add songs to sam party dj

2007-09-04 Thread russell Bourgoin
Hi Guys and gals,

I figured out how to route output in sam party dj to a
different sound card, so I went ahead and paid to register it. Now,
though, I can't figure out how to add more songs to your data
base. I've recently added fifty albums worth of music to my hard
drive. How to make sam know about them? Thanks for any help.

Hi, Yes, it works with my Comcast cable box. There was a cord that came
with the Adapt Tech that ended with a special end that went on the front
 of
the cable box. That is how my keyboard commands were able to affect the
 cable box.

You'll want to have your coaxial cable going in to your computer, so you
will have maximum control of your TV commands.

Good luck and let me know if I can be of any more help.

Hi, Arthur, are you using it with rax files, though? I know it works with
wma files pretty well, but it's the rax files I've had trouble with.

Hi, Jim. You may be right, but it seems that allmusicconverter converts
 rax
files into mp3, which sound taxi doesn't seem to. My gripe with all
 music
converter is that sometimes the mp3's that it produces can have weird
 little
skips or odd repititions in the tracks. I've written to the programmers
about that, so I hope they can fix that. Or is it me? Smile.

 Pece,
 Kathy

ever. It's called, Express rip and it's free, too. It comes bundled with a
file conversion program which seems just as accessible and costs the same.
This thing ripped a 60 minute disk in a couple of minutes. It supports
ripping to 20 file types. I know my enthusiastic response might be a little

Hi.

If you're looking to retain exact audio copies of your CD's before selling
them then you'll need to use a lossless format. I'd recommend lossless
  WMA
and using windows media player to rip your CD's rather than nero.

As you're probably aware, next to MP3, WMA is the most commonly supported
format. It's also a proprietary microsoft format and I don't see
  microsoft
going away any day soon so the longevity of the format should be
  guaranteed
over any other.

Lossless formats take up around 50 to 75% of the original CDDA equivalent
  so
you'll need a lot of disc space to hold 650 CD's. I've currently got
  around
700 CD's ripped in lossless format and they're taking up just over 270GB
  of
disc space. You'll also need to back up your hard drive because if you
  have
a hard drive failure, you're going to want to get your music back from
  your
saves. I currently use 3 hard drives, a master and 2 back up drives.

WAV files will take up more space than lossless WMA or FLAC files and they
don't support ID3 tags so I would disuade you of using this format. They
don't sound any better than lossless formats either so I don't see why
anyone would waste disc space on this format.

If you use windows media player to rip your collection you'll be able to
  set
it up to automatically start ripping when you insert a CD and eject it on
completion. I don't think you can do this with nero but I could be wrong.

Regards.

Well a couple of things here, I do it all the time for a variety of
reasons. I now have a DVD player that plays DVD Discs and all audio
formats I've put past it, these include FLAC, MP3 and AAC/M4A and it
was quite a cheap unit too, the Pioneers should do the job.
Next, I have all my CD'S on DVD'S as Cue/FLAC format, this means that
I can use a ripper like EAC, Max or Easy CD DA extractor to copy a
file pair and have that pair converted to an exact Audio CD of my
source, convert instantly to another format such as MP3 etc so you
  may wish to consider this.
I'm going away myself now from DVD to hhard drive, as has been
mentioned before they're so damn cheap these days and the storage
capacity is so good but then again, I started with DVD'S and you have
  to start somewhere smile.

a video capture device is a device that has audio and video inputs on it, and
a
USB output that digitizes the signal from the vcr. a software such as
pinnacle
converts the captured video and let you convert it to dvd, and other formats.

Re: Some CDEX questions

2007-09-04 Thread Kelly Pierce
No, the popular commercial programs do not do this, likely because it takes
a lot longer to produce a higher quality rip than one of average quality.
While fully accessible, EAC has so many configuration options that it is a
geek's paradise.

There is a lot of documentation available online in accessible format. The
program can be operated from the keyboard, and all the menus can be
accessed with a screen reader.

Re: mp3 question

2007-09-04 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi.

VBR is recognised as the best way to rip to both maximise the sound quality
while at the same time minimise the file size. If you set your lower limit
to 128kbps and your upper limit to 320kbps and choose the highest quality
then you won't hear any difference between that track and one ripped at
320kbps constant bitrate. You will though have a smaller file as the
encoder will use what it needs to gain the best results. I use these
settings when I'm producing mp3's for my portable player and typically the
files come out at around the 256kbps mark. Less complex music may yield
lower bitrates.

Regards.

Re: Some CDEX questions

2007-09-04 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi.

Windows media player has error correction so be sure to set it if you're
using this program to rip audio CD's. It will rip much more slowly when
this is enabled but you will get excellent results.

To set the error correction flag,
go to tools, options and locate the audio tab. Press enter on the
properties button for your CD/DVD drives and then check the checkboxes to
set error correction on.

The CD transport in your computer is key to getting good results. As
mentioned, EAC will scan until it finds 2 close matches in extracted WAV
forms but that doesn't mean that it's perfect as if your CD transport isn't
great then you'll get some very close imperfect WAV files and it'll have
just taken you longer to get there.

I've found laptops have the best CD transports as they tend to have a raised
middle onto which you can press the CD and have it held firmly. CD
transports I've seen on desktops have been quite flimsy at times and the
disc can slide about when spinning. This is a great way to generate lots of
jitter, particularly on the latter tracks which are on the outside of the
disc and so are therefore being rocked around a lot more than the inner
tracks on a flimsy transport.

Regards.

If it's anything like Broadcaster, it's a two-step process, made a lot
easier if all your albums are in one place, inside one folder.

1. Create a new category or use the one SAM created for you when you
installed it.

2. Locate that category in the category list and press CTRL/D, the
shortcut for add new folder. A standard select folder dialog will
open. Browse to the folder you want to add and press ENTER (same as

database.

Hope this helps.

ASX streams -- plays, but no audio heard

2007-09-04 Thread Mike Pietruk
ok! Came across a truly weird problem
last night when attempting to listen to the FSU Clemson game via WHOO,
ESPN1080, Orlando.
The stream, on my desktop, launches as it is going to play, and running
times are shown, but no audio is heard.
Went to the notebook, and no problems.
I found similar behavior on the wmp streams for NFL Field Pass Audio.
This behavior on my desktop is whether the stream is played via WMP,
RealPlayer, or Winamp.
Other streams work fine with normal audio output.
These same streams that won't play won't also play or record on my desktop
using RePlay AV.
What possibly could be causing this weirdness on .asx streams while all
other stream types play and record normally?
Am truly stumped.
As noted before, my notebook pc verifies that the streams are up and
running.

Yep, with today's cheap hard drive prices, why settle for anything less
than the quality of a purchased music CD? Of course, you can then
create other formats from your perfect lossless masters such as lower
bitrate mp3's to play on portables where disc space is at a premium.

This is exactly what I do.
I have Wenamp V5.35, but when I want to rip CDs, I fall back on

And I rip all of my Cds in the WMA lossless format.
And so when I make compilation CDs, they turn out sounding like store

 Hi.

If you're looking to retain exact audio copies of your CD's before
 selling
them then you'll need to use a lossless format. I'd recommend
lossless
 WMA
and using windows media player to rip your CD's rather than nero.

As you're probably aware, next to MP3, WMA is the most commonly
supported
format. It's also a proprietary microsoft format and I don't see
 microsoft
going away any day soon so the longevity of the format should be
 guaranteed
 over any other.

Lossless formats take up around 50 to 75% of the original CDDA
equivalent
 so
you'll need a lot of disc space to hold 650 CD's. I've currently got
 around
700 CD's ripped in lossless format and they're taking up just over
270GB
 of
disc space. You'll also need to back up your hard drive because if
you
 have
a hard drive failure, you're going to want to get your music back
from
 your
saves. I currently use 3 hard drives, a master and 2 back up drives.

WAV files will take up more space than lossless WMA or FLAC files and

 they
don't support ID3 tags so I would disuade you of using this format.
They
don't sound any better than lossless formats either so I don't see
why
anyone would waste disc space on this format.

If you use windows media player to rip your collection you'll be able
to
 set
it up to automatically start ripping when you insert a CD and eject
it on
completion. I don't think you can do this with nero but I could be
 wrong.

 Regards.

going
to sell the disks want the sound to be of really good quality but I
 can't
afford to make duplicates in CDA format. I'd also like to be in a
 position
to change the format if a new one comes along that's enough better
to
justify it. I plan to use, Nero 7 Ultra Edition and rip to flak but
I'm
open to all suggestions. also, I've used Roxio products for years
but I
switched because the latest version of their program was less
accessible
than Nero. therefore, if anyone has a tutorial or general

I am having a problem with Jaws. Sometimes it has a tendency to stop
working, and will say blank when there is a document that has been
 loaded.
What is causing this problem? Could it be a lack of memory that is
causing jaws to fail? I hope that some of the techies on the list just
might have a solution to this problem.

A standard select folder dialog will
open. Browse to the folder you want to add and press ENTER (same as
clicking OK). SAM will read all the tags and add everything to its
database.

Hope this helps.

removing scratches from a record

2007-09-04 Thread Randy Tijerina
Friends, i sincerely apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this.
I'm going to give it a shot.
How do you remove visible scratches from a record?
let's say that you are playing the record. Ok?
now, towards the middle of it, it gets stuck.
is there any way to do this without doing any harm to the record at all?
i'd appreciate your help. Randy.

Before replying to your question re output tips I should think that list
members need to know if you have copywrite permission to sell the tracks you
plan to rip.

I have 650 audio disks I plan to rip to my external drive. Since I'm going
to sell the disks want the sound to be of really good quality but I can't
afford to make duplicates in CDA format. I'd also like to be in a position
to change the format if a new one comes along that's enough better to
justify it. I plan to use, Nero 7 Ultra Edition and rip to flak but I'm
open to all suggestions. also, I've used Roxio products for years but I
switched because the latest version of their program was less accessible
than Nero. therefore, if anyone has a tutorial or general configuration
tips, I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance.

Randy.

try cleaning the spot on the record or try running a finger nail through
 the
gruve to see if you can remove the scratch. Making the tone arm lighterr
will sometimes get you over the hump.

Don't use water. Small bubbles will form in the groove, and you could
end up in a worse situation. Alcohol is the thing to use. If the problem
is dirt, this will fix it, but if the vinyl is damaged, there is not a
lot you can do.

RE: removing scratches from a record-Don't use water

2007-09-04 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. It really depends what is causing the problem. If it is a hardened
piece of matter then that's one thing and if large enough, can be removed
with your fingernail (gently). If it is a scratch then trying to rectify it
yourself may cause further damage and you may have to take the disc to a
specialist disc restorer but I would imagine they are thin on the ground
these days. If it is matter, then to use water will only turn any dust in
the grooves into sludge and when dried out and hardened make the Disc
quality worse. I would suggest you go to a Hi-Fi Store and get a cleaning
kit. Many years ago when I used vinyl I used a disc cleaner called
Discwasher This was a high quality wet clean with specially formulated
cleaning fluid and a brush that removed any residue from the grooves. If
these are still available or something like it. it will gradually soften the
piece of matter and eventually dissolve it and it will be removed. Under no
circumstances use water. I speak here from experience. Walter.

Hi Sorry, You're right, that didn't make sense. Actually, I can't remember
right now, how it works. The only thing I remember, is that I needed a
cable splitter, so perhaps they both hook up.

I just had my whole system taken down today, because I am moving. I'll keep
your message and email address and get back to you in a little over a week,
when I hope to have my system back up and running.

Take care, Vicky

2007-09-04 Thread VICTORIA VAUGHAN
Hi, Yes, it must. I was able to record programs I was watching and then
able to read the titles of what had been taped so that I could click on
which ever one I wanted to watch.

What I haven't yet figured out how to do, is set up to tape a program. I
know it does that, but I don't know how.

Take care, Vicky

Hi, One time when I was trying to record a record with skips, I taped about
4 quarters on top of the needle casing. That forced it down in to the vinyl
and did a fairly good job.

Good luck, Vicky

Don't use water. Small bubbles will form in the groove, and you could
end up in a worse situation. Alcohol is the thing to use. If the
 problem

Is windows media accessible? Does it produce good mp3s? What version should I
try.

  Regards.

  Kevin

Not necessarily. CDEX doesn't have error correction and wave form
comparison, rescanning the same track two dozen times. EAC can often
salvage a scratched disc. there is much discussion on the Internet
comparing the two programs, check it out.

if you really want the highest quality rips possible, use Exact Audio
 copy
with the Lame extreme preset. With the current version of Lame,
 variable
bit rates with joint stereo deliver the extra fullness and richness
   when
 it
is needed. EAC does offer a preset for 320 CBR, but the developer
   calls
  this setting insane.

EAC, unlike CDEX, scans each track, looking for two exactly identical
 wave
forms or the closest exact match possible. It repeatedly scans a
   tract,
dozens of times if needed, before ripping it. CDEX does not perform
 this
  error checking analysis.

If you want the best rips in town, use EAC. It takes longer to learn,
 but
the rips sound really great. CDEX is easy to use and I still rip
   audio
books with it. For industrial strength music output, I use EAC.

   are
 the

Is it good to enable jitter correction?

Sound Forge -- Finding Gaps in Audio

2007-09-04 Thread Matthew2007
Hi all,

Does anyone know if its possible to use sound forge to find gaps in audio?
That is, I have many 1 hour long audio files and don't know if there are any
gaps in them as I recorded these streams off of the internet. Rather than
listening to the files in their entirety, I would like to quickly find my
way to any part of the file that has a piece of silence caused by an audio
gap. If this feature does in fact exist within Sound Forge, please let me
know what its called and I'll research it from there.

big thanks,

Matthew
