Hi again Rick, the first one is the one I recall seeing from your original posting about the issue - IIRC you also experimented with white point etc. But it was good of you to answer since I was lacking the ambient light bit, around here it is all artificial so I'll walk a few paces to one of the backside canals. Cheers Ecke 2010/7/2 Rick Womer rwomer1...@yahoo.com: Ecke, I'm not sure what you mean by worst parameters. Here's an example, though: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=10151334 (ISO 1600, f/3.5 @ 1/3 sec) And another: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=9202604 (ISO 1600, f/4 @ 1/30) What these two photos share is ISO 1600 and natural dusk light. ISO 1600 pix taken in artificial light (e.g. downtown Chicago pix) don't have magenta concrete. I remember reading somewhere Hoyas have a bad rep for being hard to clean and so I broke out the lens cleaning liquid and a bunch of other stuff and the result was invariably a colorful smeary mess looking something like a wet oil stain in the street if you know what I mean. Tried helmet visor cleaning tissue next, eyeglass cleaning tissue, Olympus silicone impregnated lens cleaning parchment and everything I could think of. Same mess every time. So I quit and googled cleaning Hoya filters thinking, heck I'll ask PDML if I can't find anything. Sure enough the first result was http://www.hoyafilter.com/products/hoya/coatings.html where it says Never use any chemicals, such as lens cleaning fluid, on your filters, as these can damage the coatings. If any stubborn stains occur, these can usually be washed off with some clean water and a soft cotton cloth. Big OUCH, I had used all apparently suitable chemicals at my disposal... so I let it soak in water for a while, found a clean cotton kitchen towel and gently rubbed. Some came off, some didn't so I rubbed harder, figuring the filter was probably ruined anyway. But guess what, every single stain came off, there is no lint on the filter, no scratches, no cleaning marks no matter which way or side I hold it into the light, under a light or shine one across it. It looks absolutely like new. I can't find a single fault. BTW I bought the B+W to test the claim that the K10D's AA filter's IR suppression is weak and that the filter will prevent color casts (magenta concrete) in darker image areas. There won't be a newer Pentax for me in the near future so I have to squeeze the best out of what I have. If there is anything to report, I will pass it on, if you don't hear from me about this again I wasted a couple of Euros. I'm wondering about the feeling that you need to 'correct' for the stage lights. No one expects the lighting to look natural at shows. Don't worry about blowing individual channels. I agree with David. Trying to correct stage-color lighting is fruitless and near impossible. What's more, you'll lose too many stops with filtration. I frequently shoot AWB in that situation and tweak to my taste when converting the RAW. Sold a print at auction and didn't make a penny...
Well, it was a charity auction to which I donated the print, so not making any money myself is OK. Background: My S.O. Dr. Lisa and I are cycling in the Pan-Mass Challenge, a 180-mile bicycle ride (2 days) that raises money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Center, in a team with several of her co-workers from the hospital. Each member of the team is supposed to raise about $4200 in donations. A few weeks ago the Pathology Department chairman (he and his wife are on the team) put on a wine-tasting party and silent auction to raise money for the team. For the auction Lisa and I contributed a framed 12 x 18 print of one of my fungus photos (see the image at http://www.robertstech.com/pages/fungus02.htm) and a framed triptych of three of my Loire Valley shots (the three shots on the fourth row of this page: http://www.robertstech.com/loire.htm) The party was great fun and much less posh than I expected :) Though I preferred the Loire triptych, the fungus print ended up being the biggest money-getter of the evening: $1100.00! BTW: If any PDML'ers would care to contribute anything to my ride, my official ride page is at http://www.pmc.org/profile/MR0239 Five or ten bucks is fine. Any recommendations? I don't think your istDl is up to the fastest cards out there, I don't even think it will us an SDHC card, so pretty much any card 2gb or smaller will do. It may well be that you can use an SDHC card, but make sure you know before buying one. [2] When I look through the viewfinder without a lens installed, I see what look like flecks of dust here and there. Does that tell me anything about where they are? Is this something I can remedy or do I need competent technical help? You may just be seeing the nap of the focusing screen. If it is dust, it is on the screen. I am inclined for the time being, and possible for a long time, to use my camera as a manual camera. [I want to learn how to do photography.] I take from the above that I can use the manual lenses described above in this camera. We call it the Green Button Kludge. Set the camera to allow the use of non A lenses, then when you want to take a picture, you set the lens aperture and press the green button. The camera will stop down momentarily to the shooting aperture and take a meter reading. It will then set the shutter speed based on that reading. Any reactions to my wanting to go manual? Any suggestions for other useful, not too terribly expensive, manual lenses that I might consider, e.g., one that would be closer to being equivalent to a 50mm on a film camera? I shoot manual most of the time, if I'm not shooting manual I'm in no-mind automatic. You might want to find a 28mm lens. You need either an SD card or an SDHC card, the latter are more common now (all 4GB and up cards are SDHC). The latest firmware is required for SDHC compatibility so I'd recommend getting a 1-2GB SD card to start since you'll need that to do the firmware upgrade. Yes you can use manual lenses in stop-down mode once that custom function is set. You must be in M mode. The AE-Lock button will cause the camera to stop the lens down, take a meter reading and set the appropriate shutter speed based on the meter reading. The DoF preview will stop the lens down and give a meter reading but won't set the shutter speed. Any reactions to my wanting to go manual? Why do you Canadians still put up with those silly royals? As the grandson of peasants, the pretension to royalty or nobility really offends me. As the grandson of peasants, the pretension to royalty or nobility really offends me. Technically, the Queen forms a pivotal part of our government structure, in that her representative (the Governor General) can tell the Prime Minister to go pound sand. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way in reality, but I much prefer our method of bringing down a government that is running amok (the GG signing them out of power) than your way (assassinating unpopular presidents). I have appealed to the Queen (GG) myself when I felt I was being treated unfairly by Revenue Canada, and she made them go away. Consider the awesomeness of someone having that much power.. Re: *ist DL?
2010/7/2 Eric Weir eew...@bellsouth.net: My camera arrived today. It looks good. Very good. I haven't been able try it out, yet, other than checking out the manual and the menu options and settings. I could use some advice/feedback: Congrats =) Here we go as far as I get [1] I don't have a data card. Have never had a need for one. All I know is I need an SD card. I gather they come in flavors. Cost is a consideration. Any recommendations? SanDisk Ultra or Extreme series. 2 GB cards should be pretty cheap. Buy from amazon itself, not marketplace if you choose to go through them. There are lots of fake SanDisk cards out there. [2] When I look through the viewfinder without a lens installed, I see what look like flecks of dust here and there. Does that tell me anything about where they are? Is this something I can remedy or do I need competent technical help? Three possible places: a) on the mirror, you can see those by just looking into the body, b) more likely on the focusing screen, c) less likely in the prism (*ist-D/Ds/2) /mirror (*ist-DL/2) portion above the focusing screen. The dust will not show in your photos so it is a matter of choice. Any reactions to my wanting to go manual? Any suggestions for other useful, not too terribly expensive, manual lenses that I might consider, e.g., one that would be closer to being equivalent to a 50mm on a film camera? 31 mm or so would be the equivalent. the neighboring 28 and 35 were both pretty common focal lengths that should be available at a pretty low cost I know these are hugely naive and elementary questions, but I am naive and very, very much a beginner at this point. nothing wrong with that =) cheers ecke -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Thoughts on Trailing Curtain Sync
The K-10D and K-20D both allow you to set the on-board flash to trailing curtain sync. How difficult would it be for them to make the hot-shoe also fire on the trailing curtain when a non-dedicated flash is installed? E.G. like with a radio-sync transmitter or Vivitar 285HV? Dedicated flash like the AF-540FGZ has its own circuitry to talk to the camera and can be set to trailing curtain sync. Is this something they could do with a firmware update? Or is it something that would require radical hardware revision? For that matter what do the dedicated pins on the Pentax shoe tell the flash? I know what the big one in the center does, and it's obvious which one is ground. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
