Re: Lost My Windows Sounds Again..But Think I Know The Cause!
have a short cut to total recorder so you can start the program and exit it. What is happening is total recorder has its own sound driver wich you can elect to install or not I think. Also in your audio preferences set your sound card as the prefered device and have your pc use only prefered devices. - Original Message - From: Tom Kaufman tomca...@comcast.net To: PC audio discussion list. Hello Don and list: I brought up Total Recorder and sent a shortcut to the desk top! Guess what? Sounds gone again and what I tried (going to Sounds in control panel and hitting Windows default (at least I think that's what I hit) so far hasn't fixed it! So at least I know what's causing me to lose my sounds (Total Recorder) question is: why has it only started acting this way within the past couple of weeks? What has changed..and how can I get it to stop doing this? I am not convinced that TR _always_ acts this way! Hi, you need to go to total recorder settings, then the general page, then choose to run it from the taskbar, tab and you will get to the check box wich says turn off system sounds and uncheck that, although its good to have it check in most cases, as soon as you close total recorder the sounds come back. You can't prevent this from happening -- just kill the total recorder process (not the scheduler) and go to the sound applet in control panel and you can get your sounds back that way -- I have to do this every time I use total recorder. You can also tell tr to leave system sounds on, but you might get them during the recording. Thanks so much Brad, that sounds like just what I need. I did try it but wasn't successful but will try again. Actually I'm not sure how to select the sounds I want, do I just press spacebar on any of them that I want to highlight them? It didn't say check when I did the spacebar. Re: lost my windows sounds
Bud, Sure no worries here's what to do: 1. Go to your Control Panel, to your Sounds and Audio link, it'll open up to the Volume tab, just right arrow to Sounds tab. 2. Tab over four times and you'll be in a tree list of various events that sounds are assigned . You ought heere Windows Opened. This doesn't mean when Windows is actually opened, it just means the Windows tree list is opened. Other programs like I-Tunes, Quickbooks and etc. will be in this list as well. As you arrow down you'll see things like, Asterisk, close program, critical battery alarm, etc. These are the events you can asign sounds to. 3. Arrow down until you hear Close Program. then tab once and you'll be in a list of sounds to choose from, or you ought be anyway. 4. Arrow down until you see something you might like. If you tab around more you'll find a play/stop button to test the sound. You can try this but I've found if you do this? You'll need to ALT TAB off this Window and back again otherwise it just bonks at you.. no big deal but just so you know in case it does same there. 5. If you like that sound just tab until you get to the OK button and press enter. Then in the main window of the sound tab press the Save As button. Here you can either save it as a new scheme or override an existing one. I don't think it'll let you override the default, I'm not sure but I think it flagged me on that when I tried. Then all you need to do is make sure your newly saved scheme is the one set by looking in the list box by Alt down arrowing and setting it, or if it shows up when you're in that box already its already set to it. Now when you close Control Panel you should hear that sound. Hope this works. Brad On 1/9/2011 12:07 PM Bud Schwab said... Thanks so much Brad, that sounds like just what I need. Re: lost my windows sounds
Bud, I also suppose you tried different sounds with no joy? You used the preview button or what ever it is to make sure you can hear the sounds and there's nothing wrong with the .wav files. Did you try listening to the .wav files directly with WMP or Winamp? Also, when you go into your volume settings, did you double check to make sure that none of the different output sources were at 0% volume or muted? I know I'm tossing out the obvious here, but I don't know what else to try. Re: lost my windows sounds
Bud, Try going into the Sounds And Audio area, I'm assuming you're using XP. Make Windows Default your scheme and then do a Save As. Save it as Bud's Mix or something obvious. Then what I'd do is go in and set it to play a sound for something like closing a program, opening a program, and stuff like that. Then do another Save As. When I did it it did not offer me any choices and I had to type in my custom name again. It'll ask you if you are sure you want to save it as that name, because one is already named that. Press yes and then when you close the Sounds and Audio window or Control Panel you ought hear the close program sound if it worked. This way you ought have the default Windows plus anything you customized while in there. When I was messign around, I lossed sound as well so made my own and its fine now. I can't think of anything I did at the time I lost the sounds as far as downloading or installing any program or anything like that, they just all of a sudden disappeared. Any thoughts would sure be appreciated. I sure miss them. Thanks.. Re: lost my windows sounds
So when you go into Sounds, you're double checking that you've got sounds set up for Windows startup and shutdown, right? If you make any changes, you're saving them and making sure the updated or new sound scheme is the one that's active, right? I assume so, so this is pretty strange. I can play music and I still get the sound when a download has completed. The ones that I know are missing for sure are the sounds when windows shuts down and when it comes on. Also the sound when a piece of hardware is accidentally disconnected and when it comes back on line I did check the scheme and the audio device shows my sound card. It's got me pulling my hair and I don['t really have much to pull these days. Can you still play music? When you go into Start - Control Panel - Sounds, check to make sure that your sound scheme hasn't changed. Ditto for the default Windows audio output device. A few months ago all of a sudden I lost my windows sounds such as the starting and shutting down of windows, and the sound that indicates hardware disconnecting or connecting. I've checked all the volumes and made sure that nothing is muted. If I check the list of sounds they are all there and work My sound card is a S B live and I'm running XP and windoweyes. I can't think of anything I did at the time I lost the sounds as far as downloading or installing any program or anything like that, they just all of a sudden disappeared. lost my windows sounds
Hi Guys and Gals, A strange thing happened a while ago, I lost my windows sounds, you know the one that sounds when windows turns off and when it starts. Plus some others including the sound you get when a piece of hardward is accidentally disconnected and a few others. I have all volumes turned on and nothing muted. If I look at the list of sounds they are all there and set for on. I am using windows, xp 3 and an SB live sound card. This all of a sudden showed up a few months ago and it really baffles me. I sure miss those sounds, anybody have any ideas? Thanks for any info. Bud Schwab W 6 Z Y P Malibu, California To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
Re: lost my windows sounds
That's kind of an odd one but when your in the sounds under control panel and you play the sound does it play? If not press the browse button and locate the sound you need. These are usually found under Windows Multi Media. Once you've reset the sound check it again to make sure it's playing then apply the changes once the sounds are all working and save your scheme. You can give it any name you want such as djc's sounds. Hopefully this will resolve this issue for you. *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 12/13/2010 at 9:04 AM Bud Schwab wrote: Hi Guys and Gals, A strange thing happened a while ago, I lost my windows sounds, you know the one that sounds when windows turns off and when it starts. Re: lost my windows sounds
I assume your screen reader is still pumping out sound. What about your media player? Any trouble with that? I wonder if your default audio output device got changed somehow. Am I reading your message correctly; are you running Windows XP SP3? Do you have an on board sound card in addition to your Soundblaster card? -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com On 12/13/2010 11:13 AM, djc wrote: That's kind of an odd one but when your in the sounds under control panel and you play the sound does it play? Re: lost my windows sounds
Hi Christopher No I don't have any other sound card, just the original sb live and I have that set for the output device. It's kind of baffling.. I do get other sounds like from K1000 and other sources like that. Bud At 09:54 AM 12/13/2010, you wrote: I assume your screen reader is still pumping out sound. What about your media player?
