Hi all, 

I noticed that \doifinstring produces quite strange output if a command
follows immediately (or with any amount of spaces) after the substring 
I am searching for:

If I insert another character, text or {} between them
(with or without spaces), all is ok.

I would like to ask what is the cause of this behavior and how to 
use the \doifinstring to prevent the "fbf@" on the output.

in my email, I used official language codes: be=Belarussian, bg=Bulgarian, 
sr=Serbian.

The \installlanguage command is very important because it contains
definitions of the most frequently used typographic elements of the 
given language, for details see below.

Looking forward for both lang-txt files. The sooner you will send it, the

[NTG-context] MacOS+TeXlive: installation problems

Hi all,

one student of mine asked me for a help with installation TeXlive 
(from http://www.tug.org/mactex/mactex-download.html) 
on her MacBook Air 16 with macOS Catalina.

Despite the fact that the site states 
"All install packages are developer-signed and notarized by Apple.",
she got:
"Cannot be opened because its from unidentified developer, MacOS cannot verify 
that this app is free from malware."

What could it be? 
I have got no experience with MacOS, so I would like to ask for some hints how 
we can fix it.

Hi Sylvain,

on my computer (TL2020) I am not able to compile \blank with any command
defining the dimension (2\paperheight, 0.25\paperheight, .25\paperheight).
I do not know why...

But if I use another dimension, eg. 5*big or 20cc, it works with 
\dontleavehmode:

[NTG-context] French spacing in ConTeXt

the following code works for the default roman family but not for tt-family.

As far as I know, the broad spacing (=non-frenchspacing) should work

Hi,

I tried 
\setuphead[section][expansion=yes]
with no effect before I wrote my question to the list here.

With the \setuphead, the .tuc file still contains macro names instead of the 
text:
 ["title"]="\\expanded \\name ",
whereas without it only:
 ["title"]=" \\name ",

So is there any way how to solve it?

[NTG-context] Sections in content: macros v text

Hi all,

the content generated by the MWE below contains 
1 bb ... 1
2 bb ... 1
instead of
1 aa ... 1
2 bb ... 1
because the content structure refers to the macro name \name in both sections 
instead of to work with the text.

Maybe it was already discussed by I am not able to find any solution how to 
send the text "aa" to the content in this case.

[NTG-context] \type -- extra space in TABLE

Hi all,

in the following code

there is a different behaviour of \type: while its parametr 
in normal text is printed out as is (expected), in the TABLE
the extra space is displayed after the command.

Is it ok? 
How could I suppress the extra space?

But -- I do not know why -- your code you attached gives on my computer (TL2019)

I do not how free are you in decision where figures should be located
but I tried with "leftpage" and "rightpage" instead of "page" and
it seems to be ok.

I noticed the difference in behaviour of textcommand which depends
on the location: for top, bottom and page the \crlf (see MWE) is applied
while for the left and right not even if other values (\red, any-text)
are used as expecterd.

How could I activate the textcommand=\crlf for location=right?
(The line break appears only the width of the figure becomes too small.)

Tested with TL2019 and with version from Mar 6, 2020.

I am afraid that there is nothing to be wikified... I opened it 
(Mint 19.3/64b) in qpdfview and evince, print out by pdfinfo and mutool 
and in all cases there is "a b c" or "a, b, c" (, = single left quote) 
as was written. (My acroread is just broken and in xpdf and mupdf 
I guess there is no service to display it.)

What is the reason that keyword attribute does not accept commas whereas
others (title, author...) do?

As far as I know, key words (in papers, books etc.) are used only as a comma
separated list of terms without further structuring so I cannot imagine 
who and why would need braces in normal cases.

I used these definitions and it works really better, the hyphen is not
repeated in other languages anymore, thanks for this setting.
Unfortunately, two side-effects appeared after switching language back to uk:

* after the hyphen, no linebreak seems to be allowed,
* hyphenation patterns have been applied on the composed word, while before 
switching (default) not.

Tested with TL2019 as well as with the newest.

How can these side-effects be suppressed?

repeated hyphen appears also with languages which do not use it (or for
which it has not been set).

How can I assign the definition only to the selected language?

[NTG-context] Question to installation ConTeXt from TeXlive

when one (eg. student) decides for customizing the Windows installation from 
TeXlive, 
24 items will appear in the group of packages list. 

Because I have no experience with W. installations, I would like to ask
which of them are relevant or possible to use with ConTeXt MkIV (on W.).
(The aim is not to install unusable stuff.)

[NTG-context] multipage typing

content of typing environment is automatically broken at the end of a page,
so is it no problem to typeset multipage code.

But when I used startframedtext inside (see below), the multipage code 
was suppressed. Is there any way how to get over it?

Your code works, thank you for the help.

The no-effect-problem was caused by some invisible characters (0xc2a0)
inside, they disrupted the token processing.

if I compile the following (minimised) code with ConTeXt from TL2017,
I receive expected result -- one framed gray box with correct width.

Now I tried it with ConTeXt from TL2019 (TL2018 produces the same result as 
TL2019)
and I have got _two_ boxes -- the outer one is correct and frames the typing 
environment
as in the past whereas the new box frames the text inside the typing.

Unfortunately, both boxes seems to be controlled by the \defineframedtext[MPT]
which caused that the inner box runs outside the typesetting area, i.e. the
left offset value is applied twice.

I found out that it is related with the given name MP.
Therefore, I renamed it to another name (it was ok) but after adding
"option=mp" I came across the same problem.

Is there any way how to define behaviour of both boxes in the existing \startMP
environment apart? Or is it not possible?

punctuation has been enabled. 
The difference is in use of quotation marks. (It seems as a language and font 
independent problem.)

How can I persuade macro \quotation to move the punctuation outside the frame?

[NTG-context] Bad cooperation between \unit and TABLE

Hi all,

I came across the problem with bad aligment of cells in natural tables
(longer MWE below):

When I use \unit for better typesetting of units, lines 6, 6a, 8 and 9
are sloppy-aligned -- first, the alignmentcharacter is ignored,
secondly the very huge space appears between e.g. m and 2. It seems 
that it happens at any time when the exponent in any form is required.

Moreover, the line 11 is also sloppy-aligned as a consequence of the
use of \unit|\high commands because if the line 2a is active, the 
alignment position is computed properly and the line 11 is ok.

Is it a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the explanation. But there is the difference -- serialize says
only the memory address and not the stuff there. Have we got any other tool?
The reason why I am looking for any replacement is the intention 
to show students how it looks inside.

[NTG-context] Which math font for LinLibertine family?

Hi all,

the font family LinLibertine (ConTeXt from TL2018 and older) does not
contain any math font. 

On the file type-imp-libertine.mkiv there is a (disabled) line joining math
from times family. Is the times math the best for LinLibertine or
would you recommend me something else (from the design point of view)?

What is the best way how to add math to the existing typescript?
(I would like to avoid changing the file from the installation.)

Maybe it is a misunderstanding but how can use these modules
in ConTeXt? I had in mind typesetting the code in ConTeXt
like \startTEX etc.

according to our wiki, there are pretty printers in ConTeXt 
implemented only for TEX, LUA, XML and MP.

I am searching now for PHP pretty printer but I did not find 
anything on the net (only C and Java). I would like to ask 
whether is something for PHP (or for other programming languages)
available.

[NTG-context] Question to floating figure and grid

Hi all,

the following code worked in TL2017 but in TL2018 the unwanted vertical
space appears before the 2nd knuth.tex. I do not know how to supress it.

I also do not know how to deal with the distance between the text and the
figure, I guessed that is controled by leftmargindistance but it makes
nothing. What am I doing wrong?

good idea, I tried it but the problem is that it does not switch itself off
automatically when the language is changed again. 

The following code works but I guess that must be some more sophisticated
ConTeXt way.

Moreover, it seems that it has no influence on \hyphentatedurl which is also ok.

But only one point I do not understand -- when I used the key 
language=cz, repeated hyphens disappeared. It would by fine if one
can set it only for the given language(s), eg. for cz+sk yes and for en no.
Is there any way for this?

in composed words with hyphen inside (e.g. modro-zelený = blue-green), the
hyphen character must be repeated at the beginning of the new line
(modro-/-zelený). This rule is obligatory for Czech and Slovak typesetting.

I am able to implement this feature by defining a new command (see \def\= below)
but it means that all appearances of "-" must be replaced (manually) in the 
source
text. I tried all options of \setuphyphenation but no one gives the correct
result. 

Is there any way in ConTeXt how to set it by default?

Yesterday I tried also numbercommand, textcommand, etc. and the described
problem did not appear. Why the key "command" needs \unexpanded and
other keys (*command) not?

and I am not able to understand the logic of the table generated

What is the meaning of lines in the table? Or is this published somewhere?

thank you for your reply. 

The split=repeat -- my fault, sorry. But -- surprisingly -- this mistake
helped me along understanding the problem. I discovered -- if head
and next head are defined -- that the "line number 1" servers for the
opening head at the beginning of a table whereas "line number 2" 
is used for all "next heads" at all pages of the table. 

So the problem is reduced to substracting one or two for only heads
and head+next heads, respectively.

about \currentTABLErow etc. for counting lines in natural tables.

I have got the following two minimal non-working examples (on TeXlive 2018):

\dorecurse{100}{\bTR\bTD \currentTABLErow xxx \eTD\eTR}

In this case, the head-line is alse counted which makes no sense
and I do not know how to supress it.

or how to install some extension, respectively.
But I have not test these ways yet.

Hi,

I solve the same problem for ages... I decided for fixed time points related
with new edition of TeXlive. 

Advantages:

TeXlive versions (from my point of view) are most stable.
You really can compile your files repeatedly getting the same result.

Disadvantages:

You have to store all TeXlive editions.
All TeXlive editions are space demanding.
You have make notes on your files/projects which version was used.
You cannot use new features if you are going to refresh the project.

This is my way but maybe there is something better.
[I work ConTeXt since 2010 and only with MkIV.]

you are right, tlig is the missing one. Thank you for directing me.

Does it mean that all features are disabled when the new "non-TeX" font is 
joined? 
(I used \starttypescript with \definefontsynonym; then \definetypeface and 
\setupbodyfont.)

Later I discovered [features=default] (at \definefontsynonym) which enables it, 
too.
Which features are enabled by this word default?

Side effect of my experimets was the syntantic error  "! Missing \endcsname 
inserted"
at \definefontsynonym [Serif][name:JohnBaskerville][] with empty last brackets.
Is it ok, or not?

usually, if one writes -- or ---, will receive real en-dash or em-dash,
respectively. I just tried font called JohnBaskerville 
(commercial; from Štorm type foundry, CZ) but I got only '--' and '---',
ie. sequences were not transformed to the proper characters.

Dashes are present in then font, commands \endash and \emdash produce them 
correctly.

What could be wrong?

mtxrun--script fonts --reload

crashed (line 479, TL 2018) on existing directory if this directory has
incorrect permissions (in tested case I set 000 for making the directory
and its subtree completely invisible).

Is this the expected behaviour?

[NTG-context] Questions to font family Pagella

Hi all,

I am doing some first tests with fonts (related with our font testing 
intentions)
and I found out that since 2015 there are two sets of files for pagella with 
the same metadata by otfinfo -i.

Eg.:

152192 
/usr/local/texlive/2018/texmf-dist/fonts/opentype/public/newpx/TeXGyrePagellaX-Regular.otf
144472 
/usr/local/texlive/2018/texmf-dist/fonts/opentype/public/tex-gyre/texgyrepagella-regular.otf

The only one difference is in the license note:
"Copyright 2013--2015 Michael Sharpe for added superior figures, letters and 
symbols." 
at files from newx directory.

1. 
Why the distribution (TL 2018) contains two versions of the same font family? 

2. 
How can I recognise which one was used for the document after 
\setupbodyfont[pagella]?

3.
On my disk I have got also one older version (1.011) of pagella (I do not where 
I took it from)
which contains more(!) characters than the current one (2.004) where eg. the 
subset of cyrillic characters is missing... 
Why the newer version contains less?

I am not sure but I guess that the problem is related with the behaviour of
the input processor which erases characters at the end of line (CR, LF) and
replace them by a space. Then, the whole content between \start/stopluacode
is at only one line. If you the second way of comment marks, the letter "u" 
will be shown at the output.

I tried it and the syntactic error disappeared, thanks.
But the left quotation character is still not hanging.
I tried also different positions of this fixing code, 
but with no success. 

Is there any other way how to fix it?

Hi Wolfgang,

some deep error appeared, unfortunately. I tested it on TL2014--17. Did you
use TL2018? It seems similarly as any other error related with the change of
dimensions maintanance betweeen TL2017 and 2018.

after run till the end, the opening character is hanging but closing

Proper Czech quotation marks are available via \quotation command:
\mainlanguage[cz] 
\quotation{text}

But it is language independent problem, I did more tests:
neither Czech, nor US, nor Dutch, nor German quotation marks are hanging. 
Without influence is also font (font family), tested on modern, libertine, 
EB Garamond 12 from your example, times...

after some hard work I hoodwinked it changing the basic definition:

\definehead[specialpage][chapter] --> \definehead[specialpage][subsubsection]
joined with redefinition of the design of this special subsubsection
but I cannot believe that this is the proper solution. 
Have anybody idea how to do it better?
