I'm certain that I haven't moved or deleted anything on that level for a *long* time. Maybe ever. It is possible that it accidentally got moved somewhere lower down. It was an interesting commentary the conductor gave along with the ride. The steam engine they have no, was decommissioned in the 50's i think he said and replaced by diesel engines. However this being an old track, went from Burlington to Tottenham then branched to Collingwood, the new engines were to heavy, so they ran this one till the line until the railroad bought a smaller diesel engine, #22, which funny you should ask, is the engine South Simcoe has as their other modern engine. I thought that was cool info. Both engines finally were was decommissioned and the railroad was going to sell the land however this 5 mile stretch was bought by the Town thinking some one might want to run a tourist train one day. Re: VESO Steam train short
Dave, The railroads in the US went to deisels in the late 40's to the early 50's. It was an efficency move. Steam was in operating condition 50% of the time. Deisel was more like 95% of the time. Management went for Deisel in a big way, saving on maintenance. Other issues were not so apparent. If a steam engine could get a train rolling, it could move it at high speed, often 60 mph+. Deisels ran out of horsepower. They could get trains rolling, but ran out of hp over 20mph. So the railroads slowed down. Less track maintenance it speeds were less meant $$$ too. And there went the romance and glory of Steam Railroading. Regards, Bob S. RE: PESO: Ready to Ride
I wish them more luck than in Brisbane. We've had a scheme running here for the last few years which is massively under-used, about 10-15% of the bikes are actually used daily. The pick-up stations take up several metres of valued parking space, often in areas of high demand and also in front of densely populated areas with limited off-street parking. My suburb is mainly of pre-war construction, many are small houses with no garages, and consequently on-street parking is very highly contested. The fact we're also less than 20 minutes' walk from the CBD means we have a lot of commuter parking to contend with, so there was a valid groundswell of objections to losing yet more of our limited parking facilities. Bad luck, the whole scheme went ahead anyway! Of course, no-one is making any money out of it, despite a significant city council subsidy. Savanna, Illinois
Hi Everyone: Without a preplanned destination, Darrel I jumped in the car and headed west today. We ended up in Savanna, Illinois which is on the Mississippi River. We didn't really stay long--just looked at the mighty river, then headed back home. We drove back roads, enjoying the unending site of farms and small towns. Nice way to clear the head after such a difficult 5 months. We're home now and headed for bed. Just 5 snaps from the car ride today. Re: PESO: Custer County Supercell
Well, today was a disappointment photographically speaking. Instead of the predicted isolated supercells we got a huge convective mess that was basically a moving hurricane of high precipitation monsters all melding into one. The only people who saw tornadoes today were those with armored vehicles and silly enough to put them in their path. That's why they are the stormchasing stars. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LobCDYO78Us (you have to endure a YouTube commercial to view it). Here is a still of a wedge for comparison: http://t.co/hdWk6VisKd This is only visible from inside what is called the bear cage, a place that it is foolhardy to go in an HP supercell, particularly if you have a family that depends upon your income. That being said, it was good exercise from a chasing perspective. I made a number of right calls and was in Lebanon, KS as the tornado sirens went off. Sadly, I (along with a myriad other chasers) was apparently 4 miles *south* of a pair of *twin* tornadoes that was caught by (respected researcher) Tim Samaras. I'm assuming he had data available from something other than the cellular network that I was relying on, which was HORRIBLE in Lebanon. He described his encounter as close but I have yet to say any imagery from his encounter. I'm guessing that one of those tornadoes was spinning clockwise and the other the usual counter-clockwise, but I will have to ask him about that. I did get a few interesting images from the trip, but only a few were truly due to the weather. More to come... I walked out of a hardware store and saw what appeared to be an atom bomb that had gone off to my northwest. I checked radar on my iPad to see how far away it was (distances can be deceiving out here on the plains). To my surprise it wasn't even showing (yet) on radar. As luck would have it it was exactly midway between two radar stations and so (due to the curvature of the earth) had to get very tall before it was seen by either one). As luck would have it, it was only about an hour's drive. When I caught up to it, I found a very pretty little low precipitation (LP) supercell. It was a slow mover and this is what it looked like a couple of hours later, just east of the hamlet of Westerville, Nebraska. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/8850051008/ Hope you enjoy it. -- Photography is a Bastard left by Science on the Doorstep of Art - Peter Galassi -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
REPLY Savanna, Illinois
The shots on Route 64 the river led me to do a bit of research. I eventually discovered that the town, Savanna, is named after the Savanna Oak (now endangered) not the rolling grasslands so familiar in my part of the world. Thanks for widening my horizon.
