The choice is yours but personally I wouldn't touch the PL660, I
wouldn't buy the PL880, I'd go for the bigger S-8800.

hi!

Well you're going to have to make a few decisions as to which radio
you buy, all Tecsun radio sets have pros and cons.

The Synchronus detection is better on the PL-660 however sideband is
far better on the PL880.

On the PL-880 Sideband can be tuned in steps of 10KHZ which makes
for very accurate recognition of signals whereas with the PL-660 you
have to use a BFO control which drifts and requires fine adjustment,
in other words its the sort of thing one wouldn't expect on a modern
radio of today, something you found on radios 40 years ago.

Even though the PL-660 has the better sync I'd still go and buy the
Tecsun PL-880 or even consider the new Tecsun S-8800.

Both the PL-880 and S-880 have far better sound than the Tecsun PL-660.

The S-8800 has - overall - better sensitivity on all bands than any
other Tecsun radio I've tried.

Sideband on the S-8800 has the same sort of tuning as found on the
PL-880.

Tuning on the S-8800 is silky smooth with that perfect "analogue
tuning"
feel, the S-8800 comes with a handy remote control which controls
most functions.

The manual for the S-8800 is very well written.

About the same on both but again the audio quality of the PL-880 is better.

If you want ultimate FM sensitivity and selectivity in a Tecsun radio
then forget about both these models and go for the new S-8800.

Re: Tecsun PL660 Radio

2014-10-22 Thread Dane Trethowan
No beeps unfortunately.

Also note that the Tecsun PL660 and other radios like it from the same company
are a little qwerty sometimes.

For example if you type 1070 on the keypad when you’re on the Medium Wave or AM
band the radio will take you straight to the typed in frequency with no need of
a press of the enter key.

This however can be different on the Short Wave bands.

For example if you type 2500 to get to 2.5MHZ then you’ll have to press the
enter key after you’ve typed in the frequency, that frequency is out of the
pre-programmed Short Wave bands which can be moved between by using the Short
Wave Band up and down buttons.

There are some keypad shortcuts to be aware of too which makes typing in a
frequency that little bit easier.

On the Short wave band, suppose you want to go to 15MHZ, just type 15 and press
enter.

As I remember the radio has a thousand memories and they’re in pages, they can
be accessed via the page up and down buttons.

There are I think 500 Ramdom Access memories and the rest are divided up
amongst the various bands - FM, Long-Wave, Medium-Wave and Short-Wave along
with Air Band.

Each memory is assigned a number on a page so you can either type in the number
corresponding to the memory position or use the tuning knob to move up and down
memories on a page.

To enter a memory into the radio, tune to the desired frequency and hold down
the memory key to left of the 0 key for 4 seconds.

Hi!

I think there were some list members who had questions regarding the

Re: Tecsun PL660 Radio

2014-06-08 Thread Dane Trethowan
I should also remind those users of the PL-660, if you're using normal/alkaline
batteries - in other words batteries that can't be recharged - then you'll need
to do either of 3 things.

Refrain from using the radio with its power adapter, take the batteries out
when using the power adapter or switch the "Intelligent Charging" function off,
the "Intelligent Charging" function is toggled on and off by first making sure
the PL-660's power is off and then holding down the "Memory/Enter" button - the
key to the left of the 0 - for 3 seconds, you may need sighted assistance to
help you check the status of this.

Course the easiest way round the whole issue is to purchase a set of
rechargeable batteries and test to see if the "Intelligent Charging" function
is off, if the batteries charge then its on obviously .

Trying to charge non-rechargeable batteries will cause leakage and possible
damage to the radio so be careful.

Was a busy day yesterday what with computers coming back from
hospital, DM4 recorders turning up and the arrival of the Tecsun
PL660 radio which I honestly didn't expect here until Thursday but
not complaining nevertheless.

I'll give more details on the radio in the future, here are some
initial impressions to wet your appetite.

The PL660 is somewhat smaller than the PL880 and doesn't have the
nice sounding speaker of the PL880 but it does have excellent short
wave reception capabilities which are - in my view - the main selling
point of this radio.

The Sync Detection works very well indeed, possibly the best SDS I've
heard from a radio of this size, as good as the Synchronous Detection
System found on the Sony 2010, 2001D or ICF-SW77.

The AM broadcast band is nothing special, radio exhibits quite a bit
of noise here.

FM is dead hot!

SSB reception is disappointing, Tecsun use a clarifier adjustment
which fees rough to adjust and even worse, the clarifier control has
a detent point in the middle of its travel, similar to what you'd
find with a balance control for an amplifier, absolutely crazy.

The PL660 is the first radio I've used with an "Air Band" though as
yet I've found nothing up there, will take the radio outside as its a
nice sunny day and do further experimentation.

Haven't played with the memory system yet.

Like the layout of the buttons and the various shapes in the buttons,
round, square, rectangular, big and small, makes for instant
recognition for important functions.

The buttons are slightly indented into the front of the unit, almost
flush one could say and that means that they're not likely to be
knocked.

Unlike the PL880, the PL660 runs on 4 AA size batteries which can
either be rechargeable or alkaline types, the radio automatically
detects the type being used.

If the Long Wave band is enabled the AM button should toggle you between Medium

Was a busy day yesterday what with computers coming back from hospital,
DM4 recorders turning up and the arrival of the Tecsun PL660 radio
which I honestly didn't expect here until Thursday but not complaining
nevertheless.

I'll give more details on the radio in the future, here are some
initial impressions to wet your appetite.

The PL660 is somewhat smaller than the PL880 and doesn't have the nice
sounding speaker of the PL880 but it does have excellent short wave
reception capabilities which are - in my view - the main selling point
of this radio.

The Sync Detection works very well indeed, possibly the best SDS I've
heard from a radio of this size, as good as the Synchronous Detection
System found on the Sony 2010, 2001D or ICF-SW77.

The AM broadcast band is nothing special, radio exhibits quite a bit of
noise here.

FM is dead hot!

SSB reception is disappointing, Tecsun use a clarifier adjustment which
fees rough to adjust and even worse, the clarifier control has a detent
point in the middle of its travel, similar to what you'd find with a
balance control for an amplifier, absolutely crazy.

The PL660 is the first radio I've used with an "Air Band" though as yet
I've found nothing up there, will take the radio outside as its a nice
sunny day and do further experimentation.

Dane, are you going to do a podcast on the 660? I've had my 660 for quite a
while now but can't work it very well yet.

Re: Tecsun PL660 Radio

2014-06-05 Thread Dane Trethowan
How long does it take to charge the batteries? depends on the batteries used
but I'd give them a good 8 to 12 hours at least, this radio doesn't charge
batteries rapidly.

Where's the On/Off Button? With the radio facing you you'll find the Power
button on the top left, its an identifiable rectangular button on its own to
the left of 3 smaller round buttons.

Re: Tecsun PL660 Radio

2014-06-05 Thread Howard

Hi Dane:
just received my Tecsun PL660.
Several questions:

How long does it take to charge up the supplied batteries?
Where is the Power button?
and any other info you can give would be extremely helpful.
I really don't want to fire her up until I have some idea of what I'm
actually doing.

thanks in advance.

I don't know what all the buttons of the radio do but I know most, well
enough to operate the radio well at any rate.

Re: Tecsun PL660 Radio

2014-05-14 Thread Casey

Hi Dane I hope that you are enjoying your new pl 660.
Now when you get the time can you compare the 660 with the 880?
I mena from what you have used of the 660 so far and from you used with
that 8880 so far.

What is or makes the 880 a bit better then the 660 if anything?
Is the f.m and a.m just as good on both or is the 880 a.m A bit better?
Also are f.m and shortwave the same good on both units?
Also from what you said ten the 880 may have better SSB then the 660 does.
So can you tell me where you can get these radios hear in the states?
Are you suggesting then to stay away from the 909x and Bo for either the
660 or the 880?

I would use this radio at home and portable.
So from the 660 and the 880 witch one would you recommended the best for
that?

Thank you and I hope to hear more about these two radios soon.

rough to adjust and even worse, the clarifier control has a detent point in the
middle of its travel, similar to what you'd find with a balance control for an
amplifier, absolutely crazy.

The PL660 is the first radio I've used with an "Air Band" though as yet I've
found nothing up there, will take the radio outside as its a nice sunny day and
do further experimentation.

Haven't played with the memory system yet.

Like the layout of the buttons and the various shapes in the buttons, round,
square, rectangular, big and small, makes for instant recognition for important
functions.

The buttons are slightly indented into the front of the unit, almost flush one
could say and that means that they're not likely to be knocked.

Unlike the PL880, the PL660 runs on 4 AA size batteries which can either be
rechargeable or alkaline types, the radio automatically detects the type being
used.

Tecsun PL660

2014-05-08 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

my Tecsun PL660 radio is on its way and I should have it by this time next week.

The PL660 is a slightly smaller radio then the PL880, it doesn't sound as good
though it does offer more sensitive AM apparently, Short Wave performance is
supposed to be a little better whilst FM is about the same.

Of course the big advantage the Pl880 has over the PL660 is its far better
sounding speaker.

The PL660 features an "Air Band", I've never had a radio with an "Air Band"
before so I'll be interested to see if this will provide any interesting
listening, I don't live all that far away from Melbourne Airport as the crow
flies

Will let the list know how I get on.
