Re: OT: Good news, bad news
Sounds like they were quoting from the Product literature in describing that equipment. A more perhaps realistic assessment can be found in the reviews on bhphotovideo's site. Example: - - - Am getting fairly experienced with this scanner now that I have had it for two months Here's what I've figured out so far. 1] Universal Slide Tray is the only way to go...only problem is Pacific Image can't keep them in stock...this is the only tray that will not jam...the below mentioned 100 slide carousels jam like crazy...the supplied 50 slide tray jams almost as much, though not quite...as above, the Universal Tray is the only one to use. 2] Annoys the hel out of me when scanning hundreds of slides and the auto crop feature misfires and scans way way way more than your slide image..so you have to crop that crab out of their in the post scanning processI'd pay somebody a million dollars if they could solve this issue for meHelp with the Auto Crop...anybody out there have any suggestions... 3] As others have noted...after about 130 scans or so, the scanner just stopsthat would be bad enough, but it gets worse...the only way you can get it going again is to de-power it..and have it reboot itself...this takes the better part of five minutes...and then you loose you place in the process...so you've got to do a test preview or two..to be sure you have the next slide in the sequence cued up...to be sure you don't either duplicate the last slide scanned or to make sure you don't skip the next slide to scan...this will also annoy the hel out of you... As you can tell, like most of us...I have thousands of slides to scan..so #2 and #3 above are real issues If anybody out there can assist...please post... Finally, I am scanning at 720dpi (a compromise of my time)...and I can do 50 slides in 22 minutes..but then I've got to re-crop 10 of them .. for an additional time issue... - - - end of review Interesting too is the fact that this model is no longer available. The 5000 would seem to be the equiv. new model: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/762308-REG/Pacific_Image_PS5000_PowerSlide_3650_Slides_Scanner.html Darren Addy Kearney, Nebraska -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The DMax of 3.8 is not stellar either, but for the money compromises need to be made. Re: OT: Good news, bad news
Though not in actuality, but in spirit, we are a Pentax Camera Club. As such, I propose that as many of us that have copious slides to scan pool our funds, buy the thing, pay the $179 for a three year warranty, pool our Universal Slide Trays, and pass it around. We could draw straws of a digital kind to see what order the machine should be used, or go by need, or second letter of the last name, or the like. I can't afford $1500 right now, but I can afford $300 - $400. If one of those who would be interested has never used Bill Me Later and has a good credit rating, the costs could be defrayed over a six month period with no fees, no interest. It has to be paid by six months or all accrued interest will be added at a high interest rate. So no fooling around, and no jumping in if you can't swim. Re: OT: Good news, bad news
On the other hand, the 35mm 120 film scanner model Pacific Image Prime Film 120 Multiple Format Scanner after rebates is just $1500, free shipping, USA. I also found that the previously mentioned Pacific Image Powerslide 4000 CCD Scanner is also sold under the Braun banner at BH with less resolution, for $200 more, or $1699.00 with no rebates. On the good side is they have a refurbished unit for $899.00. I wonder about the BH writers who compose these catalog listings. Here they are selling a $1300 scanner (the 5000) and the big print is supposed to put one in rapture because the listing tells you that the $18.95 Universal Slide Tray is included FREE!!. Thanks Bruce. The magazine's art directors did the PS work. I do some general retouching before I send off the pics, but never crop into the cars. The covers are done at the publisher's headquarters, and some fairly good craftsmen are employed there. The inside photos are handled by more junior people. For newsstand mags, it's all about covers. lighting thoughts/questions
I wonder if anyone has tried simulating a ring light for macro work, by putting a studio strobe with umbrella directly behind the camera and triggering the camera with a cable release? In a similar vein, what is the fabric that is used for shoot through umbrellas, soft boxes etc? It seems I could make a really big softbox for a lot less than it would cost to buy, if I bought the right fabric, plastic or whatever is used for the diffuser. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Blurb color profiles
How much difference does it really make to use the blurb ICC color profiles rather than sRGB? I would guess that they would know the necessary correction to apply from sRGB to their own machines to get that last little tweak. Part of the reason I asked is that I followed the directions for adding the icc profiles to both the Mac and to lightroom, and they still aren't showing up as an option in lightroom. The costco ones I added a few years ago are there fine. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: OT: Comet Lovejoy survives close encounter with Sun
As far as I'm concerned, this is both the most beautiful and remarkable photo that I have seen in 2011. http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/images/station/crew-30/hires/iss030e015479.jpg In 2nd place, is the Vancouver riot couple's kiss shot. Memorable in the extreme. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/17/vancouver-riot-kiss-photograph-mystery Darren Addy Kearney, Nebraska -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I cannot count the number of ways that I wish I had taken that photo. Is there nobody on the list that has been able to take photos of Lovejoy? Re: Lenticular clouds over Yorkshire
Mount Rainier creates several almost every day. Sometimes it will wear a cap for many days. It's an air compression humidity thing. They are formed by strong updrafts acting upon moist air at lower altitudes, causing the air to cool to its dew point as it reaches the mountaintop where it wraps around it . The cooled air then falls into the warmer air and the condensed moisture dissipates (disappears). I think... I wish I had a recording of what I heard in February as that was in a different league. There are some photos on the BBC website now but they don't show a lot. Most of the damage is confined to a couple of smallish areas. But those small areas wore it big time. This is about the 4th or 5th time they've had to dig this crap out. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-16315538 The authorities had recently rezoned them from orange to green meaning they could move ahead with repairing their houses, but now they're begging to be rezoned to red so they can have the government buy their land and move out. I don't blame them as that land should never have been built on in the first place. I'm waiting to find out whether it's slumped or not. If so it could become prone to flooding. The next year or so is going to be interesting as more and more people are planning to leave the city, many going to Australia. Even those without property damage are getting really sick of it. I'd better mention that we're OK and are not planning to go anywhere.
