Pentax K-30 home-made cable release?
Hello all! I was just wondering if anyone managed to build a home-made variant of the cable release for the Pentax K-30? I've found the following links: http://www.hobbymaker.narod.ru/English/Articles/cable_sw_eng.htm http://poildegris.free.fr/electronique/CS205/ http://www.photosig.com/articles/1088/article http://www.digisniper.com/photography/tutorials/advanced/ However it doesn't seem to work for me... From what I've seen I get 3V voltage between the middle contact and ground (contact A and B in the image below), but no voltage between C and B, or A and B for that matter. (And just coupling A and B doesn't either focus or shot the image, neither does C and B. I haven't tried all three together.) http://www.photosig.com/articles/1088/CS-205-schema.gif Any hints here? Thanks, Ciprian. P.S.: Initially I've sent this email to the Pentax users mailing list (Yahoo), but so far no answers (granted since yesterday), and I hope I have more luck on this one. :) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PESO - Nightshot - American Pie
Okay, I took a stab at night photography of the local oil refinery. I used a tripod, remote, 2 second timer setting, shot in manual, ISO 100, f/11, and 1/4 a second (lower than that I wasn't getting enough light). And I found my best results were right before it got really dark. But they came out not very sharp (although I used a good lens). As I drove away I realized I forgot to turn off the lens IS (I used a Canon). So I guess I have to try again with it off and see if I do better. http://mapphotography.com/PAWS/pages/pie.html Any suggestions about what different f stops, etc. to use for a better result, please feel free to let me know. Re: PESO - Nightshot - American Pie
I like it, Marnie. Great subject to experiment with. I'm guessing that the sky/subject light mix might be better a little later than this, before the sky goes quite black, so I'd try even longer shutter times. On sharpness: your ISO and aperture are probably optimal, depending on the lens of course. How solid is your tripod? Have you hung a weight from it to stabilize it more? Re: This is stupefying.
Well, the package arrived and I made a video of the unboxing. Then I contacted Pentax Imaging and recorded the chat session via video. (I typed out everything I wanted to say first in Notepad so I could quickly copy and paste it). So I'm fully documented all the way around. : ) Here's what I got: A genuine Pentax K-5 II with 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR **BOX** with the lens removed and warranty card removed. Everything else was there in new condition, and I had the Serial Number Card for the K-5II 18-135WR Kit. Interestingly, the Pentax box was damaged pretty significantly on the side that held the 18-135mm lens. I would suggest that there are places that buy new damaged box goods from retailers at a substantial discount. They maximize their profit by splitting up the goods and selling them separately. What I ordered is in flawless shape. Took two exposures and the shutter count is revealed as 2. So I contacted Pentax Imaging and used their Live Chat window. Got a Matthew P. as my rep. What I said: Hi Matthew. Hello, I purchased a NEW K-5 II body from Amazon and I was excited to see it arrive today. When I opened the box, it contained what I purchased but came in a Pentax box labeled K-5 II and DA 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 AL [IF] DC WR. There was no lens in the box, meaning that I did get what I ordered. The body appears new and the shutter count was at 1 on my first exposure. However, there was no WARRANTY CARD inside the package. I did get a Serial Number card that appears to have had something torn off (perforations at the top and bottom). The serial number is 4668328 and the number beneath the bar code is 4668328220607. It is for a K-5II 18-135WR KIT. I have never had a problem with any of the previous Pentax cameras or lenses that I have purchased (K200D, K-x, K-5) but the lack of a warranty card is troubling. Is there some way that I can still register it and get it covered under warranty? His answer: Matthew P: I would return it. Id change retailers. You may also be aware of the Pentax Two-Year Extended Warranty for the K5, K5-II, K5-IIs, KR, K-30, K-01 Digital SLR Cameras available for $20 from BH or Adorama. They are recognized as an authorized dealer even if it is sold by a third party. In addition, he said I could buy the two year extended warranty from BH and the camera from Amazon so that is what I will be doing today. $20.00 to extend the warranty for two years is worth it in my book So I plan on getting that, as well. Pentax uses the same cable release as the low end Canon cameras, so they are available premade for less than the individual parts cost from places like linkdelight, dealextreme, ephotoinc etc. I recently splurged and paid $20 or so for the intervalometer version. I'll check both E-bay, DealExtreme, etc., unfortunately there are a few disadvantages: * I hope they ship in Romania; * it will take forever to get them; (2-3 weeks at least if from China;) * I'll have to go to customs (if not shipped from EU), and I have no idea what fee they'll apply (it also depends on the customs officer mood); I recently splurged and paid $20 or so for the intervalometer version. There is a single Pentax reseller in Romania that has it, and as I've said on the pentax-users mailing list: As a side note about costs, in Romania where I live, the CS-205 from Pentax costs about 35 pounds (after roughly applying exchange rate), and the home made parts at most 2 pounds. I don't want to be cheep, but paying for the CS-205 almost 10% of the camera cost seems a little bit too much... (And unfortunately there is only one Pentax reseller.) Re: Pentax K-30 home-made cable release?
Ok. Based on the feedback I've received, I've managed to make it work: * the previously cited articles are correct, and they work on the K-30; thus based on the schema below, to focus connect A and B, and for trigger both A, B and C together (only B and C doesn't work); http://www.photosig.com/articles/1088/CS-205-schema.gif * for the focus to work it must be enabled in the custom functions menu (search for the entry with remote control in the name); Ciprian. I feel like the overall image is too dark. The lights are nothing but spots. If they were to illuminate the structure here and there, edge sharpness would very likely be apparent. Re: PESO - Nightshot - American Pie II
