RE: listen to music in surround sound

2014-05-26 Thread Tom Kaufman
Well call me a purest, but I just don't know if that type of thing would do
it for me! If I'm going to listen to OTR, I think I'd prefer to hear it as
I would have heard it on a big ole radio like they had back then! Having
said that, maybe it'd be fun to hear what it would sound like...you know;
just for the fun of it!

Well Tom, one thing I did, I collected old-time radio tapes for several
years during the 80's. I used a graphics equalizer at the time, and I
created a stereo effect by puttinng one voice on the left channel by raising

the left lever, and for the other person, I raised the right lever to give
that effect, and it amazed me when listening to it later, even though I knew

what I had done.

2014-05-26 Thread Tom Kaufman
I must confess that I've never to this day heard surround-sound; in some
ways, I'd like to hear what it sounds like; aw but then I'd probably want it
and it's just not practical in this house! It might be that someday I'll
investigate getting a sound bar for the TV in the living room; that should
help some as it's _got_ to sound better than the sound I get from the TV
now; not that it's absolutely terrible or anything like that; my major
complaint is that the sound tends to make the television vibrate; that's
annoying!

Even so, music for the most part is not recorded to take advantage of the
concert hall effect, even on our classical stations here its just recorded
in plain old fashioned stereo and I ought to know .

Okay...I'll jump in on this; please understand I don't claim to know a whole
lot about it, but if one is listening to music in "surround sound" (and it
wasn't originally produced that way) isn't this a little like trying to
listen to music in stereo that wasn't recorded that way:? Believe me, I've
heard music that was "re-enhanced" for stereo; for the most part, it just
don't get it for me! I love stereo, but all too often, I've heard music
that was, shall we say "re-channeled" (for lack of a better term) to make it
_sound_ like it's in stereo; it just doesn't work!

If you like listening to music through a surround-sound system with a DSP
effect then fine! and you're underlining the point that an audiophile is
making, you're listening to music in a way that wasn't normally intended for

it to be listened to so the argument then goes that - because of the extra
artificial effect applied by the DSP - you're not able to fully appreciate
the purity of the music, quality of the music etc that you would otherwise
experience from a better quality 2 channel system.

There are exceptions to the rule of course and I'm talking here of quad
recordings or SACD etc but again these are not very common and aren't in
mainstream music recordings, you don't see Quad FM nowadays or you don't see

SACD recordings in large numbers at your local record shops.

Hi list,
I’m writing for a friend do have winamp and he uses version 5.07.
Until now it has presented the cd tracks fine, when he inserted a cd in the
drive.
But this functionality has stopped working. Now Jaws only says Artist
unknown, Album unknown and so on.

Any help will be highly apreciated.
He don’t wanna upgrade to the latest version as it has some issues. For
example it recognises all external drives as a portable music player and
wants to add them, which is annoying.

Best regards
Brian

They are working on a new release but it won't be ready until at least the
end of the year. In the meantime Gracenote (who provide the tagging service)
have terminated it without notice as the licence has expired. The new owners
will not be using Gracenote. So no tagging until the end of the year at the
earliest.

As you can imagine there are a lot of unhappy Winamp users out there.

I'm missing something obviously, why would people want to do this? Youtube
videos don't go away, they're just like a link to a radio station or radio
stream in all respects, click on the link as many times as you like to view
as many times as you like, saves a whole heap of time and trouble dont you
reckon? .

Tim,

Go to Windows Explorer with windows key+e. then press alt-v for view and
arrow down through your options. One of them is details, and it needs to be
checked.

That should give you the information you need. When on a file name, press
the say line (JAWS key+8) to hear all the file details.

Subject: getting audio information with jaws

I'm running the latest version of jaws on my computer with windows 7
home premium. When I use winsows explorerand arrow down through my files
list, when I ladn on an audio file such as an mp3 or a wav file, I don't
get any data about the file sizeor duration. Is there any setting I can
change in windows 7 or jaws to give me this information?

2014-05-10 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello Mike and list: That might be just the thing I would need as a lot of
my TV watching is back here in the room where I keep most of my
"stuff"...bud now and then (if I have my satellite dish in use to record
something for later viewing) that's when I'll fire up the Sony in the living
room; is then that I wish I had a little better sounding audio; not that
it's completely terrible! But I wouldn't mind having it better if it's
practical! Mike, what brand is your sound bar?

Hi Tom, Most certainly, a sound bar will help a whole lot.I have a 40
inch television and added a 37 inch sound bar. They offer enough internal
enclosure to give it some of that rich depth the old set had. Remember to
get as wide of a sound bar as your particular installation can allow for
great stereo separation. Its a cheap alternative, and I only paid about $
65 for the sound bar. It was very pleasing when it was set up and I've
never regretted the purchase.

2014-05-10 Thread Tom Kaufman
I'd say (and granted I don't know as much about it as you all do) but I'd
say that the soundbar would work in situations where surround sound just
isn't really practical; let's say maybe the room somehow just doesn't allow
for surround sound for whatever reason! In this case, then the soundbar
would probably work fine!

I'll stick to a true surround sound system thanks. I understand the fact
that sound bars are way better then TV speakers, and hell yeah they are. But
there are 8 channals in a 7.1 Blu-Ray movie, and each one has a set of
sounds. To hear them all you need a true system. Thing is sometimes people
try to sell them to you as if you are getting the full movie experience. Not
so. At the movies you have all 6 speakers if 5.1, or 8 if 7.1.

Hi Dane. I would recommend strongly the Bose Cinemate SR1. This Soundbar
is extraordinary. The technology it contains inside is remarkable. When it
is set up you get a little confused for a moment or two because you hear
sounds coming from parts of the room where you know there are no speakers
but that is how it works by bouncing sounds off walls and ceiling and it
acts just like a surround sound system. The set up procedure is all
automated and you are talked through it. It comes with a large subwoofer
and it is a really high quality sound. The sound bar can be placed on the
wall, or it can sit on the table in front of the TV. This positioning has
no ill effect on sound quality due to the technology inside, it adjusts to
its position. The Soundbar though isn't cheap but you truly get what you
pay for. It isn't large just over a metre wide and about 7 or 8 inches
deep. The Subwoofer is Bluetooth and connects automatically when turned on.
As I said, it isn't cheap, it is £1,300 in the UK, around $2,100 U.S. You
can get cheaper soundbars but they are not so good and the Sonas Soundbar
doesn't come with a subwoofer. You can get much more expensive soundbars
but you have the rear speaker problem but with the SR1 you don't. The SR1
has a big brother but it is nearly double the price but I don't think the
sound quality is any better but you get a number of other benefits but in my
view, none that merits the nearly doubling of the price. It is really worth
your while going and having a listen and judge for yourself. Walter

could give a description of what a soundbar looks like.

I'm getting a bigger Television for the lounge so time to move the smaller
19 inch set I have into the den, I'm thinking about placing this on top of a
soundbar, would be near perfect.

So does the soundbar just sit on the floor, on a shelf, mounted on a wall or
what?

C-QUAM is the method of AM stereo broadcasting used in Canada, the United
States and most other countries. It was invented in 1977
by Norman Parker, Francis Hilbert and Yoshio Sakaie, and published in an
IEEE journal.

Using circuitry developed by Motorola, C-QUAM uses quadrature amplitude
modulation (QAM) to encode the stereo separation signal.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong about any of the following, but the
Pro version costs $20, and as far as I know the only benefits are that you
get unlimited ripping speed and mp3 ripping capability. If there are any
other benefits, I don't know about them.

RE: Stereo AM

2014-04-05 Thread Tom Kaufman
In the 90s. WSM (Nashville, Tennessee) was in AM stereo; we had an AM stereo
system in the car (a Lincoln Town Car) I remember riding home from a gig and
would have the Grand Ole Opry on one night; if the station would come in
just right, the "stereo" would kick in; it sounded great! But my first
experience with hearing AM stereo (again it was with WSM) we had traveled to
Nashville; we had a Lincoln Town Car; I did not realize that the car was
equipped with AM stereo! We had stopped to see about getting rooms (my
father and I stayed in the car and WSM was on the radio. But then I
noticed it was in stereo, so I figured "no; that couldn't be WSM!" So just
to confirm what I thought my ear was telling me, I asked my father to tell
me what station the radio was on! When he said 6500, then I knew and was
totally amazed at how good it sounded!

Back in the 80s when I was visiting my parents in California, there was a

two portable radios. I discovered that if you tuned them just right, you
could get the stereo sound.

Back to the glory days of radio .

Actually we do have one radio station in Australia to my knowledge that does

broadcast in AM Stereo to this day and that's 2CA Canberra, Here's a
recording I found on Youtube of a station in the U.S. though I'm not sure
when the content was actually aired, quite nice audio so - for those who
have never heard stereo AM before - take a moment to enjoy.

You don't have to have the Pro version to rip CDs, but there are some
restrictions. First, you can't rip to mp3, but you can rip to m4a, and some
other formats which I forget because I bought the Pro version a while back.
Second, the free version only lets you rip at 8x, whereas the Pro version
lets you rip at unlimited speed.

2014-03-31 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello List: Am currently trying to rip a CD that I bought the other night
at a concert; am using Windows Media to rip the CD (the CD appears to be
ripping) however it says "pending for all of the tracks and has been a good
while since it has changed! Does this mean that this CD cannot be ripped?
I really am not sure of what is going on here! Am running the latest
version of Jaws 15 with Windows 7; should I stop the rip and start over?
Just would like to know what is taking so long! In older versions of
Windows Media, if it wasn't going to rip, it would just pop the door open
and that was that!

Which operating system are you running? When I had Windows XP, it would
bring up the scheduler, but I could never get it to work! Then when I went
to Windows 7 (then if I tried to go to the scheduler) I was informed at this
point that it was only available with the "pro" version!

Hi Larry,

Yes, I agree, Screamer is great. I think I misunderstood your question a
little because I was wondering if there was a way to record the aac stream
without it being converted which would result in having the original quality
in which the stream was broadcast. I would prefer that to a conversin to mp3
or ogg. But to my knowledge Screamer doesn't do that.

If you want to schedule programs you could try Tapin Radio, which also has a
free version as far as I know. I haven't played around with it much, but the
streams are more up to date and if you add a stream to your favorites you
can schedule the recording. Ought to have a look at it myself again, but
like Screamer so much and haven't got much time to do a lot of experimenting
right now.

Take care,
Alexandra

I'm not sure what you mean, its easy with the latest version. You just
choose the default options in the instal, then it will be fine when
you select software or soundboard. Don't change the software driver
dearing instal as that may confuse you. The latest total recorder is
version 8.5 and the pro is the best ever. Goodluck and feel free to
ask if you get stuck.

I use DVD Shrink; it's old, but rarely fails. Allows you to only
pick parts of the disc (like the main film but miss out the
trailer, for example) and choose things like which subtitle or
audio track/s you want.

ALso, as the name suggests, will if needed compress the video so
it will fit on a standard writable disc.

read that that way sighted people will be able to watch, but if you google
it and read the info it'll tell you if that is correct; thanks.

Hey /Tom,
Do you know where the converted files are supposed to go? When I installed
it, they were set by default to go to the Music folder, and I just left it
that way for the present to test it out. But that's in Windows Vista, that
may be different for different operating systems. But you can check on that
by simply tabbing through the buttons without even going into any menus.
Maybe it's converting and you just can't find the converted files. What
happens when you tell it to convert something? For me, it tells me what file

it is working on and the percentages every so often. If it does that for
you, then I would say that it's converting something, but you just may need
to check to see where it's putting the files it converts.

Greetings,

Maybe you can tell us a little about your audio experiences? Maybe you
need help? Please come back as there are plenty here with vast experience
who can assist in many areas.

I, for instance, am a keen user of GoldWave, though at present, I am on
WindowsXP Home and my access technology is Jaws, V.10 on this laptop and
V.11 on my desktop, I have GoldWave V5.70 on both which, so far as I am
aware, is still the latest version (at least for my system) maybe there are
later programs capable of working with Windows7 and/or Windows8 of which,
because I am still on XP Home, the update routines have not made me aware.

I have been using GoldWave since 2006 most of the time in it's basic form
this suits me for the areas I use, I do know very well.

Tapin Radio Problem

o'clock (eastern time) I go through and tell it when I want to stop and so
forth; the thing is, when I get to the "create task button, it tells me that
the file exists!  So I though "Okay.I'll go to "delete task button" no soap;
it does nothing upon entering that! This has happened before; consequently,
it doesn't record my event! So what is it I should do to get this thing to
realize that I am scheduling a new event? Am running Windows 7 64 bit (home
premium edition" the latest Jaws 15. Help greatly appreciated! I can
record anything else with apparently no problem; just can't record WSM as it
says "the file exists!"

Tom, if the radio has an earphone jack, as I think you indicated, I would
start there. I would try inserting and extracting the plug several times to

see if one of the contacts that restore sound to the speakers has failed.
If it's not the contacted may be the amplifier chip on that particular
channel that has quit.

Seeing that you have good audio everywhere else, it leaves you with the
radio and the earphone jack.

professional version will do "Batch Conversion" meaning that more than one
file will be converted.

I'm not on my Windows machine at present so can't tell you the exact steps,
from memory I think there's an "Add Folder" button, this adds a folder of
contents to be converted.

If you can't find that then use "Add File", a standard type Browser Window
will pop-up where you can select what you wish to convert.

A list of files for switch to convert will appear in the main Window which
you can refine even further.

RE: Ripping CDs With Windows Media

2013-11-29 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello Steve and list: Well thanks to Steve's instructions, I have ripped the
CD in question using Windows Media! So I'm at least happy in that I was
able to do so! Having said that, I find that it's harder to tell what the
thing is doing; with the Older version of Windows Media (version 11), you
could route the PC cursor to Jaws and kind of get a feel for how the
progress was coming along! Not so with Windows Media 12 and Windows 7; at
least not as far as I can tell! But I will experiment with this further; I
know that there will be times that I will actually _want_ Winamp to play the
CD! So maybe there is a way to have Windows give me the choices whenever I
insert a CD? Don't know if I'll tackle this tonight as I am winding down!
But thanks to Stee as well as others who have responded to my question! I at
least know that I can_ rip a CD with Winamp; oh yes, I need to say that once
you click "now playing" then if you either tab or arrow (I forget now what I
did) but the "start rip" thing does appear, which was what I wanted! When I
first inserted the CD, Winamp kicked in and started playing! Since that
wasn't what I wanted, I simply closed it out and went to Windows Media;
found that "now playing" that Steve told me about, and was on the right
track! Thanks again!

Tom,

I agree with you, but there is a sort of logic to it. If you are playing a
CD, the CD is not what is "Now Playing" because it takes precedence over
your libraries.

What happened is that you chose the WinAmp option to "Autoplay" when you put
in a CD. You can choose what Windows 7 does automatically with all kinds of
media. If you bring up the Start Menu, type
Autoplay into the Edit box and then use the UP and DOWN ARROW to see what
was found. You should see a couple of Autoplay options that will help you.
You should be able to find out what will be done
when a CD is inserted and see that your current choice is Winamp. You can
change that to Windows Media Player, or I think there is an option to have
it ask you what you want done. You should be able to
close WinAmp and open Windows Media Player as well, but you might have to
select Audio CD or something, I have not tried that.

Also, when I just experimented, I could not get the "rip" button to show,
but I think it is because I already ripped the CD I put in and it is getting
too late for me to think clearly.I have ripped a CD within the
past week, though, by turning on "rip CD Automatically" so that is another
option that works. It is in the "Tools" "options" and on the "Rip Music"
tab. I'm curious about the "Rip" button now, though.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Hello Steve and list: I think I saw that "now playing" thing, but it didn't
sound like this was what I wanted! Would be nice if these programs would
say it how they mean it! Before, there was a definite "start rip" button
(or something that clearly indicated that this is what you wanted to do if
you wanted to rip) in case you missed it before, am running Jaws 15 with
Windows Home Premium. When I first put the CD in, it gave me choices; one
of those was "play CD using Winamp. At the time, I wanted to hear the CD,
so this is what I chose; problem is that, now when I put the CD in, it just
brings up Winamp and starts playing! There seems to be no way to get around
it; at least not as far as I can tell! But thanks for your explanation and

Tom,

You can rip them in the version of Windows Media Player that I use, and I
think it is the latest. You can rip from the "Now Playing" window which is
accessed with CONTROL-3, or is probably the window that
has focus if Windows Media Player starts automatically when you put in a CD.
Some screen readers don't read the controls, though. Another approach is to
go to the Tools and Options menu and choose the
rip tab. You can choose which format you want them ripped to there, and you
can also check a box that will rip a cd automatically when you start Windows
Media Player.

Unfortunately, how a lot of this works depends upon your "autoplay" settings
and even your screen reader, but it's worth exploring before you get another
program. If your screen reader doesn't read the
controls on the now playing window, NVDA should work.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

In the Options menu under the "rip music" tab, I'm seeing everything except
for "start rip!" I've found something that says "rip automatically (right
now it is unchecked) I don't believe I want it to rip automatically whenever
I put a CD into the tray! In fact, I might want to (and probably will) use
Winamp to play my CDs on the computer! All I want to do is to have (when I
want to rip) Windows Media to rip a CD for me! But maybe this is not doable
anymore?

Here's the situation:

I brought a PTP-1 to a telethon audition. Because the amplification in the
room was so high, I set the recording volume of the PTP-1 quite low, but
because I was in a hurry, I set it *too low.

When I tried to listen to the recording later, I heard *nothing. In
disbelief, I put the *.wav file on my computer and normalized it to 99
percent.

The result sounds like something Thomas Edison might have recorded on a wax
cylinder - *very noisy with lots of crackle.

I've tried using Adobe Audition V1.5's click and pop functions, but don't
get much satisfaction.

Any suggestions?

I'm with Evan on this one; if it's just a matter of them not putting out new
versions of Winamp; if we can keep using our current versions as we have,
then there's really no problem!

Exactly so. It isn't as though Winamp is just going to go poof on December
20. I will find another player eventually, but I expect to be using Winamp
for a while, maybe quite a while, after the updates stop. The bookmarks will

still work, (they are often the same as those for iTunes anyway), the
Gracenotes service will still work, so I can keep ripping CDs. I'm just
going to keep using it until I get a compelling reason to change, such as a
new PC with an OS that doesn't support it, or some new feature that I just
positively must have.

RE: ITunes Player

2013-11-21 Thread Tom Kaufman
I don't think you understand; while these players may be accessible, will
they allow one to do _all_ the things that Winamp does? Wil they, for
example, start listening to a file; then you have to stop in the middle;
will they let you go in and pick up right where you left off? Windows Media
Player won't; at least as far as I know it won't! Can't speak for some of
the others as I've not tried them! But this is my concern as I want to be
able to start listening to a show and be able to stop it; then go to the
point where I stopped listening later on! If these other players will do
this easily, fine!

So in other words - if Winamp ceases to exist - its much ado about nothing
given there are alternatives out there.

And by the way the software is called iTunes and not iTunes player.

Correction About Total Recorder

2013-11-05 Thread Tom Kaufman
A few minutes ago, I mentioned Total Recorder (that there was a "standard

version; just wanted to be sure I pointed that out in case I inadvertainly
made it sound like the standard version was free (it is not) but as far as I
can tell, it _does_ work for recording streams with Windows 7!

soundforge for line-in and recording from radio on the internet. so,
how could one lot of windows7 have stereo mix, and not another one.
is total recorder a free system. it doesn't matter as i can afford to
buy it if it is one for sale. brian.

strange flash oriented player. I think there should be an alternative like
a standard webpage with standard combo and list boxes that uses the media

it's worth.

Get the free program called Freemake Video Converter. It uses menus and
dialogs and will do what you want.

find it at:

www.freemake.com

Subject: Request from a new member - program to get an mp3 of a
videosoundtrack

Hello all,

Please excuse me if this one has been done to death on the list. I am a new
member and would like to know of a good, preferably free, accessible and
easy-to-use program that will take a video file and extract the audio
content into an MP3 - effectively removing the need for pictures?

Thanks,

Clive
