He was very nice about it and we had a friendly chat about why and, of

Book orders for Chicago

2010-04-20 Thread Mark Roberts
Several people have emailed asking if they can get hardcover or
imagewrap versions of the book from me in Chicago. Tha this point the
answer is no. I have ordered 20 paperback books to bring to opening
night, that's all. If I can get 10 requests for the image wrap book
there's still time for me to order...

Let me know.

Students were appalled by the Becky Carter site (many looking at in

can't help but stare at). Even the basic portrait "enhancement" tricks

More silly rules

2010-04-20 Thread Chris Mitchell
On the Thames walk with Bob, we arrived at the Thames barrier and I took a
few standard shots of the barrier like this one:
http://www.zen50061.zen.co.uk/riverwalk/slides/_IGP2079.jpg

And as we walked on I spotted the admin building which had an interesting
roof reflecting the materials used in the barrier itself. I thought it would
be a different perspective and hadn't got any further than taking this shot:
http://www.zen50061.zen.co.uk/riverwalk/slides/_IGP2080.jpg

- when a man came out of the security hut and very nicely uttered the now
famous words "sorry but you're not allowed to take pictures here". He said
that it was OK to take pictures of the barrier itself, but not behind the
scenes (albeit a publicly owned building taken from a public right of way).
He was very nice about it and we had a friendly chat about why and, of
course, he could only say "it's to stop terrorists taking pictures of
targets" - quickly adding, because he was embarrassed, "not that you're a
terrorist of course!"

So, let me get this straight. In this crazy world it's OK to take pictures
of one of the top 20 terrorist targets in the British Isles - but you can't
take pictures of the admin building where they count the money and pay the
wages. Mad. I suppose I'll be sent to the Tower for publishing that one.

Oh - there was one of Those Birds there too:

Re: Hot Dog Johnny's

2010-04-20 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
There was a great little sub shop in my neighborhood when I was a
teenager. It was in a little shack, and was called The Hoagie Hut.
(A hoagie is one of the many names for an Italian sandwich on a roll,
including hoagie, sub, hero, grinder, etc.) Because of the valuable
location, the family got offers to sell the land, but eventually the
decided instead to build their own little strip mall so they could
keep the Hoagie Hut going, even if in modern guise. The hoagies are
still fabulous. Here is the new place:

PUG server is back up

2010-04-20 Thread Igor Roshchin

Dear All,

As many have figured out, the recent downtime of the PUG server
was caused by transition of our sponsor, Frontier Vision Technologies
aka Frontex, (and hence Komkon) to a different network.

The PUG server was brought back up this morning.
I apologize for this longer-than-expected downtime.

There may be (hopefully very short) periods of down time in a day
or two when better network equipment will be installed to further improve
connectivity.

I appreciate your patience. Also, thanks to William Robb for forwarding
my message to the list yesterday when I didn't have access to my e-mail.

Igor

PS. As for the April PUG, - the question should be addressed to the
current PUG-master, Scott.

Re: Hot Dog Johnny's

2010-04-20 Thread Bob Sullivan
Dan,

We have a 19 store chain here in Chicago named Portillo's.
It started in the same kind of a shack.
Now some of his stores do $4,000,000 per year.
Not to bad for a Hot Dog place!

I always think of dining cars when I see these places, maybe because
we have a converted railroad car restaurant at the entrance to
downtown Chicago.

Many of the old family-run places are closed or closing, replaced by
national fast food franchises or those terrible chain restaurants. A
few places, like Hot Dog Johnny's, have been around so long that they
have built up a loyal customer base that keeps coming back because of
the service and the atmosphere. I patronize these local

Dan,
The diner series has been interesting and this picture highlights the
circular construction of this diner. I had missed that before. We
still have some old, circular fast food joints from the '50's here in
Chicago. Today they are orphans, too small for most food uses and in
poor condition.
