to time. At the
moment one needs to create a tag which is a bit strange, but ...
(I wanted to take time and set up my own account on Travis etc., just
never came around to do so.)

If Henri has some suggestion about the most efficient way to achieve
this ... (for the moment it would be ok if I only get the latest
binary from trunk/master).

Obtaining the latest version is already relatively easy, but I fully
understand your point :)

Maybe
https://github.com/contextgarden/context-mirror
comes closest to what you are looking for, but note that ConTeXt
provides several releases per day (or maybe a release every few days
at most) which is more resembling individual commits in other projects
than one release per every few months as would be common with other
projects.

The only thing that comes somewhat closer to a release is a version
that gets released with TeX Live once per year, but that's not in line
with your desire to easily get the latest version. We had the latest
version of ConTeXt in TLContrib repository for a while which could
probably be reinstated if desired, but that means using MacTeX (even
if from HB).

If you want to provide a package for HB, you either need to use "HEAD"
or create a cron job that will update the package definition several
times per day :) :) :)

But note that installing ConTeXt alone is not sufficient. You also
need LuaTeX, a bunch of fonts and other files (I'm not sure which
ones; with the old ConTeXt MKII it was a lot more dependencies than
with the new ConTeXt MKIV). The easiest way would be to install TeX
Live as a dependency, but from what I saw I suspect that HB only
packages MacTeX as a binary installation. You could install ConTeXt on
top of that in a way that doesn't conflict. Alternatively you need to
spend (quite some) effort figuring out what exactly is needed.

I'll probably create another git repository with a standalone
installation, but it's not yet ready and you should not count on it.

I suspect that you'll find a slightly hard time getting this package
into core HomeBrew and that you'll need to provide your own
repository, but I might be wrong. I decided against providing a
package for MacPorts precisely because it's not really practical to
update a package definition every few days.

I didn't look at the font itself, but if a font requires more than 3
GB of memory to be able to load it, I would suspect something
suspicious (either inefficient storing of data, semi-recursive
behaviour – that did happen with one basically "empty" font in the
past, memory leak, ... or at least some inefficient design at some
point).

But it makes a strong argument for inclusion of 64-bit binaries into TeX Live :)

No, because that's the wrong URL. The correct URL would be
http://minimals.contextgarden.net/setup/osx-64/bin/
if talking about the browser. Apache's and rsync's URLs are not the same.

Can you please check if you can use rsync at all (behind the firewalls
you currently reside)? Do you get any response from, say,
rsync rsync://rsync.macports.org/
?

Exactly. We have that. And most bits and pieces are in place to allow
that, except for the problem with mtxrun not being able to determine
the platform correctly.

Hans, we don't really need this code for the sake of minimals
themselves, it is part of ConTeXt code that needs it and fails.

The problem is that even if I properly detect the platform upfront,
your code (mtx-update) will refuse to respect the setting. When
calling
./bin/mtxrun --script ./bin/mtx-update.lua --force --update --make
--context=beta --platform=linuxmusl-64 --texroot="/some/path"
from musl linux, the mtx-update will insist in always installing and
using linux-64 binaries even if they don't work, no matter what else
we try.

I still believe that a string like "x86_64-linuxmusl" is something
that luatex itself should be able to return when asked about what
platform it is running on (what platform it has been compiled for).
We've discussed this with Taco many years ago, but this has never been
implemented.

You can forget that procedure.
Just copy the fonts, you'll only need a few lines of code for defining
the typescripts (just ask for additional help if you need to get your
fonts working).

TrueType fonts are supported out of the box and should no longer need
that clumsy process.

Nowadays texfont is the wrong tool to use. It doesn't actually install
fonts, it merely converts them from, say, Type 1, to a zillion of
8-bit files (meaning that you won't even be able to use more than a
couple accented characters in that font). This was useful before TeX
supported OpenType fonts, but is a complete waste of time and
resources to go through that painful route nowadays.

You can just copy your own OpenType font files to, say,
texmf-fonts/data (and probably update the font database after that
with mtxrun).

We have a "nearly working" one. At least all the binaries should be
there, see for example:

There are two to three remaining problems:

didn't check) for proper platform recognition. The fact that we are
struggling in shell doesn't really help doing this part either :)

3.) Ideally we need to set up some automated LuaTeX builds to be able
to get the latest LuaTeX binaries in the future.

At the moment it should work if you install TeX Live 2018 pretest with
the ConTeXt scheme or if you fiddle a bit with the installation (you
need to hardcode the platform name in first-setup.sh and then still
some minor things might still go wrong, not sure). But in fact very
little is required to fix the remaining issues.

Can you please remind us to pick this up again in a couple of days?

In the meantime, if you are willing to do some more extensive testing
of patches (see full thread linked above) on both musl & non-musl
linuxes, in various shells etc., as well as perhaps come up with a
patch for mtxrun, that might help.

This means that we have a bug in first-setup.sh and setuptex then. I'm sorry.

Well, we just dropped i386-darwin and powerpc-darwin from the
minimals, we dropped powerpc-linux some time before that which shows
that there's no super strong promise to keep the binaries there
forever (oh, and we also had i386-linuxmusl for a couple of days which
I deleted a few days after adding it because Karl removed it from TeX
Live). Whether that's considered "long term" is left as an exercise to
the reader. If getting the binaries gets difficult and there are no
users requiring support, the binaries will go.

I was aware that until Hans implements support in mtxrun the first
installation on musl would be broken (I never liked this strange
dependency with mtxrun trying to guess the platform). But that should
not happen on a libc system, that's a bug.

From what I understood (maybe I misunderstood) the regular linux
binaries would not even work on machines with musl, but maybe you have
both libc and musl installed?

It was not meant to be a short-term thing (unless/until we figure out
that there are too many problems with it and nobody uses it), but it
was probably never even tested properly and Hans did not yet implement
support in mtxrun, so maybe installing out-of-the-box would not yet
work, I don't have a machine to test it.

All the required binaries should be there though.

You are on macOS, right?

In my experience it was usually Apple's technology to blame. Perfectly
valid PDFs with proper accented characters would always end up with
decomposed characters when copy-pasting. Even pdftotext did a better
job.

I hope that Taco will be able to check this.

The token is correct, but apparently the API changed in the meantime.
Google offers some code to copy-paste that can be used directly, but
our wiki uses some strange combination of php, our own skin (written
by Siep), standalone javascript files, some html pages with results to
avoid ending up on google directly etc.

I'm lost in those files and I'm not too eager to spend too much time
learning all that stuff from scratch.

If there are any web technologies experts willing to take a look, I
can provide some source snippets offline.

I have added the TeX Live binaries. So in principle this could work now:

- We need "the latest" luatex. (It's not yet clear to me what "the
latest" means at this moment as it's still totally confusing to me and
we didn't configure the other builders yet either. Luigi sent me a

That's something which I still believe should be somehow "hardcoded"
into LuaTeX itself, so that LuaTeX itself would be aware of which
platform it was compiled for. At the moment part of detection happens
in mtxrun, but that's somewhat strange.

Can you please raise that question on the TeX Live mailing list?

If TL team is not willing to support it, we can still do it ourselves,
but let's first see if there's an "official" way to support it, also
with respect to naming.
We would need to set up a VM running that version of Linux + some
other stuff (at the moment we are experiencing some technical issues
with network and the build infrastructure and we need to fix the
existing issues first, but then we could look into it).

(Would you expect any other use besides you?)

Can you please retry?

I would say that it's weird that nobody reported it earlier, but it's
probably because if one runs the update on top of existing
distribution, the error skips by.

It looks as if the sysadmin was changing some paths on the system and
accidentally made one search-and-replace replacement too much.

Thanks for the report. I suspect that the maintainer of TikZ might not
be reading this mailing list (and is certainly not a ConTeXt user
himself).

I'm CC-ing him. The issue tracker is here:

In the past Hans and Aditya wrote a number of patches for TikZ
(potentially even fixing this particular issues, I'm not sure), but
not all of them were included.

So ... we need some more persistence in making sure that things get
fixed. This list might be the best place to get the patches, but then
you need to make sure that the patches are actually included upstream.
(This reminds me that I probably need to check if TikZ is still
properly synchronized with upstream in our distribution. As far as I
know SF is dropping support for CVS and I need to check how we sync
the sources now.)

Well, it parses CSV files and typesets them in an arbitrary way.

The old module doesn't support invoking columns by title and doesn't
do any special filters. Another limitation might be that it uses #1,
#2, ... which reaches it limits pretty soon, but I'm sure that could
(should?) be fixed anyway.

And certainly the documentation by Jaroslav is much much better
written than my poor mock-up.

This is an oxymoron. If the functionality is not needed: then why do
we need that new module in the first place? :)

What I want to encourage is one well-written and fully functional
module rather than ending up with ten solution, each one of them with
its own set of bugs. The MKII version of the database module
admittedly has a number of issues, in particular when it comes to
non-ascii. There might be issues with MKIV as well, I haven't used it
for a while because I now usually start with lua tables. But all in
all it would be much better to have some "perfectly working" built-in
functionality to parse CSV files in my opinion.

Now for a bit of off-topic-ness.

Trivia. (Ignoring the attempts to make our own national keyboard) we
are using "Croatian" keyboard (which is probably the same as Serbian
layout) which has all the relevant-for-TeX keys ({}[]\) on the third
plane (alt-gr+), but I learnt computer programming on an US
keyboard and preferred using US layout to those strange keys in the
third plane. In computer programming there's basically never the need
to use non-ascii characters. And in writing texts in native language
there's no need to use those strange backslashes, so life was mostly
good until I started using TeX in UTF-8. Back then I was basically
switching the keyboard a couple of times per sentence (if not per
word) and somewhat hated typing any TeX in native language for that
reason. Then I switched to Dvorak and made myself a special layout.
Now I have all the special keys from US keyboard easily accessible and
all those strange non-ascii character on the third plane (alt-gr-C to
get "Č"). That works much better for me now. So at least I know the
pain of constant need of switching the layouts. Nevertheless I would
still say that it makes more sense to put some effort to get nice
UTF-8 documents. (Except, again, giving Serbian a bit of an exception
due to the fact that the document would still be valid and perfectly
readable in its Latin form.)

One could argue in the other direction as well. It should be pretty
straightforward to "transliterate" all ConTeXt commands into Cyrillic
(ok, I have no clue what people usually do with q, x, y, w, ... but
I'm sure there's a solution for that as well) and simply use English
commands in Cyrillic script to simplify typing :) :) :)

This would be done with font features now. So it would in fact not be
applied at input (which is more dangerous), but rather before the
characters end up in PDF which makes a lot more sense anyway.

One reason why I would not abandon it *immediately* for Serbian is
that Serbian can actually be written in both scripts and there are
straightforward rules for transliteration (it's not exactly one-to-one
character, but those "dj"s should be easy enough to handle, in
particular because there are also all the required digraphs in Unicode
- or maybe more difficult exactly because of that). The fun part is
that they cannot decide which script to use themselves :), so you end
up with schoolmates using different scripts for their lecture notes.

I'm still not arguing that this is the most brilliant idea, but I can
totally imagine a Serbian professor wanting to "auto-generate" a
Cyrillic version of his book on top of the Latin edition with
close-to-zero extra effort.

Greek, in contrast, hardly makes any sense when written in Latin alphabet.

ConTeXt can do that with some additional tricks (font features) in lua
(I don't know the code by heart, but I assume someone else will answer
that).

But you'll have to wrap all the code that you want transliterated in
blocks, so instead of having to switch the keyboard, you'll likely
have to type additional commands.

(Maybe it would work satisfactory without having to change too often,
but I would probably not want to do that and would prefer to go for
Unicode.)

I manually updated linux, but all other platforms are still outdated
from trunk. The tagged version doesn't compile at all (maybe it
requires C++11?).

There were some architectural changes and I'm not able to access some
build machines, including an old Mac VM (I can create a new one
locally, just not today).

If this has something to do with OpenGL, a properly built asymptote
might solve the problem. Which OS and which distribution are you

We didn't yet attempt to set up 64-bit binaries, even though I admit a
crime of having Pine64 [1] in a drawer since the end of the
Kickstarted campaign (which was more than a year ago). I even
considered bringing it to the ConTeXt meeting and setting it up there,
but I only set up the Raspberry (there was enough of other things to
do and an unique opportunity to talk to other developers, so too much
hacking would not be desirable).

I can try to set it up (the only problem is that I will be away for
nearly a month and might not manage to set it up before I leave) in
which case you would get all the binaries working automatically. The
other alternative is that someone else builds both TeX Live binaries
and LuaTeX for now and we add a new machine to our buildfarm later. In
any case we need to manually add that architecture to the list to
start syncing the necessary binaries.

Johannes was thinking of adding binaries to TeX Live.

It's often helpful to have a tex document with the generated pdf, so
that users can also see the effect (picture is worth thousand words)
and have a working tex source they can modify, but a plain text (or
markdown) should be acceptable.

I see various reasons:
- I don't remember anyone explicitly asking for them.
- I suspect that Hans is not allowed to put them into his zip due to
various licencing issues, but it also increases the size.
- It's a bit inconvenient to fetch the files from a random place. The
easiest way to handle that would be by creating a proper ConTeXt
third-party module and then we would only add another module to the
list.

The thing is: I don't need svg at all. All I need is dxf and now I
finally have a reliable way to get it from metapost via pstoedit. SVG
was just a workaround since converting from PDF was slightly more
difficult (latest versions of expensive tools provide that conversion
too, but OpenSource is more limited).

I could check if there's any difference in SVG code as generated by
metapost vs. the one generated by mudraw. But SVG images made by
CorelDraw were misconverted by Inkscape as well.

metapost to dxf.

First run "context something.mp" and then

pstoedit -dt -f dxf:-polyaslines\ -mm something.1 something.dxf

For some reason the SVG files from metapost get wrong dimensions when
converted via inkscape, but pstoedit works super reliably.

(those binaries should end up in minimals very soon).

But on Mac we are currently experiencing some build problems on
existing machines, most likely due to some problems with outdated
timestamps of generated files. I'm waiting for Luigi to fix the
problem.

But aside from that. If you (developers, not users) want to call one
version of LuaTeX 1.05, you should tag a version 1.05.

Increasing the version numbers in trunk and skipping any official
releases is a pretty bad development practice.

Usually you would put experimental features to trunk and whatever you
want to end up at users to tags or potentially stable maintained
branches that get bugfixes.

[NTG-context] Module for Markdown: any volunteer to make a ConTeXt interface?

Hi,

There's a really nice module for processing markdown:
 https://github.com/Witiko/markdown
that has been presented during the TUG meeting and is included in TeX Live.

It theoretically works for ConTeXt (the output is perfectly usable),
but it needs a cleanup of the user interface to turn the options on
and off.

For example, it would be nice to use something like

\setupmarkdown
[fencedCode=true]

rather than

\def\markdownOptionFencedCode{true}

Is anyone willing to look into the code and help the author fix the interface?

(I can add it to our distribution if needed.)

This looks like something worth porting to ConTeXt :)
Even if implemented from scratch, the package could be used to borrow
the hacks. The syntax is pretty clean (and already relatively
"ConTeXt"-ish):

\getmap[file=berlin, mode=gm, language=de, scale=2, 8 xsize=400, ysize=600,...]

To Jorge: I would probably use LaTeX to fetch the maps and then
include the images into ConTeXt as the first workaround if you need
the maps in a ConTeXt document and need a fast solution.

This is not really a ConTeXt-related question, but ConTeXt can include
any image you can feed to it, and potentially fetch images from URL on
the fly. So you first need to figure out how to get the image you
want.

You first need your own API_KEY.

If you have problems with the interface, ask on stackexchange or
elsewhere. If you have problems with making as automatic workflow as
possible (once you know how to get your PNGs exactly), you may ask
here. But have the rest of the details ready.

ConTeXt supports "natively" drawing OpenStreet Maps, but I doubt it
would work in your case.

Thank you for suggestions, I'll do some testing.

In case I forget, please remind me about this after the 4th May. We
currently have as good as no internet connectivity and I would hate to
break the server while experimenting and then being unable to do
anything afterwards.

It should work in principle. Just set "platform=linux" before calling
mtx-update.lua and disable '--make'. (You could in principle also call
rsync manually.) And then all you need to do is set the PATH to
binaries.

The problem is that unless something changed, mtxrun will most likely
be causing you some troubles and will insist in fetching x86_64 (I'm
not sure how to completely avoid that).

Now that you brought this topic out of the dead ...

I managed to convert the SVG to DXF somehow back then (I'm not 100%
sure how exactly, perhaps I was using Inkscape), but it turned out
that the conversion was faulty and useless (it converted circles into
octagons, proper scaling was lost, etc.), but I only realized that
once I got to the machine with a limited time slot.

The software that was installed next to the CNC did not accept PDFs,
but eventually the "operator" pulled out his laptop with a newer
version of (commercial) software and eventually imported my PDFs to
get the models for the CNC (annoyed for the fact that I didn't bring
"ready-to-use" files). He earlier explained that we should avoid PDFs
(as they could be bitmap etc.), but of course the vector PDFs
generated by ConTeXt were fine.

(It will probably be a while until I will go there next.)

I added it back. It's one of the best editors around, even if not a
TeX-centric one.

A better link to the bundle might be

It's old, but it still works. At some point it might make sense to
update it with the latest list of commands that Wolfgang assembled.

I would suspect that changing the version number triggers regenerating
the formats. Most likely one of the other files fixed the problem, but
the problem only disappeared once you regenerated the format. That's
pure guesswork though.

I would suspect that OSFONTDIR or something else in the process
doesn't work correctly.

ConTeXt will only be able to typeset the document if it can find the font.

All the Debian developer can do is add the font to the equivalent of

/usr/local/texlive/2016/texmf-dist/fonts/truetype/public/marvosym/marvosym.ttf
(not sure where exactly that is), but it might be that their policy is
not to duplicate fonts, who knows.

So independent of whether or not this gets resolved in Debian, you
should figure out why the font isn't found by ConTeXt. It might also
be that ConTeXt only finds the Type1 fonts and then stops searching
any further.

I don't have the file tikzlibrarycommute.code.tex on my machine
either. Anywhere. Not in the ConTeXt distribution nor in TeX Live.
That file was only posted to the mailing list by Idris and apparently
nobody ever looked at it or added it anywhere.

(It usually helps to provide a minimal example or a bit more context.
Just saying that something doesn't work is a bit more difficult to
debug.)

If you want to get this work out of the box, it would be super useful
to coordinate with the original author of tikz-cd to add support for
ConTeXt. And if any other patches are needed, we should try to
coordinate with upstream TikZ authors as well. I'm not sure what to do
with "&" though. We could theoretically add that file to the ConTeXt
distribution, but we'll then end up with other people asking why it
doesn't work in TeX Live and I certainly cannot afford to do
unauthorized changes to other TikZ files without getting a formal
approval that something is broken and without at least getting some
patch scheduled for approval by TikZ developers.

So if you want to get that working temporarily, it's probably best to
follow instructions in that email. If you want to get it fixed
properly, we should convince the authors to add support upstream. I
didn't look at the file(s) yet.

upstream TikZ sources - CVS (this has been a problem for perhaps two
months or so).

[NTG-context] Looking for wiki master(s)

Hi,

While discussing the state of the wiki during the ConTeXt conference,
we came up with proposal to find a person (or a small group of people)
whose task would be to:

- extract the list of all existing wiki pages (you can get help with that)
- group them in reasonable blocks (fonts, graphics, installation, ...)
- push/remind the community to look into individual blocks at scheduled times

We could for example have special "focus weeks" such as "installation
week" where a list of all pages related to installation would be
posted on the mailing list with the goal to clean those chapters up or
to write the missing content. We need someone who will post reminders
and push people.

It would also be very helpful to have someone who would come up with a
list of missing topics and some proposals to restructure and better
organize the pages.

(We realized that it might be easy to find people to go over one
single page at a time, but no one has stepped forward to actively
organize this work.)

I used vim and TextMate (text editors) in the past to achieve that.

In theory ConTeXt has XML/HTML output and can parse text either using
the vim module or the built-in lua-based lexers, so it's probably
doable, but it might be far easier to go through some text editor. I'm
sure Scite (with syntax highlighting definitions written by Hans) can
do that as well.

OK, so Hans' RPi returns (among others):

$ readelf -A /proc/self/exe

  Tag_ABI_HardFP_use: SP and DP

and the Android by Lutz returns:

So his platform gets recognised as armhf and uses the binaries
compiled on RPi, but it gives strange results.

Lutz, I suggest you come to the ConTeXt Meeting (train ticket to
Zwolle costs just 29-39 EUR) and don't let Luigi & Philipp away from
their keybords until your problem gets fixed :) :) :)

Can you please try to fetch first-setup.sh again and try to reinstall
ConTeXt? You should get LuaTeX beta-0.90.0 r5889 which is a bit old,
but just to check whether things work at all. If Luigi plans to make a
new release today, it makes no sense to rebuild the binary now
(building might take longer than waiting for a new release :)

I don't want to use significantly different names from what TeX Live
uses, so I would prefer to stick with "armel" and "armhf", but the
main point is to be able to differentiate between the two platforms
and so far I wasn't able to without the use of config.guess (which
triggers the compiler etc) or without users manually setting their
platform.

and both tests fail (like they are supposed to). That's great, I'll
patch the scripts, thank you very much. I was a bit frustrated by the
inability to support both platforms properly.

I'm now waiting for the code for the 64-bit arm binaries :)

And then there's the next question: what hardware/software do we need
if we want to add an additional unit to our (new) build farm? At the

We only ship 0.98.1 r6083.

In order to build 0.98.3 Luigi should apply the necessary changes to
the repository.

But it's quite likely that the binaries are indeed incompatible, I
have no clue. See also the other post about arm from today.

It could be a problem with the shell you are using (or maybe there are
some bashisms used).

What exactly is "sh" on your machine? Can you try to run this with bash?

This is more or less expected.

In that case we should be able to find a solution. According to
https://www.tug.org/texlive/build.html
that binary was built on RPi as well, so there's no reason why we
couldn't reproduce a working binary. There are two possible
explanations:
- different hardware and/or software ("fixable")
- some bug in a recent version of LuaTeX

armv7h looks like "armhf".

But I checked the logs and you are most likely using the binaries that
were compiled for Arch Linux and your machine (CPU) specifically
rather than the ones that are compiled by the TeX Live team.

Can you try replacing the luatex binary in ConTeXt distribution with
the binaries from
http://tug.org/svn/texlive/trunk/Master/bin/
please try once with armel-linux/luatex and once with
armhf-linux/luatex. (You can fetch the binary via SVN or via viewvc,
but make sure that the downloaded file will be executable.)

I'm curious whether that binary works for you (try with armhf-linux first).

The exact architecture depends on hardware rather than software. I
guess we have RPi2 B (Hans must know). For some reason I cannot access
the machine at the moment, but I guess that RPi2+ is also armv7 (ARM
Cortex-A7). I'm not 100% sure though.

The question is whether an older version of OS would help in any way.

In any case you should be able to just copy the luatex from your
distro to the minimals and get a working PDF.

I can probably come up with link to an up-to-date binary (I'm in the
process of setting up automatic builds on regular basis; just
side-tracked by my job and a few other hobbies).

But it would be wise to push Luigi to make an official release or at
least to backport the fix.

The binaries should have been updated some time yesterday.

There are only two things that come to my mind.

- either you fetched the binaries for armhf and your computer requeres armel
- or there are some subtle differences between the two armhf platforms
(I compile the binaries on the latest raspbian)

What is the PATH of TeX Live, do the binaries come from armel or armhf?

This might be a bit tricky to debug.

I can try to update the binaries to the very latest version (you
should be able to get them in a few hours), but the binaries are
currently compiled on Raspberry PI and if Android happens to be
incompatible to some extent, then I have no clue where to start
looking.

MkII (read: ConTeXt with pdfTeX) doesn't support typesetting in Arabic
script at all.

And support for XeTeX has always been limited in ConTeXt. So it's not
really strange if the language support is still missing. It can only
work in MkIV (and potentially in XeTeX, but I'm not sure how much
effort would be needed to make it work properly in XeTeX).

So feel free to contribute the translations as Wolfgang suggested.

As already explained in another email, the admin did an OS upgrade on
Monday on a short notice and I wasn't online to send a notice to
others. But I believe the outage was short enough and hopefully all
should be back to normal.

I was on holidays until today.

The admin sent me a notice about a shorter (planned) downtime of
contextgarden.net some time yesterday. After you sent me the email I
checked and it seems as if Apache wasn't running, so I restarted it
and also replaced the Pragma's .com domain names with .nl (I might
have missed some).

If you spot any other problems, please let me know.

How should one properly compile that file then to get the SVG?

Using just "mpost something.mp" doesn't work that way.

Given that metapost supports SVG natively I imagined that it would
produce a simpler/cleaner output. Thanks a lot for the suggestion,
I'll test it.

It turned out that the (opensource) tools I used for converting SVG
into DXF gives very weird result, so I have to change the other parts
of the "toolchain" as well.

Nevertheless, the question about whether one could convince MP to
output true units in cm/mm/in.

[NTG-context] Creating SVG: using MetaFun, exporting proper units, conversion to DXF

Hi,

I want to play with CNC and don't yet have any experience with CAD
software (nor the licence for the expensive ones) other than perhaps
some Blender, so I decided to try to use the super ugly route with
metapost -> svg -> dxf -> g-code
for the first time.

I have a few questions.

(1) I love Hans' shortcuts in metafun, but I seem to remember that things like
input metafun;
or perhaps
input mp-tool;
used to work, so that I don't have to remember to use
mpost -mem=metafun my-drawings.mp
when compiling the graphics.

Did the method with "input" ever work (or is it supposed to work)? Now
I'm getting a bunch of weird errors.
I would love to specify everything in the source file and then just
call mpost. If that doesn't work, that's fine, I can still add
"-mem=metafun", but ...

(2) I guess that using "raw metapost" is the only sane way to generate
SVG. If I use metapost inside ConTeXt that's probably not going to
work, right?

(3) Is there any way to convince the SVG output mode to generate something like

to buy AudoCAD just for the sake of converting files.

(Not to mention that FreeCAD's SVG importer crashes when reading
output from MetaPost unless I manually remove parts of the SVG, but
that's an unrelated problem that I'm somehow able to overcome.)

You first need to get lilypond working from Terminal, otherwise asking
any other question on the ConTeXt mailing list won't really help much.

I created a shell script "lilypond" somewhere in PATH, containing

#!/bin/bash
exec /Applications/LilyPond.app/Contents/Resources/bin/lilypond "$@"

but I don't remember if that ever worked properly.

At the moment I get

GNU LilyPond 2.18.2

and then it just consumes processor forever without producing any
result. I'm not eager to start debugging right now, but just to let
you know that getting lilypond to work from terminal is a prerequisite
for getting the module to work.

I'm trying to generate daily reports and wanted to include the date in
bookmarks, but there is some weird (non)expansion going on.

I might just as well switch to lua for certain parts of the document
(like cycling through dates), but I suspect that there must be some
trivial hack to prevent me from getting my sections labeled

Running "ulimit -S -n 2048" in fact solved the problem for me, but I
wonder if there is any better solution. (I might even have more than
256 files open in my text editor and that one doesn't complain.)

Is it possible to politely ask LuaTeX to close the files after reading them?

(It's fine if that's impossible, I can still use Hraban's workaround.)

Unrelated to the problem, but ...

Instead of sourcing setuptex you should just add
/opt/context/tex/texm-linux64 (or whawever folder that is) to the
environmental variable PATH.

The setuptex script doesn't do anything else and is just a convenience
script for users. In scripting you should better set PATH. You can
also manually set TEXMFCACHE if you want. Not that it matters much,
but I don't know why one would want the overhead of running an
additional script each time.

[NTG-context] How to start the demo in modules

Hi,

MKII uses
\doifnotmode{demo}{\endinput}
to enter the demo mode in modules.

I see that MKIV now switched to
\continueifinputfile{s-something.mkiv}


The question arises: What should I suggest to a module writer for a
relatively simple file that doesn't use any MKIV features and provides
just the module file t-something.tex?

Is it OK to keep using "\doifnotmode{demo}{\endinput}" also in MKIV?

But the code above doesn't seem to work (I don't get the letter "č"
printed out at all). I would prefer the approach with more fine-tuning
though because "č" is always misaligned. And I seem to remember that
this functionality has been in the core for a long time already, I
just again forgot about it because most fonts include the full charset
nowadays.

When has \shiftup been implemented?

It doesn't work in TeX Live (or maybe I forgot to update TL to the
latest version), but works with the latest version of ConTeXt.

Nevertheless this doesn't entirely solve the problem. I now have a
problem with the following:

\catcode`č=\active
\defč{\buildtextaccent\textcaron c}

\underbar{Test this č}

I will try to remember how to fix the font on the fly with lua (or
perhaps figure out how to edit the font; it's a commercial font
though, so fixing it "on the fly" would probably be better).

I will also test some other piece of code that Hans sent me off-list.
(I seem to remember that there must be some tens of ways to underline
text. Every now and then Hans sends a new demo.)

No.

Long time ago Hans asked me if we could switch to rsync from the MinGW
project rather than the one based on cygwin's dll. (Then we probably
both forgot about this.)

The "setup2" is experimental setup bundling rsync from MinGW, the idea
was to provide testing setup that would replace the old one.

As soon as I get a green light, I could remove "setup", rename
"setup2" to "setup" and only leave the new binaries there. (I can also
remove "setup2" in principle.)
