Winamp start pause and stop

2017-08-12 Thread Howard Traxler
Every time I have installed Winamp, it wants to default to fading in and out
when a file starts, stops, and pause/restart. I would like to make it start
and stop abruptly. I think it has to do with a plug-in. Can anyone explain
what I should do to achieve this action? Thank you very much.

Subject: A Couple of Digital Recorder Questions

All,

I have a couple of questions about recording with a digital voice
recorder. I have an older Olympus DM-4 that is still in good
condition. I have an iPhone 7 as well, but can probably not afford a
really good external mic for it.

I recently obtained a very good sound pair of in-ear, wired binaural
mics from Andrea electronics. These mics have great sound quality. The
only issue is that I can't use them while I'm walking anywhere, since
the have to go in my ears. Likewise for recording things like classes,
because it will look as though I'm not paying attention to anything.
Are there any creative solutions to use these mics without necessarily
always having them in my ears?

If not, then I can still use my recorder with its internal microphones
which also sound pretty good. The issue is that the recorder has
intense handling noise, so I can't move the recorder around at all
once it begins recording. I've looked for a carrying case, but all of
them seem to be such that they cover up the controls when the recorder
is inside. I've attempted recording with the recorder in a front shirt
pocket, but then I just get the noise of the cloth rubbing against the
recorder itself.

I'm at a loss at this point. I have very good equipment but am having
trouble getting the results I want because of this.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

I was looking for a small Windows program for raising the volume of some
of my OTR MP3 files that were barely audible.

Came across the following:
www.mp3volumer.com

This program does a great job at doing exactly what I wanted. In addition,
it allows you to encode the audio file into another format. Completely
accessible to JAWS.

Very very fast!
You can also batch process an entire folder too.

Thought I would share this find with the group.

Have a good day!

Something to try thanx quintin.

This sub has a very thick wooden cabinet especially to keep all unnecessary
vibrations out. The only place you seem to be able to feel the bass really
is if you place your fingers gently on the front.

Someone once said you might try holding a balloon wich should pick up the
vibrations. But I'm wondering if different kinds of materials might give
you different kinds of detail. I don't know even where to begin researching
this!!

Hi Andre

Is there a possibility that you could maybe make your sub stand against the
chair in which you sit when listening to music? This way, maybe, the sub
could transfer some of it's bass through the chair or bank, through which
you could maybe feel it? Maybe this is stupid, i don't know.

Hi all

I sincerely hope this is not off topic for the list. If so the moderators
must please let me know and I will request people to answer me off list.

I have a very unique situation here. I have just had a second cochlear
implant which resulted in my losing all frequencies below about 100 hz.
This as many of you know results in you losing quite a deal of the lower
bass sounds in music.

I'm researching some way of now compensating for this. The only way I can
think up is to use my tactile sense to feel the missing frequencies. Maybe
the brain may put the signals of the audio and visual cortex together and
create some kind of a whole.

What I have done is to lightly rest my fingers onto the front of my
reasonable quality sub whoofer. It is then indeed possible to do this. But
it's really not the most comfortable position to sit in also. Another thing
- if you turn up the bass too much, the harmonics starts to distort the
cochlear implants.

So I'm wondering if someone has any thoughts on this rather unique challenge
to share?

Regards

Andre

recording off of a USB device

2015-01-16 Thread Howard Traxler
Speaking of the USB record player or turntable, it seems that all I've seen
advertised have ceramic cartrages. Does anyone know of one that has a magnetic
cartrage? Thus far, I've been using my old, old stereo with its tape output
jacks connected to the soundcard input of the recording computer running
goldwave for recording. For me, that might be the best choice; so I don't have
to purchase any more hardware. This system allows me to convert vinyl,
cassettes, and open reel. Of course, all these analog devices introduce extra
hum and hiss; but to my seventy year old ears, it sounds pretty good.

 1. F11 to get to control properties.
 2. then control tab until you get to the device tab.
 3. tab through to see whatever it is that you are after selecting and
recording from (keep in mind, you will need to have the device you are
interested in recording from, plugged in).

Also note that you have to renew the connection after an hour.

The last time I used Hotspot shield I couldn't access the list of countries

I'm talking about the free Hotspot Shield of course and not the paid one.

I'm sorry to hear that you're unable to use Witopia due to your

have to say that Witopia is about as good as I've found that you can get,
24/7 live tech support, extensive tutorials and guides on setting up your

pay around $60 a year I think it is, there's a cheaper account for $35 a

Hello.

Surprised this doesn't seem to have been brought up already but the thread
is long and there are loads of messages so I might have missed it. I am
going to guess that the reason this no longer works is that the gracenet
database is no longer available to the programme. I believe a license fee
had to be paid to use the service in the first place, and while I could be
wrong about that, the database did change ownership recently, and both
Winamp and CDex no longer have access to it. WInamp is no longer being
updated as I'm sure everyone knows, and I don't think much is being done
with Cdex either. So it's likely that, unless another solution presents
itself, you will just have to manually input your track information, or use
 a different programme.

 Subject: Tecsun PL660 Radio

Was a busy day yesterday what with computers coming back from hospital,
DM4 recorders turning up and the arrival of the Tecsun PL660 radio which
I honestly didn't expect here until Thursday but not complaining
 nevertheless.

I'll give more details on the radio in the future, here are some initial
 impressions to wet your appetite.

The PL660 is somewhat smaller than the PL880 and doesn't have the nice
sounding speaker of the PL880 but it does have excellent short wave
reception capabilities which are - in my view - the main selling point
 of this radio.

The Sync Detection works very well indeed, possibly the best SDS I've
heard from a radio of this size, as good as the Synchronous Detection
System found on the Sony 2010, 2001D or ICF-SW77.

The AM broadcast band is nothing special, radio exhibits quite a bit of
 noise here.

 FM is dead hot!

SSB reception is disappointing, Tecsun use a clarifier adjustment which
fees rough to adjust and even worse, the clarifier control has a detent
point in the middle of its travel, similar to what you'd find with a
balance control for an amplifier, absolutely crazy.

The PL660 is the first radio I've used with an Air Band though as yet
I've found nothing up there, will take the radio outside as its a nice
sunny day and do further experimentation.

Haven't played with the memory system yet.

Like the layout of the buttons and the various shapes in the buttons,
round, square, rectangular, big and small, makes for instant recognition
 for important functions.

The buttons are slightly indented into the front of the unit, almost
flush one could say and that means that they're not likely to be
 knocked.

Unlike the PL880, the PL660 runs on 4 AA size batteries which can either
be rechargeable or alkaline types, the radio automatically detects the
 type being used.

Re: Soundbars

2014-05-10 Thread Howard Traxler
How does one get the audio from the TV into any other device. My TV (a
probably 25-year-old Zenith) has inputs for left, right, and video. It has no
outputs at all. All you get is the little internal speakers that are (maybe)
24 inches apart. I also have another set (off brand) that I bought about 14
years ago to catch girls. It has no connections, in or out.

Why yes music does sound epic on a surround sound system. That's one of the

cool how since it splits the audio among the 5 speakers, you get a lot more
detail. I played Tik Tok on it.

I agree with pretty much everything that Walter has written below, Soundbars
are a very convenient option, to illustrate the point let's take my
situation where I'm using a room with a small TV, I have a surround-sound
system in the lounge but don't want that in my Den, I just want something I
can use with my Television.

Using a Soundbar would mean very little set-up on my part to enjoy the
experience of Surround-Sound in a movie or from Channels on my Set Top Box
etc, no need to set-up individual speakers as I did in the lounge and so on.

It should be noted that - whatever system you used with your Television
these days - would improve the sound quality of your TV, the speakers in
those TV sets now are even worse than 2 tins, 1 on each end of a piece of
string.

There are several reasons for the bad audio quality, the most obvious being
that Television sets these days are getting to the point of being as thick
as a piece of cardboard thus good sound would really be defying the laws of
physics.

If you have your hi-fi in your living room where you have the TV then
feeding the TV through the Hi-fi will greatly improve the sound quality.
 I
think it should be noted here that Soundbars are designed to give a

music seriously then a good hi-fi is the better option. If though it
is to use with your TV or DVD then a soundbar is a good investment.
If you are going to spend a lot of money then you would be wise to
audition the soundbar first by visiting a reputable dealer. There are
soundbars to suit every pocket the sound quality will generally match
 the price. Walter.

Hi Dane. I would recommend strongly the Bose Cinemate SR1. This
Soundbar is extraordinary. The technology it contains inside is
remarkable. When it is set up you get a little confused for a moment
or two because you hear sounds coming from parts of the room where you
know there are no speakers but that is how it works by bouncing sounds
off walls and ceiling and it acts just like a surround sound system.
The set up procedure is all automated and you are talked through it.
It comes with a large subwoofer and it is a really high quality sound.
The sound bar can be placed on the wall, or it can sit on the table in
front of the TV. This positioning has no ill effect on sound quality
due to the technology inside, it adjusts to its position. The
Soundbar though isn't cheap but you truly get what you pay for. It

Re: USB input device

2013-06-15 Thread Howard Traxler
Thanks, Robert, for the suggestion.

I've been looking at the 302 and 502; the price ain't much different. Judging
from the Amazon description, it sounds like there's one combination XLR and
quarter inch connector and a pair of RCA jacks. Sounds to me like it does not
have stereo mic plugs. It says either three or five inputs. Does that mean
channels? Or do they all feed into one channel. Nothing is mentioned about
input or output level controls.

Sure wish I could go down to the store and check it out. Thought if I find the
manual I could learn a lot more; but can't seem to find one to download--or to
do anything else with. All my experience is back in the 60's when it was all
analog. Do you know a little more about these things that you could pass
along? Thank you a lot. Sure appreciate your help.

Re: Recording level in Goldwave

2013-05-12 Thread Howard Traxler
Roger, the setup is the hardest part--at least it has been for me.

Once GoldWave is set up and ready to go, press Control+n for new file, make the
correct choices from the dialog box that comes up. Press control+F9 to start
recording, then start your source material. When the playing has finished,
press control+F8 to stop recording. Then do control+s to save your work.
Choose the name, file type, and where to put it from the save as dialog box.

When I'm ripping cassettes or vinyl, I usually want to manually split the file
into separate tracks later on. So, while recording, I press control+q between
tracks to drop a Q point. Then, when finished, I split the file using
GoldWave's tools | q points dialog.

The way I do it is certainly not the only way--maybe not even the best way, but
it gets the job done. If you need more than this, I'll put together a step by
stpep instruction. It'll make me feel like I'm back teaching again. In my
working days, I created all kinds of these sets of instructions..

Good luck.

 Hi Howard

I’ve been putting my CD collection onto an external hard drive using CDEx
and found a set I bought that is heavily protected and will not allow this.
The discs will play in a non-pc CD player but not on any computer player,
so the intention is to hook a CD player up to the PC sound card and add the
CD's to the hard drive that way as we did when transferring the cassette
and vinyl collections. I used Magic Audio Lab for this then but no longer
have that software, even if I did it may not be compatible with Win 7 anyway
so the intention was to use Goldwave. Except I don’t know how, seeing your

it is to be done, please.

really understanding the measure of level in decabels, I just make them all

I'm wondering if there's a way that I can tell earlier in the process if I

GoldWave. The volume level of the resulting files vary by quite a bit. I
can't get an idea of just how much until I finish editing and convert them to
mp3 files. I then use MP3Gain to get them to the level I want. Not really
understanding the measure of level in decabels, I just make them all 94 which
sounds ok to me and is close to how loud my JAWS with Eloquence talks.

I'm wondering if there's a way that I can tell earlier in the process if I need
to raise or lower the recording level in GoldWave?

Any suggestions? Thank you.

Equalizing an Existing mp3 File

2013-05-02 Thread Howard Traxler
I have just ripped some old, old open reel recordings to mp3 files. Some of
the stuff would like less bass and/or more highs. I'm mainly using GoldWave
for my editing.

Question: Is there a way to change the Equalization of a file like you can
change the volume using MP3Gain? I know I'll never get rid of the distortion
but the stuff could sound better than it does.

Thanks.

Re: Help finding the Voice guidence option on a DM-520

2013-04-17 Thread Howard Traxler
It's in the display and sound menu, the sixth choice; once in the display and
sound menu, go down 5 times to voice guidance setting, press button to go in
and button again to choose on and off setting. Then up or down to on and off,
then button to execute it.

Hi. Can any one here please remind me where the option to turn Voice Gidence
on on a DM-520? The menus are a bit different then on the DM-420. On that
one I know it's under the device menu I think, but I don't know how to set
it up on the 520. I tried to upload the speech files from the software and
still nothing and it didn't do it. Were there 2 versions of the 520? My
nephew said there wasn't an option to turn the gidence on. So he says
anyways. I can't remember where it is and I know it should have one. Note
too, this is a refirvished unit from Amazon.

 If possible?
 Using Winamp to do recording.

Hi all, trying my question here as well as another list. Hope that's OK.

Sorry I haven't paid attension to the Hope discussions before now, but I have

I downloaded and installed the Hope software. When I start it in demo mode and
input all the info to register with pandora, I get the message
Registration failed. Please retry with a different set of credentials.
What is one to do about this? I am assuming they want real information.

Thank you, anybody.

Re: Winamp MIDI Files?

2013-01-07 Thread Howard Traxler
Thanks Larry. There is no setting for midi in my volume control. I did get
it to play after digging around in the sounds and audio section of the
control panel. I don't know which setting I changed, but now it plays. Now,
only a minor annoyance, midi file start playing at a lowered volume. The up
arrow brings it back up. This does not happen on mp3 files. I also changed
winamp's plug-in to nulsoft direct sound output which still lets it play. I
found that the fading on pause and seek, which was what I didn't like about
the plug-in, could be turned off in the plug-in configuration.

Now I'm happy again. Thanks to all who helped.

Good morning Larry and Listers.

You may or may not know that Winap enables you to time jump the playback
cursor to a specific time point. If you type CTRL+J you will be prompted
to
enter a time. For example, if you want to jump the cursor to 22 minutes
and
35 seconds you would type 22:35 and press Enter. IF you want to jump to
the
2 hour 28 minute mark you would type 148:00. This is because Winamp
appears
to operate in minutes recognition mode as opposed to the hh/mm/ss
format.

Alternatively, Winamp also enables time markers to be defined and to
move

from one specified time marker to another, very analogous to setting
bookmarks in a digital book audio file. To set a time kmarker you would
type
m, and to go to a preset time marker type alt+shift+M. I hope this
helps.

Best regards,
Rob Tabor

Sure it will. If you can record through a mic using a mic jack, you can
get a cord with a resistor in it from radio shack and use that. You can,
if I remember right, specify the quality of mp3 the machine generates.
You would at worst have to figure a way to cut the tape files into
segments. The real question is should you do this at all. If they're
personal tapes, go for it. But commercial tapes usually don't hold up
well. You have heard the tapes and know what condition they're in, of
course. My wife's commercial tapes were so bad after years that there was
no way I could tune the recorder to get the best sound because there was
no best sound. Personal tapes usually have better quality.

Good luck.
Btw, make sure it's a stereo cable if the recordings are stereo.
Good luck.

Hi Evan, Does your girl friend have a Plextalk? If yes, she can hook it
up to a cassette player, with a patch cord and record the casette to the
flash card of the Plextalk. Then tell the Plextalk to convert that Daisy
recording to CDDA format and it will record this onto a blank disk. She
can then put this disk in her computer and import it. Although the music
will now be on the computer, she will need to find it and rename each
track, which will just be listed as Track 1 and so on.

13 and a Windows 7 machine. Also, if possible, the software should be
as

unintimidating as possible for her.

Anyone got any ideas that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Thanks much.

REAPER

2012-11-23 Thread Howard Traxler
Any one know if there's a tutorial out there for REAPER? I'd like to try it

Thanks for any info.

Hello Samuel and list.

In partial answer to your question there is a sound editor called Reaper
which has several free VST (virtual instruments and effects) plugins
available for download, convolution reverb being one of them. I will
forewarn you, however, that Reaper is very sophisticated with a boatload
of

features and audio effects and has a rather steep learning curve. If you
want to produce convolution reverb without using an audio editing package,
I

have no other solutions to suggest at this time. I wish you the best with
your project.
Best regards,
Rob Tabor KS/USA

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone knows of an accessible programme

Re: audio when recording from line in?

2012-11-02 Thread Howard Traxler
How about for us who have no line in jack on our laptop, notebook, or
netbook. I have a notebook and a netbook that have only speaker out and mic
in. And the mic in doesn't seem to be stereo. How can I record stereo from
a higher level device-like, maybe, a tape deck or portable radio? I think
they took it away from me.

The monitor function of SF should do this but it doesn't for some reason.
So, your only option is to go into the sound dialog go to the recording
tab,

select the line in, go to its properties, and to the listen tab check the
listen to this device box. Apply, and hit okay. Then hit okay again on the
properties thing.

Re: FM transmitters

2012-10-27 Thread Howard Traxler
I have one of the C Crane transmitters. Without modification, it covers my
house and yard well. My yard is about 125 by 60 or so. Of course, the
higher you can have it, the better coverage you get. I'm told there is an
adjustment under the cover that will raise the output some. It was not
necessary in my case.

Hi all,

I posted the following yesterday, but it hasn't come up on the list, so
perhaps for whatever reason it didn't get through. There
has been mention recently on the list of high end transmitters with
multiple inputs, but I am wanting something very basic which

will just do what I want. My original message follows.

I am looking at getting a small FM transmitter which will transmit the
output from a computer headphone jack to an FM radio

approximately 30 to 40 feet away.

I did a Google search and found the C. Crane FM Transmitter 2 which
appears to do what I want, but I have heard in the past that the
C. Crane transmitters are a little lacking in output power. Does anyone
have one of these units and will it operate effectively

over the required distance.

Alternatively, can anyone suggest an equivalent product which is better.

Thanks,
Barry Chapman

Good evening Hank and list,

A pretty decent and free multi-track sound editor is audacity which can be
downloaded from
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
The program can also be obtained via unintended installation from
www.ninite.com/audacity. It does a pretty good job and has seamless
looping
and is generally effective at noise reduction. Other multi-track editors
are

Reaper and Sonar, with Sonar being the most expensive. Reaper has a fairly
generous trial period and is fully functional during the evaluation phase.

HTH and best regards,

File naming or renaming

2012-09-17 Thread Howard Traxler
I have lots of audio files that have the underscore rather than space in
their filenames. I downloaded a program called bulk rename utility to
change these in batches. Wonder if anyone else is using (or trying to use)
this program? It's not really very intuitive.

Also have alot of files with numbers as filenames. I'd like to find a
utility that will rename the file based upon the ID3 information within it.
Any ideas?

Thanks.

Subject: Question on Shoutcast/WHMSonic

Hello and pardon me for the cross posting,

I have used Icecast2 and Centova for some time, but am now looking at
Shoutcast and the WHMSonic panel, which is much simpler an definitely more
accesible. As most of you know, the great difficulty with Centova is
having

to drag audio files into the playlists.

With WHMSonic you don't have to do that, but I wonder if any of you can
help

me with two things:

First, I haven't found how to show at my webpage the song that is playing
or

the number of listeners. That was simple with Icecast, but must also be
possible with Shoutcast/WHMSonic, because it shows on Tapin Radio. There
mus be either PHP or Java Script code to do it.

The other thing I need is to configure playlists to play at certain
intervals, such as every half hour to identify the station or a promo
every

three or four songs. I don't know if it is possible, and if so, how to do
it.

The website for whmsonic.com has only videos with screen capture, no
written

manual and the FAQs are out of order. I have looked extensively in Google
without luck. If someone has a manual for WHMSonic I would greatly
appreciate it.

Humberto

Equalizer in Winamp

For those who use or are familiar with VLC player, I am looking around to
see if I can do a couple things that I could do in Winamp. VLC has a
terrific sound but one thing I want to do is to be able to play several
songs at once. I use control and down arrow together in my songs list and
hit spacebar to select, just as in winamp, but it chooses one of the songs
and only plays it. In fact, instead of choosing the song my arrow key
happens to be on, it picks another that I have selected, say, above or
below the track I'm actually on. How do I get it to play several songs?
Okay I just did something while writing this. I hit next, and it did play
the next track in my selection, but I want to play my selections one right
after another without having to hit next.

Also where is the equalizer, and I hear it also has a file converter. Are
equalizer and file converter not accessible? This particular computer is
an XP and using Jaws 13, so if anyone knows how to use this player I'd
appreciate help. I really like its sound but doesn't seem real
accessible.

One more question, sorry. Does it have a plug-in like, say, Rock Steady
or Thomas Limiter for Winamp, that regulates VLC's volume. Some tracks
are way loud and others are very soft.Thanks.

Re: BurnAware Free error message

2012-08-15 Thread Howard Traxler

Thanks, Clifford, for your response.

I have a string of 30 mp3 files that I'm trying to burn onto a CD for the
car. I've done this acouple times before, so I know it can work. Most of
the files seem OK and are added to the burn list. Some, seemingly random,
get the error message. So I have replaced the files that are in error with
other copies of the same recording and it usually is OK. So I'm wondering
what is wrong with the bad files? They play (using winamp) just fine.
Still would like to know what error 15 meant. There's a contact link on the
burnaware website; so maybe that's my next step.

of them give me error 15 and says can't burn. Does anybody know what
error 16 means? On their website they have a list of error codes, but 15
isn't on the list.

Thanks, anyone.

Gordon take a look at the beyer dt 290 broadcast headset. It's $239 from

They won't work directly into your mixer. They're designed to plug either
into a recorder or

Hi, if this mixer has only one mic input, then it's not a mixer.
A mixer should have at least two or more mic inputs and a set of controls
for each channel.

Does it have xlr or phono inputs?.
Who made it?.

Tom, have you ever just edited the bookmarks file? That's how I've been
doing it. The file is called winamp.bm and is located in different
places

depending upon your version of windows. You can find it with the
windows

find function. I edit it with notepad.

In the file, each bookmark has two lines--really strings of characters
because the whole string sometimes doesn't fit on a notepad line. The
first string is the address (URL) of the bookmark; and the second is its
name.

ALWAYS make a backup of the file before you tamper with it.

I guess this doesn't have much to do with pc audio, but: I'd like to ask
for a suggestion. I know a few chords on the guitar and I'm gonna try to
follow the Bill Brown course for beginners. I bought an acoustic big
hollow-body guitar and a rummage sale. It's tough to play because the
strings are pretty far off the fret board. I broke the high E string trying
to tune it; so I'm thinking about getting a set of strings. The question:
What sort of strings should I get? Would nylon be a choice; maybe easier on
the fingers for a beginner? Thoughts, please.

Honestly, that's such a personal thing. I'd go in, and handle them.
There are some really cheap guitars that play like crap, there are some
that are cheap that aren't bad. The worst thing to do is to buy
somethikng that's totally crappy and will be hard to play .. seen it with
acustics.

Do you like the sound of a fender, gypson, etc .. that will be a factor.

I would recommend getting medium gage strings .. but the guitars will
already be strung.

Wish I could be of more help, but a guitar is such a personal thing.

My advice is learn acustic first before electric. Honestly, a classical
guitar is the best because once yhou learn it, you'll find playing a
regular guitar and most of all and electric much easier.

Learn your scales, it's cool to jump in and start learning songs, but you
want that foundation. Too many people never sit there and learn those
different scales, and there4's tons of different fingerings.

I have an early CD player--probably from the early 80's when they started

how many tracks there are on it. I think it's because the hardware is

It's only about 33 dollars American. Ripping is very accessible and it
even looks at titles of tracks while it rips. So far I've ripped 100

something using Windows Media player (I forgot to mention; am using WMP
11 and running Jaws 13) anyhow, when you rip a CD using this player, it
_will not_ let you rip it again until you first remove it from the
library! BTW-can someone tell me the most direct root to get to the
Windows Media library; then to get to what I might want to remove and
delete it?

Many thanks!

CD Ripping

2012-05-20 Thread Howard Traxler

A two-pronged question:

I'm using Windows XP Pro with JAWS 11.

1. I bought Express Rip; a very nice program. But it gets the wrong info
from the Internet for the CD. I don't know how to change where it gets the
info.

2. So I went back to CDex and it gets the right track names and stuff, but
it creates silent files that are about 25% the size that they should be.

Anybody have a suggestion for either program? Preciate it very much.

Replay Capture Suite vs others

2012-03-07 Thread Howard Traxler
I use Total Recorder to capture the Opry.  Most of it's archived recordings;
and that's better than most of the live stuff they do. TR does well; then I
get it into GoldWave to edit.

I had used Replay AV, and still do for some shows I just want before the

SiriusXM again, but there might be a round-about way if I ran XM Tuner on
the machine and recorded it as if it were a localhost link. The big thing I
miss on the weekend is the Oprey that they really cut down how much they
broadcast, but 90 minutes on Friday and Saturday is still better than them
eliminating it altogether.

See, this right here is yet another example of what I meant, what if you
want to access it with WMC, how would you do it? They have a button on
their

remote, and that's the key, their remote. What if you don't want to use a
regular TV? That's where I guess I was the first to go in too deep, and I
guess I caused people to leave. I'm just saying, for those that still
wander, this is the kind of thing that I kind of got a funny feeling might
be too much, but I wasn't sure how far is too far. The guid lines didn't
really talk about that kind of thing.

Windows Media Center records in .wtv format, which is described as
Windows Recorded TV. If all you want to do with the files is to
watch them in Media Center, there shouldn't be any problem. I don't
know if other players support this format.

As soon as I find some TV with audio description, I'll try to record
it. At the moment, I can only get ABC and CBS networks on my tuner,
along with some independent channels. If anyone knows of programs on
ABC or CBS that are described, let me know.

Hi,
If I remember correctly mediacenter records in a format complicated
to be converted into somethink more usefull like mpg or ts, and I
don't know if with mediacenter you can record all the streams
included in the channel like a secondary audio stream.

Also, Media Center comes with Windows, giving us a standard user

He says this software is accessible.

I did something a few years ago, using the software that came with

Whenever you look at any audio CD in Windows Explorer, you will only see
the .cda files. That is why you can't just copy files from
an audio CD to your hard drive. You need to use a CD ripper for that, so
everything up to that point is as expected.

To try to determine why the CD won't play in another CD player, when

Re: wave to MP 3 conversion problem

2011-12-28 Thread Howard Traxler
To update the file in the open window (I think) means it will close the .wav
file and open the .mp3 (or whatever format you are converting to) file.
Further editing would then be done to the new file instead of the old .wav
file.

This is a guess because I've never done it. I just say no and do a
close/open manually.

One must set the file type and location as well as the format (bitrate,
etc.) before hitting the save button. A five hour file will take quite
some time to complete. Then goldwave will ask if you want to update the
sound in the editor to the new file. I always say no and close the

went to itunes.com, clicked on the What is iTunes link and saw the
following:

   Overview

All your digital media, all in one place.
   iTunes Player

Where you organize, listen, watch, and play.
   iTunes Store

The world's #1 music store. And more.
   iTunes Everywhere

On your Mac or PC, iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Apple TV.

Play, buy, and enjoy your music, movies, TV shows, apps, and more.
Everywhere.

I'd suggest going to http://www.apple.com/itunes/what-is/ to check it
out. If you're still interested then you can download the program for
the Mac or Windows and start organizing your music, playlists and
podcasts and visiting the iTunes Store. Obviously, if you're going to
get an iPhone, iPod or iPad then iTunes is what you would use to
synchronize your content between the different devices.

the software can be a little challenging for beginners but there are

I mainly like iTunes I have to admit for the Smart Playlist feature

many times, if a song was added on a particular date and so on.

What HP notebook computer do you have? I don't think I've seen a card
slot in a notebook computer in years. They used to have PCMCIA slots,
which I think were rebranded to PC Card slots at some point, but usually
I think you just see card readers and USB ports on notebook computers
now a days. PCI Express slots are usually available in PC towers, but
unless there's some mini version of PCI Express, I cn't imagine you'd
have access to anything like that in a notebook. I think your best
option will turn out to be a USB sound card. If you're worried about the
availability of USB ports, you can get a powered hub or even a docking
station.

Looking for some high quality desktop speakers to use for listening to
music.

Let me state that movie and game sounds are completely irrelevant to me.
What I am looking for is sound quality for listening to lossless files with
desktop speakers.

I have found 3 recommendations and I was wondering if anyone have any
experience with one or more of them.

The speakers are

M-Audio Studiophile AV 40

Creative gigaworks t40 and

BW mm1

Yes I realize that they are kind of pricy. The BW system is by far the
most expensive but I like the idea of a built-in digital to audio converter.

There are two ways to access content from the Boom:

1. You can connect to Squeezebox.com and access content which is

2. You can download and install the Squeezebox server to your computer

Okay, I've traced a Squeezebox Boom and consequently ordered it so to

Suppose I get help with setting the unit up through the Quick Start

Squeezebox after the wizard has been completed?

I'm thinking of opening the wireless network so that I can make the

Dane:

There are two ways to access content from the Boom:

1. You can connect to Squeezebox.com and access content which is
generated from their site.

2. You can download and install the Squeezebox server to your computer
(either Mac or Pc), in which case, you have the same functionality as
you would using Squeezebox.com plus the fact that you can access the
content on your own harddrive. In short, you can use either their
online server or your own server.

Hope this helps.

Re: Olympus recorders

2010-12-02 Thread Howard Traxler
Supposedly, there is a way to turn off the AVC and manuallly control the
input level. In that case it should work fine. So far, I haven't figured
out how. I did, however, record from the speaker output of my Drake R-4C
ham reeceiver and it wasn't bad. AVC was turned on and the input
sensitivity was as low as it would go. There was some pumping on the
recording, but not bad.

Plugging the mics into the tape deck allows me to control the mics as though
I were recording onto tape. It has individual left and right controls as
well as mic and line mixing--which I won't need. In any case, I control mic
levels by placement rather than setting the level higher on one or the

Re: regarding soundcards and hi-fi's

2010-08-15 Thread Howard Traxler
Of course, when you use an FM transmitter, you don't get the full frequency
range. Doesn't matter to me because I'm old and my high frequencies are
fading. Also depends upon if it's a legal FM transmitter; the upper
frequency limit is 15 KHz. A good hi-fi stereo system will produce 20KHz.
I used to could hear those high harmonics.

Hello John,
Then the suggestion I made to you, is correct.
An FM radio transmitter that is hooked up to the line out jack of your
sound

card, will serve you best.
Even with running long cables, you are looking at a grater resistance.
Which means, you will loose some of the audio signal before it gets from
point a to point b.
The shorter the cable, the lesser the resistance.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.

Only my opinion but you can't go past a sound card or board with a
digital output, if your system has a digital input then connect it to the
digital output of your sound card, you'll notice one huge difference in
doing this than if you were to say connect your computers sound card

Hello Howard,
Yes, you can buy a stereo receiver that has a digital input.
But don't go to places like Wal-Mart and or RadioShack to look for this
kind of a beast, because you won't find it there.

Those receivers are about $1500 and up.
And they are made by companies like Dennon Onkeo Marance and Crell just to

You will find these receivers in specialty high end stereo shops.

whether it be cueing or scrubbing, can changing of rewind and forward speed
done quickly and easily (in goldwave) without going into menus and dialog

Using a turntable, one grabbed the edge of the record and turned it backward
at whatever speed he chose. To be able to do this in an audio editor would

essentially being able to listen in slow rewind or fast forward mode as you

Hi folks!

Its been a while since I've played with Goldwave as I prefer to use
Amadeus Pro on the Mac but it doesn't hurt to have fingers in the
Windows pie smile. Anyway to cut a long story short I was given a job
where noise reduction in parts was required as part of the audio
editing, I can handle this stuff quite easily with Amadeus Pro but as
I'd never given the noise reduction function in Goldwave a go before I
thought that the ideal opportunity was presenting itself.

To be frank I was amazed at the quality of the result I got for a first
try and I'm prepared to stand by the claim I'm about to make and that is
the Noise reduction functions of Goldwave rival those which are part of
more expensive products such as Sound Forge. Furthermore, the sections
in the manual describing how the noise reduction system in Goldwave
works are incredibly well written without boring anyone to sleep so all
one has to do if they want to try the noise reduction function is to
read for a minute or so and the have the basic knowledge required to get
started.

So what's Goldwave worth these days, $59.00 or thereabouts? Damn good
value for money and I'd almost be tempted to say its a Giveaway! when
one also considers its many built-in powerful functions and the fact
that the author has gone out of his way to make this product accessible.

Hello:

The following is an extract taken from the GoldWave manual:

J, K, L Rewinds, plays, and fast forwards respectively. Playback always
starts at the cursor's position.
Shift+J, Shift+K, Shift+L Makes the playback speed slower, normal, and
faster respectively.

Hope this helps.

Re: I need help with the newest goldwave and a new lame incoder.

2010-08-10 Thread Howard Traxler
When you get the error message while you try to convert, one of the buttons
on that page is download. Hit that button and GW goes and gets the encoder
and installs it.

This 5.57 is pretty good. Even took my registration from the old version so
I didn't have to do it manually.

Hi,
I just upgraded from gw 5.25, to 5.57. As I was going to convert to
mp3, I discovered that my lame encoder was not the one needed by this new
version of gw. I am not great with computers, so I need to know where to
get a compatible version of the mp3 encoder, and where I put it when I get
it.

Thanks for your help.
Vinny

Hello Howard,
I don't own a brail display, so I don't have any choice but to use the
speech output of JFW.

Subject: RECORDING FROM YOU TUBE DOT COM

Hello all list members,
Just as the title says, I want to make recordings from YOU TUBE DOT COM.
I'm using Wave Pad to do this.
I have my sound card sat to what you hear.
My question is, how can I do this without JFW talking at the beginning
of the song that I'm recording?

Thinks in advance!
My best regards.
 John.

Re: USB Sound Cards

2010-07-25 Thread Howard Traxler
When you switch the imic to microphone, is the input stereo? That is, can
you plug in a pair of mics or a stereo mic and record in stereo? I find
that my laptop won't record in stereo from its mic jack.  quite a nuisence;
i have to revert to a cassette tape deck.

I don't think the imic has a what you hear option, just the mic or line in
option selectable by a

switch. On Sun, 25 Jul 2010 07:01:51 +1000, Dane Trethowan wrote:

As for the What you hear option I don't remember so perhaps someone else
may

be able to answer that but I'd be very surprised if it Didn't.

I still think that one of the best USB sound devices I've ever used is
the

Imic, plug it in and it works at very reasonable quality.

The device has been updated quite recently and I did read somewhere that
it now

has digital i/o facilities as well as analogue, can anyone confirm this?

I've had my Imic's for 4 years now and they haven't missed a beat, a real
bargain at under $50.00 each. I think Amazon sells them in the U.S.
