The replay products can record from the sound card in addition to capturing the stream. They will capture your system sounds and synthesizer unless you also use the enhanced soundcard driver from replay which captures the sound as it enters your soundcard and thus does not get the synthesizer or other sounds. I find the enhanced sound card works well for me but similar drivers have been know to give some people problems. Fortunately, it is easily uninstalled should it prove problematic. I can only repeat that in spite of Chris's problems, I use the enhanced sound card in replay whenever I use the program. The only adaptation I make is that after replay or any other addition, I always go back into my volume control and change back to my sound card drivers. It lets things record and play better for me, but I uncheck the use default driver so if a program wants a different one, it can get to it. I have never had any problems with replay's enhanced sound card. Some do have problems, however, and they acknowledge this and advise that one immediately uninstall it if one does. Uninstalling this feature is relatively easy. If you capture streams directly, this feature is irrelevant. I have a dial-up connection, however, so using the stream capture feature will not work for me. You have to be already connected to the net for it to work properly. Most DSL and cable users use the capture stream feature and for them the enhanced sound card feature is irrelevant. My need is to set up a recording so the computer will dial in, make the recording, and hang up when done till the next scheduled recording. The only reason I use AV is because some day I might want to record something with its video. Of course, if I magically had broadband access, then the AV features I can not use would come into play. As far as I know you can listen for however long the recording is. It may be the stream itself, but I don't know. Change the output setting from mp3 which I think may be one of the most vulnerable parts of the program and see if that makes a difference. If you are getting distortion in your recording, it may be your record volume may be set too high. There is a box to check in settings if you want replay to try to automatically optimize your volume, or you can go to the volume control which is likely in your systray and adjust the record volume. This is only a guess as just don't know enough about your set up to say anything more definite. Since I have dial-up, I can't vouch that my answer is totally correct, but I believe you want to leave dial-up unchecked. If you have a proxy you should include its name and port, but if you haven't had to do that previously for some program or other, you likely don't have one and needn't worry about it. These choices are located under the settings menu found on the main screen. Find settings and press the spacebar on it. Shift tab once to be in the list of control tabs, and right arrow to connections. Be sure that dial-up is unchecked, and unless you know better, make sure proxy is unchecked as well. See if this makes a difference. Replay-Av 7.04, the latest version is as easy to use as previous versions but can be made more complicated if one so chooses. The latest version allows greater choices in how the MP3 is recorded. One can record streams directly without going through the soundcard at all although I am not sure that this will work as well with a dial up as it will for someone who is online. Though some menu items have moved about, it is essentially the same interface. Replay radio 7.04 works the same as AV minus the ability to record streams that are not passed through the sound card and it will not record video as AV will. re-play radio 6.03 claims it will receive podcasts and will work with win 98 but I am not sure how well. I use replay-radio on a regular basis with few if any problems, but I've never really fully explored the podcast feature. The two times I've put any real effort into it came out with a 50 per cent grade, one batch of pods were downloaded, one batch failed. Haven't taken the time to go back and work more at it. Well, not using JAWS, I'm guessing here but I don't think it is a JAWS issue. I think you have checked inadvertently or otherwise the mute recording check box when setting up the recording. When I use the enhanced sound card driver, all sounds come through the computer including speech, but only the stream is recorded. I do have my sound card set in the control panel or sndvol32 to use my sound cards drivers and not the replay radio drivers for both recording and playback. Replay doesn't seem to mind, all other sounds seem to work a bit better, and I can still use the enhanced soundcard selection when making a recording of a stream. So, assuming something else isn't doing this in your system, check to be sure you haven't checked the mute box in your scheduled recordings. I believe it is on the 4th or 5th tab of the show's properties sheet. My inclination is to think it is on the fifth tab, but I'm not quite sure and don't want to stop here to call up the program and look for it. You can easily do that yourself. Real Player and JFW

1. The program comes with a good help file or links to help on the net but there is not a good hotkey list that I've seen nor for that matter are there many hotkeys that I've noticed. On the other hand, it is quite accessible. It will record shows in most formats but does seem to require that you have the requisite player (windows media or real) on your computer. You can choose how to save the files: as WAV or several levels of MP3 files. I think there is also an option to save them as WMA files but am not sure. The program is not hard to use but does require one to remember that the spacebar activates most buttons rather than the enter key. There are a couple of times when this is not the case, but these seem self evident when relevant. Actually, for many soundcards, you can make recordings without the replay radio drivers. I suspect you need them if, like myself, you want to use the extended sound card driver. This is not automatically loaded onto your computer as it can in some cases cause problems, but was revamped and brought back into the program by popular demand because it allows one to record the stream before it hits the sound card screening out any system sounds and this includes speech. It is easily removed from the control panel add-remove programs option specifically because they figure that if it does cause problems on a specific system, the owner will want to remove it. I use it regularly because it causes no significant problems on my machine. In the volume control for most sound cards you can get to which driver to mark as the default. Not sure how this differs from sound card to sound card but I am pretty sure you can set the native soundcard drivers as the default and the replay radio drivers will not start with windows. I used the replay-radio enhanced sound card driver so I can avoid recording system sounds and my speech. I set the computer's sound controls to default to the driver that came with the soundcard on the computer. Again, I think I reached this and made my selections using the volume control, under properties. Larry, now that I think about it, there is a setting that starts replay-radio when windows starts and I believe minimizes it to the systray. This can be changed in the settings section which is found in the main menu near the end of choices. When the program starts, shift tab about three or four times and you should get to settings. Hit the spacebar, when you do. I believe the choice of starting replay-radio when windows starts is in the general tab of that menu I think. I never thought of this as I keep boxes like this unchecked as a rule and did it so long ago I'd forgotten about the option. select the station you want to listen to if you already have something scheduled on it or go to the add show menu, pick a station, and proceed through marking it is unscheduled. Now once you have completed the menus, that station will always be available in the initial menu of replay-radio. Tabbing through that menu you will come to the item: tune to station. So from then on, open the program, tab over to the list of shows and arrow down till the one you want is selected, say what, then shift tab back to tune and hit the space bar. The same actions can be taken with use of mouse keys or partially with arrow keys, but this is the simplest way I can suggest for tuning in a station. No recording will be made but the station will come in. If you want to record at that time, first select the station or a show on that station from your preset list, then use the record now function. I use replay-radio regularly and am quite satisfied. Have none of the extra add-on programs so can't comment on them. With replay-radio and the additional enhanced driver, I can record streams and have them divided into chunks of my choosing. One can record either setting programming as with a VCR scheduling the recordings in advanced, or one can find something and record at the spur of the moment. Shows can be selected and set to record automatically on specific days, to record only once, or can be unscheduled and only recorded when you choose to do so. This is most helpful when you have a station and occasionally they have something you just discovered and want to get. I believe you can choose under settings in re-play radio whether you want the program to set the volume controls or not. If you uncheck this, the volumes should remain where you had them set. Also, you may have to check your settings to be sure the soundcard drivers and not replay-radio drivers are being used when you open sound forge. This can be checked under the volume control, options, properties tab. The optional esc driver replay radio offers may also be a part of the problem if you installed it. It sometimes conflicts with other sound drivers. Hi Gary and everybody, Using Winmx and similar programs is best with prepaid unlimited traffic, and only to some extent affected by having a fast connection. It's file-sharing, which means that you download files from somebody elese's computer, so the download spped will also depend on that person's connection. Obviously, the faster your connection is, the quicker you will get a file, but the thing is that you can't always expect somebody on the network to have the file you want. Therefore, P2P programs have a clever system of permanently searching the file you requested on the network, and as soon as anyone who has it comes up on the network, the download will begin. I personally think it's good fun to find little surprises in my download folder every morning. I'll say again that the networks are huge, so the chances are very high that you will find what you want instantly, but if you really have a burning need for some particular obscure song, I suppose online CD sphops will be your best bet. From what I gather, most people on this list use Power DVD, But I like Win DVD more, probably because I understand its inteface better. Hi Doug, I agree it can be annoying not to be able to get what you want immediately. But then again, you don't say the shop is bad because you couldn't get your favourite biscuits from it the day you wanted them. You may quite happily get them tomorrow. The same is with Winmx an other file-sharing programs. You can't expect to find absolutely everything in one palce on this earth smiles. They all worked (and Winmx and Emule still work) extremely well, and they are a great choice if you want something right here and right now. Both rare and mainstream music can be found rather easily. If you do prefer subscription sites though, I'd suggest www.emusic.com/ They have an excellent collection and reasonable prices. There two possible problems assuming the speaker cables are good and properly connected. 1: in volume controls, under properties, you may have checked the mute for stereo mixer but not for mono. Second, in the audio settings for speaker set up, you may have the wrong speaker choice checked. The crystal drivers are on the disk used to install your mother board. If you have that disk and insert it, it should bring up a menu which includes audio. You may need a pair of functioning eyes present for that one, I really don't remember whether it speaks or not. I suspect it is a simple setting that is preventing the program being read by Kevin or else he is getting stuck at the initial screen where it asks if you want to register or continu as a demo. Kevin, the sound quality varies with the selection you make. In the screen which is fourth in the five that are listed across the top: show, tuning, schedule, sound and record (snot really sure about the order or names of the last two), is the place to choose sound quality. A M and A M-stereo are to be avoided. MP3 28MB per hour is the first decent choice and the next couple above that are better. One can record directly to WAV files but I haven't tried that so can't say how that comes out. I recommend avoiding the compress speech option as it tends to distort a bit. This could probably be compensated for by decreasing the volume, but I haven't experimented with that yet. When you get more comfortable with the program, you may want to download and install the enhanced sound card driver which captures stuff before it hits the sound card and so avoids recording any system noises or software speech. The place that affects outcome most is record volume. There is a preset which I think sets volume at about 50 per cent. This works fine for most stations, but others tend to come up either too soft or too loud thus distorting. Unfortunately, most of these problems are not product specific and occur with other recording packages. I haven't used this for alternative uses as with a microphone, turntable or the like, but for streams, it has served me very well. I rarely use it for music, however, so can't say how when maximally set it would compare to other programs designed for recording music. I use it mainly to regularly schedule and record several shows some of which I put in from the options offered and a couple I entered manually. I am pleased with being able to start the program minimize it, and know that the programs will be captured when they come on and I can hear them at my leisure. I am not fond of the player part of the program and tend to listen to shows in winamp. Write if I can be of any help or just for moral support. I will admit that though I have no trouble with the program, others I have seen on the lists seem to. I suspect this is in part because more authoritative list members push other products which which they are most comfortable. I want to suggest replay-radio as another option for recording streams. It records other things, but its primary function is to allow for the scheduling and recording of streams from the internet and in addition to adding something new or recording something one stumbles across on the net, one can manually input a show, url, and times or choose a station from the long list already predefined and choose a time, or choose a show from the user provided list in which case the station, times, and whether it is daily, weekly, and the like will already be filled in. You can, of course, change any of the provided data. is it possible that you are using a receiver where the tape output is designed to be used as a monitor such that what comes out is then run back through the receiver? If so, turn off the monitor function and it should work well. The tape should still output to the computer without the feedback going back to the receiver. Just a possibility. I had a computer with what claimed to be the crystal sound board the three jacks were vertical, all one eighths jacks. The top was speaker or earphones, the second was line in, and the third or bottom was microphone. If yours is set up vertically, I'd try them out. If you try the speaker first, it shouldn't hurt anything if you get the wrong one. Once that one is identified, you can test the remaining two. Danielle, replay radio is designed to be a recorder for streaming audio with emphasis on streaming radio on the net. I will, however, also record from cds, mike, and most of your other input devices. I do not know how well it works with any of these because I have only used it for streaming audio. all of the buttons require use of the spacebar rather than the enter key. It lacks fancy editing features, but it records at several levels of MP3, wav, and perhaps another that I don't remember at the moment. It also includes a player although I prefer to move my recordings and read them later with winamp. Both total recorder and replay-radio have options which claim to allow recording without also recording the other sounds going through the sound card. In total recording, I believe one has to use the record from software rather than record from sound card setting. In replay-radio, one has to use the enhanced soundcard driver. Replay radio is one of the programs that allows one to record streams from the internet for later listening. ONe can schedule it by radio show, station stream and the program will be recorded and stored in wav or levels of mp3. It can be used to record from other sources, but on line streams if its major strength. The site did not seem down when last checked. Bobcat, you might try using the replay radio driver. It is reached in the same way you access your usual sound card driver under volume, advanced properties, or at least I think it is. Under my options I have the two or three things listed most of which I can't recall and didn't recognize back when I last looked. One was the replay radio driver which appearred under properties for gboth the record and the play modes. I think it is recommended onlyh if the recordings aren't working. You might try it and see if it helps. Hi, it would appear they have not updated the entry screen on the demo. It is a print screen initially. When it comes up, there are three choices: register, purchase and demo if I remember right. I managed the demo by routing the mouse to the cursor once the program opened and using the shift control numpad arrows to move by pixels, I moved roughly 3 down and 5 to the right. I then clicked. If nothing happened after a few seconds, I moved either down or to the right a step further. When you hit the magic spot, it says something like desktop then replay radio then manage shows or something similar. From then on it is quite accessible. I wrote and complained that for such a usable program, they had an unusable initial screen. They said they like the suggestions and would make the fix. Truth is, after you register which is easiest with a set of eyes around, the problematic screen disappears never to return which is why I didn't check to see what changes have actually been made in the intro screen. Once registered, it is quite usable. Anyway, that is how I managed to get the demo started after getting visual assistance once so I know what I was dealing with. After that, it has worked well for me and I have been quite pleased. If you are moving up from replay 4.x to 5.0, the registration should be automatic or it was for me. If in your case this is not happening, it may be that your 4.0 version was purchased prior to April 15. Contact support for help in that case. If you have typed in your registration, I think there is a place to click which may require someone's eyes. I pointed this out previously and they changed the entry screens in response, but the changes may not have been fully implemented. They are quite responsive to suggestions so feel free to offer improvements. I would warn you that the recordings end up in a new directory and the screen for setting up a recording has been changed. It is now set in five tabs one can arrow through them and when one is selected, tab through it if you have items to fill in or defaults you want changed. In some ways it is a better set up but came as a bit of a surprise. Terri, this problem is usually a function of the tape recorder. You might get some improvement if you clean the heads of both the playback and record heads of the machine. A cotton swab with denatured alcohol is best for this unless you have special head cleaner stuff. Also, if you should have a head demagnetizer, you might try that as well. The recording machine assuming it has both the play and record decks probably doesn't allow you to adjust the recording volume. If it did, you might have more options for getting more volume out of the tape. You will need a program to capture streams. There are several out there including replay radio, total recorder, and something with a name like recall pro. Each cost a small amount for a fully functioning program. You use the program with the speech provided by your screen reader. There is an add-on that I believe allows you to skip comercials when playing back the recording. I have no experience with it so can't say whether or how well it works. Since the files are mp3, mine are read by win-amp and I right arrow through comercials.
