Re: I'm ok and Re: Oslo Blast
Those of you in Norway are surely in shock. I just watched the 9 am Norway time news conference by the police. The number of dead on Utoya island was raised to 84. In downtown Oslo it is still 7 deceased. They also warned that the investigation would take months. They state the horrific crimes are attributable to the one man, a local freemason who has never been on the police radar. Central Oslo is coming under the control of the military, to allow the police to investigate without interruption and to prevent looting. They are still searching the waters around Utoya, as many tried to escape by swimming away, knowing there was no way they could reach land elsewhere. One man swam away without removing his clothes or shoes first. He was forced to turn back and go ashore before he sank and drowned. The gunman walked up to him and shot him. But he survived and was interviewed. His timeline was reported as at least one hour before the police arrived, and another hour until the shooting stopped when the gunman was tracked down and arrested by a Delta Force team. They recovered a machine gun they declined to identify. AK-47 certainly comes to mind. Lightroom 1.4.1 upgrade (catalog) to version 3 ?
Hi all, I have been using Lightroom version 1 for several years now, and consider upgrading for the new features in verion 3. (like perspective correction and localized edits) However, I am still on OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) so I will have to upgrade that to 10.6 (Snow Leopard) first, and then perhaps even to the latest (Lion) that was released a few days ago ... What I could not find so far, is if LR 3 will convert a version-1 catalog to the current level. There is lot of info about converting 2 to 3, and older info about 1 to 2. Anyone know for sure if direct upgrading from 1.4.1 to 3.x will work well ? Re: Memory card and card reader problem
The only thing to do is to try the bad card in a different device, which you did already, by using the *ist-D. If it were recoverable by other than superhuman efforts the *ist-D would have either recognized the card, and read it normally or asked if you wanted to format it, or formatted it without asking, (yes, it does that sometimes). CF cards have their own controller much like any other memory device. If that's cooked the data may still be there but recovery would be very expensive. One way to see if your card reader might still be good would be to plug it into the USB port and use the Icon on your menu bar that accesses USB devices available on your computer, (and allows you to safely remove them). If you double click it you'll get a dialog that shows all USB drives and the drive letter assigned to them. If you see the Vivitar reader in the list then you have a pretty good idea that the reader is good. CF cards do fail, could be that it's time had just come. PESO - Base Hit
This is a re-do of the first pic of my recent Boys of Summer GESO: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/boys-of-summer.html I really liked that first pic, but there was something just not right. How do we alter the human condition for the better if we hide the parts of the condition that can be improved on from the light of day? William Robb Has the human condition improved since the invention of photography or worsened? Not making a correlation at all. Just food for thought. photography photographers have no more (or less) obligation to change the world than any other activity or practitioners. In the context of art, which is where the discussion began, people can photograph anything they want, and they don't have to justify it except by the resulting work itself (it should be good, in some way which I can't define). In the context of journalism, or documentary or reportage or whatever, it should be news. That's all. In the context of travel photography it should tell you something about the place. I had an argument in India with a Brahmin who tried to stop me photographing beggars outside the Jaganarth temple in Puri, and wanted me to photograph only the beautiful parts of India. Bloody idiot. In the context of advocacy or campaigning, it should be effective. Re: PESO - Base Hit
Like it much better, Frank. One reason is the enlarged facial/eye expression of the hitter. Did notice that the catcher is looking higher, but that's likely due to his not having yet found the ball. Never without MY idea, I down loaded it and cropped even more off the right side. I cropped the ump to just about mid arm at his elbow, thus leaving his arm in one continuous piece. Wide angle lens question
Hello I've re-subscribed here after a couple of years away. I would appreciate any input from you. I'm looking to replace 2 lenses with 1, for simplicity. I'm doing a lot of shooting at construction projects and I don't like to change lenses with lots of sawdust, dirt, etc. flying around. I am currently using a Pentax FA28-70 f4 and a Sigma 17-35 F2.8. I would like to get a single lens that covers this same range; 17-70-ish. I'd like something a bit better than the consumer-grade and hopefully in the $300 to $400 range. What suggestions can you give me? Re: Lightroom 1.4.1 upgrade (catalog) to version 3 ?

What I could not find so far, is if LR 3 will convert a version-1 catalog to the current level. There is lot of info about converting 2 to 3, and older info about 1 to 2. Anyone know for sure if direct upgrading from 1.4.1 to 3.x will work well ? I'm not sure, but I believe so. I will vouch that LR 3 is a huge improvement over LR1. Re: Wide angle lens question
There are two that I know of that fit that bill. The Pentax DA 17-70mm f4.0 (reviewed at photozone http://www.photozone.de/pentax/408-pentax_1770_4 ), and the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8~4.5, (also reviewed at photozone http://www.photozone.de/pentax/147-sigma-af-17-70mm-f28-45-dc-pentax-k-review--test-report). I've been looking for a good price on one for some time. The Pentax is about $490.00 at BH Photo and the Sigma for K mount is about twenty dollars less at Adorama. It's probably best if you read the reviews yourself. I know someone on the list has used the Pentax so they'll probably chime in. Re: Memory card and card reader problem
It could simply be a problem of the drives being screwed up. The system regestery can end up pointing two different device drives at the same port, which might keep either driver from working properly. In the control panel open the system dialog, and switch to the hardware tab. There should be a button labeled hardware, to open the device manager. Check to see if you have any yellow question marks displayed. On 7/23/2011 4:33 PM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: Looks like it is the USB port... computer doesnt seem to know it is there. Re: Memory card and card reader problem
The first thing to try is delete the driver from the system and hope that it re-installs correctly. Click on the Item with the question mark to expand the branch if it isn't. Then right click on highest item in branch with the question mark, and from the context menu select delete item. A dialog asking if you want to reboot will appear, if there are no more question marks then yes you do. Otherwise repeat until there are no more question items. Then let the system reboot and find new hardware. With luck you won't have to do anything else. After lots of hemmming and hawing, I decided to drop the spectator on the left. I'd first left him in there as his eyes seemed to be following the hit baseball into the outfield. But the more I thought about it, I realized that the eyes of the young hitter (and that wonderful expression on his face just after he smacked the line drive) were all I needed - the spectator was just a distraction. By cropping him out, it brings the three at the plate (especially the hitter) into focus. At least I think so. What think you? http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/base-hit.html I think that it's a huge improvement. The crop has everything necessary in the photo, and nothing that isn't. Your comments and suggestions will be welcome. Re: PESO: Bandit
Well, he has big paws, but not as big as George's! Bandit is an Alaskan Malamute, and should weigh 85-90 pounds when fully grown. He has become quite a lap dog, and I shudder to think what that will mean a year from now. Dan Dan Matyola http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/danieljmatyola On Sat, Jul 23, 2011 at 8:48 PM, P. J.
