 G'day All,

I had a mission today. Buy some stop bath for film processing. I know
I don't really need it, but we are water poor here, so in an attempt
to help save water I wanted stop bath.

There aren't many places around town that sell BW chemistry these
days, so I had to drive into the city (I hate having to do that). I
went to a place I've known about for ages but had never been too. They
didn't have any. So I stocked up on other chemistry while I was there:

 http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2991.jpg

Luckily just around the corner is another place that usually has a
good range of papers chemicals. There I found what I wanted:

 http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2988.jpg

Now some may be asking why the interest in film? I just feel like a
change. And I need to refresh my memory. Also my father has expressed
an interest in processing his own BW.

Now while I was at this second store I had a good look around at the
bags tripods, drooled over the Leica M8, Leica M7, Voigtlander
Bessa 2A/3A, Hasselblad H2, Hasselblad X-Pan, Linhof 617 etc, etc,
 etc.

In the corner, to my surprise, was a decent selection of Pentax kit.
 K20D, K200D, FA 50mm, DA* 16-50mm, DA* 50-135mm, DA 21mm, DA 40mm DA
70mm. Uh oh, I was in trouble:

 http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2990.jpg

Last one in stock, demo copy (yay for discount :-). I had been
resisting this lens for some time due to the smallish max. aperture (I
shoot quite a bit of hand held low light stuff) but today my
 resistance was low.

Anyway I got it home fired off a few test shots at the first things
I passed and the way from the car to the house:

 http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2974.jpg
 http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2977.jpg

And something I probably shouldn't have shot, lest I void the warranty:

 http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2986.jpg

 :-)

 Cheers have a good weekend.

No. Less satisfactory high ISO performance in some cameras the result
of noise generated at the time the data is recorded. Camera
processing choices come into play to a significant degree only when

Not quite. The voltages coming out of the CCD/CMOS cells are miniscule.
Improvements have been made by moving various amp circuits onto the
photosites, rather than circuitry sitting on the periphery of the
sensor. It isn't something you can compensate by using better software
processing.

Well yes, obviously.

Indeed. But one of the questions I was asking was really, is the output

Cameras from different manufacturers,, or different models from the same
manufacturer, that use the same sensor can be compared for noise
characteristics, as well as other imaging characteristics as well. The
K10D and the Samsung GX10 which are very closely related and use the
same sensor reportedly handle certain aspects of the sensor output very
differently.

GESO - Portraits of Pride

2008-06-30 Thread frank theriault
This past weekend was Pride Weekend here in Toronto. It used to be
called Gay Pride, but now it's just Pride. So many more than just gay
men and women participate, it just makes sense to call it Pride.

It all culminates with a huge parade, which I usually avoid. The best
pix are to be had on Church Street, a block from the parade, where
most of the booths and activities take place. It's a giant
block-party!

This is my first year there with a digital camera, and I had a blast.
I've got hundreds of shots to go through, but last night all I did was
street portraits of happy people. Hope you enjoy:

Re: Why to buy a K20D?

2008-06-30 Thread pnstenquist
The K20D may well display less noise at low ISO as well, but noise isn't really
a factor in this range. If you don't see it, it isn't worth worrying about. I
can say for sure that the K20D is less noisy than the K10D at ISO 400. At ISO
200, I can't recall having ever noticed noise with either camera.

Not quite. The voltages coming out of the CCD/CMOS cells are miniscule.
Improvements have been made by moving various amp circuits onto the
photosites, rather than circuitry sitting on the periphery of the
  sensor.
Yes. I can understand that. But what I'm trying to say is that I'm not
sure I quite see how this affects only high ISO values (which everyone
seems to be talking about.) Shouldn't these improvements mean there is
less noise across the entire range - since the signal always has to
travel though these circuits? (Or doesn't it?)

Re: Why to buy a K20D?

2008-06-30 Thread pnstenquist
Underexposure and correction in conversion always results in severe noise.
Don't kow why. But I know it happens, so I avoid it. And yes there is some
noise reduction logic applied to high ISO images in the K20D. You are able to
choose a level. I have mine set to weak, I believe. However, the camera
defaults to strong at ISO 6400. So 6400 images are somewhat lacking in
detail, but where that much speed is necessary, they're better than no image.
Here's a 6400 pic that I shot when I first bought the camera. The only light is
from a television screen across the room. Haven't really used that high an ISO
since then.

Isn't some of the noise reduction logic applied even in raw mode?
   It's
apparently the result of a sensor that generates less heat at high
  ISO than the K10D sensor.

You mean, the gain circuits generate add more noise due to increased
heat at high ISO settings? And this is less of a problem in the newer
 bodies?

But if this is the case, wouldn't you get better results with the older
bodies by underexposing at a lower and then correcting the output?

The original had a bad orange cast to it, but when i converted, you
could make out some detail of the steeple.

And that's when I shot him, Your Honour..

I think Dave needs to do a February Canada visit, what say.:-)

Send him to WaWa and let him hitchhike out..

 :-D

 Cold is a relative term.

I did spend a winter in Alberta from December to January once. The
coldest I experienced was -26 not including wind chill. THAT was cold.

Our winter is very damp so it feels colder at times than it did in
 freezing Alberta

I've lived in Alberta all of my life - up to 57 degrees N. We have a
yearly cold snap (typically in January) that lasts up to two weeks.
The cold usually hits a low of -40C, and it's dry.

I can't say much about a damp cold, but it doesn't sound like much fun.

I spent 90% of my survey years, working winters in Northern Ontario,
Man/Albeta etc.

Dry cold is fine to work in.

The damp cold we get here in Southern Ontario is a killer. Chills you
right to the bone.

I always vol for the winter norhtern work just to get out of here.:-)

I tried it with the 77mm Limited and the results were good, more than
usable. However, not as good as without the TC (as expected). Actually
it made for a nice, but slow compact telephoto. I ended up getting an
FA 135/2.8 so I don't have much need for that TC-lens combo anymore.

Back story to this one:
---
I was walking in the Castro before the San Francisco Pride Parade,
taking pictures, when this man walking past stopped and asked what I
was doing.

Taking pictures of stuff, I replied, I'm a photographer.

Take my picture? he asked.

Sure, I said, lifting the camera to my eye.

Unprompted, he pulled up his shirt, I snapped the shutter, and with a
big smile he yelled, To The Body!

Underexposure and correction in conversion always results in severe noise.
Don't kow why. But I know it happens, so I avoid it . . .

It happens because noise is (by definition) pretty much random.

If you underexpose by two stops, and correct in conversion, you're going
to get a certain amount of noise. If, however, you expose correctly,
you're going to get four times the number of photons contributing to the
signal. And while you have four times as much potential for noise, that
doesn't mean you're going to get four times as much noise. While only
exactly true for Gaussian noise distributions, you can expect to see the
amount of noise go up by roughly the square root of the exposure gain.
This means that the signal-to-noise ratio gets about one stop worse for
every two stops of underexposure.

Ad to that the fact that for low sensor values you also get far more
artifacts caused by quantization, and you want to avoid underexposure.

Yep, CF, Italian or otherwise, is fine stuff. Aluminum is stiff but
really passes the vibration of the road through. My butt came through
this year's ride in much better condition than the last time I did this
century :)

It's amazing how different the physiology differs between running and
cycling. This year I did much more bicycle training but I was still
getting passed by people who I'm sure wouldn't be within an hour of me
in a marathon. I mean, in smaller marathons I'm usually in contention
for an age group award, but in a bicycle century I'm strictly mid-pack
at best. The fact that it was a very hilly ride must have helped me
because I was passing people all the time going up hills, cruising by
when they were obviously gasping for breath and working hard... but on
the next flat they'd blast past me so fast I couldn't even contemplate
drafting.

I can't decide whether I want to train harder to do this again
*properly* or never, ever do it again at all!

was out for a while in the morning, so i took a few shots with it

Knowing the shutter lag is slow on these PS's i timed my shot as the
front legs hit the ground just in front of the jump.

This was the one and only try, as i nailed it.:-)

G3, Av at f8 and Tv at 1/400. LR adjusting just to see whati could get.

Looks not to bad in LR but way to light on a browser.

Comments welcome.

Got myself a new Pentax lens

2008-06-30 Thread Mark Roberts
I just received a Pentax T132 achromatic (two-element) close-up lens.
BH had a used one for $59.00 so I thought I'd go for it. It appears to
be in perfect condition. It's a +0.76 diopter lens, made for the 67
system but I'm hoping it works reasonably well on the FA-80-200/2.8 (I
know people who've had excellent results with the Nikon and Canon
2-element diopters on this lens). It's a 67mm thread, but the DSLR crop
factor lets it work without vignetting on the 77mm filter thread with a
step-down adapter.

I'll do some tests in a couple of days to see what the resulting image
quality is like. It'll be interesting to compare with the Sigma 180/3.5
macro. It'll also be interesting to see how it works *on* the Sigma 180
macro! Should get pretty good magnification with that combo. (On the
Pentax 80-200 at 200mm it seems to get better than half-size
magnification but less than life-size. I'm guessing approximately 1:1.5
ratio - good enough for a lot of field work.

Jos: Scancafe lets you pic the scans you want--and you only have to pay for
the ones you want! BUT, they do require you to purchase a 50% minimum--but
that should be a problem when doing huge scan-jobs, right? The chances of
you wanting at least half of your scanned images seems to be pretty high.

You should check out the web site.

Exquisite, Mark, just lovely!

Especially the bike shots. Italian CF. Mmmm...

If you remember, Mark, that's exactly what happened when we went for
our brief (about 40 miles?) ride from the cabin in NC. I was
horrendously out of shape, having busted my collarbone the previous
autumn, and had only been back on my bike for about a month (and had
the gut to show for it).

We were keeping together on the hills (both up and down, although
granted the roads we were on didn't have any ~big~ hills), but it was
on a flat that I pulled away from you. I didn't do it on purpose, I
was just taking a pull at the bottom of a hill, and I didn't want to
slow you down, so I was keeping up the same effort that I did going up
the previous hill, thinking you were on my tail. After a few minutes,
I looked around and you were about 1/2 a kilometre behind.

The legs were still there, but the lungs certainly weren't, which is
why I was barely keeping up with you (and I was huffing and puffing
while you weren't) going up hill yet was able to pull away on the
flat.

I guess carrying 15 or 20 extra pounds didn't help my hill climbing either, eh?

;-)

cheers,
frank

On the Ones We Missed

2008-06-30 Thread Christine Aguila
I suspect that the talent on this list misses very few shots, but in the off
chance there are some funny stories about missed shots, I'd be very
interested in reading them--if you are interested in sharing them.I've
even got a story of my own:

While walking down Clark street in Chicago in the early 80s , I spied a big,
burly doorman, who was the size of a small building and had the arms and
hands of a stone mason, leading a skinny, pimply faced teenager by the
collar out of a very dingy bar.

Outside the bar in broad daylight, the doorman began to give the kid a good
verbal thrashing all the while wagging his finger under the kid's nose.
Finally the doorman's index finger came to a full stop, and in the next
nano-second the teenager seized the moment and chomped on it-and tenaciously
hung on as the doorman yelled and desperately tried to shake the kid off.
The two spun about for awhile in front of the bar, whirling round round
till the kid picked his moment, let go, and made a run for it.

And I missed all of it. I didn't get one shot off-I was so engrossed
watching the drama I completely forgot to reach for my camera, which was
slung over my shoulder. I still have regrets about missing this shot--but
fortunately the memory is still well-seen, perfectly rendered with held
highlights detail rich shadows, well-framed, brilliantly composed, and
very sharp ;-).

Cheers, Christine

It was already converted, Mike.

It seems to make a BIG difference having the filter inside the camera.
Most of my test shots are in the 1/125 range so far. My istD at iso
400*(as this was shot) would yield about a 1/4 sec shutter at F8.

Re: On the Ones We Missed

2008-06-30 Thread ann sanfedele
Sounds like you needed video for this one :-)

I have tons of missed shots stories -- some because I wasn't carrying
the camera, some because I wasn't
fast enough, had the wrong lens, ran out of film, batteries died, etc...
or whoever was driving the car I
was in wouldn't stop. Lots more missed shtos than got shots over the
years - or maybe it just seems
that way. IF I think of a particularly cute story I'll send it a long
down the line

I took the G3 to the last day, Sunday of the three day show. The sun
was out for a while in the morning, so i took a few shots with it
during a warm up fro the first division.
Knowing the shutter lag is slow on these PS's i timed my shot as the
front legs hit the ground just in front of the jump.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/djbrooks/2624693515/

This was the one and only try, as i nailed it.:-)

G3, Av at f8 and Tv at 1/400. LR adjusting just to see whati could get.

Looks not to bad in LR but way to light on a browser.

 Comments welcome.

Yes, but right now your cardio capacity is still far better than mine,
and you've got two years of fairly extensive bike-work under your
belt.

I don't think I'd want to go against you right at this moment...

Since I get to choose weapons, I choose blunderbusses and balloons...

Cunning ploy but Herr von Bismark will not, on this occasion, be wearing his
pickelhaube.

Having insulted his Art, Herr von Bismark requests the pleasure of your

Hi again,

K20D, DA300/f4 wide open. Original shot in jpeg (sorry...), no
manipulations besides cropping and resaving in PS CS2 (jpg quality level
10). Not an art, not an intended nature photography, just to show the
sharpness wide open. Not bad... or what?

Well, I think ~everything~ is sharp, and compared to my photos
everything ~is~ sharp.

Whatever the case may be, I do think this is a very sharp photo, and a
terrific grab of this little fellow.
