Thanks, Bruce.

I've checked every way I know. Time Machine has a record back to December 2,
2012. The last image was uploaded on December 12. Not in the Trash Bin, either
and it goes all the way back to August 6, 2009.

I had my images in a folder at the top level of my file system, along with
/Documents, /Downloads, /Library, etc. /Photos Catalog is on that level, too,
and it's still there. I'm certain that I haven't moved or deleted anything on
that level for a *long* time. Maybe ever.

It is possible that it accidentally got moved somewhere lower down. [I checked
the /Documents folder, but it wasn't there.] I'll make a more systematic check
lower down,

As for avoiding loss, besides the internal drive, Time Machine can be
told to backup other attached drives and that's how I use it. I have a
1 TB Time Machine drive backing up an attached 2 TB drive plus the 250
GB internal drive and it's keeping stuff way back to last November.

Didn't know that. Maybe I should set my system up that way. As it is, I have
Time Machine backing up to one external drive, and then Carbon Copy Cloner
backing up sequentially to two other drives.

I'm sure I didn't have anywhere near as many images as you guys---and
gals---do. Most of mine date from early 2010, when I got my ist*DS. There are a
few older than that. But everything I had is gone.

Just remembered that I gave my daughter a thumb drive of folders I took at her
wedding and of her family subsequently. Maybe I'll be able to get that back.

Thanks for the comments guys and gals. Yes, the one things we've got
is extreme weather. Nebraska goes from sub-zero in the winter to over
100F in the summer and the spring gives us tornado season. Yesterday
was a bonus. TODAY is The Day I've been looking at for a week. The
forecast has held and it looks like many supercells and tornadoes
likely in north central KS and into southern NE. I'll be heading out
mid-afternoon.

Everything about his website and his writing screams look at me!, whatever he

His pictures are nice and he's been to some interesting places, but I don't

I work for a humanitarian INGO and the photographers bring back very different
stuff from his, which is more like travel brochure work.

What I do is dead simple. No craft about it. Camera is on auto everything (or
if it's the Leica, on A at most I ride the focus). So my aim is always, “Look

Cool memories, huh? There were the freights and the long-haul expresses
between big cities, but in the morning a north-bound milk train that
stopped in every town along the route that had a depot and in the late
afternoon another that was south-bound. My mother had an aunt just a
couple years older than her that lived in Poynette, about 25 miles away.
She would take me with her on the train to visit her aunt for the day,
then return in the late PM.

It was an interesting commentary the conductor gave along with the
ride. The steam engine they have no, was decommissioned in the 50's i
think he said and replaced by diesel engines. However this being an
old track, went from Burlington to Tottenham then branched to
Collingwood, the new engines were to heavy, so they ran this one till
the line until the railroad bought a smaller diesel engine, #22, which
funny you should ask, is the engine South Simcoe has as their other
modern engine. I thought that was cool info. Both engines finally were
was decommissioned and the railroad was going to sell the land however
this 5 mile stretch was bought by the Town thinking some one might
want to run a tourist train one day. The SSR was using live tracks at
the time and CN/CPR were getting tired of working around them, so this
was a marriage made in heaven.:-). Funny thing

Re: VESO Steam train short

2013-05-27 Thread Bob Sullivan
Dave,
The railroads in the US went to deisels in the late 40's to the early 50's.
It was an efficency move. Steam was in operating condition 50% of the time.
Deisel was more like 95% of the time.
Management went for Deisel in a big way, saving on maintenance.
Other issues were not so apparent.
If a steam engine could get a train rolling, it could move it at high
speed, often 60 mph+.
Deisels ran out of horsepower. They could get trains rolling, but ran
out of hp over 20mph.
So the railroads slowed down. Less track maintenance it speeds were
less meant $$$ too.
And there went the romance and glory of Steam Railroading.

The train has a small hill to climb out of from Beeton back to

RE: PESO: Ready to Ride

2013-05-27 Thread John Coyle
I wish them more luck than in Brisbane. We've had a scheme running here for
the last few years
which is massively under-used, about 10-15% of the bikes are actually used
daily. The pick-up
stations take up several metres of valued parking space, often in areas of high
demand and also in
front of densely populated areas with limited off-street parking. My suburb is
mainly of pre-war
construction, many are small houses with no garages, and consequently on-street
parking is very
highly contested. The fact we're also less than 20 minutes' walk from the CBD
means we have a lot
of commuter parking to contend with, so there was a valid groundswell of
objections to losing yet
more of our limited parking facilities. Bad luck, the whole scheme went ahead
anyway! Of course,
no-one is making any money out of it, despite a significant city council
subsidy.

Re: PESO: Custer County Supercell

2013-05-27 Thread Darren Addy
Well, today was a disappointment photographically speaking. Instead of
the predicted isolated supercells we got a huge convective mess that
was basically a moving hurricane of high precipitation monsters all
melding into one. The only people who saw tornadoes today were those
with armored vehicles and silly enough to put them in their path.
That's why they are the stormchasing stars. Example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LobCDYO78Us (you have to endure a
YouTube commercial to view it). Here is a still of a wedge for
comparison: http://t.co/hdWk6VisKd

This is only visible from inside what is called the bear cage, a place
that it is foolhardy to go in an HP supercell, particularly if you
have a family that depends upon your income. That being said, it was
good exercise from a chasing perspective. I made a number of right
calls and was in Lebanon, KS as the tornado sirens went off. Sadly, I
(along with a myriad other chasers) was apparently 4 miles *south* of
a pair of *twin* tornadoes that was caught by (respected researcher)
Tim Samaras. I'm assuming he had data available from something other
than the cellular network that I was relying on, which was HORRIBLE in
Lebanon. He described his encounter as close but I have yet to say
any imagery from his encounter. I'm guessing that one of those
tornadoes was spinning clockwise and the other the usual
counter-clockwise, but I will have to ask him about that.

I did get a few interesting images from the trip, but only a few were
truly due to the weather. More to come...

That's a hell of a shot, Darren. I just love it.

Had a fun little backyard chase in Custer County (the county north
and west of my home county of Buffalo). I walked out of a hardware
store and saw what appeared to be an atom bomb that had gone off to my
northwest. I checked radar on my iPad to see how far away it was
(distances can be deceiving out here on the plains). To my surprise it
wasn't even showing (yet) on radar. As luck would have it it was
exactly midway between two radar stations and so (due to the curvature
of the earth) had to get very tall before it was seen by either one).
As luck would have it, it was only about an hour's drive. When I
caught up to it, I found a very pretty little low precipitation (LP)
supercell. It was a slow mover and this is what it looked like a
couple of hours later, just east of the hamlet of Westerville,
 Nebraska.

REPLY Savanna, Illinois

2013-05-27 Thread Alan C
The shots on Route 64 the river led me to do a bit of research. I
eventually discovered that the town, Savanna, is named after the Savanna
Oak
(now endangered) not the rolling grasslands so familiar in my part of the
world. Thanks for widening my horizon.

I think you're right. That TD on the radiator is the give-away.
