Kind of like a clear changing bag for DSLRs

2010-05-28 Thread Larry Colen
If I can, I'd like to go back to burning man this year. It has some amazing
photographic opportunities (Larry Harvey's megalomania notwithstanding), but
the environment is hellish dusty. Changing lenses could be a real problem.
One of the items in my pile o'stuff is my changing bag from my old film
developing days. It seems that something like that would be great for changing
lenses on DSLRs in harsh environments. Put the camera in the bag, zip it up,
put your hands through the sleeves and you've got a lot less dust floating
around when you change lenses.

Of course, a changing bag is designed such that it is rather tough to see what
you're doing.

So, does anyone know of clear changing bags, for changing lenses in dusty
environments?

That might work during the day, but for night photography, the zooms just

I've found in the past that a couple of fast primes covers probably more
than 90% of normal photography. I spent a week or so shooting a market in
India with a 35/1.4 and an 85/1.4 and never really felt the need for much
else as far as focal lengths go. f/2s would probably have been adequate for
most low light situations down to the point where you really need to use
flash.

On the other hand, I just tried it using a 2.5 gallon ziplock bag, and it
seemed to work.

Sounds like it, but bear in mind that in a fast-moving situation it's just
more crap getting in the way of shooting.

Actually, I clipped the relevant sentence. It wasn't my friends that

May I suggest what I do? Keep a business card handy with a link to a
website where rates may be obtained. I also have a couple of different
A4 sized info sheets detailing services offered. These live in a pocket
and readily erupt forth when the occasion arises.

Deciding what to charge is a conundrum that surpasses time. I have based
my rates on what is considered 'the going daily rate' and adjust
accordingly. This makes me as cheap or as expensive as anyone else doing
the same thing. But what I try to do is offer more than the competition
at the same price. These extras won't be cost-sensitive to me but might
appear as good bonuses to the client. For instance, when producing DVDs
I can make sure there are the correct files on the DVD for it to play in
a DVD player *and* a computer - not necessarily always possible for the
uninitiated.

For a stills photographer, this might mean not only making low-res
selection pics (digital contacts) online, but maybe sending through a
few sheets of printed contacts as well. People still like holding paper
even in the 21st century. Or maybe you show up to the shoot just wearing
a thong.

Second thought, scrub that last one.

 to shoot a friend's apartment.
At some point this will become a GESO, but for now I'm
exploring what Photoshop CS5 can do with it's built in (and
 much improved) HDR function.
This is an HDR of 4 exposures ranging from 1 second to 30
seconds, shot with the 15mm LTD at f/11 on the K-7.

Re: Kind of like a clear changing bag for DSLRs

2010-05-28 Thread David Parsons
Turn on the power on dust shake and that should help with most loose
dust. Unless the wind is constantly blowing dust and sand around,
you'll be able to change lenses with little problem.

If you use good lens discipline you should be okay.

Do you really want to miss a shot because you spent 5 minutes futzing
with changing a lens, when you can clone out a spot in post?

If I can, I'd like to go back to burning man this year.  It has some amazing

One of the items in my pile o'stuff is my changing bag from my old film
developing days.  It seems that something like that would be great for
changing lenses on DSLRs in harsh environments.  Put the camera in the bag,
zip it up, put your hands through the sleeves and you've got a lot less dust
floating around when you change lenses.

Of course, a changing bag is designed such that it is rather tough to see
 what you're doing.

So, does anyone know of clear changing bags, for changing lenses in dusty
 environments?

Those optical adapters can handle a few mm of difference in register.
You'd need something far more complex to adapt a lens with a ~28mm

Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend opens next Friday in
North Carolina!!!
Do we have a list of those who have tickets or plan to attend?
Don Nelson is a host and Mark Roberts is presenting.
Doug Brewer should be judging once again for the Doug Mark show.
I believe Christine A. and Rick Wormer can't make it this year.
But I think Bill and Phyllis Owens are coming up to the mountain.
Lynn and I are driving down and staying in town.
Anybody else get tickets and planning to attend?

At some point this will become a GESO, but for now I'm exploring what
Photoshop CS5 can do with it's built in (and much improved) HDR function.
This is an HDR of 4 exposures ranging from 1 second to 30 seconds, shot
with the 15mm LTD at f/11 on the K-7.

Re: PESO: Shooting Apartments

Having shot some real estate interiors in the past, I know how
difficult the lighting can be - the dynamic range is huge. From that
perspective, this is excellent in bringing out everything without
lots of blowup. There is a loss of contrast, that is palatable, but
would be nicer if you could punch it up just a bit.

For the two of you who don't know, that's our Mr. Roberts in my dining

talking about the Sony.) Click the link over on the right that says
More Info. The next couple of photos on the card, also taken at

more photos, at various different shutter, aperture and ISO settings,
and now there's no stripe. Odd.

FS Friday: PZ-1p body, great user condition, $125

2010-05-28 Thread Joe Wilensky
This body would likely get a BGN rating on KEH, but it operates
wonderfully and has signs of average use.

I think this is my favorite autofocus-era Pentax body; see the specs
at http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/film_Z-PZ/zpz1p.html.

All caps and covers (plus strap and a battery) included; there is a
slight mark on the top LCD (near top center; see photo) and the common
crack on the bottom plate by the battery door (see photo) that doesn't
affect operation in any way.

$125, includes Priority Mail shipping with insurance in the
continental U.S., additional for shipping elsewhere.

Been up on the playa many times. Just take good care to get out of the
wind and dust off the camera and lens before you dismount the lens and
swap the new one on.

Yeah it's dusty out there but nothing terrible or unusual.

Re: Kind of like a clear changing bag for DSLRs

2010-05-28 Thread Ken Waller

Real shooters don't need no stinkin changing bag ! ;+]

I just did 10 days shooting in S.E. Utah (mostly high desert like environ)
with my K20D and followed the same procedure I used all my life when
changing lenses on SLR bodies. It was an unusual time there as we had winds
most of the time with some as high as 50 + mph.

I'm as quick as I can be with the swap - keep the body pointed downward
(dirt can't fall up into the body), keep caps on lenses til the last moment
before attaching to the camera body and keep lens body as close as
possible immediately before the swap. I also exercised the dust removal
feature of the K20D several times over the 10 days.

Subject: Kind of like a clear changing bag for DSLRs

If I can, I'd like to go back to burning man this year. It has some
amazing photographic opportunities (Larry Harvey's megalomania
notwithstanding), but the environment is hellish dusty. Changing lenses
could be a real problem. One of the items in my pile o'stuff is my
changing bag from my old film developing days. It seems that something
like that would be great for changing lenses on DSLRs in harsh
environments. Put the camera in the bag, zip it up, put your hands
through the sleeves and you've got a lot less dust floating around when
you change lenses.

Of course, a changing bag is designed such that it is rather tough to see
what you're doing.

So, does anyone know of clear changing bags, for changing lenses in dusty
environments?

I checked around a bit. No sign of Gatling-Email on my end. I sent
this from the BlackBerry and that's been fine before. It must be
Obama's fault.

No, he fixed it.
It was actuaslly Bush's fault.

I tend to agree with you on this, my caveat being don't charge friends
unless you are prepared for them to no longer be friends. For myself, I
just don't charge friends, or if I do, I let them buy me an expensive
bottle of Scotch or some such.

I don't equate what I do with what my lawyer or doctor does.

Yeah, well neither do I, but point I was trying to make needed some kind
of professional services for the friends to engage in for their
livelihood and those were the best I could come up with on the spur of
the moment. ;-D

Re: Shooting Apartments

2010-05-28 Thread John Sessoms

From: William Robb

A month or so ago I started a project to shoot a friend's apartment.
At some point this will become a GESO, but for now I'm exploring what
Photoshop CS5 can do with it's built in (and much improved) HDR function.
This is an HDR of 4 exposures ranging from 1 second to 30 seconds, shot
with the 15mm LTD at f/11 on the K-7.

http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrobb/pictures/newer_still/apt1.html

Enjoy, and comments are welcomed.

It's NOT overdone the way some HDR images appear to be. Good HDR seems
to be very hard to produce. I think you've managed.

There's a kind of muted quality to the colors that again reminds me of
old hand tinted photographs.

Wow! I hadn't looked till now because I thought HDR apartments shot, meh.

But it's an oustanding image.

I'm having a bit of a problem with the mirror on the left and how it
can be reflecting what appears to be an image of something that must
be 90 degrees to it's left.
