Photowalking with a Digital Native
I had the most amazing experience today with my nephew Akira: we went on our first formal photowalk together. He carried the K10D with the FA 50mm f 1.4 I carried the 20D with the 50mm macro 2.8. I explained the concept, put it on program, explained autofocus, set it to RAW , and explained photowalking to him: Shoot whatever tickles your fancy, I said, and off we went (after, that is, I took an official nose-behind-the-camera photog shot of him). He'd already shot 45 pics in the 1st half block of our walk. I quickly switched to jpeg fearing he'd run out of memory card space much sooner than I had expected. He was amazing to watch: he buzzed around like a bee shooting whatever, indeed, tickled his fancy. He shot confidently, fearlessly, thoughtfully, and quickly. I never interfered. I never told him what to shoot or gave any suggestions. He soon wanted to try dials and buttons, and I showed him how. He tried for motion blur, panning, he even, without any prompting from me, decided to try some shots while he spun round and round, releasing the shutter. His eagerness to experiment was delightful to watch and made me realize I need to bring a lot more play to my photography. Anyway, I'd like to share 4 beauties he took. These shots are all off-camera, no rendering at all, not even any crop adjustments. When I saw the forth photo, I thought, Oh, my gosh. My nephew is channeling Godfrey :-). The 5th shot is his official Pentax Photog shot. http://photo.net/photodb/slideshow?folder_id=871858 Comments/critique welcome and I'll pass them on to Akira. Re: Extreme printer head cleaning tips?
Anyone have any other cleaning ideas? First off, the warnings... Things not to do. Do not use Window cleaners, Alcohol, Bleach, Peroxide, Lighter fluid, degreasers, engine cleaners, mineral spirits or lacquer thinner. Also do not use force or compressed air as these these can cause serious damage to the print head. Looks like Formula 409 is Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, which doesn't appear to conflict with your list (from the little I remember from high school chemistry, anyway). No wonder the Epson rep recommended it. :) I am seriously curious what is in those cleaning solutions you linked to. You say not to use force, but those syringe methods force cleaning fluid through the nozzles. Is this not the sort of force you mean? Re: Extreme printer head cleaning tips?
Hello Cory, I've had somewhat similar experiences. The higher end Epsons seem to be much better about head clogs (not happening), but I have thrown away 3 low end Epsons with exactly your experience. I have an HP sitting here for the last couple of years with nary a hiccup. My general recommendation to people is if they print very sparingly, to get an HP. If they print quite a bit, then perhaps go the Epson route. Mind you, these are not photo printing people as a rule, just the regular shmoe who prints on plain paper. -- Best regards, Bruce Saturday, October 25, 2008, 5:32:49 PM, you wrote: CW John, CW I believe I've cured my print head clogging problem altogether. I don't print much so just about CW every time I wanted to use the Epson it needed cleaning from having the CW ink dry on the heads. This was a total PITA (Imaging you pop home to CW get the interweb to print you a map to where you need to be in about CW fifteen minutes less that it'll take to drive there only to find that CW the printer doesn't want toprint). Last night I set up my old Epson 2200 for the first time in a couple years. Naturally, the heads were all clogged from disuse. Recalling my old Epson rep's advice, I sprayed some Formula 409 on Q-tips and moved the head back and forth over the swabs. I did this many times (at least two dozen, if not more). I also ran Epson's head cleaning maintenance app (in their normal printing drivers) quite a few times. The magenta and yellow heads are still partly clogged, and I just can't get them to clear up. The rep said not to use alcohol to clean the heads, so instead I put a couple bottles of alcohol in me (in this case, Pyramid Apricot Hefeweisen) and called it a night. Anyone have any other cleaning ideas? Also, is there any way to easily remove and clean the waste ink pad, where the automated head cleaning takes place? I think what 'they' mean is: Don't force the plunger in the syringe any harder that it takes to fill the nozzle tube, then let it sit 3+ hours (overnight is best) If it's really dried up in there, you may have to repeat the process. But don't try to force the dried ink through the nozzles with syringe pressure. Wait until it liquifies and gentle pressure will them force the goo through the heads onto the paper towel you slide under them - you did remember to put that under their, didn't you? :-0 Joseph McAllister Pentaxian On Oct 25, 2008, at 23:01 , John Celio wrote: You say not to use force, but those syringe methods force cleaning fluid through the nozzles. Another CS4 Pano
I assembled another set of virtual tour pics with CS4's auto align and auto blend tools. This is the living area of an apartment, and it's a full 360 pano. When I shoot one of these tours, I bracket every frame, even, one over, and one under. Because this apartment had a very dark hallway and a very bright window, I used all three exposures in the assembly of this pano. CS4.s auto align assembled the frames almost perfectly in 30 seconds or so of processing. I just watched. Then it blended the different exposures with the auto blend tool. I'm liking this. I have to get out and shoot my favorite little pond at the nature center. Anyway, the apartment pic is here: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8105046size=lg Click to make it smaller. Big thanks and cheers, Christine Great story, it reminded me of me when I was 14, had my first camera, and was always going photowalking. Your nephew seems to have a natrual eye for photography. Picture 1: I realize it was blind luck with the camera choosing the settings, but the depth of field is perfect. Picture 2: The out of focus tree is a problem, he was just slightly out of position when he pushed the button, or he could have been a bit closer, but I like the remoteness of the composition. Picture 3: I like the subtlety of the squirrel hiding in the middle of an excellently composed picture. Picture 4, I would have liked the leaves a bit lower in the frame. Your portfolio reveals a strong eye for composition, interesting subjects, and a general understanding of the conventions of the photographic generes. This is most impressive. I love the stairs with the feet. To my eye, you caught the zig-zag of the lines just right, though I might like to see a little more leg attached to the feet, not a lot, but just a tad more. The silhouette is very nice. I can definitely get a mood-story out of that one. Your people shots are lots of fun; I like them very much; People shots are my favorite. You finish off your gallery with a real stunner: that fog shot is a beauty. Only once did I have the opportunity to photograph fog--your shot is a lot better than mine! Keep shooting! And good luck! Thanks Dave, Cotty and Christine for looking. The company that produces the virtual tours is happy with my work. But until I got some stitching software, I had no real way of checking my results before uploading them. I guess I'll eventually see the finished tours once they're posted on real estate sites, but I send just the individual frames to the company that stitches them and makes them move. I assumed that since my pano head was set up right and my frames overlapped that everything was working, but it's nice to see an assembly. I was going to buy Panorama Maker from ArcSoft, but I decided to see what CS4 could do first. I'm glad that I waited. Then, the Domke name tag evokes price tag, doesn't it. lol. Thanks, Godfrey, for your kind comments. RPS Workshop
Had an interesting time at the RPS Workshop where I showed some of my Fez photos today. In short they took quite a battering. Not for the content or subject matter, although of course some pictures were stronger than others, but for the technical quality. I submitted them on a CD for projection on a 1024x768 projector, so 1024 was the maximum length of the horizontal. The files had to be TIFFs in Adobe RGB. I exported them as specified from Lightroom, but didn't do any sharpening or other work on the tiffs. The results were very disappointing - flat looking, soft, no snap, so they were justified in what they said. I've no idea why the quality was so poor - I have to do some investigating. I may consider prints though, and a different style of presentation. Thanks to everyone who helped in the selection and sequencing. Watch this space.
