There aren't many places around town that sell BW chemistry these days, so I had to drive into the city (I hate having to do that). I went to a place I've known about for ages but had never been too. They didn't have any. So I stocked up on other chemistry while I was there: http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/K20D/Story/_IGP2991.jpg Luckily just around the corner is another place that usually has a good range of papers chemicals. No, it's not the result of image processing you could apply in PhotoShop. I shoot only RAW. The RAW data is far superior. For sensor it makes no difference if you have high iso setting with low light and aperture wide open or bright sun with small aperture. Both cases sensor receives little light and noise contriutes significantly Amplification does not improve signal to noise ratio, because both are amplified with the same amount. Amplifier could even add additional noise Greetz Jos Toralf Lund wrote: Shouldn't that mean that the performance is exactly as good, relatively speaking, at high ISO values as it is at low ones (and vice versa)? GESO - Portraits of Pride
This past weekend was Pride Weekend here in Toronto. It used to be called Gay Pride, but now it's just Pride. So many more than just gay men and women participate, it just makes sense to call it Pride. It all culminates with a huge parade, which I usually avoid. Re: Why to buy a K20D?
The K20D may well display less noise at low ISO as well, but noise isn't really a factor in this range. If you don't see it, it isn't worth worrying about. I can say for sure that the K20D is less noisy than the K10D at ISO 400. At ISO 200, I can't recall having ever noticed noise with either camera. Paul -- Original message -- From: Toralf Lund [EMAIL PROTECTED] Derby Chang wrote: Toralf Lund wrote: [ ... ] Indeed. But one of the questions I was asking was really, is the output on the poorer performers just a result of bad processing choices that might be fixed on the outside? - Toralf Not quite. The voltages coming out of the CCD/CMOS cells are miniscule. Improvements have been made by moving various amp circuits onto the photosites, rather than circuitry sitting on the periphery of the sensor. Yes. I can understand that. But what I'm trying to say is that I'm not sure I quite see how this affects only high ISO values (which everyone seems to be talking about.) Shouldn't these improvements mean there is less noise across the entire range - since the signal always has to travel though these circuits? Re: Why to buy a K20D?
Underexposure and correction in conversion always results in severe noise. Don't kow why. But I know it happens, so I avoid it. And yes there is some noise reduction logic applied to high ISO images in the K20D. You are able to choose a level. I have mine set to weak, I believe. However, the camera defaults to strong at ISO 6400. So 6400 images are somewhat lacking in detail, but where that much speed is necessary, they're better than no image. Here's a 6400 pic that I shot when I first bought the camera. The only light is from a television screen across the room. Haven't really used that high an ISO since then. http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7006983size=lg -- Original message -- From: Toralf Lund [EMAIL PROTECTED] Paul Stenquist wrote: No, it's not the result of image processing you could apply in PhotoShop. And this is less of a problem in the newer bodies? But if this is the case, wouldn't you get better results with the older bodies by underexposing at a lower and then correcting the output? - T -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I tried it with the 77mm Limited and the results were good, more than usable. However, not as good as without the TC (as expected). Actually it made for a nice, but slow compact telephoto. I ended up getting an FA 135/2.8 so I don't have much need for that TC-lens combo anymore. It happens because noise is (by definition) pretty much random. If you underexpose by two stops, and correct in conversion, you're going to get a certain amount of noise. If, however, you expose correctly, you're going to get four times the number of photons contributing to the signal. And while you have four times as much potential for noise, that doesn't mean you're going to get four times as much noise. While only exactly true for Gaussian noise distributions, you can expect to see the amount of noise go up by roughly the square root of the exposure gain. This means that the signal-to-noise ratio gets about one stop worse for every two stops of underexposure. Ad to that the fact that for low sensor values you also get far more artifacts caused by quantization, and you want to avoid underexposure. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Got myself a new Pentax lens
I just received a Pentax T132 achromatic (two-element) close-up lens. BH had a used one for $59.00 so I thought I'd go for it. It appears to be in perfect condition. It's a +0.76 diopter lens, made for the 67 system but I'm hoping it works reasonably well on the FA-80-200/2.8 (I know people who've had excellent results with the Nikon and Canon 2-element diopters on this lens). It's a 67mm thread, but the DSLR crop factor lets it work without vignetting on the 77mm filter thread with a step-down adapter. I'll do some tests in a couple of days to see what the resulting image quality is like. It'll be interesting to compare with the Sigma 180/3.5 macro. It'll also be interesting to see how it works *on* the Sigma 180 macro! Should get pretty good magnification with that combo. (On the Pentax 80-200 at 200mm it seems to get better than half-size magnification but less than life-size. I'm guessing approximately 1:1.5 ratio - good enough for a lot of field work. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

On the Ones We Missed
I suspect that the talent on this list misses very few shots, but in the off chance there are some funny stories about missed shots, I'd be very interested in reading them--if you are interested in sharing them.I've even got a story of my own: While walking down Clark street in Chicago in the early 80s , I spied a big, burly doorman, who was the size of a small building and had the arms and hands of a stone mason, leading a skinny, pimply faced teenager by the collar out of a very dingy bar. Outside the bar in broad daylight, the doorman began to give the kid a good verbal thrashing all the while wagging his finger under the kid's nose. Finally the doorman's index finger came to a full stop, and in the next nano-second the teenager seized the moment and chomped on it-and tenaciously hung on as the doorman yelled and desperately tried to shake the kid off. The two spun about for awhile in front of the bar, whirling round round till the kid picked his moment, let go, and made a run for it. And I missed all of it. I didn't get one shot off-I was so engrossed watching the drama I completely forgot to reach for my camera, which was slung over my shoulder. I still have regrets about missing this shot--but fortunately the memory is still well-seen, perfectly rendered with held highlights detail rich shadows, well-framed, brilliantly composed, and very sharp ;-). That works! You nailed the timing, and the high contrast result is quite appealing. Well done sir. Re: On the Ones We Missed
Sounds like you needed video for this one :-) I have tons of missed shots stories -- some because I wasn't carrying the camera, some because I wasn't fast enough, had the wrong lens, ran out of film, batteries died, etc... or whoever was driving the car I was in wouldn't stop. Lots more missed shtos than got shots over the years - or maybe it just seems that way. IF I think of a particularly cute story I'll send it a long down the line ann Christine Aguila wrote: I suspect that the talent on this list misses very few shots, but in the off chance there are some funny stories about missed shots, I'd be very interested in reading them--if you are interested in sharing them.I've even got a story of my own: While walking down Clark street in Chicago in the early 80s , I spied a big, burly doorman, who was the size of a small building and had the arms and hands of a stone mason, leading a skinny, pimply faced teenager by the collar out of a very dingy bar.
