why does he believe that your need to support him is more of a priority than
supporting the woman? It's inappropriate towrite comments like
that in the notes. Perhaps he needs to be reminded that midwife means
'with woman' not 'with doctor'! : )
To my knowledge there aren't any studies on outcomes, in relation to
whether VE's are done or not.When I worked in a birth centre many women
birthed without a VE.There are so many other indicators of
progress. Actually my Mum had seven kids and said she NEVER had a
VE!

stood up for a labouring woman who did not wish to have a VE when the GP
ob wanted to do one as how else would he know whether she was
progressing or not. He's writing an incident report about me for
not supporting him.He asked how I planned to manage the labour and
I told him that the woman was managing the labour and I would be worried
if shebecame worried.The woman proceeded to birth without
problem. Just feeling upset and hurt as he is my GP and we usually
work well together, but probably most other women are not as strong in
standing up for themselves.

But I am currently childbearing and I guess things have got so much worse in the last 20 or so years. When I was quizzed about my obstetric history (please!) by a GP. He commented that I was fortunate. And yes my reply was true to form. Absolutely fortunate I said to have an independent midwife for each pregnancy! JC

If you are called to a meeting Joy make sure you take a personal advocate with you. Puts them on the back foot if they are accountable for what is said in the meeting when you have a witness. Joy this is a very disturbing story - coercion to have a VE without full consent is assault and battery. We must never be complicit in this. I cant believe you were reported for doing your job well. You have also protected the hsp and drs from potential charges and legal proceedings. Good Grief Most of what I would like to say is probaobly not safe to write anywhere. Dr Mourik I have worked with in Wodonga as a student. He come here to Wang occassioanlly as a Locum much to the distress of all the midwives. Arrogant is an understatement. He "saves" women and tells them so. He is a skilled obstetrician, no doubt, but I wouldn't want him any where near me if I was birthing. An example that comes to mind when I was a student was when he was performing a perineal repair and smugly asked the husband "Want me to throw in a few extra stitches, to tighten her up?" This man is very self assured, articulate, hmmm perhaps you should just ring me at home on this one Cath. (03) 57221605. Hi Cath, I dont know anything about him and would not pass judgment on a person on a public forum anyway (or possibly privately either), so what Id suggest is to consider the idea that he/or a colleague in his field might be against midwifery led care and think through all the possible arguments that might be put forth such as perceived insufficient midwifery training or perceived insufficient midwifery experience or perceived insufficient confidence professionally for midwives in Australia and then develop counter arguments to put forth, particularly with regard to the wonderful work being done currently for midwifery in Australia refer to ACMI. Thanks Julie, I wasn't thinking of only negative information. more along the lines as to where has he been working, rural practise etc. This is a review of obstetric services and I guess my concern is the ongoing domination of the medical viewpoint and minimising the midwifery input. Thanks for your reply.
