 Hi guys,
Right now I use a basic sound editor called Fast Edit. I find it
useful for doing what I need to get done. When I bought it about 3 years
ago, I wanted something I'd used before and I didn't want to learn a whole
 new program.
I've looked at goldwave and sure it's much more powerful with effects,
de-popping records, batch conversion to any formats, that kind of thing.
I don't like the editing interface, how you can't hear right where that
final bracket drops. I suppose I can get used to it. The price of gold
wave is tempting, sound forge on the other hand costs more and that's
really all I know about it. What do you all like and or dislike about
 goldwave and soundforge? Thanks.

Re: gold wave vs sound forge

2006-05-23 Thread Chuck Adkins
Hello. I prefer Sound Forge because of the scrubbing features it has. I also
like the effects but don't get me wrong, Gold Wave is a very good program.
For me Sound forge is a little bit more accessible. Of course, Sound Forge
was the first editor I had experience with and that I think does color an
oppion sometimes. It's like finding a car though. You can find 6 people who
like Fords and 6 people who like shevys. The best way is first, can you
afford both programs in question and then second, download and try out each
demo.

Just my thoughts,

Chuck

P.S. I think some of the audio I've produced using the Noise Reduction
plugins with Sound Forge seem to have better quality then some of the NR
effects I've used with Sound Forge.

I like SF's Ctrl-k thing. One can listen to a cut before one actually
applies it with Ctrl-k. If it doesn't sound right, one can shift the
left or right marker a bit and listen again with Ctrl-k until it sounds
right and then make the cut.

Re: gold wave vs sound forge

2006-05-23 Thread David Tanner
SoundForge has a lot more options for cleaning up a file, and the noise
reduction features allow adjustment within an option that lets you really fine
tune just how much reduction you will get. The noise gateway settings are much
more flexable too. Also, the ability to have a 20 band equalizer beats
Goldwave hands down.

I like the batch processing in Goldwave a lot, and it is particularly good on
large batches of files located in a number of folders that can all have the
same process applied at the same time without any human intervention.

Another very nice feature in Goldwave is the easy to understand and use of
marking a file and then letting Goldwave split it into separate files. this
works particularly well if you have recorded an entire record, gotten the file
down to a point where the silence between songs is really good, then Goldwave
can take over and separate the selections in the album into one file per song
very nicely, and very accurately.

As far as close editing the audio file I really don't think that the speech
user can do better than Studio Recorder. It is so easy to be so precise in
editing that eliminating one little pop that couldn't be gotten rid of any
other way is very easy to do with Studio Recorder.

Re: gold wave vs sound forge

2006-05-23 Thread David Tanner
I think that the individual needs to take a look at each, decide what they
really need to do, and after all that then make the decision on how much they
are willing to pay to get the editor that will do what they need to do. I
really like SoundForge, but I do a lot of audio for radio programs, etc. The
person simply wanting to get records to MP3 and clean the files up to make them
sound good may decide that they don't need all the features of Soundforge, and
that they can good enough quality with Goldwave or Audasity or something else.

Then you don't begin to know how many rich features you are missing. Once you
find out about all the features you are missing you will be surprised at how
much more powerful it is than you realize without speech customization.

Re: gold wave vs sound forge

2006-05-23 Thread Bruce Toews
This is a very fair assessment. I've fooled around with Sound Forge a few
times and gotten nowhere with it, but have since come to the conclusion
that Gold Wave suits my personal needs more than adequately. I record all
my radio shows and song parodies with it. I am also not a believer in
noise reduction unless absolutely necessary as a completely last resort,
so SF's superior noise reduction, which I certainly acknowledge, is of
little interest to me. But as David said, if you want to know what's best,
check each program's Web page out and look at the offered features and
decide which are most important to you and how much you're willing to pay
for them.

person simply wanting to get records to MP3 and clean the files up to make
them sound good may decide that they don't need all the features of
Soundforge, and that they can good enough quality with Goldwave or Audasity
 or something else.

Re: more iloe questions

2006-05-23 Thread Chris Skarstad
wow, what a big piece of crap! that thing is!! Couldn't pay me enough
money to buy one of those.

Honestly I would just forget it and go buy yourself something that
*actually* works.
Sorry you wasted your money on something so incredibly inaccessible.

I got some mp3 files saved to my Iloe but can't make it synchronize or
recognize WMA files. Also, the player doesn't have a true resume feature
which would make it difficult to listen to anything long like a book or
even a long show. It fills itself with MP3 files but not the WMA
material I bought. I use windows media player but can't seem to pick a
folder and have it copied over and play. Any suggestions? Thanks. Kurt
