[NTG-context] Miktex breaks install

2011-09-15 Thread Felix Ingram
In a fit of madness I installed Miktex and now my minimals install is
borked (unknown script 'context.lua'...). Looking at the output it
seems that Miktex has set a load of variables that Context is now
using for itself.

I suppose it would be nice to run side by side, but I guess I need to
reset these variables when using Context. Is the texmfcnf.lua file the
best place to put these? If so, then does anyone know what I should
set the following to?

SELFAUTOLOC
SELFAUTODIR
SELFAUTOPARENT
TEXMFCNF
TEXMF
TEXOS

Thanks in advance,

Felix

Did you install minimals with windows installer or with bat file?

From what I understand, MikTeX currently doesn't have any ConTeXt
installed. So the whole difference that MikTeX makes is that it
changes PATH to executables. If you want to use minimals, all you need
to do is to put path to minimals/tex/texmf-mswin/bin in front of
path to MikTeX binaries.

If you don't know how to change PATH (you can either do it with set
PATH=... or with GUI somewhere is system settings), please ask again.
(We need a clear entry in ConTeXt wiki about that.)

afaik there is no dependency on 0.70 other than 0.66/0.67 (that will start

I believe Mojca was referring to releasing new stable.

it just adds the math tfms which are missing from TUG.

Eventually ... yes, but it depends a bit on what timeframe you have in
mind when you say eventually. First of all, no newer current
version of ConTeXt has been released since this one. But most
important: ConTeXt highly depends on the version of LuaTeX being used
and that is out of our control. When the author of MikTeX will decide
to upgrade LuaTeX version, ConTeXt will probably (have to) be updated
at the same time.

miktex use in most cases a .ini-file. But this files don't contain much
more than \input cont-en \dump.

Check if cont-en.tex has a \dump command at the end. If yes you can use
cont.en.tex, if not create such an ini-file.

Btw: there should be a formats-context.ini in your main root which
contains all the entries for the context formats currently disabled in
miktex. You can copy this entries to the formats.ini in your
UserConfig-root. That's a bit faster than using the GUI. (change if
necessary .ini to .tex)

Can you please try what happens if you install MikTeX in some folder

I'll give your idea of no spaces a try tomorrow. Meanwhile if you can

You could try to unzip cont-tmf.zip in a separate root without spaces.
E.g.

Then add C:\contextfiles as a new root.

[NTG-context] Miktex 2.7 --- Remove quotes from %*

2008-10-01 Thread dwarnold45
Mojca,

OK. Removed quotes, so texmfstart.bat now reads:

@echo off

This now works:

However, I cannot make the formats. Going to Miktex 2.7-Settings-Formats,

[NTG-context] Miktex

2008-09-30 Thread David Arnold

Mojca,

I saw your note on blog.miktex.org:

If you still want to run ConTeXt on MikTeX while it has been removed,
you may create a file texmfstart.bat in C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7
\miktex\bin with the content:

@echo off
ruby C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\scripts\context\ruby\texmfstart.rb
%*

and extract www.pragma-ade.com/context/current/cont-tmf.zip into C:
\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7. Then, update filename database and
generate formats, and everything should work again.

Mojca

I followed this advice, installed texmfstart.bat, unzipped cont-
tmf.zip properly, updated the filename database, then got stuck.

At the dos prompt:

$ texmfstart --help

Worked just fine. However,

$ texmfstart texexec --help

Did not work. What am I missing? If I recall I'll need to do:

$ texmfstart texexec --make --all

Or some such thing.

Mojca,

I a hopeless mac user at home now. I used to be pretty good with
miktex, even working with hans to test the settings that now exist in

in Miktex. But no longer.

It's our school machines I am trying to configure, PC's with Windows
XP. I got to a point today where I selected the formats tab in the
Miktex Settings gui, and tried to build cont-en there. It objected
that it could not find cont-en.ini in tex/something or other so I
tried moving cont-en.ini from the context distribution to tex/
something or other and updating the filename database to no avail.

I'll give your idea of no spaces a try tomorrow. Meanwhile if you can
think of anything less drastic, as I have to do this on 20 different
machines,

Thanks so much.

I followed this advice, installed texmfstart.bat, unzipped cont-

properly, updated the filename database, then got stuck.
 At the dos prompt:

 Worked just fine. However,

Did not work. What am I missing? If I recall I'll need to do:
 $ texmfstart texexec --make --all

Can you please try what happens if you install MikTeX in some folder

Re: [NTG-context] Miktex still broken

2008-08-22 Thread Peter Wüsten
The context in Miktex is still broken. Has anyone got experience
installing the standalone version of context on windows alongside
 Miktex?

As I have quite some legacy LaTeX-files I have Miktex 2.7, standalone
Context, and a Context minimals installation on my system. They co-exist
nicely on my system: Rather than pointing my path environment variable
to any of those installations permanently I use batch-files to
initialize whatever system I'd like to work with.

These are the batch files I use; your paths will vary:
- for running Miktex:

REM setupmiktex.bat
@echo off
set PATH=C:\Programme\MiKTeX\2.7\miktex\bin;%PATH%
C:\Programme\PSPad editor\PSPad.exe

- for running the ConTeXt maximals (aka ConTeXt standalone):

REM cstart.bat
@echo off
usr\local\context\cscite.bat usr\local\context

- for running the minimals:

REM setupminimals.bat
@ECHO OFF
E:\programme\contextminimal\context\tex\setuptex.bat
E:\programme\contextminimal\context\tex

you'll also have to add a line at the bottom of setuptex.bat, under :done
call c:\ruby\scite\scite.exe
or whatever editor you use.

And one specific question, will the mptopdf command work in this dual
 installation?

I think so; at least running mptopdf -v from a console window invoked
from the editor made mptopdf tell me there was no file called '-v' to
process ;-)

Cheers, Peter

[NTG-context] MikTeX and XeTeX now available

2007-10-03 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Dear all MikTeX fans,

Just to let you know: MikTeX 2.7 beta 3 should work OK with ConTeXt
XeTeX (with yesterday's ConTeXt update).

I have experienced some problems with fontconfig admin rights, but
in general it could or should be OK (I didn't try the very latest
version). If you experience any problems, they should be reported.

Mojca

PS for Hans: the -tcx flag removal has been implemented at exactly the
right moment, since it doesn't work on MikTeX under windows.

[NTG-context] Miktex woes

2006-04-18 Thread David Arnold
All,

A colleague of mine did an update of his miktex. Now his context
won't work with this error:

  TeXExec 5.4.3 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2005

warning : texexec.ini not found, try 'texexec --verbose'

locating ini file : not found by searching
locating ini file : no environment variable set
locating ini file : not found in own path

This was working before the Miktex update. Miktex has a texexec.exe
in a bin/ file. That's the one being used, but we cannot find any
instance of texexec.ini in the miktex tree. I don't think Miktex uses
the ini file.

Anyone know what's going on here?

Alternatively, could I get a suggestion for a good miktex
installation of context using the zip file from Pragma?

No idea. I was using Miktex context for some time, but found it too
cumbersome to work with. For context, miktex update is too slow. There
is no particular advantage of using miktex for context. I have two
parallel trees here, one for miktex and one for context and everything
works fine.

If hard disk space is not an issue and you do not mind installing
ruby, you can instal the windows installation from pragma in a
different (from Miktex texmf and localtexmf trees) directory. Use
setuptex.bat to add the pragma binaries to the path only when you need
them. This way, you can keep on using latex from miktex and can
context from pragma.

Apologies for not replying to earlier emails. To be honest
it is sometimes difficult to keep track of the threads
and especially to whom the emails are directed.

I was/am busy in doing a lot of the Latex - Context conversions
with a small perl script and this consumes a lot of my time.
Perhaps I should make this perl script public, as more people are making
the switch to Context, however my perl programming skills
are not that good, just a beginner. If someone is interested,
just write an email and I will send you a copy.

I will certainly try to follow and implement your suggetions

Thanks for your time/help

The perl script (texexec.pl) has some difficulties (sometimes the

the ruby script is supposed to replace it anyway it doesn't really
make sense to lose time fixing old stuff.

Hans has just fixed the behaviour of newtexexec.rb, so I would suggest
 you to do the following:

 1. create a file texexec.bat with the following content:
 texmfstart newtexexec.rb %*
and place that file to some arbitrary folder in PATH (but has to be in
front of MikTeX in PATH). So that after you type texexec,
 texmfstart newtexexec.rb will be executed.
You might have to download texmfstart if you don't have it yet
(cont-win.zip from pragma website, simply drop it into MikTeX bin
 folder for example).

You may also try to politely ask the maintainer of MikTeX to include
the texmfstart.exe into MikTeX by default (the more users ask for it,
the more likely will be that he'll do that).

 2. wait until Hans uploads the new beta extract the content from
cont-tfm.zip into the MikTeX tree (to the proper place); I guess that
it should be enough if you only replace the content of /scripts/ruby/*
(Theoretically you can also wait for update in MikTeX, but that would
 definitely take much longer.)

Then cross your fingers and try to compile your file again!

No, the formats are all newly generated after the install of cont-tmf.zip.
The \loadfontfileoncetrue is used in meta-ini.tex by

but what why is it needed ?

Does it reload fonts as defined in Context (typescripts) when btex/etex

it indeed has to do with that; some low level commands deal with

This looks like the neverending(?) problem (see
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.context/7649/match=loadfontfileoncetrue
from 2002) with texexec.pl running the metapost btex ... etex code
with plain tex format instead of ConTeXt format. (newtexexec isn't
fixed yet either) Plain tex doesn't know about the
\loadfontfileoncetrue command, that's why it's complaining.

I might be wrong, but at least that was the problem I experienced on
different computers that I use.

No, just silently hoping that if they have made such a magnificent

It's a pitty that (Con)TeX(t) cannot read and interpret the [messy]

No, just silently hoping that if they have made such a magnificent
work with Antykwa Toruska, they may be planning to do the same with
Antykwa Ptawskiego. But yes, thanks for suggestion - I asked.

as far as i know, Janusz will also update the Ptawskiego

It's a pitty that (Con)TeX(t) cannot read and interpret the [messy]
.enc files, at least to be aware of some missing glyphs. :(

in due time this will happen when we go open type

no, the authors changed the names just before tex live was frozen and
therefore it shows up in all related distributions

If I understand correctly: in type-enc.tex there should be mi-anttri

changed for some time since it would fix the behaviour in other
distributions, but would break the behaviour in TeXLive?

this is what i have now; is this ok with regards to the latest antykwa?

If these names refer to names of .tfm files, then no. (If names mean
anything else, then I don't know.)

I wasn't able to find .tfm files for the following:
   \definefontsynonym [AntykwaTorunska-Math-Letters-RegularItalic] [mi-anttr]
   \definefontsynonym [AntykwaTorunska-Math-Symbols-Regular] [sy-anttr]

   \definefontsynonym [AntykwaTorunska-Math-Symbols-CondRegular] [sy-anttcr]

sy* usually bear an additional z at the end and mi* an additional

what a mess, maybe i should skip next years bachotek in order not to be
exposed to new fonts and just wait till things are settled

i'll send you a file to check (also iwona and kurier); actually i did
check it all just before tex live code freeze time but somehow things
changed anyway

Thanks for the explanation. I now managed to solve both problems, but
there's still a little question left.

(you can copy the ec-* to *-ec and vise versa to solve this; in due time
 it will solve itself)

I did that, but it didn't help. The problem was solved when I copied
two files (sy-anttr.tfm and mi-anttr.tfm from your context distr. into
MikTeX). Is this a matter of different naming conventions between
LaTeX and ConTeXt or anything else? I thought that something could be
wrong in MikTeX, but the original package with Antykwa doesn't include
the two tfm files either.

The following code works both under MikTeX and stand-alone ConTeXt
(however not under live.contextgarden.net), but I don't know how to
 enable ec encoding (\ccaron and \Ccaron - č and Č - don't work).

Regarding the problem with missing ccarons: Despite the fact that
antykwa pol. has ec encoding, quite some glyphs are still missing
there, while ConTeXt thinks that they are present. So I solved the
problem by using the wrong encoding (texnansi) again and now ConTeXt
renders those glyphs for me :)

Thanks again,

[NTG-context] MikTeX and font problems (again)

2005-12-20 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Hello,

The following code works both under MikTeX and stand-alone ConTeXt
(however not under live.contextgarden.net), but I don't know how to
enable ec encoding (\ccaron and \Ccaron - č and Č - don't work).

\starttypescript [antykwa-poltawskiego] [ec]
  \definetypeface [antykwa-poltawskiego] [rm] [serif]
[antykwa-poltawskiego] [default] [encoding=ec]
\stoptypescript
\usetypescript[antykwa-poltawskiego][ec]
\setupbodyfont[antykwa-poltawskiego,rm]

The following code

\starttypescript [antykwa-torunska] [texnansi,ec] % already defined in type-exa
  \definetypeface[antykwa][rm][serif][antykwa-torunska]
[default][encoding=\typescripttwo]
\stoptypescript
\usetypescript[antykwa-torunska][ec]
\setupbodyfont[antykwa,rm]

works under stand-alone ConTeXt, but not under MikTeX (and not under
live.contextgarden.net). It complains about ec-antt.map - cannot open
map file (and about some other files). It actually doesn't exist
since the files are named antt-ec.map.

I'm completely lost regarding font problems and would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Mojca

[NTG-context] miktex

2005-07-18 Thread Hans Hagen

Hi,

I'm trying to make texexec more miktex aware and run into a problem

pdfetex --alias=context -initialize *cont-en
! I can't read TEX.POOL.

does anyone know what is wrong here?

(btw, Christian Schenk now provides a bin only zip so that i can make
minimals for testing which makes it easier for me to answer miktex
related questions)

What happens when you run
  texexec --make --alone
do you get *.fmt and *.mem files?
these need to be present on or moved to the right location
(watch out, pdfetex no longer has efmt as suffix)
One way to figure out what files are present is to use
textools --find cont-en.fmt
this is a ruby script, so you need to have ruby installed
i'm a bit puzzled why you can't get it working since you had it working
some time ago; there have been no changes in texexec cum suis that
influence that, so the main problem is probably in the tds change as
well as the change in suffix (efmt - fmt)

Having recently fought with the same issue (i.e. \setupbodyfont[pos]) with
my recent installation of TeXLive, I found one answer in the user settings
- this might be what you are looking for (don't understand enough of fonts
to say for sure).
The TeXLive cont-sys.rme/cont-sys.tex settings file says:
% If you run into missing font metrics kind of problems,

% \usetypescript[adobekb] [\defaultencoding]
Well, I don't expect my users to understand about changing the
cont-sys.rme/cont-sys.tex file, so the settings need to be in the
file/environment and thus I put this on top of my file instead (I
use ec encoding, seems to work best with Windows):
\usetypescript[adobekb][ec]
\usetypescript[pos] % maybe I don't need this line any more???
\setupbodyfont[pos,10pt]
And it works like a charm, at least with my files. All complaints stopped
at once, which made me *very* happy. Looks like I can soon provide my
dummy users with something easily installable that doesn't need any
tweaking...

\setupbodyfont[pos] is the old method and in that case the \usetypescript[pos] is not
needed
the more modern way is:

\usetypescript[postscript][ec]
\setupbodyfont[postscript,10pt]

that way you can mix typefaces, e.g.

\usetypescript[palatino][ec]
\setupbodyfont[palatino,10pt]

MiKTeX has a kpsewhich that tries to emulate the teTeX/fpTeX
one, but you'd better off use the native MiKTeX tool,
