I'm personally more a fan of the VR Stream than the Book Port Plus, even
though, right now I'm using the older generation VR Stream.
It seems like the VR Stream has more navigational options than the
BookPort Plus. Furthermore, it's more sturdily built Than the BP Plus.

Another thing to consider:
Granted, I've not had to have my VR Stream repaired, however. I tried to
get my Bookport plus repaired. I sent it in to hopefully get the USB
port and power port fixed and was told it was possible they could fix
it. I sent APH $50. Then I get a call stating after over a week or so,
that they'd have to send this thing to another country because they
didn't want to try fixing the ports due to there being a rather thin
motherboard. To It wouldn't have been worth it to do that. me, that was
bad business and $50 I could have saved, plus the extra money spent on
sending it to them. Never again.
All that out of the way, The bookPort Plus does record quite nicely in
comparison to the VR Stream older generation. But, I love the more
navigation options in the VR Stream over the BookPort Plus.

Right now it looks like they both do the same thing, but the Victor

Hi,
Just to add some more cool facts to Booksense XT I'll tell you the
following.

1. It's much smaller then the Victor Stream 2, and I mean much smaller.
2. It comes with both a pouch and a nice leather case plus an extentable
strap for placing it around your neck. There is a super nice belt clips, so
you can fixate it to your polo shirt or other cardigan thingy.

It also comes with a nice quick charger and allot of fine connector cables,
for great connectivity.
It even comes with a quick start guide both in braille, and a traditional
written manual for the sighted.

The smaller formfactor, and all the extra equipment that is shipped with
this unit makes me amazed about it. You're really good to go, when it
arrives. NO need for buying other stuff before you're a happy daisy and
music roller.

The new unit just arrived here today.
Wow I just found out one more nice feature.
It's born with 4 gb of space for books and music before you'll need a sd
card for extra storage.
Another cute thing. There is a build in talking clock you can use even if
the unit is turned off.

Pretty handy, when you're reading, and wanna check the current time.

Next week I'll do a public unboxing podcast of the unit, but sadly it's done
in the danish language. :-)

Best regards
Brian

Unfortunetly not, and also, bookport don't support aac plus streams,
wich is the most commin format these days. That caused me to stop
using such player for streaming as all the stations I want to listen
to are in that format now. My provider cant supply me with another
compatible format. I suggested that total recorder also add that
format to their streaming list. But with the new stream, chances that
it will support that format are stronger, since it already support m4a
format, bookport does not. And I doubt it ever will.

Yes, it seems that as far as hardware is concern, hims is not always
doing very wel there. And navigation in a title is not difficult, I
just ment that file organization might be a bit easyer on the stream.
But it will depend on what you willing to cope with and want to learn.
I no of someone who really struggle with the bookport/pocket file
structure. He complain that there is no dedicated boundries for
sepriting different content such as on the other players. But that can
also be delt with. I understand also that there are quite a number of
blootooth adapters one can use to transmit blootooth to players like
the stream who don't have blootooth.

Both the Book Port Plus and new Victor Reader Stream have wireless

Yes, it seems that as far as hardware is concern, hims is not always
doing very wel there. And navigation in a title is not difficult, I
just ment that file organization might be a bit easyer on the stream.
But it will depend on what you willing to cope with and want to learn.
I no of someone who really struggle with the bookport/pocket file
structure. He complain that there is no dedicated boundries for
sepriting different content such as on the other players. But that can
also be delt with. I understand also that there are quite a number of
blootooth adapters one can use to transmit blootooth to players like
the stream who don't have blootooth.

Let me ask one more question.

Is there a service on-line that streams descriptive movies/videos to
either of these players? Don't believe Netflix offers such a service,
but I'm hopeful someone out there does realize that the visually

Ok, so at least now I've narroed my choices down to the Victor
Stream or Book Port Plus. Is there any audio demonstration
available shocasing either of these 2 devices? I'm curious if
they've ever been put in a head-to-head test to see which one faired better?

Right now it looks like they both do the same thing, but the Victor
Stream reader does seem to integrate the player more seemlessly
with various book sharing sites. That's what I really want. Don't
want to have to keep plugging and unplugging my reader to my PC to
upload books to it. I want it to have that ability built directly
in via Wi-fi. Avoids any USb connection issues for sure.

Wish there was a coupon or something available to reduce the price
of both devices. I would just shell out the money for both of them
so I can test them on my own.

Yes, they all nice, but since the guy here have audible as his main
concern, I stil suggest the stream, because with the pocket and
bookport plus you con't add bookmarks in the same fassion if at all in
an audible book, and they support less formats. The booksense support
audible but it can sometimes be confusing for some users as to when
and where wich books will remember wich playback positions. With the
stream its simplified. Each bookshelf have dedicated rules wich also
making organizing of content easier. With bookport plus and alike you
don't have the same amount of control.

But the ability to be able to connect a bluetooth headset and the much
better speed really is a plus for the book sense xt.

And the navigation isn't so difficult as you suggest.
Al.Also the carieing bag optional that fits the Book Sense nicely is a big

Yes, they all nice, but since the guy here have audible as his main
concern, I stil suggest the stream, because with the pocket and
bookport plus you con't add bookmarks in the same fassion if at all in
an audible book, and they support less formats. The booksense support
audible but it can sometimes be confusing for some users as to when
and where wich books will remember wich playback positions. With the
stream its simplified. Each bookshelf have dedicated rules wich also
making organizing of content easier. With bookport plus and alike you
don't have the same amount of control.

And a really nice FM radio, when you wanna check the news on the go.

HI,
Also for the Stream 2? Cool!
I didn't know that. I must ask my vendor, if he has a such. I have a great
bluetooth headset, which can automatically switch from my iPhone to a Book
Sense, and back again.
So when you're in a bus or a train you can both listen to audio books, and
check your messages at the same time with just one headset. The brand is
Jabra.

The Stream now also has support for bookshare with the latest firmware
update.

Ok then on to the final 2 ultimate arguments for Book Sense XT. grin
The weight. The Book Sense xt weighs less then the stream, and also is a bit
smaller.
And a really nice FM radio, when you wanna check the news on the go.

I have a good sound bar with bluetooth, so I can use the Sense for music
playing at a very nice and high quality from the Book Sense XT.
This gives me the freedom of sitting in my sofa controlling the music
playing directly and remotely from the Book Sense with no additional cabling
cludder all over the place.

Both players are good players in my oppinion.

I have all 3 devices. I purchased the New Generation Victor Reader Stream
in July. It hasn't been on the market long enough to judge how well it will
hold up over time.

I've had a Book Port Plus for 3 years and have had no trouble with it.

I purchased the BookSense when it was released 4 years ago. I have had the
same problems with this device as other users. The speaker and Lock Switch
both need replacement. The rattle in the speaker doesn't bother me too much
since I usually use a headset. Intermittent failures of the Lock Switch are
a bigger problem since they render the unit useless until I can persuade it
to unlock. Some day the switch will fail completely, and I will have to
send it off to Texas for repair.

As for the Bluetooth feature, I consider its implementation on the BookSense
XT to be rather poor since you can't control the unit from a headset. I've
also experienced Bluetooth disconnecting from my headset when audio is
paused for a few seconds.

Both the Book Port Plus and new Victor Reader Stream have wireless
capability. Both will be adding the ability to download books directly
without using a computer. This doesn't appear to include Audible books,
however.

All 3 devices play Audible books very well in my experience. I like

Interesting. Can you store the web radio stations in presets? So
instead of having to navigate a bunch of menus to load up your
favorite station, you could simply press a preset button.

I have all 3 devices. I purchased the New Generation Victor
Reader Stream in July. It hasn't been on the market long enough
to judge how well it will hold up over time.

I've had a Book Port Plus for 3 years and have had no trouble with it.

I purchased the BookSense when it was released 4 years ago. I
have had the same problems with this device as other users. The
speaker and Lock Switch both need replacement. The rattle in the
speaker doesn't bother me too much since I usually use a
headset. Intermittent failures of the Lock Switch are a bigger
problem since they render the unit useless until I can persuade it
to unlock. Some day the switch will fail completely, and I will
have to send it off to Texas for repair.

As for the Bluetooth feature, I consider its implementation on the
BookSense XT to be rather poor since you can't control the unit
from a headset. I've also experienced Bluetooth disconnecting
from my headset when audio is paused for a few seconds.

Both the Book Port Plus and new Victor Reader Stream have wireless
capability. Both will be adding the ability to download books
directly without using a computer. This doesn't appear to include
Audible books, however.

All 3 devices play Audible books very well in my experience. I
like navigation a little better on the Book Port Plus and new
Victor Reader Stream with their dedicated navigation keys.

Recommendations for an audio book reader?

2013-09-30 Thread Salien Brown

Hey gang,

Well I'm going to start listening to more audio books. I'm in the
market for the most accessible hardware/software combination for
individuals who are legally blind to do this with no issues?

Maybe there's an accessible device on the market that links directly
to audible.com, so you can download any purchases via Wi-Fi? I want
something that is current, not released like 2 - 5 years ago?

So I'm hoping that someone on this list can give me the info I need
to make a more informed decision? Money is no object for I'm looking
at this as a new hobby which will help me get away from listening to
OTR shows so much.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Iphone 5s is what I would do -- obsoletes many specialized devices, but
you do need a computer to use it efficiently.

If you're in the US, try the advanced book player from NLS. You can't put it
in your pocket, but it has a great speaker, dedicated buttons for moving
around, and it's free. You can get Kindle for your PC for free. iPod touch
or iPhone is also good. They're very versatile, and small. But the crappy
speaker means you may want to use headphones, and the touch screen is not
quite as easy to use as a keyboard or buttons.

Thanks for the suggestions. Well I'm looking for something that's
portable, so I will probably want it to have a headphone jack. My
main concern is it having the ability to play Audible.com audio
books. If I stop at a certain point, the player will leave a bookmark
or some sort of marker to pick up where I left off later on. Also
being able to hold a nice amount of audio books is important too.

This advanced book player from NLS, does it store a lot of audio
books? More importantly, is it easy to save audio books too it? Is
there a website where I can learn more about it?

do other things; if you want to read magazines, then one definitely wants

Re: Recommendations for an audio book reader?

2013-09-30 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

You did mention Audible.com books? Well this is only me speaking, I love my
audible.com books and I've found the best way to play those is through an IOS
device or similar, now I'm relying only on memory here as its 7 years ago since
I owned an iPod Nano 16GB but I think I was even listening to Audible.com books
on that at the time.

No need to have the absolute latest IOS device obviously so you could say look
at something like an iPhone 4 or an iPod Touch 3rd or 4th generation, how much
memory you want is completely up to you but 16GB should be moe than enough.

Just a thought.

I would say that the standard player might be okay if all you ever want to
do is just read a book! But you're right; if you want to skip ahead and
do other things; if you want to read magazines, then one definitely wants
the advanced player!

It has no internal memory. It uses a flash drive. So whatever you can store
on the drive. I don't know how big the drive can be. Best thing to do is
just call your state library for the blind and have them send you one. If
you don't like it, send it back. Like I said, it's free. But make sure you
order the advanced player, not the standard player, otherwise you won't get
most of the important navigation features. I don't even know why they make
the standard player.

Hey gang,

Well I'm going to start listening to more audio books. I'm in the market
for the most accessible hardware/software combination for individuals who

are legally blind to do this with no issues?

Maybe there's an accessible device on the market that links directly to
audible.com, so you can download any purchases via Wi-Fi? I want
something that is current, not released like 2 - 5 years ago?

So I'm hoping that someone on this list can give me the info I need to
make a more informed decision? Money is no object for I'm looking at this

as a new hobby which will help me get away from listening to OTR shows so

much.

Thanks for any suggestions.

RE: Recommendations for an audio book reader?

2013-09-30 Thread Adrian Spratt
Like you, Aidan, I find report of poor quality very strange. For a pure reading
device, I doubt anything beats or even comes close to the Stream. There is some
initial groundwork needed to make the Stream work with Audible, but once it's
done, the book transfer process, control-c for copy and control-v for paste,
couldn't be simpler.

I've never had hardware or USB problems with the Stream, nor has any of several
friends who have one. I did drop one in dishwater while washing dishes, but
that wasn't exactly HumanWare's fault. When I called for tech support, I didn't
hide that fact, and they gave me a decent deal on a replacement. HW's customer
service, which includes the company's CEO, is extremely responsive, including
to customer suggestions for improvements in future software and (now) hardware
upgrades.

The Stream remembers where you left off not only in the current book but also
in every book you start on the device. You can also add bookmarks for passages
you want to return to.

The memory depends on the SD card size. I know the Stream can handle 16-gig
cards, and I believe it can also manage 32-gig ones. Space is not an issue.

I am very sorry to here that, but overall, most users find the
opposite. I doubt such behaveour will happen to a lot of people. Maybe
humanware should investigate?

You can get more info at: www.humanware.com/newstream, and for the
manuals and f a q and other stuff go to: www.humanware.com/support,
then choose the victor stream new generation link from that page and
you will get the rest there. The USB thing is not a commin behaviour.
If you use the supplied cables and charcher you will be fine. The
stream is the most stable among all players, and have the longest
battery life. And the new model can charch on the pc in both the on
 and off state.
