Hi everyone

I am pleased to invite you to explore together how we can infect France with a
dialogue virus.

Today, as in most of the world, we are experiencing a serious crisis as a
result of the pandemic. A health crisis, which is leading to a major economic
crisis (-6% of French GDP in the first quarter) but also a social crisis that
will worsen terribly in the coming weeks. Anxiety, anger, bankruptcies,
isolation, violence. We see a terrible period of our history taking shape
before our eyes. This is taking place in the context of a climate and
ecological crisis that continues to threaten our future. In a country like
France, where the culture of argument and criticism is more prevalent than the
culture of dialogue, how are we going to re-imagine the future?

For me personally, for us, this means that it is time to spread the culture of
real dialogue much more widely across the country, so that more and more people
are equipped to listen and react in such a way that everyone can feel heard and
find a place in themselves that is not based on fear and anger but on hope,
trust and the will to build something completely new together.

How do we do to create and nurture a "dialogue virus" that can spread
throughout the country during this time of confinement ?

What I have seen in the last few weeks is that we can build processes, online
(as well as face-to-face in the future), that are based on peer-to-peer
interactions and which allows everyone to feel understood, listened to, and to
reflect together in a constructive way.

Will you join to reflect and discuss this with us ?

Re: [OSList] help needed : a good talk/sparring partner

2020-03-31 Thread JL Walker via OSList
Hy Christine and all the others,

I don't know if it was the coronavirus anxiety or what, but I think I have
forgot two things in my last email below.

First, saying hello with a "Hi friends" or whatever other wellcome expression.

Second, saying "thank you so much" for your wonderful notes of the meeting,
that as you must know I'm slow reading and traslating to english and all the
notes and articles that are linked it in it. Thanks you for all that.

I hope I'll be effectively present and actively participate in whenever is the
next one,

Hugs and kisses,

Juan Luis

Re: [OSList] A VIRTUAL OPEN SPACE EXPERIMENT

2020-03-27 Thread JL Walker via OSList
HI EVERYONE

Thank you Michael for sharing my new coordinates, where the next first of April
I’ll be accomplishing my first year of living here.

And it would be wonderful to receive in this place, when the crisis get over,
the visit of my friends of Europe or whatever other part of the world at this
little location of Valencia, near to the sea, called El Saler.

As I told you Michael in my personal email sent to you the other day (Have you
received it my friend?), Coronavirus is remembering us with big force that we
must be prepared to be surprised !!!

In some way as always life is occurring us in a big Open Space.

And that's why definitively also I have come from Chile to Valencia, in the
most profound I'm carrying forward the adventure of taking a look if it is
possible to stay in Europe, using for these my Italian passport that could help
in my citizen integration.

And just two days before my debut in these lands with the facilitation of Open
Space, a state of alarm is declared throughout the Spanish territory, forcing
all its citizens to follow a quarantine that will be renewed perhaps
indefinitely. And well, we had already decided a couple of days before this
decree to postpone the event that we had scheduled for Monday, March 16. Here
you can take a look at the Agora Valencia invitation in the context of the
World Happiness Fest (WHF): https://tinyurl.com/ungelnv

Our intention with the WHF people in Madrid is to carry out this event with the
greatest enthusiasm as soon as the pandemic is overcome.

I will maintained inform you all.

Love & Peace,

Juan Luis

Hello All,

A huge leap, a bold move. Later today and this week, we are launching the
Virtual Agora Gardens as part of the World Happiness Fest activities. It will
be a self-organizing conversational space using the combined technologies of
QiQo Chat (where you can choose your garden and topic) and Zoom (where you then
engage directly in face-to-face conversations on topics of your choice). A
unique feature of this Virtual Agora (gathering) is that people will be hosting
each other. No leaders, facilitators or official hosts. Self-organizing like in
nature!

You can check out the space and concept here;
<https://worldhappinessfest.qiqochat.com/cafe>
https://worldhappinessfest.qiqochat.com/cafe

All are warmly invited to join this experiment, lending your passion and skills
as hosts and facilitators, helping us informally open and hold space for others
and with others. It is free and lasts all week. You can drop in anytime and
stay as long as you want.

As the planning for the World Happiness Fest was underway, there was no way to
predict the alarming and unfolding circumstances of the coronavirus. The
Global Happiness Event is in its third year and has been increasing
exponentially. Over the past weeks and month, the planning team, organizers and
world hosts have been adjusting, creating and responding with such sensitivity,
generosity and heart.

With this latest Virtual Garden initiative, it’s also been a race against the
clock. What was intended to be a small Open Space experiment, complementing the
many activities (presentations, live events, and more) of the World Happiness
Fest is now potentially a place and space that will fill an urgent and
important need for many.

A bit more background:

The World Happiness Fest Week (March 16th - 22nd)
<https://www.happinessfest.world/en/> https://www.happinessfest.world/en/ is
launching today from Madrid. All in-person events and presentations now
“without audience” will be recorded and live streamed free. Many of the
in-person Agoras (gatherings) – about 80 around the world have been cancelled
or scaled down which will certainly shift the attention to virtual. Many of our
colleagues in the Open Space community were/are hosting Agoras where they live:
in Canada, Nashville, Spain, India and other places.

Lucas Cioffi, founder of QiQo Chat and a great friend of Open Space, has worked
tirelessly to develop this virtual garden concept with input from our friends
and colleagues here and there, along the way.

Hi Rob,

So many great moments from Maryville to remember - our night walk under the
stars, the helicopter parked in the yard, the conversations and gracious
hosting for the community gathered.

May you continue your journey of "doing very well"! Your presence will be with
us at this WOSONOS and more.

In appreciation,

Gail

My very best wishes for a great gathering.

My health is defined as “you are doing very well” I am walking with the aid of
a 4 wheel walker and my Doctor and Physiotherapist are constantly telling me to
slow down. My oncologist thinks I am doing very well and I am leaving the
treatment of the cancer in his hands while I get on with the task of living.
The down side of my medication is fatigue so I am limited in what I can do by
this!

Greetings to all who can make the gathering and my very best wishes for the
best possible time for all.

Dearest Harrison and friends,

How sweet of you to post this. It was a prompt for me to watch this again and
easy to track time as dear Riddley is well into his fourth year now! I’ve been
a bit absent form the List as I’ve been SO busy with doing my first love and
making shows back to back to back! A few weeks back riddled grabbed the
microphone and did a very good impersonation of me opening the space. A random
scramble of principles and law of two feet... totally comprehensible. I’m
working on doing one less thing.

I’m currently in Newcastle opening a new show this coming week: “Opening
skinners Box. http://www.improbable.co.uk/work/opening-skinners-box/ 10 great
psychological experiments of the 20th century …. and their perpetrators!

However D still goes strong. Last weekend we held two simultaneous OS events
one about the future of Opera and one for Theatre in Exeter. The reports from
our events have now reached over 2000
http://www.devotedanddisgruntled.com/reports/ and we are touching nearly 100 of
our OS events archived. http://www.devotedanddisgruntled.com/events/archive/.

the conversations continue. our next one is about science and art
collaborating.
http://www.devotedanddisgruntled.com/events/devoted-disgruntled-arts-science/

I still check into the list but get quite overwhelmed. I also noticed that it
was harder to reengage when the List stopped telling me who posts were from
when i got an email and this is probably why vibe been less present.

Every day in rehearsals we open space and we will continue to open space
wherever we go!

lots of love Phelim

Call it nostalgia, senility… whatever. But sitting here in Washington on a
very chilly April evening (snow is forecast) I did remember. Way back in
2001 the world (our world) changed with an event some of us remember. The
years have passed, and probably most (certainly a lot) of people on earth
were not even alive when “it” happened. So Remembrance is not a
possibility. I called it the “World Trade Towers.” You could call it
whatever made sense. And at the time it didn’t make a lot of sense – But we
tried. And we have continued to try. I am not sure we have made too much
progress, but I did recall an article I wrote way back when. Dug it out.
Re-read it… and with some small changes of dates and places, I think I would
say pretty much the same thing today.

Hi Daniel,

Yes, this is a key piece... I see it as very similar in some ways to what Ken
Wilber wrote later,

about the "shadow side of the green meme". (Each meme has its own shadow, as
well as its own gift...)

So, I love "green". I love circles, I love non-hierarchy, etc.
And, part of the "shadow side of the green meme" is how ideologically
anti-structure it can become...

to the point where some people may not even agree that OST does, in fact, offer
a very simple and effective structure.

By way contrast, think of a situation where group of people (who don't know
about OST, and/or, who are having a power struggle around "which process to
use", and/or ) might easily spending a whole weekend arguing about "how to
self-organize ourselves"... with a great deal more pain and frustration and a
great deal less value.

whereas, instead, IF someone knows about OST, and, a clear invitation has been
extended, and, there is enough trust/suspension of disbelief so that
participants are willing to enter into that format,

then, we end up with a very simple and elegant structure that allows people to
self-organize beautifully

at least that's how i see it! :-)

with all best wishes,

THE TYRANNY of STRUCTURELESSNESS

I find this essay extremely interesting. I hope you do, too.

Here is a pertinent quote, from the essay:
"...the idea of "structurelessness" does not prevent the formation of informal
structures, only formal ones."

Circa 1970. Context: the women's movement. Quick summary of the main points:
from the essay...

* During the years in which the women's liberation movement has been
taking shape, a great emphasis has been placed on what are called leaderless,
structureless groups as the main -- if not sole -- organizational form of the
movement.

* The idea of "structurelessness," however, has moved from a healthy
counter to those tendencies, to becoming a goddess in its own right.

* Contrary to what we would like to believe, there is no such thing as a
structureless group.

* This means that to strive for a structureless group is as useful, and
as deceptive, as to aim at an "objective" news story, "value-free" social
science, or a "free" economy. A "laissez faire" group is about as realistic as
a "laissez faire" society; the idea becomes a smokescreen for the strong or the
lucky to establish unquestioned hegemony over others.

* This hegemony can be so easily established because the idea of
"structurelessness" does not prevent the formation of informal structures, only
formal ones.

* For everyone to have the opportunity to be involved in a given group
and to participate in its activities, the structure must be explicit, not
implicit.

* It is this informal structure, particularly in Unstructured groups,
which forms the basis for elites.

Just in case you have not yet encountered the full text of this essay, here it
is:

Dearest Eleder,

How I love all that you've captured in your note most especially the spirit of
invitation and the joy of attending. The fact that there are more and more
international gatherings, big and small, training and reunions, is so
wonderful.

Having co-hosted a WOSonOS in Florida with a wonderful gang of University of
South Florida students and others, I know the love that went into the welcome
and the planning. I felt the same from other host countries where I attended
getting a chance to experience their culture through their preparation, feeling
the anticipatory joy they had in receiving us. It was in those little touches
that I felt it most, local foods, the Open Space posters in their language,
their help as to where to stay (so appreciated when I was going to a foreign
country) and their recommendations on restaurants or perhaps a few places to
visit. No one could argue that some of these things have nothing to do with
Open Space, nor are they required but I would never want to deprive the hosts
of making us feel special and welcome through those littles touches. At the
same time, it can be just as simple as the way Harrison describes it. I totally
love those too.

In our case, the preparations included a few training events and a community
Open Space a few months before WOSonOS. All of this seeded an open space way of
doing and being that continues to sprout in so many surprising ways years later
in the Tampa Bay region and beyond. Most important of all are the spaces that
were opened inside each of us.

That said, I have always felt that those preparations should never distract or
predetermine what happens in Open Space nor should they be a burden or put
pressure on people to do the same.

Life is a mix and in the spirit of self-organizing, I think there's room for
less is more and sometimes a bit more than less. Up to the hosts to decide,
there is no right or wrong, better or less. Reminds me of the Law of 2 Feet.

I sure hope my two feet take me to Manilla cause I want to walk those hundred
miles so that we can "hold the whole wide world in our hands", "whistling all
the while". In case you missed it, I fell in love with this video by Sharon Joy
Chao. Keep humming it all the time. Whether there in spirit or in person, we
feel your welcome and spirit of invitation!

The invitation is always open to everyone. Probably we´ll keep doing bOSONOS

Maybe one day we´ll invite for wosonos. If a good bunch of fellows are eager to

great. If not, very fine too (one less thing to take care of :).

I love attending the international ones from time to time. Enriching, as it

too, people -for me, mainly -.
Krakow was fantastic, as ever.

I find myself very comfortable when attending an osonos where 30-70 people
attend. Enough variety and not too overwhelming. More manageable.

I love knowing that the OS community grows on and on, and we are getting to
have several osonos yearly around the world. This way, when one is really eager
to attend one, the "difficulty" would be on oneself, deciding "which great
party will I attend now"? It seems that something like this is already
happening, great!

I suppose we take on too much responsibility and work because we assume that
the more people come,

[OSList] SPRING EQUINOX

2015-09-23 Thread JL Walker via OSList
Today at 5:21 a.m. began official and astronomically the spring in Chile.

Today the two terrestrial poles are at the same distance from the sun, and
the light shines equally in both hemispheres.

Today the day has the same length as the night everywhere on Earth.

Today in the northern hemisphere autumn begins.

Today is a great day that I propose to celebrate with this song:

Re: [OSList] Date of the 2016 WOSonOS

2015-09-22 Thread JL Walker via OSList
Those dates sounds good for me also Sharon and for nothing about your thanks
my dear. What occurs is that in the matter of having earthquakes in Chile
practically it has become part of our daily life. Sure there has been some
fatal accidents (13) and some serious damages in a particular region, but
really it seems that we have been learning and developing an anti-seismic
culture. And fortunately all this has much to do with the emergence of
self-organized processes, so that earthquakes and open space are very good
friends here (smiles).

For those of you that speaks Spanish or want to practice it, you can read a
good article that a well-known sociologist here has written for an important
newspaper today. The title is "Self-government: Chile has a special ability
to deal with natural disasters, which occur with a frequency that does not
seem accidental. Here lies perhaps one of its greatest competitive
advantages .."

Manila is still in celebratory mood as WOSonOS is returning to the east
after Taipei beautifully hosted it in 2009.

Thank you very much for all the good wishes and cheers, we need this as the
reality of hosting is starting to sink in. Special mention of Juan Luis
Walker who kindly sent his greetings notwithstanding the massive quake that
hit Chile last week. deep bows to you Juan and the people of Chile.

Short of checking for a more auspicious date, I talked to friends and
checked the local weather station on when we can best mount the WOS. And so
we are proposing that the 24th WOSonOS be held from November 9 to 12, 2016
in Manila, Philippines.

Warm hugs to everyone!

Asunto: [OSList] Grief, Griefwork and Renewal -- The core of our work, I
think

Grief and Griefwork are central to the human experience and evolution. To
the extent that Open Space is a useful forum in which human experience and
evolution may take place, both grief and Griefwork are critical elements.
The process itself cannot be rushed. It will proceed at its own pace through
the several phases, none of which can be skipped or short changed, for each
phase contributes an essential element towards the final goal, which is
renewal. No doubt grief is painful, and the process itself is, as the name
implies, real work, but it is good work. In totality, and contrary to the
popular perception, it is not sad. Indeed it is triumphal, even joyful,
creating the way for letting go of what has ended, and leading to new life.
Not bad for a day’s work!

The ground breaking work describing the Griefwork Process was done by
Elizabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book, “On Death and Dying.” It was mind
blowing. In one fell swoop she gave meaning to one of life’s most painful
experiences: Grief. Yes it was, and is, a pain, but pain with genuine gain.
From the terrible moments of ending, something innate draws us forward. From
Shock and Anger, through Denial on to letting go and resolution. We move on.
We don’t have to invent it, even think it. Happens all by itself, every
time, and all the time – if we just let it. And that is a critical point...
we have to let it happen. We can slow it, even abort it, but doing so leaves
us in a life of grief with no resolution.

Kübler-Ross’s focus was on the individual response to Death. My focus has
always been on the larger agglomeration of individuals which we call
organizations, what they are and how they develop and transform. And the
more I thought about it, and lived deeply in the heart of many
organizations, it occurred to me that Griefwork was very much present and
critical. At points of ending, all sorts of endings, the process would
start, sometimes with the whole organization involved. Shock/Anger, Denial,
Memories, Despair, Open Space, Vision – those were my descriptors, and yes,
Open Space had nothing to do with meetings. For me it was that incredible
balance point between what was and what would become. I’ll spare you the
details, but if you are interested it is all there in my first book,
“Spirit: Transformation and Development,” which is yours for a mouse click
at http://openspaceworld.com/Spirit.pdf

Open Space Technology was a late comer in all of this, definitely a funny
thing on the way to the future – until it began to dawn on me that
everything I had experienced and described under the heading of Griefwork in
Organizations showed up in that “funny thing.” Which is why I ended up
calling it Open Space. “Technology” was merely an afterthought, and mostly a
joke.

When an organization is in deep pain caused by market shifts, corporate
raiders, internal conflict, international disorder – whatever – The process
of Griefwork kicks in. The initial response is shock and Anger, blame and
confusion. “They did it!” “How could it happen to us?” Old ways end. New
ways are much less than obvious. And the process rolls on! Should such an
organization find itself sitting in a circle, creating a bulletin board...
if would be fair to say that the Griefwork Process is the script of the
emerging drama. Unwritten, unplanned, maybe unknown – but very much there,
if you just take a moment to see. And if you have never been in such a
situation, you can in fact see it in a remarkable video of USWEST, thanks to
Peggy Holman. http://vimeo.com/25251316

Shortly told, the situation was that a corporate wide redesign (Process
Re-Engineering) had failed massively leaving anger, frustration and
confusion in its wake. In one part of the USWEST world, The State of
Arizona, it had all gone critical. Somehow, Peggy Holman and her colleagues
managed to bring in Open Space, which is marvelously depicted by the video.
When asked to describe the course of events over the three day gathering,
one participant said (in reference to the second day), “Today I think we are
searching for solutions for what we were bitching about yesterday.” There it
is. The passage from shock and anger onto vision and renewal. But don’t just
listen to the words. The “body language” is even more compelling. In the
opening circle you will see a phalanx of angry faces, arms folded, jaws set.
Skip to the end and it is practically a love in. And no, we did not script
it!

Knowing that Griefwork is central to the fabric and flow of an Open Space is
interesting. But becoming familiar with the

I enjoy the constant reminder about the core of OS principles.
I particularly enjoy the principles of open space as practiced by the

I love the living wisdom through this OSLIST.

Hi, everybody!
I do lurk most of the time.

Sometimes the volume is over my capacity.
I sometimes comment.

Sometimes I am reading daily, sometimes weekly, sometimes I do not check for

Definitely a lurker with random bits of input and responses.

I am a frequent 'participant' in the discussion - but almost always only in

Love to learn while lurking.

I lurk here too.
I lurk a lot.

I am an active reader.
I READ every message, and learn a lot!

Yep, I mostly lurk.

Gratitude to still be amongst this community.
Grateful for our co-learning.
MASSIVELY GRATEFUL for all I have learned.
Always a grateful and admiring learner.
A learning-by-listening kind of lurk.

My active participation is in the listening / reading space at the rim.
Not posting often, but taking in the gifts of this list with much gratitude

And in applying the principles of practice in my own life a lot of the time.

Often I have so many things to do
that I don’t give myself the time to sit down and write a thorough, well

Now that I write this,
I realize that it is not necessary to put the bar that high.
It does not always have to be of academic quality –
a simple sharing will do, too.
So this is a note to myself.

I’m a passionate lurker.
Love to learn while lurking.

I am always here!

I appreciate the active participation of some players who represent the
thoughts of many others.
Always appreciate new voices and perspectives as well.
I feel connected to many of the topics that have been shared here in this
group.

Hey - I'm here too.
I lurk here too.
I lurk a lot.
Me too!

Not posting often, but taking in the gifts of this list with much gratitude
and passing them on in the world.
And in applying the principles of practice in my own life a lot of the time.

Often I have so many things to do
that I don’t give myself the time to sit down and write a thorough, well
thought reply.
Now that I write this,
I realize that it is not necessary to put the bar that high.
It does not always have to be of academic quality –
a simple sharing will do, too.
So this is a note to myself.

Hi!
Hey!
Hey OS List Folks
Another lurker.
I lurk often and read a lot!

I use the list and the amazing contributions as inspiration to remind me why
I love doing this.
And that there are other ways and people out there
doing things differently.

I think every single posting leads some us somewhere, even if those places
aren't so obvious.
I especially like when the search is fragile and the outcome uncertain.

Thank you for being and doing.

I am always fascinated by the conversation and learn tons.

Hello, dear friends.

As your current OSLIST Poet Laureate I wish to continue to create found
poetry, in the practice of one of our late great past Poet Laureates, Ms.
Laurel Doersam.

I sit with a conversation you have had and think about how it comes apart
and fits back together again in a new and poetic way.

I enjoy showing you back … yourselves.

Happy reading - Lisa Heft

In Honor of the Lurkers

Hey…

I am a lurker and sometimes contributor.
I am one of the frequent lurkers.
I am proud to be a frequent lurker.
Mostly lurk but occasionally comment.
Mostly lurking for many years.
A regular lurker.
Read the list. Daily.

Mostly silent, sometimes reading, often feeling and holding space.

Even trawling through pages and pages of repetitive posts on the digest
format doesn't keep me away.

Hey - I'm a regular lurker.
I'm a regular lurker and learner.

I enjoy the constant reminder about the core of OS principles.
I particularly enjoy the principles of open space as practiced by the
participants:
No admonishments about perceived “off topic” threads,
No shut-downs when (if) there’s a flurry of un-subscriptions due to the
above.
Such a positive list with world wide participants, so great.
I am in love and in debt to this beautiful community.

Enjoying…learning….practicing…

Lurk
Hey YES!
Hello
I’m a permanent lurker
Same here.

It's enlivening to see both the old hands and the new waves of Open Space
lovers.
A cool combination of experienced practitioners and new comers.

The experience, curiosity, wisdom and generosity demonstrated through this
list is very important to me, my work and life.
I love the living wisdom through this OSLIST.
I enjoy the reflections and the enthusiasm.
I enjoy the fresh perspectives offered by REAL OSers.
I feel connected to the community and I get inspiring ideas.
From time to time I cannot resist to send again a tiny contribution to say
hello I’m still there.

Hi.
Hi!
Hi, everybody!
I do lurk most of the time.

Sometimes the volume is over my capacity.
I sometimes comment.

Sometimes I am reading daily, sometimes weekly, sometimes I do not check for
a few months,
and then simply delete the build up.
Applying the law of two feet with my two eyes.
And then I start again

Definitely a lurker with random bits of input and responses.

I am a frequent 'participant' in the discussion - but almost always only in
my head.
And I have many very fruitful conversations with you all – in my head.
I engage in the conversation, try on different responses.
I keep thinking of writing, but then see all the wisdom on the list and
think, that’s it. Why repeat.
I always learn…and I know the next time I have a question there will always
be somebody to help answer it for me.

Michael... And Everybody. Thanks for the B-Day greetings, and just to be
totally clear. Michael said I was celebrating my 80th. I understand why he
said that... but I only said (Facebook) that I was entering my 80th year. So
I get to celebrate increasing 80ishness for the next twelve months. Just
think of the trouble I can cause :-)

Dear List,

our great friend, brother and just sent a note in which he also
mentioned his 80th birthday today.
I send a note back and thought I let you know just in case you also missed
the date.

Greetings from Berlin where I just revelled in memories of his 75th birthday
party on his visit here conducting his Practice of Peace
program. Among many other things someone had set up a pretty impressive
martini cocktail bar... just a reminder on what it took to have him discover
OST.

Cheers
