Just a note, As long as the internet data bases get their imformation from the user, they will never be accurate, since not everybody can type, or spell, or read the imformation for that matter. If the data bases were comprised of imformation from the recording industry, it would be more accurate, but probably be a pay-for data base. This isn't generated internally but is information grabed from an internet database. I haven't looked, but if Premier lets you choose what database it uses for finding CD information you may want to see which server they are using and then check to see if there is a better one than what they are using. My guess is that there are people on this list who could point you in the right direction to get the most reliable CDDB server with the most reliable information. Re: CREATING RING TONES
Thanks Mark, I haven't had a chance to check which file format is used, I knew I could handle just about any format, unless the phone, or service used a proprietary format, which I hadn't heard of. smile R Q J - Original Message - From: Mark Faben [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, June 24, 2006 5:20 AM Subject: Re: CREATING RING TONES Hi, I've a nokia 6630 which takes several formats of ring tone, I've made all the one's I use either myself, or have taken them off the internet. It takes several differnt formats but I've found the easiest to use, and the easiest for making my own in, is in Wav format. I use a CD ripping programme, to rip say a whole song of a music CD, then use something like Goldwave or just Windows Sound recorder to edit the song down to the short snippet/section I want for the ring tone. I believe there are programmes out there that would allow you to convert this to other formats, I know Goldwave will convert it to a few including MP3, but its just easier to work with the sound in wav format to begin with, and I think this also helps in reducing loss of sound quality. The phone I have, the Nokia 6630 will only take the ring tones as .Wav files if they are in a certain format; fairly low bit rate/sampling rate, though I wait till I've done all the editing of it before I lower down the sampling rate/bit rate to what the phone will accept. Re: converting a filder filled with windows media files
Hi Randy, I don't hav any .wma files to test this, so I'm working from memorey. I don't know how you are accessing the conversion dialogue, but, you should have plenty of options to choose from in the batch processing dialogue from within the GoldWave application. If it won't let you perform a conversion, then my guess is: 1. you don't have an mp3 encoder installed, or, 2. The files you are trying to convert are protected files, in which a conversion is not possible. In this case you should take Andy's suggestion, and record the files to an mp3 format. Re: Making a play list
The simplest way I have found to make a playlist, if you have WinAmp, justt go to the list of songs, and select the ones you want, and encue them in Winamp. This puts all the necessary imformation in the playlist automatically. Now you can go to the WinAmp folder, and select WinAmp.m3u, copy it place it where you want, and then rename it, leaving the m3u extension. Alternatively, you can just play songs in WinAmp, and it will make a playlist, which you can do with the same as above. Hi Andy, Remember that every connection can create resistance, which can affect your quality. The best setup would be one cable from the soundcard, to the stereo. If however, I burn the tracks onto a cd and play these through my amp, there is a vast quality of sound. Hi Brad, Yes it will! If I want to change a file to something specific, here is what I do. I open the file in GoldWave, and then just choose the save as dialogue, and then save the file with the attributes that I want. Example I may open a .wav file, and then save it as an mp3, at 44.100, 128kbps stereo. Now I have 2 files with the same name, but with different attributes. Re: routing jaws to a second card, need assistance
Yes you can route Jaws to a particular card, by editing the jfw.ini file. There are instructions on the FS website,in the support section. However this isn't the only way to get Jaws to use a different card. It's basically just a matter of telling your other audio applications to use a different card than Jaws does. Re: routing jaws to a second card, need assistance
Hi Brent, Unfortunately, either method may not work on every system. I haven't used the method of editing the jfw.ini file, so I can't really comment on it. I can tell you that I have had success with the following audio applications with 2 soundblaster cards: WinAmp, GoldWave, and RecAllPro I have used other apps in this configuration, but I don't have all of them installed at this time, so I can't tell you which ones they are for sure. Any audio software that allows a choice of output devices to be selected, should work fine with 2 soundcards. You should be able to do this with on-board audio as well, but I haven't had the chance to test this yet. Hi Kiran, If you are not dealing with very large files, you already have a sound editor on your Windows machine. If you are just looking to delete portions of a wav file, Sound Recorder will do this nicely. There is a size limit of about 76mb with sound recorder. If your files are smaller than that then you are in business. You can find it by going to the start menu, then programs, then accessories, then entertainment. Re: Having troulbe burning CD's on d drive
Hi Terri, If you are burning music cd's, it is recommended that you use cdr's, and not cdrw disks. Possible causes for this message are: 1. the disk is in the drive upside down. 2. the disk is corrupt. You can get bad disks even if they are new. 3. If the disk is a cdrw, it may need to be erased, or will not work for this particular use. 4. You may have inserted the disk at an inappropriate timeduring the setup dialogue, and the disk has not been recognized. You will have to experiment with this because this is not always consistent from system to system. If I've missed anything, I'm sure someone else will let me know. smile. Re: Cdex 1.51 questions
Hi Don, I never had any success with version 1.5 on Win98SE. I am however, running it on WinXP home, with no problems. Whether the upgrade is necessary or better, probably depends on what you want to use the program for. I use it only for ripping, on both machines, so the added features didn't impress me. I am still using version 1.2 beta 8 on Win98SE, and it does what I want to do. I have found that programs that do alot don't seem to do them as well as dedicated programs. Re: Restating the Problem
Hi Dana, Well, moving the Windows event sounds probably isn't going to happen, and as far as Real player goes, that's one of the reasons I don't use it. But that solves only part of the problem. Under the scheme you describe, the Windows system sounds are ALSO moved, along with Realplayer's output, to the newly chosen default sound device. As I stated in my original message, it seems there's no way to assign either the system sounds or realplayer's output to any device other than the default device. And,what I want to do is to have each of them assigned to different devices. It would be very easy to accomplish if only realplayer allowed its output to be reassigned, as Winamp does. Re: Need help sorting out a recording issue.
Hi Jamie, Yes that is what I'm saying. Whatever recording software you are using will use your soundcard for it's source. Now, your soundcard has several inputs to choose from. microphone, line-in etc. When you are in the properties of the volume control, selecting your recording devices when you check the microphone, for instance whatever device was checked before becomes unchecked. The Windows volume control, determines what part of the soundcard will be used for the recording source, bvased on your selection. If you have 2 soundcards installed, then you can tell your audio software which card to use for recording, and which to use for playback. I believe that the mono-mix, is similar to the, what you hear, found with soundblaster cards. which simply means, whatever you hear on the speakerws is what will be recorded. Keep in mind, if you are going to use a microphone, and do not want Jaws to be in your recording, you will need to use headphones, so that the microphone will not hear Jaws. I recently purchased a Dell Dimension 3000 computer with an IMAX digital audio card. This is the integrated audio that comes with the computer. I decided to make a test recording with Studio Recorder. I went into volume control, pressed the alt key, and saw that the advanced option was listed but Jaws reported it as not available. Next I went into properties, and selected adjust for recording. A press of the tab key brought me to a list of items including CD, microphone, line in, phones, mono out, and stereo mix. I checked all these items. I selected the appropriate microphone and unplugged my Logitech Pro 4000 web cam since this microphone seems to stay active even when I choose another. After pressing ok in the properties dialog, I came to a series of buttons including mic, CD, line in, etc. I selected microphone and made my recording. When I made my test recording, the mic sounded great. I could just hear my speech synthesizer in the background; it was barely audible. After some experimentation, I found that checking either mono out or stereo mix caused the speech to be recorded just fine, but of course my mic was mute. Choosing the microphone again caused me to be unable to record the sound of Jaws coming through my sound card. As was suggested to me by someone, I tried opening multiple instances of volume control and selecting both the mic and stereo mix, but the selections were changed in both instances of the volume control. I tried lowering my microphone volume to possibly match the level of the speech synthesizer and then normalizing the resulting recording. This did not work either. In addition, I also made sure everything in the playback portion of volume control was unmuted. Is there anything else I can try short of purchasing a new sound card? If this is necessary, we'll explore that option later. Thanks. Hi Jim, Roughly speaking, 1000mb to 1gb, and the available space on your 80gb hard drive is less than 80gb. How many songs will depend on the size of the files, and I personally prefer mp3 over WMA. So you will have to do a little math to see how many songs it will take to fill that disk. Hi Dennis, Simply changing the file extension does not change the file to that format. In order to change the format of the file, some type of converter will need to be used. I imagine if this is possible then you could perhaps contain an artists complete discography on one DVD? I'm assuming a DVD has more than 1 Gig of space, otherwise you'd just place the discography on a regular CD. Which is fine if you only have a discography of 8 albums or so. But if an artists discography amounts to some 15 albums, then a DVD with the space of perhaps 2 Gigs would certtainly be the way to go. If this is the way you went and you placed all of an artists discography on one DVD in mp3 format, could you then play that DVD on a stereo slash mp3 player? Hmmm. Now 14 Cat Stevens mp3 albums on one DVD playing all day on one DVD disc. Man I'd be teasing Buddha in Katmandoo with a chocolate bull at four on a broken morning in room C79 while I waited for the peace train. Re: On the fly ripping and burning
Hi Daniel, Are you using a cd rom drive, or cdrw drive when you do your ripping? If you use a cdrw drive, the ripping will go much faster. R Q J - Original Message - From: Yardbird [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC-Audio Pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Friday, May 27, 2005 6:36 PM Subject: On the fly ripping and burning Lately, I've been downloading and exploring a number of programs for ripping, burning and copying music. And one thing I've noticed while reading the documentation for these applications. That's that they don't all agree with, who was it, I think Keith, who in the course of describing how to best configure the ripping settings in CDex, said that on the fly ripping was to be avoided in favor of the slower method of writing a file (or image, or whatever is right to say; I've seen it put both ways now). as I understand it, this is so that if there's some sort of flaw in the material being ripped, then the program will catch it and somehow rectify the error prior to writing the track to disk. I think that's the idea, right? Well, in at least one of the programs I've been trying-- I think it's the Easy CD-DA Extractor that everyone's been speaking highly of, the developer himself, in the instructions, recommends the on-the-fly method, explicitly, as he explains how to set everything for optimal ripping quality. A moment ago, I used CDex to rip all the tracks from a CD to disk, and was reminded as I waited, and waited, and waited, just how much extra time the slower method required. I could enjoy having this procedure go faster. What I'd like to know is, just what sorts of errors are supposed to be avoided by using the slower method, and where in the sequence are those errors expected to come from? I mean, if it's in case your CD is faulty in some way, then I'm going to just set it for on the fly. Because I know the condition of most of my music CDs, and have little reason to suspect that CDex is likely to be ripping faulty tracks to disk without my knowing that there's something wrong with that CD. Any advice Any ideas on this? Am I not understanding that it's common in this ripping procedure for CDs to be corrupted or damaged in ways you can't know if you've only been hearing it on your stereo or computer? Or are flaws and errors introduced at some other stage that I don't understand about? Thanks. I'd love to speed the process up. And if anyone can speak to the same idea in relation to *burning* CDs, this, too, would interest me. Thanks, Daniel -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. You will be placed in a dialog box where you can tell CDEX to delete the original wav file or not, by tabbing through this dialog box and using check marks. You can also tell CDEX to normalize the file as it converts it. Keep tabbing past the Convert button and you will be placed in a list of all the wav files in the folder where your ripped files are saved. Only the wav files will be there, including the one you pasted there. Select the ones you want to convert and tab back to the Convert button and press Enter. This will place you in another dialog box where you will be given some information about what's going on. In my case I turn on the JAWS cursor and arrow up through the dialog box and am able to find out exactly what is going on, how much time is left, percentage completed etc. When the conversion is complete you will be placed back in the CDEX main window again. To go back to the converted file simply go back to where the ripped folder and the file will be there but it will be a mp3 file instead of a wav file. If you checked the delete original wav file that file will no longer be there. But if you didn't check that box the original wav file will still be there and if you're satisfied with the mp3 file you can delete the wav file manually. *Note: instead of using the F11 key to start the process you can go to the convert menu and arrow down to the convert from wav to compressed file and press ENTER. Re: question regarding nero burning rom
Hi Marty, Actually, It would be better to expect 650mb for a good burn using a 700mb disk. The reason is because, there is file overhead on the disk. While in Nero, when you come to a button, or other control that you are not sure about, have you tried getting help from Jaws on the particular control? Using F1, or, insert F1. There are four radio buttons, and by default, it is on the second of the four, but do I need to change one of these radio buttons or what? The last of these radio buttons says always, but there's no way to know what the radio buttons actually do. Also, I had a disc that said it had 581 mb on it, so I had some files, and wanted to add them to this disc, but when I got to the burn part, it said I only had 98 megs available, and if my understanding is correct, 581 and 109 is 690, so why did it say I only had 98 megs available when I know I had at least 116 megs available? I'm using window-eyes 5.0, 192 megs of ram windows 98 se, and a 400 megs processor, and the disc still plays fine, but it seems that it should be adding to the over all size of the disc, and not replacing the size only with the newly added files, and this is with nero burning rom version 6303 which I got in December. Thanks in advance for any assistance. The cdr's are tdk, and they should be 700 megs cd's. Re: singing dectalk and soundblaster
Hi Paul, I'm interested in what you have said, about the text assist soundblaster. What characters, and symbols do you need to make it sing? R Q J - Original Message - From: Paul Erkens [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. Pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Friday, February 04, 2005 11:42 AM Subject: singing dectalk and soundblaster Hi, Somewhere in 1996 I used to have windows 95 and a soundblaster 16 soundcard, running a piece of software called text-assist. Text-assist had a text reader, sort of a talking notepad, and you could make it sing using pure text together with a few special symbols to indicate frequency and note durations. That text-assist soundblaster thing sounded almost exactly like the dectalk 4.3, which appears to be a completely different bit of software. On the web, there are numerous songs to download, made by dectalk enthousiasts, that make the dectalk sing wonderful songs. Not only one-liners, but complete songs with lyrics. And even better: not only monophone songs, but multiple voices sounding at once, creating very nice close harmony compositions. Even more: some guys have created dectalk vocals along with background music. What can be achieved with either text-assist or dectalk is impressing. Now I have two questions. First: if I happen to find the floppy containing text assist again, will that software then be able to run on windows xp with a totally different soundcard? I still have one from Creative, but this is the soundplaster extigy and not the sb16 anymore. Any experience with text-assist on a newer operating system than windows 95 for which it was originally made? Second: the dectalk 4.3 software doesn't seem to be available anymore. I now know that it is produced by digital Equipment Corporation, which is, y the way, why the letters D E C are in the word dectalk, but what they currently sell is a much more human-like sounding software synthesizer that cannot sing, which is not what I'm hoping to find because I want to create my own synthetic dectalk songs. Does anyone know how I can obtain a copy of the dectalk software somewhere? Kind regards from Holland, Paul. - Original Message - From: Ann [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. Hi Teri, The 5x versions of GoldWave were written for Win2000, and WinXP, however, they will work on Win98SE. The author of the program is just stating, that using it with Win98SE, is not supported. Re: Eloquence and sound recording was Microphones for the computermicrophones for computer
Hi Bradford, No, Eloquence does not block the mike. If sound recorder is recording Jaws, then you probably have, what you hear, checked in the volume control. That is, if you have a SoundBlaster soundcard. If you have another brand of soundcard, the same control may have a different name, such as, stereo mixer. You should probably check out the volume control settings first. R Q J - Original Message - From: Bradford Trainham [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. Re: Who's using two sound cards?
Hi Howard, Sometimes the file that FS makes available is not necessary. I am running 2 soundcards on a Win98SE machine, and I did not make any changes to Jaws. I can have Jaws use either of the cards, and can do the same with the rest of my audio. Of course, when I finish building my XP machine, it may be a whole different story. Hi, I am using two sound cards; jaws and computer sounds on the integrated card and entertainment stuff on the creative plug-in card. I got it to work twice now but I don't know what I did to make it work. Problem is, when I boot up, jaws talks through the wrong card. So I just restart jaws and all's well. I think my stumbling block was the eloquence driver. The instructions on the FS site said you must get a particular driver to make jaws switch cards. But that driver is smaller and two years older than the one that ships with jaws. So I ignored that instruction. When I finally tried that old driver, I think that's when it started working. Good luck. HT At 10:37 PM 1/27/2005, R Q J wrote: Hi Dale, It will work, and although I'm not running 2 soundcards on my XP machine, I am on my 98SE machine.
