Re: GESO - 3 with the K-5
Without any disrespect, Bipin. I've opened the pictures you posted on my 24 inch profiled Dell monitor. It is set to full 1920 x 1200 pixels resolution and I my eyes are appox 1 m away from its surface. What can I say - the photographs are good in terms of light, composition and/or processing. What I also notice is the rather soapy sharpness. We have this term in Russian - the lens produces soapy pictures. What it means that the sharpness is lacking. The lens was kind of struggling to get sharp edges and so it came out soapy. I am not saying that 18-55 AL II is a bad _kit_ lens. It very well may compare favorably to its peers from other manufacturers. But by spending way below USD 300 I got me a Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5, which is sharper, has longer reach and is quite faster than the kit lens. In fact, in my view it gives me 95% of DA* 16-50/2.8 quality for truly a fraction of its cost. I humbly suggest you try this lens. It is known that there is certain sample variation with these lenses, but beside that point that can be overcome with proper pre-buy testing, this is excellent lens indeed. Again - no disrespect or offense meant here. Boris On 7/16/2013 12:19 PM, Bipin Gupta wrote: And plenty of Photographers + Reviewers said the DA 8-55 Kit lens wasn't good. If it were that awful and still worth 750 (clearly a collectors piece) I think I'd probably just sell it and get a usable lens. Yeah, the samples he posted aren't very encouraging at web resolution to say the least. I wouldn't have even posted this if I noticed them right away. Re: K-5 battery charging time
I was told by a friend that leaving the battery on for extend periods is bad because it trickles? I don't really understand that because it should just shut the charger off and stay off as long as the battery registers a charge, but he claimed that. Take it with a grain of salt. Overnight shouldn't pose much problem. Quite honestly keeping lithium ions at full charge all the time is a bad idea as they decrease in capacity faster that way. Same goes for completely dead. My K-7 battery that was original to the camera doesn't last nearly as long because I think that it may have had a few extended sessions in a dead state. YMMV of course. Oh those are quite lovely. I find that CA can be pretty fixable. At least purple fringing. Bad cyan fringing is hard to deal with though. ...its color balance is significantly off to the green/cyan side. The eyes and the legs should be YELLOW. Color wise it's right out of the camera - no adjustment was mage in that regard other than setting white & dark points. Could be the efect of all the green leaves filtering the sunlight on the bird. Re: K-5 battery charging time
There should be no problem the battery is "smart" and communicates with the charger, once it's fully charged it will just turn off, well assuming there are no electrical faults in either battery or charger. Full charge from an almost empty battery should take no more than a couple of hours. On 7/17/2013 8:41 PM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: HOw long should it take? Re: Any new flagship camera rumors?
Indeed. M42 takumars are being bought by the score too. That's been my real problem with k-mount: the lack of affordable used wide angle primes which are indeed in extremely short supply driving prices through the roof. Everyone from nex owners to m4/3 shooters are buying pentax glass because the secret is out about how quality and relatively affordable it is. Seems like everyone knows that the M series is pretty spectacular too. That used to be the least desirable series with K and A winning out. On Wed, Jul 17, 2013 at 8:16 PM, P.J. Re: Semi-OT: The true reasons for a full frame camera
Actually I don't think that Pentax licenses there version from Sony, IIRC they use a very differnt system based on some sort of magnetic levitation as opposed to Sony which uses ball bearings actuated by magnets. The only thing they have in common are the magnets. On the other hand, the only thing Poloroid patented instant film process had in common with Kodak's was osmosis, which being a natural phenomenon, I didn't think was patentable, but hey Kodak lost. Re: Semi-OT: The true reasons for a full frame camera
While I'm sure that there is some engineering involved to make the SR mechanisms handle a larger full frame sensor, in practice the software change should be rather trivial. Due to the 1.5x FOV factor being done away with, all one would have to do is a mathematical change in the focal length that is displayed on the LCD. (What was formerly a 75mm would become a 50mm). The "problem" is that I don't think there WAS a 75mm (it was 85mm) but my point is (hopefully) taken. The algorithm probably needs few changes but the display focal lengths would. I think the bigger problem is in the processing engine and the number of AF points. If you are coming from Pentax's AFS-C design perspective to full frame, I would leave the 11 AF points where they are and then design more around the periphery (of the larger sensor). Adding a minimum of 12 might do it, but you have a lot of computational changes to make to accommodate them. In addition, you have a larger filesize to process and write to disk (new territory for Pentax) so the buffer might again be a problem for continuous shooting. I think that Pentax should probably not shoot for PRO land here, but ENTHUSIAST land in their first full frame DSLR. Then take the lessons learned and apply them to the next generation. I think that the body will have to be somewhat bigger, just to accommodate the larger mirror/pentaprism needed for a full frame. It wouldn't bother me if they ignored video COMPLETELY on a full frame camera, but I doubt that the marketing department would be very excited about that. I'm not sure that anyone who isn't familiar with the injection molding (plastics) business can truly appreciate the amount of time and complexity that goes into a significant new revision (like a full frame camera would entail). My employers own three injection molding plants and an injection mold machining business. That's (probably) why the past several models have all pretty much been in the same K-5 body. A full frame would be a BIG departure from that. And that isn't even considering the software side of things. There are reasons that things take time. Re: Any new flagship camera rumors?
From: Rick Womer Notice the trend of so many to say what they have is 'good enough'? Pentax loses. Notice the trend of so many to wait a year or more until there's massive price cuts on the newest model Pentax camera? Pentax loses. Notice the trend of so many to purchase used gear as opposed to new? Pentax loses. Then there's those that put there money elsewhere because they're not getting what they want from Pentax. Pentax loses. There's nothing wrong with any of those actions and all are justifiable. Still - Pentax loses. IMO - every other camera manufacturer has to deal with those exact same issues, and to be honest I don't think that they are limiting factors. I just checked on ebay - there are over twice as many used Nikon and Canon lenses there then Pentax. I didn't check bodies but I assume there are a lot more used DSLR's of those brands simply because there has been a more active upgrade path. The more people upgrade the more used bodies there are for the bargain hunters. And Pentax (sadly) does not have to deal with the "problem" of Sigma, Tamron, and TOkina making lenses that compete with them - though I wish Sigma would kick out a few of their macro lenses in the K Mount. A robust used market is the sign of a healthy brand, IMO. But a brand that tries to live off its used market is in trouble. Back in the 90's the buzzword with Pentax was that there was this huge vast reserve of used lenses and since there was great backwards compatibility with Pentax you could tap into those old lenses. It was a bargain hunter's brand. It was a great argument at the time given that Canon and Nikon had respectively scrapped or significantly modified their lens mount a few years earlier. And even though I supect that at this very moment some dim-witted blogger cum photo gear reviewer is repeating that line about Pentax, Pentax's legacy glass advantage has largely faded. Canon and Nikon have a couple decades of used gear compatible with their systems now, and their used market is better than Pentax's, and if you are a bargain hunter you would be better off trolling in their waters and not Pentax's. I don't know how the Pentax brand will be resurrected but I keep hoping that Ricoh has a plan... My friend LaRee is involved with a stock photo website, now in beta: http://www.studentstock.com She recently contacted me looking for photos, and good photographers, for the new website. I've been too busy to delve deeply into the site, or the terms, but she asked if I could recommend some photographers for the site. The pay isn't much, but it is, at least in theory, larger than zero. Re: Semi-OT: The true reasons for a full frame camera
I'm not sure how much scaling up would be required the hypothetical FF Pentax would require for a FF mirror box. If you compare a *ist-D and a *ist-Ds and an ZX/MZ-5n, you'll find that the *ist-D has the same size mirror box as the ZX/MZ camera and the *ist-Ds camera has a mirror box and mirror more in keeping with an APS-C sensor. Yet it isn't appreciably smaller for that, the volume just seems to be distributed differently. Now the shake reduction system might require a slightly different form factor, but then again it might not. The K20 isn't _that_ bad at 800 ISO. Mine sure isn't. That noise looks like a background of Ramen noodles. Did you shoot straight to JPEG? Pull the exposure up in post a whole bunch? Is it a majorly serious crop? You should really try Nik Dfine on stuff like this. Works quite well at removing stubborn noise. Nonetheless, a beautiful bird, Ken. Semi-OT: The true reasons for a full frame camera
I ran across this in a discussion thread in DPReview comparing the Nikon D600 to the Nikon D7100. I've mentioned here before that I've been looking closely at the Nikon D600 and consider its specifications to be a minimum starting point for what any Pentax FF must offer. Still, it has some shortcomings from my point of view (beyond Nikon having put their IS in the lenses). Someone mentioned the D7100 as an example of what a Pentax K5II follow-on camera would need to be, so I took a look at its specs on DPReview and it seems to have fixed every concern I had about the D600 (other than IS which I understand ain't gonna' happen). http://www.falklumo.com/lumolabs/articles/equivalence/ff.html Semi-OT because the author bases his design of a hypothetical compact FF Nikon "D800c" on scaling up the the Pentax K5 body to fit in a FF sensor & mirror box. The state of Hawai'i has never recorded temperature above 100 F, and that has occurred only once, in the Ka'u desert, a huge field of black lava. Re: Help request, who knows a lens repair service that will even look at older third party lenses?
The, relatively beat up cosmetically, copy that Boris found on Pentax fora had an asking price of $200.00. Even having suffered a drop to a concrete floor the version I have /looks/ like it's in better shape. The entire problem seems to be that it struck the floor mount first, the rear lens cap took most of the impact and shattered. However it seems to have passed a little, maybe a lot, I can't tell, not sure how much a little or lot would be in this case, of the impact force on to the aperture stop down lever. The flange that protects the stop down lever is made out of some kind of tough black plastic, and that's slightly deformed. I'm hoping that nothing sheared off, that all that's wrong is a metal part that can be carefully re-shaped. On 7/17/2013 3:42 PM, Darren Addy wrote: Lens Repair Rates (per hour): If you watch us.. $55 If you give us advice$65 If you help or assist us$75 If you worked on it before...$150 Frankly, my first thought is that this can't be that pricey or hard to find of a lens and that replacement would be faster/cheaper (or at least close to the same cost) but then I saw you said it was an "A" lens.
