RE: Can't do streaming audio with WMP.

2005-10-05 Thread Peter Logue
You've probably got Winamp installed? Here's a little trick I discovered. I
don't know why this works, but it does. Here's what you do.
Get into Winamp preferences, then file types. Now tab to the button that
reads none and hit enter.
Now tab into the list view of file types and select only mp3. OGG and m3u.
to play.
Your file will now launch Windows Media Player and play fine.

Real streams

Is there any way I can listen to real streams using winamp? I know there used
to be TARA, but I've lately tried the new winamp with a dot RAM file and it
won't play. You'd think surely after all this time Wimamp would play real
media streams such as Radio 1 and Radio Scotland? Or is winamp only good for
mp3 and ogg and the like.

Subject: explorer won't permit playing of .pls or .asx files.

Hi. I'm having trouble opening .asx and .pls files from within Internet
explorer. The only option that I receive is to save the file to the desktop,
and explorer doesn't want to recommend that because it claims that the file
is either corrupted or has an incorrect file type. This claim is
questionable, because it prompts me with the same message no matter the
source of either file type. Further, when I save target as and open the
stream in question from the desktop, it works just fine. Given the fact that
I like Internet Explorer about as much as some folks in this group like Real
Player, what I would really like to do is switch to a non-Microsoft browser.
However, since WindowEyes and Jaws only work with IE, it would seem that I'm
stuck with it. So, does anyone have any idea of how I might go about getting
IE to stop vetoing .pls and .asx files?

One other thing, I downloaded Winamp 5.1 the other night and the problem
seemed to start right after that. But if Winamp 5.1 were at fault, why would
that affect .asx files which play in Windows Media? Any thoughts?

RE: gigs, megs, megabytes

2005-08-31 Thread Peter Logue
Just two more mentions. Why would anyone want to store CD Audio or cda files
on their computer. That doesn't make sense. A cda audio file takes up tons of
room compared to an mp3 file. There's no difference to the quality as far as
I can tell. Also, I wouldn't create and store ogg files. You can burn a data
album of mp3's from your computer and play it in many home CD and DVD
players, Sony Discman etc. But you can't burn a data disc of ogg files and do
the same.

How many megs are in a gig, and with 80 gigs, how many CDs can I put on
the hard drive.
at the risk of sounding a bit pedantic, 1 gb is just under 1100 mb. You must
remember that your 80gb drive needs to be formatted before it's ready for
storing data. From personal experience the formatting data in itself could
take up to 5 percent or more of disk space.

How many megs would a CD take up?
That depends on the length of the CD. the average length of a pop or rock
CD is usually around the 60 minutes mark but that could vary hugely with live
recordings. The approximate conversion ratio is 1 mb per minute.

You can do this also, sure! Highlight your music folder, hit the right
windows key and pull down, Play in Media Player. By hitting Control H when
the music starts you will initiate shuffle mode, There you have it.

You can do the same thing in Winamp. Highlight your music folder, hit the

initiate shuffle mode, you will do the same thing as your friend did, only
you'll do it in Winamp.

Howdy,
I have a question.

When I went to my friend's house this weekend, we were listening to music.
What he told me he had done was to run Windows Media, which then took all of
the music in his My Music folder and played it. Now, he had it in a random
setting, so it was absolutely neat to be able to listen to a ton of songs
from different CDs in a random order using Windows Media player.
I'd love to replicate this, but I have no idea how I can get Windows Media
Player to perform this task.
Any ideas or instructions?

Why would you not use cdrw disks for both audio and data. I don't
 understand.
I only buy one type of disk in the store, a carousel or spool or 50
CD's and I burn data and audio disks alike. I've never had any trouble
 with either.
I've never had anyone suggest to me that I need two differenct types
 of CD's.
Now, DVD discs, I understand are for DVD. But audio and data can be
burned on the same type or CD as far as I know.

 Hi Scott,
Although they might work sometimes, it is not recommended to use cdrw
 disks for audio files.
If you try burning the same files to a cdr, and it works consistently,
then you will see why cdrw disks are not reliable for this use.

 Hi Scott.

There's only really a few standard reasons why this wouldn't work:
Thanks for taking the time to answer my post , my answers are after
 yours.
 1. Your CD player does not play rewritable discs - many older
 players can't

No It did play them a couple of weeks ago 2. You burned the disc as
 an
 MP3
disc and your CD player does not support
these discs - many CD players only play audio CD's though there's an
increasing number of modern players that will
I burned this under audio and selected MP3.I can play mp3 files burned
with another program which I deleted.
 3. You burned the disc using packet writing - that is where you copy
and paste the file to the rewritable rather than creating a
compilation and then burning - I've never seen a standard CD player
 that can cope with this
No I did the add files to Disc
 4. You have a faulty disc
Then why will it play on my computer, I erase the files every time..

 Regards.

Hi Sharon.

It's possible that either the CD's you've ripped lately have surface issues
such as finger prints or dirt and this is causing jitter during the rip.
It's also possible that it's your CD-ROM. If you have a second drive may be
worth ripping from there and comparing.

Regards.

Lately, when I play back a ripped cd, I hear more pops and little skips.
There once was a time when this never happened. Would anyone have an idea
as
what may be going on? I use Easy cd-da extractor.

Fun With Your PC Audio.

2005-08-11 Thread Peter Logue
Hi all,
Let me share with you a little of the fun I've been having these past few
days. What I've been doing is opening WinMX and, in the two edit fields, I
have been entering the name, Karaoke, pronounced, Kary oki. When I do this I
get about 4 thousand different types of Karaoke files to down load. These
files are much like mp3 files, only I guess they are larger in size. I
believe they are larger in size because they are video files with the
extension of mpg, not mp3.

Anyway, what these files give you is a video of the artist as he is singing
the song. Lets say you downloaded Frank Sinatra singing New york New York..
The file would open in Windows media player, that's fine because, as I've
said, it's a video, or mpg file. But at the bottom of the screen, because
it's a karaoke file, you will get the words or lyrics to the song. This is
really cool if you start to fool around with it. And here's how you fool
around with it to have fun. These mpg or Kari oki files are broken into two
parts, the left hand speaker, and the right hand speaker. The right hand
speaker contains the vocals or the words to the song, the left speaker
contains the music to the song.
If you bring up your sound volume control, you can turn down the volume to
the words by moving the balance to the left, or bring the words up to the
foreground by moving the balance to the right .
You can now search for the lyrics to that song on the internet and learn them
off by heart. Practise learning the words along with the music on the
downloaded karaoke file by moving the balance to the left or right to bring
up the music and or vocals. Think on how you can now be a hit at your local
pub on karyoki night.
But what a way to have fun with your PC Audio.

Any questions on what I've mentioned?

Hi Scott,
Try this,
Go to my computer and hit enter. Highlight the D drive and select properties.
Do a shift tab to
General tab and right arrow to the auto play tab. I'm hoping you will find a
fix in this section if you take a look around.
There's all kinds of auto play options in here.

Otherwise Scott, there's something else you can try. Get into the CD via
windows explorer, highlight one of the files, which probably has an extension
of cda, that is, C D A. hit the right windows key to open a pull down menu.
Select open with. Now select choose program and hit enter. From the list
provided select Winamp.
This isn't very clear, but you should get the idea as you go along.

Is this too large for a DVD? Any advice would be very appreciated, folks.

Mp3 music on a DVD. Now there's an idea. I imagine if this is possible
 then
you could perhaps contain an artists complete discography on one DVD? I'm
assuming a DVD has more than 1 Gig of space, otherwise you'd just place
 the
discography on a regular CD. Which is fine if you only have a discography
 of
8 albums or so. But if an artists discography amounts to some 15 albums,
 then
a DVD with the space of perhaps 2 Gigs would certtainly be the way to go.
 If
this is the way you went and you placed all of an artists discography on
 one
DVD in mp3 format, could you then play that DVD on a stereo slash mp3
 player?
Hmmm. Now 14 Cat Stevens mp3 albums on one DVD playing all day on one DVD
disc. Man I'd be teasing Buddha in Katmandoo with a chocolate bull at four
 on
a broken morning in room C79 while I waited for the peace train. But is it
really possible to place a 15 album discography on one DVD and play it on
 an
 mp3 player?

have Mono Mix. Stereo Mix, CD Player, Line in and Phone line. Absolutely
nothing close to, 'what you hear'. My question is, given that I don't have

I'm using Windows XP home
