Re: vote for your favorite street shooter

By the end of round 2 most of the big names will have been pitted
against each other leaving very few of the greats in the contest.
It's not a bad idea, but the "organiser" doesn't know much about
keeping the star attractions away from each other until at least the
semi-finals.

It's off Thom Hogan's Nikon thingie (note spelling please Tanja),

A lot of it seems to, though with Pentax the stabilization is at the

affect bokeh and the like.

I've not actually done any comprehensive tests. I also always figured

On the occasions that I notice that 250-1200mm lens, I think WTF? And
then I wonder things like "who the hell makes this lens, how awful can
it be and what's it really like?".

But my mind goes back to all those generic stovepipe 400mm and 500mm
teles that IIRC were made by Tamron and sold under countless in-house
brand names at countless camera stores around the world, usually for
$49.99. In their day they were sneered at as cheap and nasty
imitations of lenses for the use of cheap and nasty imitators of
photographers. But somewhere in the years between, while I was
looking elsewhere, these lenses became cult classics, fondly regarded
for their good performance at modest prices. Again, WTF?

SO, has anybody ever read a review of these 250-1200 cheapies? Or
used one and is prepared to admit to it?

The response of the movement sensors used in the Pentax bodies is no
where near as fast as 1kHz (though I suspect he's interpreting this
data incorrectly), basically they can detect sway and a certain degree
of jolt. Like Thom suggests there is a definite shutter speed limit to
which SR is useful, pointed out fairly eloquently by Falk Lumo on the
Pentax web forums. It's useful but it's no panacea and really I don't
think I'd miss it at all moving to a camera like the D700.

This is a pet peeve of mine too, however my car is large, white and I
turn either the parking, headlight or driving lights on as the
conditions require and people still don't seem to see me (often the
ones in microscopic cars which is a worry for them).

When I rode a bike I had a black jacket but I wore a bright single

Re: Exhibit Question - Dress

2010-05-04 Thread Stan Halpin
Normally John I would agree. But these incidents (no one was actually hit by
the way, just close calls) occurred because soldiers weren't using crossing
areas, and the road section was poorly lit. As you know the Army recognizes the
need to be visible for traffic safety and requires reflective clothing for
runners, cyclists, and motorcyclists. And then we have guys in camo wandering
across the road, ignoring oncoming traffic whose drivers can't possibly see
them. Obviously the problem really wasn't the clothing but rather the lack of
situation awareness on the part of the pedestrians. In a related pet peeve of
mine, I intensely dislike drivers of greyish vehicles who drive in rain or dim
light conditions without headlights turned on. Yes, they can see the road well
enough without their lights, but others can't see them.

You expect it on the battlefield, too. That doesn't make it stand out
any better!

Seriously, the colors of "camo" have been developed over years to be
as difficult as possible for human to pick up in a wide variety of
conditions. Works pretty well: Statistics of motorcycle accidents, for
example, show riders wearing camo/khaki clothing to be over
represented in statistics.

It's not caused by the clothing.

It's more a correlation with an age demographic. The riders most likely
to be wearing camouflage uniforms are also the age demographic most
likely to ride unsafely. You can find a similar correlation between
camouflage uniforms and automobile accidents ... for the same reason.

The Army requires motorcycle riders to wear reflective high-visibility
vests over their clothing when riding, in addition to helmets and other
PPE ... even on posts in states that do not have helmet laws.

While the Army can't ALWAYS catch every rider when the rider is NOT in
uniform and is away from the post, they do enforce it quite stringently
for riders off post, in uniform and ON POST it don't matter whether
you're in uniform or not. You operate a motorcycle on post, you wear
Army Standard PPE including the vest.

In the military operating a P.O.V. is a privilege, not a right, and
commanders are not at all unwilling to revoke that privilege if the
soldier fails to adhere to Army standards. Because the commander can be
held responsible if anything happens to a soldier and investigation
reveals the commander was not adequately enforcing the safety regulations.

Did you know any soldier going on leave who is planning to travel by
motorcycle is required to file a risk management plan with a designated
safety supervisor? And that the soldier cannot get his/her leave
approved until the risk management plan is accepted?

Now I don't know how the National Guard does it in other states, but in
North Carolina, if you show up for drill Armory riding a motorcycle, you
better have an U.S. Army certificate showing you passed the ARMY test
and you better be wearing Army Standard PPE.

Not in black and white. I *know* the bill should be screaming orange,
and the strange grey causes speedbumps in my brain.

There's something wrong -- this is more of a commiseration than a
criticism, because swans are horrors from a managing-light-levels point
of view -- with the choice of brightness curves because the base of the
neck goes completely flat. Between the noticeable feather detail on the
head, the drop of water off the bill, and the feather detail of the back
(scapular feathers, but I'm trying to suppress this impulse of
precision) it looks like something has gone wrong with the photograph to
produce the flatness, rather like the differential-chemical-decay effect
one sees in old prints. (if you're trying for looks-like-a-clean-scan-
of-an-old-photo-of-a-swan, it's a resounding success, but I don't think
you are.)

The head detail is very nicely done. If you have more dots there, it
would be nice to see that area larger and in colour.

-- Graydon, who might point out there's a mute swan nest at the
southwest corner of Grenadier Pond within 10 m of the sidewalk. (8 of
the intervening meters are water, so it's not particularly crazy of the
swans. Not that many people in Toronto actively want their leg broken.)

Yep. Returning to the theme of motorcycles, helmets that are one solid
color are safer (in the sense of making you less likely to be *in* an
accident, as opposed to providing better protection) than
multi-colored helmets because they make your head more recognizable as

The wine I got was from a vintage that was notable only for how awful it

But, 1 part 7-up to 2 parts red wine made it drinkable after a fashion, and

But seriously, your problem can't be compared to logging on to Gmail
or Flickr. You're logging onto a system which gives you a much deeper
degreee of access and control over the data stored inside than the
users of those and other cybertainment networks. My wife sometimes
accesses her office desktop from home via a "remote desktop". And
guess what? Right, Internet Explorer or nothing. It's their system,
so it's their choice, same as your situatiuon with the DoD. They do
it to protect themselves, lest some nefarious soul finds a security
hole that could exploited by using a third party browser. And yeah, I
see the irony in their use of the holeiest browser to ensure security,
but it caters to the widest user base and means they only need attend
to the security issues of one browser, not all of them.

Just a pity they didn't tell you to go to one of their own computers
in the first place, that was inconsiderate. SOP for a government
agency, really, you should have expected no less.

Oh, I don't know. This is the first time I've seen anyone from Pentax
mention a camera beyond the K-7 in the lineup (other than the 645D).

It looks as though we might see the expected mid-life kicker for the K-7
later on this year. Of course there is all the usual speculation about
what this will be, and the whole range of improbable suggestions (such
as using the lower-resolution K-x sensor). But that's nothing compared
to the predictions as to just what a higher-spec camera body would be.
There's the all-too-predictable dichotomy between those who expect (or
at least hope) to see a 'full frame' sensor and those who are sure that
Pentax aren't large enough to have three separate lens systems.

Only time will tell.

The thing is it wouldn't be three seperate lens systems, only two.
Sure, the DA lenses won't serve a 24x36mm camera but the DFA, (assuming
Pentax keeps that designation), will serve 24x36 and 16x24mm formats.
So it's really 2 and 1/4 lens lines. As the DA lenses reach the end of
their lives all those except the specialty WA lenses would be replaced
with DFA equivalents.

I think that we have the right to comment, often the users have a
better idea of what companies should be doing compared to what they
are doing. For instance the very obvious fact that here and on other
forums Pentax shooters are either supplementing or entirely dumping
their Pentax kits for 36x24mm sensor bodies whilst Pentax is gearing
to provide a very niche 645D body and some lenses is difficult to
envision as a well conceived decision on so many levels.

Re: Exhibit Question - Dress

2010-05-04 Thread David Parsons
That's not really surprising if you understand how camo works. It's
not really designed to hide you, it's designed to break up your
pattern while you are moving so it's harder to determine your shape.
You see a moving form, but not a distinct outline. It's similar to
how the stripes on a zebra work with tall grass when they are running
as a herd. The stripes and grass combine to make it very difficult
for lions to tell where one zebra ends and another one starts.

In theory, these three links should be available to anyone:

Mine-Pentax:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=207643&id=653299672&l=7dd07b367e

Scott-Nikon: (corrected link)
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=167122&id=746308024&l=800a4bd0ca

David-Canon and Panny P&S:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tsgeisel/sets/72157623990213540/

With the relatively bright light, I'd say that the K-x and the D70
came out fairly close with the Rebel XSi lagging a bit. Part of that
may have to do with Scott and I shooting at blues events a lot more
frequently and David primarily shooting at Victorian dances, which
tend to be much more brightly lit.

Yet somehow I'd expect electrics to be brighter than gas lamps.

I don't think that Scott actually posted any that weren't taken in the
brightly lit section while several of mine (if you can see the tags
for Derek and Ammy) were. Dave shot quite a few of dancers in the
darker areas, but exposed for the more brightly lit sections.

I can see that it could be fun to have a dance photography competition
with different styles of dance in different lighting situations.

It's quite a difficult journey to plan. A few years ago I tried to organise
the trip from London to St. Petersburg and back by train for a non-flyer in
her 80s. It would have been far to difficult for her, and she ended up going
on a cruise there instead.

Deutsche Bahn's website is excellent for planning European rail travel. The
classic off-line resource is Thomas Cook's European Rail Timetable, used in
conjunction with their map.

I agree with you. Travelling by train is a very civilised activity (or
inactivity if you prefer). It tends to be shortage of time and the fact of
islands that prevent me using it all the time. When I went to Fez a couple
of years ago I originally planned the whole trip to be a train journey from
London. Unfortunately I didn't have time for that, and flew instead,
although I did have interesting journeys between Casablanca and Fez.

I also spent an interesting month travelling in India by train a few years
ago.

Not really, Quicksilver is really just a bit of UI that mostly
functions as keybindings, allowing keyboard lovers to ignore the mouse
more. If you aren\t mouse-phobic it's much less usable. I've tried it

I'm not really into what Pentax "needs" to do. I figure that's Pentax's
problem to solve. They can do whatever they want. Whatever they think
they "need" to do is fine with me.

There are some things I would like to have available from Pentax;
cameras that work with my lenses & lenses that work with my cameras.

And if Pentax decides they "need" to make the things I want available, I
will buy them ... assuming I can scrape up the money.

Or if Pentax doesn't, and I decide I can't live without them, I'll buy
from someone who does make them available.

In the meantime, I'm here to "discuss" Pentax - past, present AND
future. Even if it is "pure speculation".

Sounds like you had a great trip!

In my example, I was thinking more about just getting from A to B, as
a sheer transport. For that purpose, a couple of hours wasted in
airports beats a couple of days wasted on a train every time.

I agree time spent in airports IS wasted, but from my point of view,

Or about LA to Seattle.
I was referring to the Oslo to Gothenburg leg of the trip.

Or you might be able to find a website to help with planning your itinerary.

http://www.seat61.com/Norway.htm

Mainly devoted to going the other direction, but it does include Oslo ->
London. I guess they figure you might want to travel the other direction
to get back to London if nothing else.

I'd fly TO Europe or to England, but once there going to all those other
different places isn't really so much a hardship for me as it is an
opportunity.

Paul

I feel very similarly, which is why I did very little serious
photography for about 20 years. Without access to a darkroom, it
wasn't worth the bother and I spent time and money on other hobbies
many of which involved fast cars or women, or at least cars I
attempted to drive fast.

I have finally learned that my resources are finite. My strategy is
to learn each step of the process in turn. I figure that with raw
files, I can always go back and reprocess, or reprint the photos
that are worth doing so, but until I'm competent with a camera, I
won't have any, or at least many, photos that are worth investing
the effort.

I hope that in the next year or two that my camera and lighting
skills will be to the point that I'll get more improvement from
investing time and money into learning post processing than I will
practicing taking the pictures. Somewhere around that time, I'll be
able to justify much higher printing costs, at least for the best of
my photos.

In the mean time, it's fun to get 8x12s of my better shots, and
worth dropping $50-100 a month on prints.

I rarely spend that much per month, although printing was expensive
when I was sorting out my workflow. But now I can usually make a print
that I consider perfect on the first attempt. Once in a while, I'll go
for a second, and then the tweak is usually so minor that it's hard to
see a difference. My cost in ink and paper to print with my Epson
R2400 on 13 x 19 Ilford Gold Fibre or Epson Exhibition Fiber is about
$4 per sheet. That's one 12 x 18 or two 8 x 12 prints. I have boxes
packed with prints and dozens in frames, so I pick the shots that I
want to print very carefully.

Startup is expensive. But once you've sorted it all out, printing can
be quite economical. And very rewarding.

That's some damn good camo! I'm sure some smart salesman at the
clothes supplier can work that into an ad campaign: "Camouflage so
good, not even your own people will see you! [There are currently 3
people wearing our camouflage in this ad.]"

I dunno, but it seems to me if you're on an Army base you ought to
expect people crossing streets to be wearing camo.

I'd love to see everyone there who knows what Pentax 'needs' to do
start their own camera company and show everyone else how easy it is
to do. They seem to know what they are talking about, it shouldn't be
too difficult for them.

Sounds like you had a great trip!

In my example, I was thinking more about just getting from A to B, as
a sheer transport. For that purpose, a couple of hours wasted in
airports beats a couple of days wasted on a train every time.

I agree. Facebook sucks, and it keeps coming up with new and
interesting forms of suckage too. However, it's the defacto social
networking site and the most effective way of distributing snapshots of

Last year we spent 3 weeks in Italy and travelled entirely by train.  Enjoyed
it immensely.  Even more remarkable in that I am an amputee (left leg below the
knee) and wheelchair bound.  The Italtrain has a service called "Salablue"
which put me on a  lift, put me on a disability enabled coach, and removed me
again at our destination.  All at no additional cost.
