Re: OT: Christchurch central rebuild plan

2012-07-30 Thread David Mann
Thanks for your comments, Walt. I wasn't sure if you'd be able to see the
video from overseas.

I read an article on the Daily Mail site as well which offers an outside view
and some good stills from the video. Note the caption on the last photo is
wrong... the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is the Catholic one, not the
Anglican one in the photo.

So far there's been surprisingly little whingeing so the plan must be pretty
good.

OT - Backups & Cockups, Netbooks & MyBooks, Hard Drives & Dryers

2012-07-30 Thread Anthony Farr
Backups, to me, originally meant CDs, then DVDs. But doubts were
raised about the permanence of optical media, and my backup load was
too large to periodically refresh everything, so I moved to hard
drives. A couple of years ago I saw a product called Clickfree
Automatic Backup, which is a small device placed in the usb cable
between a computer on a wifi network and an external hard drive. With
a little bit of software running on each computer in the network,
they'd all be periodically backed up with no attention required.
Great! And in all honesty it worked a treat. My son and I had all
our data secured across 3 computers.

But... and there's always a 'but', isn't there, the time came when my
500GB drive wasn't a big enough repository, so I got a 1TB WD MyBook,
and my troubles began. Although there was nothing wrong with the
MyBook, it had its own backup software, didn't it. No worries, thinks
I, I'll just delete it from the drive. I don't want it, didn't ask
for it and won't ever use it, so why not? The answer to 'why not?'
was that WD had put the backup software on a fixed partition, and all
my subsequent research on forum after forum informed me that the
partition resists every attempt at deletion or reformatting.
Bastards!

Never mind, thinks I, I'll just ignore it.

But... a week or two after the MyBook went into service I noticed that
backups had ceased to occur on schedule. Then I noticed that the
Clickfree icon in 'My Computer' had gone plain, when it should appear
as a logo. Uh oh. Looking into it I found that the device, which
came filled with installation files and firmware and such, was empty.
The Clickfree help desk was great, I couldn't ask for better. They
gave me a link to download the files needed to reflash the firmware,
but to no avail. Then they emailed the files to me to ensure that I
had uncorrupted copies of them. Still no success. So without any
hesitation they sent me a new device. And that's where the Clickfree
story ends for the moment, because it seemed to me that the MyBook had
killed the Clickfree, and I wasn't about to give it a second chance.

Now I was back to doing manual backups. No way was I going to use the
WD backup software. I would plug the Mybook into my netbook computer
and send to it, over my home network, the new files and changes from
each computer . Even at 54Mb/sec it was quicker than doing a disk to
disk copy on one computer, because the source computer only had to
read the filefrom its disk, and the destination computer only had to
write the fileto its disk. Doing the job on one computer leads to a
lot of disk swapping and appallingly slow copy and paste times. It
was a perfect solution until about two months ago when I took the
netbook on a long car trip. At the end of the journey I found that
I'd forgotten to shut it down, it was only on standby which doesn't
safely park the hard drive's read/write heads. Soon afterwards it
developed the faintest of clicks. Soon after that it crashed and has
been out of service since. My backup strategy had been derailed.

Fast forward to last week. It was cold, so our heaters were cranked
up to full power. It was a wet, grey day so the family was inside
using televisions and Nintendo Wiis and computers and all the
accessories that go with those things. The kettle was on to brew a
pot of tea. The washing machine was in mid-load. Then... my dear
wife, who knew not what she was about to do, started the clothes
dryer. Everything went very quiet for half a second, then our son
complained about 'unsaved progress', but no harm was done, or so I
thought.

I was wrong. The external hard drive on my computer, where I keep my
documents because they're safer there than in a laptop's internal
drive, was gone from the drive list in 'My Computer'. The unexpected
shutdown had prematurely ended its life, and I'd lost all my new files
and changes of the last two months, because I hadn't put a new backup
process into place. The only positive spin I can put on it is that
I've been in a creative doldrum, and very little of any value has been
lost.

Which brings us to now. The MyBook drive is now my computer's full
time document drive, with its backup software sector disabled in disk
management. I've got a brand new 2TB drive formatting in a brand new
double hard drive dock. Down the track as needed I'll get more and
bigger drives, but NO MORE external drives with manufacturer embedded
crapware for me. From now on it's internal drives, which are
delivered clean and unformatted, in a swappable dock. And soon I'll
get the Clickfree Backup installed again.

Who can remind me how to make different versions of Windows play
nicely on a network? And who can tell me how to make EVERTHING
sharable in Vista? You can make a folder sharable only to find that
its contents aren't shared. Bastards!

Thanks for reading.

regards, Anthony

Some friends of mine consider Phillip to be the most important member of their
band. Here's a picture I got the other night of a pretty girl from the bar
posing with Phillip:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/7680364908/in/set-72157630829191616

It was a bit of a challenge because I was trying out my new Tokina 80-200 that
night, and a long, manual focus lens is kind of tough for photographing people
at close quarters in low light.

The evening had an interesting turn to it. We were about to leave a bit before
11 when someone said that the band from Cavalia (think Cirque du Soleil does a
horse show) was going to show up after they got off work. So, we hung out for
a while longer and I got some shots of the Cavalia musicians too. By the time
I finally got a chance to look at my photos, I was very annoyed. I had
switched to my trusty FA77 and used autofocus, but despite my taking great care
to put the focus point in the frame far away from anything like a mic that I
wouldn't want the camera to focus on, it still managed to focus on the wrong
thing on the vast majority of my shots.

RE: replacing modeling lights on profoto pro-40s

2012-07-30 Thread John Sessoms

From: Larry Colen

Among my vast enablement of this weekend, Darren gave me two Profoto
Pro-40 studio strobes. The modeling light on one of them is not
working. Not only are both the modeling and flash bulbs covered by
some sort of glass cover that it isn't obvious how to remove it, I'm
not having any luck at all finding any sort of documentation on the
strobes. About the closest I've come to a relevant link was some
years old post that the bulbs are no longer available. profoto
doesn't even seem to still have a website.

By any chance does anyone on the PDML know anything about these
strobes? Or at least have better google-fu than I do for finding
info?

Maybe - http://www.profoto.com/

Larry, best I can figure those are older than my Bowens 400B & White
Lightning 10K monolights. Profoto doesn't even show them under
"Discontinued Products".

If you Google Profoto and go to their website, then choose Profoto
Global, look under accessories & they have modeling lamps & flash tubes.

They didn't have images for all of the modeling lamps, but they had
descriptions & product numbers, i.e. Modeling lamp 300W/120V GY6.35 is
Product number: 102071. The product number may be imprinted on the base
for your bulb. Or the data for the bulb may be there.

Google GY6.35 lamp & you can see what those lamps look like. GY6.35 is
apparently the base style of the lamps.

I think the modeling lamps will have to be handled like halogen
headlight bulbs.

Be real careful with the flash tubes. If you break one of those, I think
you're going to be shit out of luck.

PESO Phillip and a girl.

2012-07-30 Thread Larry Colen

I had
switched to my trusty FA77 and used autofocus, but despite my taking great care
to put the focus point in the frame far away from anything like a mic that I
wouldn't want the camera to focus on, it still managed to focus on the wrong
thing on the vast majority of my shots.

replacing modeling lights on profoto pro-40s

2012-07-30 Thread Larry Colen
Among my vast enablement of this weekend, Darren gave me two Profoto Pro-40
studio strobes. The modeling light on one of them is not working. Not only
are both the modeling and flash bulbs covered by some sort of glass cover that
it isn't obvious how to remove it, I'm not having any luck at all finding any
sort of documentation on the strobes. About the closest I've come to a
relevant link was some years old post that the bulbs are no longer available.
profoto doesn't even seem to still have a website.

These images are purely documentary, but for those of you who enjoy
"Ghost Signs" here are two examples from the same building in my home
town. Ghost signs painted on chalk brick (like these) tend to show up
best when the brick gets wet, and we were fortunate enough to get a
decent rain overnight (finally some moisture!) I drive past this
building on my way to work every day, but the way the signs were
"popping" and the overcast light this morning combined to provide the
motivation for me to pull over and get them recorded.

For those interested there is also a Flickr group dedicated to Ghost
Signs, which has over 21,000 images:

PESO: Larry Bait

2012-07-30 Thread Walt Gilbert

Hi all!

I haven't done much photography in a while as it's been just too damned
hot to get out with the camera for the past month. Saturday, though, was
*relatively* nice as it only got up to about 91F with a breeze. As it
happens, a bunch of my high school classmates gathered at a nearby home
and I was able to get the night off from work to attend the festivities.
I took a few pictures, but they were the typical sort of house party
photos you see splattered all over Facebook.

There was one shot, though, that I thought Larry would appreciate. This
is the girlfriend of one of my oldest buddies from my school days,
holding the Storm Trooper helmet he made years ago.

Re: PESO: DINOSAUR ATTACK!

2012-07-30 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thank you, Steven and Frank.

The New Jersey Festival of Ballooning takes place at a small airport
three miles from our home. For the part three years, I have had other
commitments on the weekend of the Festival, which draws 50,000
visitors. This Saturday, I was able to arrive at 6:30 AM for the
morning inflation and mass ascension. That was fortunate, as the
weather Saturday evening and Sunday has been unfavorable for these
events. I was however disappointed as the low cloud cover and
turbulent air made them cancel the sky diving exhibition, after I
managed to secure a position at the fence surrounding the drop zone.

The festival also feature balloon rides, airplane rides, carnival
rides, music concerts, food of all imaginable varieties, and stands
selling everything from hats and framed butterflies to hot tubs, solar
panels and basement finishing systems. It is one of the major event
of this area, along with the 4H Fair that takes place two miles from
my house in the other direction in mid August.

Both are fun events.

I just moved from a Blackberry 9550 to a Galaxy S3. Seriously, it was
like switching from a Stanley Steamer to a Maserati. Fortunately, I
suppose, I'm not so geeky as to be bothered by any glitches that the
thing might have, I just revel in being able to tell it what company I
want to fins and having it give driving directions, my wife says the
call quality compared to my Blackberry is like comparing 2 tin cans and
a string (the Blackberry) to a real telephone.

And Angry Birds is a remarkably addictive little game.
My Blackberry is a touch screen only, but had to be "pressed to click"
to make it work, the new screen is a very sensitive touch screen. It is
taking a bit of getting used to.
I don't like the push ads, I've found they come along for the ride with
some of the free apps. I think if you want rid of the ads, choose apps
that you have to pay for.

I've not studied it in any detail - just watched the video. My first
impression is one of excitement but I'm sure the devil will be in the details ;)
