RE: listen to music in surround sound
Well call me a purest, but I just don't know if that type of thing would do it for me! If I'm going to listen to OTR, I think I'd prefer to hear it as I would have heard it on a big ole radio like they had back then! Having said that, maybe it'd be fun to hear what it would sound like...you know; just for the fun of it! I used a graphics equalizer at the time, and I created a stereo effect by puttinng one voice on the left channel by raising the left lever, and for the other person, I raised the right lever to give that effect, and it amazed me when listening to it later, even though I knew what I had done. - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Monday, May 26, 2014 9:21 PM Subject: Re: listen to music in surround sound That's pretty much the case yes, On 27 May 2014, at 12:10 pm, Tom Kaufman wrote: > Okay...I'll jump in on this; please understand I don't claim to know a > whole > lot about it, but if one is listening to music in "surround sound" (and it > wasn't originally produced that way) isn't this a little like trying to > listen to music in stereo that wasn't recorded that way:? RE: listen to music in surround sound
I must confess that I've never to this day heard surround-sound; in some ways, I'd like to hear what it sounds like; aw but then I'd probably want it and it's just not practical in this house! It might be that someday I'll investigate getting a sound bar for the TV in the living room; that should help some as it's _got_ to sound better than the sound I get from the TV now; not that it's absolutely terrible or anything like that; my major complaint is that the sound tends to make the television vibrate; that's annoying! RE: listen to music in surround sound
Okay...I'll jump in on this; please understand I don't claim to know a whole lot about it, but if one is listening to music in "surround sound" (and it wasn't originally produced that way) isn't this a little like trying to listen to music in stereo that wasn't recorded that way:? Believe me, I've heard music that was "re-enhanced" for stereo; for the most part, it just don't get it for me! RE: Sound bars
Hello Mike and list: That might be just the thing I would need as a lot of my TV watching is back here in the room where I keep most of my "stuff"...bud now and then (if I have my satellite dish in use to record something for later viewing) that's when I'll fire up the Sony in the living room; is then that I wish I had a little better sounding audio; not that it's completely terrible! They offer enough internal enclosure to give it some of that rich depth the old set had. Remember to get as wide of a sound bar as your particular installation can allow for great stereo separation. Its a cheap alternative, and I only paid about $ 65 for the sound bar. It was very pleasing when it was set up and I've never regretted the purchase. I'd say (and granted I don't know as much about it as you all do) but I'd say that the soundbar would work in situations where surround sound just isn't really practical; let's say maybe the room somehow just doesn't allow for surround sound for whatever reason! In this case, then the soundbar would probably work fine! To hear them all you need a true system. Thing is sometimes people try to sell them to you as if you are getting the full movie experience. Not so. Hello Mike and list: Although I've not heard or seen the Soundbar, I would have to say that most anything is an improvement over what the television sets themselves supply you as far as audio is concerned! It's a shame that you can get a great big 41-inch set...and have that audio sound like not much better than a little portable set! Of course I think I know that the idea is; the idea is that the manufactures of these sets want you to go out and hook a stereo sound system (maybe Dolby (or whatever it's called) would be simpler if they'd just go ahead and make the sets sound good; then people wouldn't have to go and buy extra equipment! I have my television back here in the room where I stay a lot going through my stereo. But the Sony 41-inch set currently isn't hooked to anything; I don't really know that it'd be practical to buy a stereo system just for the TV out there...maybe one of those Soundbars would do some justice for it! I don't go to the trouble of turning it on and off. It makes no noise, and only when the television is turned on is an audio signal passed to the sound bar and amplified. Those little speakers inside a flat panel television probably could be made to sound better, but without any depth for an enclosure, they sound very tinny and cheap. The sound bar, even cheap ones help quite a bit. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but even I objected to the television sound quality. - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Friday, May 09, 2014 6:39 PM Subject: Re: Soundbars I'm sure I'm miss-understanding something somewhere in your post, if the Television's turned off then how do you get the sound from it to the Soundbar or don't you bother, do you just use the Soundbar with your smart device. RE: Soundbars
Oh my goodness! While this sounds like a nice-sounding piece, the price tag is a little high (I hve been thinking of doing something to improve the sound for the television in the living room! I've heard of these soundbars before, but have never heard or seen one! Is there one that would do the job that doesn't have quite the price tag as this one you have described? I would recommend strongly the Bose Cinemate SR1. This Soundbar is extraordinary. The technology it contains inside is remarkable. When it is set up you get a little confused for a moment or two because you hear sounds coming from parts of the room where you know there are no speakers but that is how it works by bouncing sounds off walls and ceiling and it acts just like a surround sound system. The set up procedure is all automated and you are talked through it. It comes with a large subwoofer and it is a really high quality sound. The sound bar can be placed on the wall, or it can sit on the table in front of the TV. This positioning has no ill effect on sound quality due to the technology inside, it adjusts to its position. The Soundbar though isn't cheap but you truly get what you pay for. It isn't large just over a metre wide and about 7 or 8 inches deep. The Subwoofer is Bluetooth and connects automatically when turned on. As I said, it isn't cheap, it is £1,300 in the UK, around $2,100 U.S. You can get cheaper soundbars but they are not so good and the Sonas Soundbar doesn't come with a subwoofer. You can get much more expensive soundbars but you have the rear speaker problem but with the SR1 you don't. The SR1 has a big brother but it is nearly double the price but I don't think the sound quality is any better but you get a number of other benefits but in my view, none that merits the nearly doubling of the price. It is really worth your while going and having a listen and judge for yourself. Question About A Program
Hello list: Do any of you know anything about a program called Sony Studio Sound? A good friend of mine uses it; since he went over to Windows 7, he tells me that he can find no way to record anything that is actually on his computer as that "what You Hear" feature is no longer there! I've never ripped CDs with Winamp! But don't you have to have the "pro" version to do this anyway? Gracenotes seems to know almost everything I throw at it, even obscure limited edition electronic music CDs. It's very seldom it doesn't know what a CD is, and I have a lot of stuff from genres that you won't find in mainstream stores. Hello List: Am currently trying to rip a CD that I bought the other night at a concert; am using Windows Media to rip the CD (the CD appears to be ripping) however it says "pending for all of the tracks and has been a good while since it has changed! But that's in Windows Vista, that may be different for different operating systems. But you can check on that by simply tabbing through the buttons without even going into any menus. Maybe it's converting and you just can't find the converted files. What happens when you tell it to convert something? For me, it tells me what file it is working on and the percentages every so often. If it does that for you, then I would say that it's converting something, but you just may need to check to see where it's putting the files it converts. RE: Ripping CDs With Windows Media
Hello Steve and list: Well thanks to Steve's instructions, I have ripped the CD in question using Windows Media! So I'm at least happy in that I was able to do so! Having said that, I find that it's harder to tell what the thing is doing; with the Older version of Windows Media (version 11), you could route the PC cursor to Jaws and kind of get a feel for how the progress was coming along! Not so with Windows Media 12 and Windows 7; at least not as far as I can tell! But I will experiment with this further; I know that there will be times that I will actually _want_ Winamp to play the CD! So maybe there is a way to have Windows give me the choices whenever I insert a CD? Don't know if I'll tackle this tonight as I am winding down! But thanks to Stee as well as others who have responded to my question! I at least know that I can_ rip a CD with Winamp; oh yes, I need to say that once you click "now playing" then if you either tab or arrow (I forget now what I did) but the "start rip" thing does appear, which was what I wanted! When I first inserted the CD, Winamp kicked in and started playing! Since that wasn't what I wanted, I simply closed it out and went to Windows Media; found that "now playing" that Steve told me about, and was on the right track! Thanks again! If you are playing a CD, the CD is not what is "Now Playing" because it takes precedence over your libraries. What happened is that you chose the WinAmp option to "Autoplay" when you put in a CD. You can choose what Windows 7 does automatically with all kinds of media. If you bring up the Start Menu, type Autoplay into the Edit box and then use the UP and DOWN ARROW to see what was found. You should see a couple of Autoplay options that will help you. You should be able to find out what will be done when a CD is inserted and see that your current choice is Winamp. You can change that to Windows Media Player, or I think there is an option to have it ask you what you want done. You should be able to close WinAmp and open Windows Media Player as well, but you might have to select Audio CD or something, I have not tried that. Also, when I just experimented, I could not get the "rip" button to show, but I think it is because I already ripped the CD I put in and it is getting too late for me to think clearly.I have ripped a CD within the past week, though, by turning on "rip CD Automatically" so that is another option that works. It is in the "Tools" "options" and on the "Rip Music" tab. I'm curious about the "Rip" button now, though. Hello Steve and list: I think I saw that "now playing" thing, but it didn't sound like this was what I wanted! Would be nice if these programs would say it how they mean it! Before, there was a definite "start rip" button (or something that clearly indicated that this is what you wanted to do if you wanted to rip) in case you missed it before, am running Jaws 15 with Windows Home Premium. When I first put the CD in, it gave me choices; one of those was "play CD using Winamp. At the time, I wanted to hear the CD, so this is what I chose; problem is that, now when I put the CD in, it just brings up Winamp and starts playing! There seems to be no way to get around it; at least not as far as I can tell! But thanks for your explanation and will try to put your instructions to use! You can rip from the "Now Playing" window which is accessed with CONTROL-3, or is probably the window that has focus if Windows Media Player starts automatically when you put in a CD. Some screen readers don't read the controls, though. Another approach is to go to the Tools and Options menu and choose the rip tab. You can choose which format you want them ripped to there, and you can also check a box that will rip a cd automatically when you start Windows Media Player. Unfortunately, how a lot of this works depends upon your "autoplay" settings and even your screen reader, but it's worth exploring before you get another program. If your screen reader doesn't read the controls on the now playing window, NVDA should work. I'm with Evan on this one; if it's just a matter of them not putting out new versions of Winamp; if we can keep using our current versions as we have, then there's really no problem! It isn't as though Winamp is just going to go poof on December 20. I will find another player eventually, but I expect to be using Winamp for a while, maybe quite a while, after the updates stop. The bookmarks will still work, (they are often the same as those for iTunes anyway), the Gracenotes service will still work, so I can keep ripping CDs. I'm just going to keep using it until I get a compelling reason to change, such as a new PC with an OS that doesn't support it, or some new feature that I just positively must have. RE: ITunes Player
I don't think you understand; while these players may be accessible, will they allow one to do _all_ the things that Winamp does? Wil they, for example, start listening to a file; then you have to stop in the middle; will they let you go in and pick up right where you left off? Windows Media Player won't; at least as far as I know it won't! Can't speak for some of the others as I've not tried them! But this is my concern as I want to be able to start listening to a show and be able to stop it; then go to the point where I stopped listening later on! If these other players will do this easily, fine! Correction About Total Recorder
A few minutes ago, I mentioned Total Recorder (that there was a "standard version) you still do pay for that version, but it's cheaper than the "pro" version; just wanted to be sure I pointed that out in case I inadvertainly made it sound like the standard version was free (it is not) but as far as I can tell, it _does_ work for recording streams with Windows 7!
