I think the M6 with film in it is subjectively a hair quieter than the other three, as someone mentioned in the thread you pointed to, but all of them are quiet enough that most people will hardly notice in any normal room's ambient noise. The M8 (vertical travel metal shutter) has a slightly more metallic click than the M6 (horizontal travel rubberized cloth shutter). The E-1 and K5 both have a vertical travel metal shutter and both have a very restrained click, the E-1 seems just slightly softer on the mirror return noise. But they're all very quiet cameras, the E-1 and K5 particularly so for being SLRs. -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Or maybe Mr. Creosote just had a bit too much for lunch again? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPkOv0-u6A0 Apologies in advance... There is no doubt a bomb was deliberately detonated in the area of Oslo where the Prime Minister's offices are located. Nor is there any question a gunman opened fire on a youth camp sponsored by the Prime Minister's political party. Those are both prima facie terrorist acts. No assumption necessary. I think you may mean we automatically assume the terrorist is motivated by Islamic fundamentalism. As yet, the authorities in Norway are being careful not to accuse any specific ideology, although they have announced two suspects are in custody. I have just now seen a report that a group identifying itself as Helpers of Global Jihad has claimed responsibility. How truly representative of Islam they are is open to question. My real concern is the inevitable loss of freedom Norwegians will suffer as a result of the increased security this necessitates. For that, I do blame the terrorist. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I've tried changing my options to display international characters, but it's not working. Anyone have hints how I might do this? the answer depends on your email client (or browser, for webmail), your OS and what fonts you have installed ... Email client is Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.11 on Windoze XP. I'm guessing what fonts you have installed means whether or not the fonts on my system include the extended characters I'm not seeing. Looking at my fonts using Windows Character Map, the characters are there. Or is the list server somehow stripping them out? the listserv is handling the emails correctly -- passing along the encoding of the original email, which varies according to the sender; without specifics, it's hard to know specifically what's bollixing for your, but a quick sample shows the following encodings in emails on this list: us-ascii -- (the majority) used in your email and surprisingly used by most of the non-US members; this encoding lacks any accented characters or non-typewriter punctuation (such as curly quotes) utf-8 -- used in my email and a few others, huge character set iso-8859-1 -- ASCII variant with a lot of Latin accented characters windows-1252 -- superset of iso-8859-1 with more Latin accented characters if an email is sent with the proper encoding, and your system properly interprets that encoding and uses fonts with glyphs that cover all the characters used in the email, then you should never see the '?' indications; otoh, an email may be sent in an encoding which doesn't cover some characters in the email, yet some systems may be smart enough to still display the intended glyphs; for example the modern recommendation when receiving iso-8859-1 is to assume it is windows-1252 ToolsOptionsDisplay: Default font is Arial Advanced options: Fonts for: Western Proportional: Sans Serif Serif: Times New Roman Sans-serif: Arial Monospace: Courier New Font Control: Allow messages to use other fonts Use fixed width font for plain text messages both checked. Character Encodings: Outgoing Mail: Western (ISO-8859-1) Incoming Mail: Unicode (UTF-16) I already tried UTF-8, but I still get the '?' in place of European characters, so I thought I'd try UTF-16 to get the larger character set. It's still giving me the '?'. I'll switch incoming mail to Windows-1252 and see if that will work. What I'm NOT seeing are characters like the slashed capital 'O' in Scandinavian names whatever character was in the middle of the discussion of variants of McAllister that came out M??r. None of this is any world shaking problem, but I would like to fix it. Like I said elsewhere, I think according to some definitions, political goals must be involved for the acts to be defined as terrorism, i.e. if someone did it just because they were raving mad, it's not strictly speaking terrorism, even though that acts are the same, and just as terrible (and terrifying) in their own right... But I suppose there isn't really one definition of terrorism that everyone agrees on. Incidentally, the explosion immediately reminded me of the one in the City of London in 1993 - a time when what many people assumed was that a terrorist had to be Irish... As yet, the authorities in Norway are being careful not to accuse any specific ideology, although they have announced two suspects are in custody. I have just now seen a report that a group identifying itself as Helpers of Global Jihad has claimed responsibility. How truly representative of Islam they are is open to question. It's also not unheard of that extremist organisations have claimed responsibility for acts they had absolutely nothing to do with, I believe... My real concern is the inevitable loss of freedom Norwegians will suffer as a result of the increased security this necessitates. For that, I do blame the terrorist. It's still giving me the '?'. i thought i had set outgoing to utf-8 but i now see ISO-8859-1 -- maybe a crash or update changed my setting; i have ignored the incoming setting, thinking it to only apply when no encoding is specified (and in such cases UTF-16 is unlikely to work well) also note the menu: View Character Encoding, particularly whether Auto-detect is on; i believe you can change these on the fly while viewing a message What I'm NOT seeing are characters like the slashed capital 'O' in Scandinavian names i do see the correct character in Tim's emails in his From header; but header encoding is handled differently from the message body -- in this case the literal text of the From header contains an escape indicating it is UTF-8 encoded, even though his message body is encoded as us-ascii whatever character was in the middle of the discussion of variants of McAllister that came out M??r. that latter was a pair of Unicode characters, a superscript c merged with almost equals, but glyphs for these characters are missing from many fonts, and it implies a system that can handle Unicode combining characters; i have no idea if that works on XP None of this is any world shaking problem, but I would like to fix it. It's actually the little things that irritate me the most. i suspect it's down to the font choice in Tbird and/or XP -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: I'm ok
Political correctness makes it impossible to be precise. Terrorism is a tactic. It makes no sense to wage war on a tactic. Doing so makes us forget than while there are a number of different groups and individuals that are willing to use that tactic to try to achieve their ends. The current suspect may in fact be a Nordic male, with an extremist group from either the far right or the far left, or a disgruntled tax payer, maybe even a real anarchist, a group that is entirely off the scale, (modern anarchists are much to organized to merit the name). Anyway I'm expecting that whatever the motivation for this little act of barbarism, it's probably not what the major news organizations are pushing right now, and when truth is known they will not acknowledge the fact and keep pushing their current tripe, or change to the new information never acknowledging that their speculations were wrong. Right now I'm just glad that the people I know in Norway are alright. I've always seen Norwegians as being pretty good people, going about their business in the best traditions of Western Civilization, trying to the the right thing. They don't deserve this, but then so few really do. I recall under similar circumstances a retreat to the basement in our home in Wellesley in the 50s, where we were met with damp chill air, but for that relief you had to put up with air that rusted a chisel in just a few days. And of course the drip drip drip of the condensation off the cast iron water pipes running over head. None the less, that's where mother sat in a lounge chair until it was time to cook dinner. Father had to have his dinner ready at 6 pm every night. I would set the step-ladder up underneath the hatch to the attic. Pushed the hatch up and out of the way, and pulled the eye-hook routed string hanging down through the open hatch to suck the remainder of that cool air from the basement into the rest of the house through the cracks in the cellar doors. The air handler was a belt driven 48 industrial fan set in a crude homemade wind tunnel, sealed to prevent air from being sucked in from outdoors, blowing out the attic window at the front of the two story house. The fan was driven by a 2 HP electric motor that made the belt squeal for 10 seconds when turned on. Eventually the solid wood hatch was replaced in the summer with a screen frame with a slot for the string. Saved time, and allowed mother to turn the fan on any time she pleased. The wood hatch was insulated by glueing styrofoam blocks on to the upper side for the winters. By bedtime you could open the windows downstairs and in the upstairs bedrooms. Frugal father would creep out of bed and turn the fan off after he thought we were all asleep. Hah! Too damn hot to sleep! Either I or mother would creep out a few minutes later to turn that fan back on. We explained to father when he complained, that it took more electricity for us to turn the fan back on than if he had left it on in the first place, so leave it on! My brain seems to roll back through those memories more often these days. Thanks for the memories Mark! On Jul 22, 2011, at 12:42 , Mark Roberts wrote: ... Re: Oslo blast
Jostein and Tim, I'm sad to hear the death toll in your incidents is at least 87, 7 from the bombing and another 80 teenagers on the island. What a sick wacko it takes to do this. You have my condolences. Regards, Bob S. Nothing points in that direction at the moment. He may not be aware of the second incident here today. A shooting desperado with a machine gun and dressed as a policeman went bananas in a youth camp on a small island. Police strongly suspects the two incidents are connected. The desperado, however, is 190 cm tall, of athletic build and with light blonde hair and nordic appearance. Not your typical islamic extremist, nor any self-exploding apparition from outer space as Darren seems to imagine. We will know more in a couple of hours, or maybe in a couple of days. The desperado has been detained alive. Thanks all of you, for your concern for us up here in the Frostpit. Re: K5 quieter than a Leica
How does the M6 sound when you advance the film? -T On Fri, Jul 22, 2011 at 7:47 AM, Godfrey DiGiorgi gdigio...@gmail.com wrote: On Fri, Jul 22, 2011 at 7:29 AM, Paul Stenquist pnstenqu...@comcast.net wrote: At lest according to this guy's testing: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103766 Someone at the camera shop happened to be there with a K5 when I was there with the Olympus E-1 and they had an M6 and an M8 on display. So I got to hear all three next to one another. Jury's out on absolute volume ... My ear is not a decibel meter! ... but all four are very quiet and have a very nice quality sound too. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
