Hi Gary. Incase you're interested, you might want to take a look at Premier
Assistive Technologies. They're dedicated in making the most accessible
software for the blind.

Thanks. I just hate to reinforce Ahead's trend toward the crappiest tech.
support I've ever seen as well as their growing lack of interest in
supporting the blindness community.

Gary,
I'd recommend Nero to back up your data files to either CD or DVD. It
has a
verify feature that will check that all has been backed up successfully.

I'd still recommend CDEX for ripping though.

Backup data files.
Btw, Really last question: Will any of these softwares do a file compare
test to check transfer accuracy?
Thanks to all.

 Hi.
Yes, CDEX can rip CD tracks separately (this is the default
behaviour) and it can keep tracks together (which you have to select
from
 a
 menu).
As for CDs, none of the programs you mention will do DVD ripping, to
the best of my knowledge. What would you like to do with DVDs? Rip the
audio, rip the video, copy the disk to a backup or something else
 altogether?

Also, just to make thorroughly certain, can it keep tracks separate as

 Gary,

A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this
 is
 the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:

 *  it's free
 * it's easy to use and fully accessible
 * it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number,
 year

 genre
 * you can rip to MP3, WAV a number of other formats
 * you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number of
 tracks
to be ripped into a single track
 * you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice
versa
 * you can record directly from your line in using CDEX

Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Hi George.

You can download MP3CLIP from
http://www.jfwlite.com/programs.html
and here's a link to the helpful hints
http://www.jfwlite.com/messages/MP3%20Clip.txt
and here's some notes of my own
Using MP3CLIP to split an MP3 file

1.. Start the track you wish to split in Winamp
2.. Pause the track at the point you would like to split the file by
pressing C
  3.. Start MP3CLIP
4.. Tab to the load button and press enter to open the source file
dialogue
5.. Use the combo boxes to locate the MP3 file you wish to split in the
same way you'd locate a document in Microsoft Word for example
6.. Tab to the open button and press enter; the source file is now loaded
7.. You will now be returned back to the main dialogue; tab to the set
button and press enter to open the dialogue
8.. Enter the file name you would like the resulting files to be prefixed
with. For example, if you enter the name Fred then the file before the
split will be called Fred0 and the file following the split will be called
Fred1
9.. Press enter to confirm the file names you chose
10.. You will again be returned back to the main dialogue
11.. Tab to the grab winamp time button and press enter
12.. Now tab until you reach the add time button; press enter to add the
time that's just been grabbed from winamp
13.. Tab to the start button and press enter
14.. Press enter to start the split process
15.. In a few seconds time you will have two files split from the original
file based on the pause you set in winamp

Gary,
A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this is the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:
*  it's free
* it's easy to use and fully accessible
* it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number, year
genre
* you can rip to MP3, WAV a number of other formats
* you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number of tracks
to be ripped into a single track
* you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice versa
* you can record directly from your line in using CDEX
Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Oh shoot, I'm sorry. You're quite right. Brain cramp. You can create a
wave file with CDRWIN and then convert it with something like Gold
 Wave.
This is what I do, and because I do it so often, I fused the procedures
together in my mind. I didn't mean to be confusing.

Hi.
Yes, CDEX can rip CD tracks separately (this is the default
behaviour) and it can keep tracks together (which you have to select from a
menu).
As for CDs, none of the programs you mention will do DVD ripping, to
the best of my knowledge. What would you like to do with DVDs? Rip the
audio, rip the video, copy the disk to a backup or something else
altogether?

Rip the
audio, rip the video, copy the disk to a backup or something else
altogether?

Gary,
A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this is
the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:
*  it's free
* it's easy to use and fully accessible
* it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number, year

genre
* you can rip to MP3, WAV a number of other formats
* you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number of
tracks
to be ripped into a single track
* you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice
versa
* you can record directly from your line in using CDEX
Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Gary,

I'd recommend Nero to back up your data files to either CD or DVD. It has a
verify feature that will check that all has been backed up successfully.

I'd still recommend CDEX for ripping though.

Well, so far, Nero shows as having the worst tech. support, CDRWin and Roxio
answered the most quickly, but Roxio says they have problems with XP's
Service Pack 2. That leaves CDRWin with only two functions I'd like to have
available, but have to figure out other ways to do:
I want to rip all my cds to hard disc and want the tracks labeled from the

Thanks for the continued help.

Oh shoot, I'm sorry. You're quite right. Brain cramp. You can create a
wave file with CDRWIN and then convert it with something like Gold Wave.
This is what I do, and because I do it so often, I fused the procedures
together in my mind. I didn't mean to be confusing.

Hi Gary,
CDRWin can not create mp3 files that's right. But CDRWin does accept mp3
files for the creation of audio CDS. In other words, you can't use CDRWin
to rip audio from a CD straight to mp3 format. However, you can use
existing mp3 files to make an audio CD. Hope that clears things up.

2004-10-27 Thread Harry Bassler
Hi Gary,
Goldwave is good for converting .wav files into MP3 files.
The software called EasyCD Extractor from Poico is excellent for ripping
from cd's;
it searches multiple databases for matches returns you the names audio
for each track.
Most every time I rip a cd with it, it is found on a database shows each
track's title.
It is very Jaws friendly.

Re: Need software

2004-10-27 Thread russell Bourgoin
Hi,
Cdex will do what you want, and so will e z cd extractor from
poikasoft. These programs will rip the tracks from the cd, label them,
convert them to mp3, as well as many other formats, and do all that in a
matter of a few minutes per cd. Cdex is free and e z cd extractor cost
fifty bucks or so.

Roxio, though it can rip cd's, is primarily meant to create cd's
from the files on your computer, and I use it with windows xp sp2 with no
problem whatsoever!

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: Need software

2004-10-27 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Gary,

A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this is the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:

*  it's free

Gary,
A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this is the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:
*  it's free

Well, so far, Nero shows as having the worst tech. support, CDRWin and
Roxio
answered the most quickly, but Roxio says they have problems with XP's
Service Pack 2. That leaves CDRWin with only two functions I'd like to
have
available, but have to figure out other ways to do:
I want to rip all my cds to hard disc and want the tracks labeled from
the
info on a data base, and I need to figure a way to make mp3s from wavs.
Thanks for the continued help.

Oh shoot, I'm sorry. You're quite right. Brain cramp. You can create a
wave file with CDRWIN and then convert it with something like Gold
 Wave.
This is what I do, and because I do it so often, I fused the procedures
together in my mind. I didn't mean to be confusing.

Easy CDDA Extractor, Gold Wave, CDRWIN, possibly CDEX.
