RE: Advice solicitation for analog shooting

2011-02-12 Thread John Coyle
Walt, the Plus-X should be fine. When I first started using it, I lived on
a tropical island where supplies arrived by boat every three months at
minimum, and the films then stayed unrefrigerated until used. Never had an
issue with it! Heat can foul it up, but it has to be something like leaving
the film in the glove box of your car while it is in the sun (which I will
confess to having done when young and unaware!).

I just happened to notice last night, after I sent this message, that
the Plus-X wasn't C-41 process film. I think the shop where I bought it
will process it, though.

I still don't have a dark room or supplies -- nor a tank or dark bag -- to
work with, so I'll have to have all my film processed for the time being.
But, once I get to the point where I feel I can get enough good shots with
film to justify the investment, I'll probably start doing my own
development.

BTW -- I did note that the date stamp on the Plus-X box is 01/2010. I
assume that's the expiration date and not the date of manufacture. With
that in mind, I can't help wondering if it's still worth shooting. The shop
had it on a shelf, not refrigerated at all. I assume there's some leeway
with the expiration dates, but a year sounds a bit much.

Thanks for the pointers WRT the developing chemicals. I'll archive this
email for use at a later date.

Hi Walt - I used to use Plus-X extensively, and always developed it
myself in Acutol or Microdol-X. Acutol gives very fine grain and high
acutance (as the name implies) with lovely smooth tone gradation.
Microdol-X is designed to give very sharp negatives, perhaps a little
more grain and contrast than Acutol. I normally rated it at 200ASA,
but it's worth testing a roll or two with your own gear to see what
suits you best. To save film, you could expose half-dozen frames on a
roll at 80, 125 and 200 ASA for each set , then develop the roll normally
to see which works best.
You can push Plus-X quite hard, but the quality begins to drop off at
 over 400ASA, I found.

I never much liked 400CN, couldn't seem to get really black and white
negs, always a little tinge of colour left.

Haven't used UltraMax, so can't help you there!

So, I now have this K1000 and a decent array of lenses to use on it.
Having finally figured out how to properly operate the camera after
wasting one roll of Fuji Superia X-tra 400 due to the fact that I
opened the back of the camera prematurely thinking I had it completely
wound (didn't realize I had to press the button on the bottom plate),
and nearly wasting a roll of Kodak Plus-X 125 by not properly affixing
it to the advance mechanism (didn't securely set the notches onto the
teeth), I think it's time I ask for a little guidance before I proceed any
further.

I have three different types of film and thought I'd ask the
experienced film shooters if there's anything I can do to get better
 images out of them
-- any quirks or characteristics I should be mindful of, or specific
uses or conditions any of them particularly excel at. I have the
following:

 2 rolls Plus-X 125
 3 rolls BW400CN
 4 rolls UltraMax 400

What do I need to know from here?

 Thanks!

 Walt

 Hi Everyone:

Many on PDML have probably read this book, but for those who haven't, I
heartily recommend a read. I liked it so much that tonight I'm going
 to
start reading it again because I'm unwilling to say good by to the
larger-than-life photographers or end the adventure.

Before reading the book I knew little about Magnum. Of course, I had
 heard
of Magnum, but not much else---I knew little of the in-house tensions,
disagreements, both the positive and negative working dynamics,
personalities, original mission, philosophical differences, financial
struggles et al. The first part of the book does a wonderful job of
rendering Robert Capa, whom I didn't know much about--wow! what a guy!
What a fascinating human being. In the beginning he truly was the
 heart and
 soul of Magnum.

Anyway, I highly recommend a read. *Magnum: 50 Years at the Front
 Line of

RE: Photograph aspect ratios

2011-02-12 Thread Bob W

Following the link posted by Liz, I came across another short article
(blogpost?) on about.com written by her,
 http://photography.about.com/od/developingandprinting/qt/ImageFormats.h
 tm

I liked the subject: I thought it was the first time that I've seen
somebody discussing different aspect ratios of the prints of different
standard sizes and the planning needed for that.

We have discussed it here before. Not often, but occasionally and mostly
related to the question of why people crop their photos to fit paper sizes,
rather than cropping the paper to fit the photo.

I've discussed briefly a related question earlier here, on PDML, in
 some
comments that I personally tend to favor two aspect ratios : 2:3 and
 1:1
 (aka 6x6 :-) ).

I use whatever the sensor / film uses, so 2:3 and 4:3. However, since I've
had Lightroom I have cropped photos to either 1:1 or 2:1, mainly when I've
photographed them with that in mind.

With the Leica M8 the framelines are so inaccurate that you're almost forced
to crop to get the framing you used at shutter release time.

[...]

I also would challenge this statement:
Many cameras today record photographs in roughly a 3:2 ratio. This
means that the long side is 1.5 times as long as the short side. This
 is
the reason 4x6 has become a popular print size.
I believe the reason (or to be exact, one of the main reasons) why 4x6
has become a popular print size is that the negative size on the 35mm
film was 24x36mm, which has the same aspect ratio.

I believe the reason why the size 4x6, as opposed to the aspect ratio 2:3,
is popular has more to do with viewing distance. Harald Mante writes about
this in his excellent book Photo Design:

In looking at a picture, the viewing distance from the eyes should be twice
the length of the diagonal of the picture. Since the normal reading distance
is from 12 to 16 inches, the ideal size for a photograph [...] would be from
3.5 x 4.75 in. (diagonal about 6 in.) to 4.5x6.25 (diagonal 8 in). [...]
Pictures which are too small become mere spots: if too large [...] they are
for the most part examined only in detail, because it may become
impracticable to view them at the requisite distance..

People should also take this into account when posting pictures to the web,
but of course it's difficult to come up with the best viewing distance.
Average arm's length is normally claimed, but it varies with age. If we
settle on 25 then the picture diagonal should be about 12 and the 2:3
sides about 6x9

http://www.ankrumassociates.com/articles/viewing-distance-at-computer-works
tations.html

And that brings me round to one of my pet hates, which is oversized picture
books, especially photography books. They print the photographs far too
large for comfortable viewing.

I discourage my print customers from ordering 8 x 10s of my photos, and instead
urge them to go with 8 x 12s, since I shoot to that ratio. Most good framing
and photo stores now have pre-cut 8 x 12 mats that are 11 x 14 on the outside.
I find these perfect for framing in 11 x 14 frames. I nver frame a print

 I usually ordered prints in those ratios (4x6, 10cmx15cm, 20cm x 30 cm,
8x12, etc.), and then it was sometimes harder to find a premanufactured
(read: inexpensive) frame for 8x12, as 8x10 were more popular.

Once I started printing my own photos with Epson R2880, I found that
it is harder to do 8x12 prints, as the paper usually doesn't
come in that size. So, every so often, I am trying to fit my 2:3 photo
to 8x10 or 8.5x11 (Letter) formats.
The same problem was (and is) occuring with 5x7 (aka 13cmx18cm) prints,
 - but at least it is much closer to the 2:3 ratio, so it is not as
 difficult to do the crop.

After doing a search, I found that there were some people complaining
about this issue earlier, e.g. here:

I thought I'd share these with the PDMLers.

Also, I hope Liz won't be too mad at me for criticizing her posting.
I realize that the audience of about.com is mostly non-technical,
 but still ...

First of all, I was surprised not seeing 8x12 and 3.5x5 among the
 standard print sizes.

Second, the squarest ratio is 1:1! And that's been on the market for
ages (albeit it's becoming less frequent, and may one day die).

Third, the multiplication factor and the ratio (in the particular
order of sides) are the same thing. So, the sentence It is often easier
to think in terms of the length multiplication factors instead of the
actual ratios. sounds weird. What it actually says is it is easier to use
decimal numbers (decimal fractions) then [non-decimal] fractions.

Fourth, I don't understand why 3.5:2.5 ratio is chosen for 5x7 prints
(except that the size 3.5x2.5 is also considered to be one of the
 standard, - wallet, sizes).
It's a bit weird to translate a ratio of simple numbers to a ratio of decimal
 non-intengers...

Re: Photograph aspect ratios

2011-02-12 Thread Paul Stenquist
In regard to paper, when printing 8 x 12 images or crops close to that size, I
print two on a sheet of 13 x 19 paper. I use only 13 x 19 paper, and simply cut
out the prints, if they're not sized to use the full sheet. Like Bob, I don't
always crop to a standard size. But for photos that are intended for sale, it's
much more economical to buy pre-cut mats than to have custom mats cut, so I
tend to plan ahead and shoot to a standard size.

RE: Photograph aspect ratios

From: Bob W

Following the link posted by Liz, I came across another short article
(blogpost?) on about.com written by her,
 http://photography.about.com/od/developingandprinting/qt/ImageFormats.h
 tm

I liked the subject: I thought it was the first time that I've seen
somebody discussing different aspect ratios of the prints of different
standard sizes and the planning needed for that.

We have discussed it here before. Not often, but occasionally and mostly
related to the question of why people crop their photos to fit paper sizes,
rather than cropping the paper to fit the photo.

I blame it on the high media costs associated with ink-jet printers.

I bought a Logan mat cutter that handles standard 40 mat board. Now all
my mats are custom, though I still use off-the-shelf frames.

I found it only takes about $10 of wasted board to master the cutter. :-)

The advantages are: print shots to whatever size and aspect ratio I want
(I don't own a printer and the service I use prints on continuous
roll-paper); produce more interesting mats (for example, by using
black-core board); my mats are about 1/4 the cost of off-the-shelf.

I find these perfect for framing in 11 x 14 frames. I nver frame a print

I never frame a print without a mat either... well, almost never, it
aint good for the print but if it is just for me I sometimes do.

I believe the reason (or to be exact, one of the main reasons) why 4x6
has become a popular print size is that the negative size on the 35mm

film was 24x36mm, which has the same aspect ratio.

Yup -- Though it could be a chicken/egg thing here, no?

More over, most sensor sizes (except those of DSLRs) are 4:3:

One of the reasons I'm happily back with Pentax gear is the aspect ratio
- as I shot
with that ratio for a good 40 years before brief lapse in to the dark
side. (All though I still

have a point and shot with the 4:3) But...

In terms of printing... I never print any photos to the edge of the
paper.. and the aspect ratio
of any photo I print is what looks best to my eye for the subject at
hand or to crop out distracrting
elements... I like to see a wide border around my photos and also for
handling them one never touches the
surface of the image. Matting is much easier if the paper you printed
on gives you a bit of an edge to handle
and use for securing the print to the back mat.

Re: Photograph aspect ratios

2011-02-12 Thread John Sessoms

On 11-02-12 7:03 AM, Paul Stenquist wrote:

In regard to paper, when printing 8 x 12 images or crops close to
that size, I print two on a sheet of 13 x 19 paper. I use only 13
x 19 paper, and simply cut out the prints, if they're not sized
to use the full sheet. Like Bob, I don't always crop to a
standard size. But for photos that are intended for sale, it's
much more economical to buy pre-cut mats than to have custom mats
cut, so I tend to plan ahead and shoot to a standard size.

Paul

I bought a Logan mat cutter that handles standard 40 mat board. Now
all my mats are custom, though I still use off-the-shelf frames.

http://www.logangraphic.com/products/boardmounted/intermediate.shtml

I found it only takes about $10 of wasted board to master the cutter.
:-)

The advantages are: print shots to whatever size and aspect ratio I
want (I don't own a printer and the service I use prints on
continuous roll-paper); produce more interesting mats (for example,
by using black-core board); my mats are about 1/4 the cost of
off-the-shelf.

I also use the Logan mat cutter and a friend pointed me towards a nice
little program to use with it; Matworks by Giorgio Trucco. I think I've
mentioned it here before.

http://www.gt-photography.com/matworks.html

It's a fairly simple, intuitive interface and gives you the settings you
need for the mat cutter to produce the opening you want. Plug the
numbers in click calculate.

Gives you dimensions for back mat, single mat, double mat ...
centered, bottom weighted double bottom weighted. Printable so you can
tape a diagram to the wall above the mat cutter.

It gives dimensions for everything in decimal fractions of an inch, but
there's a conversion table in the interface.

Jeffery

Jeffrey - it would come up in Firefox if I were not using old netscape
commuicator email
which I prefer --- If I read my mail on the web, before downloading it
, then all I'd have to do is click.

The old gang here knows I have Netscape 7.0 and use plain text only for
email... it is the perfect tool
for me to keep track of things and sort and is especially safe as I
never leave email on my web ISP.

In short, it is nothing to do with Firefox..

I really would recommend taking a look at Mozilla Thunderbird as an
email client to replace Netscape. I don't think Netscape 7.0 has had a
security update since 2003. Certainly not since 2008 when AOL pulled the
plug on Netscape.

Essentially Mozilla took the old Netscape program and split it into
separate applications; Firefox for browsing the web Thunderbird for
email. I think Thunderbird should give you the look feel of the old
Netscape email client, but with the benefit of security updates.

Thunderbird duplicates the look, feel function of the email portion of
the old Netscape program. I was running Netscape 7.2 on this computer in
2007 when I decided to give Firefox/Thunderbird a try on my new Toshiba
laptop. That's when I quit using this computer for a while.

When I put this computer back into operation in January of this year it
still had Netscape 7.2 set up on it. Switching over to
Firefox/Thunderbird was fairly easy.

The only problem I ran into was I made the mistake of running Windows
add/remove programs to uninstall Netscape before installing
Firefox/Thunderbird, which slightly complicated importing bookmarks
address books. Fortunately I had not yet emptied the trash folder the
installers were able to retrieve my bookmarks address books from there.

From recent personal experience, I can say it's not any more difficult
to set up Thunderbird to send only plain text email than it was to
figure out how to make Netscape do so.

Not bad at all. I like the angle of the head and the way he's got his
wings pushed out a bit. The big plus is that it's the perfect ID shot
