I, too, like barns. The composition on the first one is good and it will be
well worth the visit on a day of better light. As it is, it might be worth
trying a toned monochrome look. This has rescued the odd barn shot for me.

The yellow crop looks like oilseed rape to me.

the first one is the one I recall seeing from your original posting

it was good of you to answer since I was lacking the ambient light

2010/7/2 Rick Womer rwomer1...@yahoo.com:
 Ecke,

I'm not sure what you mean by worst parameters.  Here's an example, though:

 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=10151334

 (ISO 1600, f/3.5 @ 1/3 sec)

 And another:

 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=9202604

 (ISO 1600, f/4 @ 1/30)

What these two photos share is ISO 1600 and natural dusk light.  ISO 1600 pix
taken in artificial light (e.g. downtown Chicago pix) don't have magenta
 concrete.

  today and
replaced the Hoya Pro1 Digital MRC UV filter used
 so far
  which despite
frequent old school cleaning - give it a good
 moist breath
  and wipe it

 spots and
  fingerprint
residue etc on it. I remember reading somewhere
 Hoyas have
  a bad rep

and a bunch of other stuff and the result was
 invariably a
  colorful
smeary mess looking something like a wet oil stain
 in the

you know what I mean. Tried helmet visor cleaning
 tissue
  next,
  eyeglass cleaning tissue, Olympus silicone
 impregnated lens
  cleaning
parchment and everything I could think of. Same
 mess every
  time.

So I quit and googled cleaning Hoya filters
 thinking,
  heck I'll ask
PDML if I can't find anything.

Sure enough the first result was
  http://www.hoyafilter.com/products/hoya/coatings.html
  where it says
Never use any chemicals, such as lens cleaning
 fluid, on
  your
filters, as these can damage the coatings. If any
 stubborn
  stains
occur, these can usually be washed off with some
 clean
  water and a
  soft cotton cloth.
Big OUCH, I had used all apparently suitable
 chemicals at
  my
disposal... so I let it soak in water for a while,
 found a
  clean
cotton kitchen towel and gently rubbed. Some came
 off, some
  didn't so
I rubbed harder, figuring the filter was probably
 ruined
  anyway. But
guess what, every single stain came off, there is
 no lint
  on the
filter, no scratches, no cleaning marks no matter
 which way
  or side I
hold it into the light, under a light or shine one
 across
  it. It looks
absolutely like new. I can't find a single fault.

BTW I bought the B+W to test the claim that the
 K10D's AA
  filter's IR
suppression is weak and that the filter will
 prevent color
  casts
(magenta concrete) in darker image areas. There
 won't be
  a newer
Pentax for me in the near future so I have to
 squeeze the
  best out of
what I have. If there is anything to report, I
 will pass it
  on, if you
don't hear from me about this again I wasted a
 couple of
  Euros.

Thanks, guys, for all your comments.

I live in New Jersey, the most crowded state in the US, about 35 miles
due west of Times Square. I live in a suburban town, between 20 acres
of Municipally-owned Green Acres woods and a small stream. so they
travel across my year every day. Our record is 33 deer at one time on

I, too, like barns. The composition on the first one is good and it will be
well worth the visit on a day of better light. As it is, it might be worth
trying a toned monochrome look. This has rescued the odd barn shot for me.

The yellow crop looks like oilseed rape to me.

I'm wondering about the feeling that you need to 'correct' for the
stage lights. No one expects the lighting to look natural at shows.
Don't worry about blowing individual channels. You are not shooting
under full spectrum conditions. If you are lucky, you get a spot on
the lead or whomever is doing the solo, and let the rest fall where it
will.

if I expose to not blow out the red channel, the blue and green channels end

I've been thinking of trying to slap some blue filters on my camera the next

I agree with David. Trying to correct stage-color lighting is
fruitless and near impossible. What's more, you'll lose too many stops

They do like my yard. I can't shoot them close to the house, but each
fall the township pays a hunting club to thin out the heard in the
municipally owned woods next to us. Two years ago, a buck shot by a
bow hunter staggered into our back yard and died. The gave us two
bottles of wine for the intrusion.

Sold a print at auction and didn't make a penny...

2010-07-02 Thread Mark Roberts
Well, it was a charity auction to which I donated the print, so not
making any money myself is OK.

Background: My S.O. Dr. Lisa and I are cycling in the Pan-Mass
Challenge, a 180-mile bicycle ride (2 days) that raises money for the
Dana-Farber Cancer Center, in a team with several of her co-workers
from the hospital. Each member of the team is supposed to raise about
$4200 in donations.

A few weeks ago the Pathology Department chairman (he and his wife are
on the team) put on a wine-tasting party and silent auction to raise
money for the team. For the auction Lisa and I contributed a framed 12
x 18 print of one of my fungus photos (see the image at
http://www.robertstech.com/pages/fungus02.htm) and a framed triptych
of three of my Loire Valley shots (the three shots on the fourth row
of this page: http://www.robertstech.com/loire.htm)

The party was great fun and much less posh than I expected :) Though I
preferred the Loire triptych, the fungus print ended up being the
biggest money-getter of the evening: $1100.00!

BTW: If any PDML'ers would care to contribute anything to my ride, my
official ride page is at http://www.pmc.org/profile/MR0239
Five or ten bucks is fine. You needn't feel obliged to donate $1100.00
;-)

That should help. Not as much as a 55mm f/2.8 would, if it were mounted on a

Even so, it's a very pretty photograph, and the only people that would comment
on it's lack of sharpness are persnickety pixel peeping photographers. Make a

Or go ahead and use it as an excuse to take the 21 there and get an even

learn something, I've found that nothing beats going out and failing miserably
on my own.

Don't worry about blowing individual channels. You are not shooting
under full spectrum conditions. If you are lucky, you get a spot on
the lead or whomever is doing the solo, and let the rest fall where it
 will.

No spot at this venue. This angle from behind the band shows the lights:

One of the places that I tend to shoot bands has the stage lit with about 4

if I expose to not blow out the red channel, the blue and green channels end
up about three stops under exposed, leaving me with 75% of my sensor sites
 way under.

I've been thinking of trying to slap some blue filters on my camera the next

smc pentax-m macro 1:4 100mm, and an albinar 1:2.8 135mm [the latter says
auto in the ring at the front of the lens, but there's no A on the aperture
ring.]

The manual says Only DA and FA J lenses and D FA/FA/F/A lenses having an A
position on the aperture ring can be used with this camera. But two pages
later it also says, When [Using aperture ring] is set to [2 Permitted] in [C
Custom] menu, the shutter can be released even if the aperture ring of the D
FA, FA, F, or A lens is not set to the A position or a lens without a A
position is attached. That is followed by a table show the features that are
available when the aperture is not set to A or lenses without A settings are
installed.

I am inclined for the time being, and possible for a long time, to use my
camera as a manual camera. [I want to learn how to do photography.] I take from
the above that I can use the manual lenses described above in this camera.

Any reactions to my wanting to go manual? Any suggestions for other useful, not
too terribly expensive, manual lenses that I might consider, e.g., one that
would be closer to being equivalent to a 50mm on a film camera?

I know these are hugely naive and elementary questions, but I am naive and
very, very much a beginner at this point.

Thanks,

My camera arrived today. It looks good. Very good. I haven't been able try

Any recommendations?

I don't think your istDl is up to the fastest cards out there, I don't even
think it will us an SDHC card, so pretty much any card 2gb or smaller will
do.
It may well be that you can use an SDHC card, but make sure you know before
buying one.

[2] When I look through the viewfinder without a lens installed, I see
what look like flecks of dust here and there. Does that tell me anything
about where they are? Is this something I can remedy or do I need
competent technical help?

You may just be seeing the nap of the focusing screen. If it is dust, it is
on the screen.

I would advise that you learn to live with it.
You can do a lot more harm trying to clean dust from the innards of a camera
than you will ever derive benefit from removing said dust.

[3] My only lenses at this point are manuals -- an smc pentax-m 1:1.7
50mm, an smc pentax-m macro 1:4 100mm, and an albinar 1:2.8 135mm [the
latter says auto in the ring at the front of the lens, but there's no
A on the aperture ring.]

If there is no A setting on the ring, it is not an A lens.

The manual says Only DA and FA J lenses and D FA/FA/F/A lenses having an
A position on the aperture ring can be used with this camera. But two

from the above that I can use the manual lenses described above in this
camera.

We call it the Green Button Kludge. Set the camera to allow the use of non
A lenses, then when you want to take a picture, you set the lens aperture
and press the green button. The camera will stop down momentarily to the
shooting aperture and take a meter reading. It will then set the shutter
speed based on that reading.

Any reactions to my wanting to go manual? Any suggestions for other
useful, not too terribly expensive, manual lenses that I might consider,
e.g., one that would be closer to being equivalent to a 50mm on a film
camera?

I shoot manual most of the time, if I'm not shooting manual I'm in no-mind
automatic.
You might want to find a 28mm lens. They should be a dime a dozen and are
very close to being a normal lens on the APS-C format digitals.

You need either an SD card or an SDHC card, the latter are more common
now (all 4GB and up cards are SDHC). The latest firmware is required
for SDHC compatibility so I'd recommend getting a 1-2GB SD card to
start since you'll need that to do the firmware upgrade.

Yes you can use manual lenses in stop-down mode once that custom
function is set. You must be in M mode. The AE-Lock button will cause
the camera to stop the lens down, take a meter reading and set the
appropriate shutter speed based on the meter reading. The DoF preview
will stop the lens down and give a meter reading but won't set the
shutter speed.

Any reactions to my wanting to go manual? Any suggestions for other useful,

 Thanks,

Decent normal options are an issue. A 35mm lens will give a field of
view very similar to 50mm lenses on 35mm film cameras. The downside is
that 35mm lenses aren't all that cheap unless you're willing to deal
with a slow one.

It's supply and demand.
Most autofocus cameras (film before digital) were sold as kits with
zoom lenses. You had to do a special purchase to get a fixedfocal
length lens.
You might want to try a cheap non-Pentax auto-focus zoom to start.

Technically, the Queen forms a pivotal part of our government structure, in
that her representative (the Governor General) can tell the Prime Minister
to go pound sand.
Unfortunately it doesn't work that way in reality, but I much prefer our
method of bringing down a government that is running amok (the GG signing
them out of power) than your way (assassinating unpopular presidents).
I have appealed to the Queen (GG) myself when I felt I was being treated
unfairly by Revenue Canada, and she made them go away.

Consider the awesomeness of someone having that much power..

the focusing screen. The dust will not show in your photos so it is a
matter of choice.

Any reactions to my wanting to go manual? Any suggestions for other useful,
not too terribly expensive, manual lenses that I might consider, e.g., one
that would be closer to being equivalent to a 50mm on a film camera?

31 mm or so would be the equivalent. the neighboring 28 and 35 were
both pretty common focal lengths that should be available at a pretty
low cost

I know these are hugely naive and elementary questions, but I am naive and
very, very much a beginner at this point.

nothing wrong with that =)
cheers

Thoughts on Trailing Curtain Sync

2010-07-02 Thread John Sessoms
The K-10D and K-20D both allow you to set the on-board flash to trailing
curtain sync. How difficult would it be for them to make the hot-shoe
also fire on the trailing curtain when a non-dedicated flash is
installed?

E.G. like with a radio-sync transmitter or Vivitar 285HV? Dedicated
flash like the AF-540FGZ has its own circuitry to talk to the camera and
can be set to trailing curtain sync.

Is this something they could do with a firmware update?

Or is it something that would require radical hardware revision?

For that matter what do the dedicated pins on the Pentax shoe tell the
flash? I know what the big one in the center does, and it's obvious
which one is ground.

Re: OT help with computer stuff desperate annsan

2010-07-02 Thread eckinator
hi christine, hi ann (if you're reading this)
if ann can do the following
a) click on a link in an offlist mail
b) choose to save and then run the download
c) open calculator from start - programs - accessories
d) compose by clicking an 8 digit number in calculator
e) in the edit menu click copy
f) go to the program downloaded and launched in step b)
g) right-click into the session number field and in the context menu
click insert
then i will be able to connect to her computer and see if i can
identify the cause of the problem
so: ladies, are you still in the loop?
cheers

Subject: OT help with computer stuff desperate annsan

hi guys, here's the problem: i am on a friend's computer at the moment
because my keyboard is nonfunctional not because of the physical keyboard
but because of serious USB 2 port difficulties. if anybody is around and can
stand talking to me today and walking me through some checks over the phone,
i'd really appreciate it. i can't do a thing on the computer without the
keyboard, sob sob. any help, any time, send me your phone number and i'll
call you on my cell phone. unless of course you're in europe. i can read my
mail with no problem but i can't input any responses. thanks much in
advance. i miss you guys but it's been hell here.

 ann
