Hardly motley, Dave. That's a great Geso, well captured. What a beautiful
area but then I suppose most of NZ is with the high rainfall. The heron is a
handsome fellow apparently in full breeding plumage (which he should be at
this time of the year). Much fancier than our herons.

Re: Initial experiences with K-5

2013-10-28 Thread George Sinos
Eric -

There is no special honor in focusing manually and there is nothing
mysterious about auto-focus if you turn off all but one of the
sensors.

Focusing is a purely mechanical skill that has nothing to do with
making your photos better. Picking the place in the photo where you
want to focus is the skill.

If you set the camera to use a single focusing sensor, then lock the
focus so you can recompose the image, you're not doing anything
significantly different than when we used to manually focus in the old
days. Even then we usually had help from a split image or micro-prism
spot that would help us achieve better focus. Those tools do not
exist on today's cameras.

Once you're comfortable with that start to explore the other autofocus
features and determine what is useful to you.

Take advantage of the cameras features that can give you more time to
concentrate on what is important.

I've reached an age where I am quite thankful for auto-focus. If I had
to depend on my eyesight I would only have sharp photos by accident.

I was surprised at how quickly I figured out the video editor in

lot of designers need to re-read Donald Norman's The Design of

I still find the control layout of my Sony A850 generally superior to
that of my Pentax K5 for a lot of the reasons he discusses (though the
Pentax lens release and DOF preview are much superior to Sony's).

2013-10-28 Thread P.J. Alling
It's not the simplicity itself that's at issue. It's the original UNIX
creed, programs that do one thing well.

I want a still camera that does still photography well, that's
ergonomically suited to it. Something that takes good quality
photographs printable up to a certain size. I don't care if the camera
makes movies, really good movies require seeing in ways that I just
don't see. Really good movies, unless they're good due to compelling
subject matter, require planning that even Ansel Adams didn't need to
do. As a still photographer, using what used to be called a minicam,

I want a Camera that doesn't get in my way, but has all the necessary
controls readily available to take still pictures. That should be
control over the three parts parts of exposure, ISO, Aperture, Shutter
Speed. Control over the meter with selectable spot averaging and the
program. The ability to turn the anti shake system on or off quickly,
as conditions warrant. In auto focus modes the ability to choose focus
points quickly.

I shoot raw so it's not quite so important that I change color balance
quickly though it does help get good exposures. So that shouldn't be
buried to deeply in a menu either.

For tripod work getting into a true mirror lockup would be nice too.

On the K20D Pentax got almost all of those things right. All the
shooting controls are right there.Shutter and Aperture are
controlled by two wheels, ISO press the OK button and turn the front
wheel. Metering pattern is right there under the mode dial. SR a
switch on the back of the camera. White balance on the quick menu.
Change a focus point, in shooting mode right there on the four way
controller.

The only thing you need to take your cameras from your eye for is white
balance.

Tho only real deficiency is mirror lockup for tripod work.

We can discuss the cameras deficiencies as a photographic tool at
length, it has many and can be extremely frustrating, but it's control
layout for the still photographer is better than almost any other camera
I've had a chance to play with, (I say almost because I only got to
handle a Nikon D3 for a very short period of time so that might be
better), though I still liked the quick white balance setup on the *ist-D.

Re: An appeal for Divergence and Simplicity from the Luminous Landscape

2013-10-28 Thread Stan Halpin
I can say that I have had that experience, several times, with the E-PL2.
Rather than going through the process of reprogramming the button - i.e.,
setting it so that accidental button-pushes would be less troublesome - I sold
the camera. Why would anybody think of putting a big honking button right where
the users thumb is going to fall when holding the camera for shooting?

Re: K-3 manual now available (PDF)

2013-10-28 Thread Stan Halpin
Huh. I never had a reason to look at the K-5 etc pictures with their captions
showing where each of the buttons are - I figured I knew all of that.
So if the cameras have a sound capability, why haven't we seen functions that
would allow a voice-recorded tag on images, or spoken warnings. Why can't I use
the O-GPS1 unit to give me driving directions - it already has a navigation
feature.
And in case anyone thinks I am serious, look at the thread on divergence and
simplicity. I disagree with the author's examples in several instances but
agree with the basic point that feature clutter is not a good thing.

I am still baffled by the whole video thing and haven't been able to think of a
single instance where I would want my DSLR to record video, much less sound. I
have owned and used video cameras in the past, and if I wanted to shoot video
again the last device I would consider for that purpose would be a DSLR. First
choice would be a video camera.

Re: K-3 manual now available (PDF)

2013-10-28 Thread Paul Stenquist
DSLRs make good video cameras for some applications. I wrote and directed a
video for an automotive parts supplier and worked with a pro cameraman who
regularly shoots Red Wings hockey, Michigan football and other major television
productions. For the shoot in the part supplier's design studio, he used a
Canon DSLR with a video screen attached. It was one of their high end APSC
models. With relatively wide shots needed, it proved a good choice and a
convenient way to do the job. At the auto show many of the pro video guys shoot
with similar rigs: DSLRs with video screen attached. I shot the video for my
Times Dream Cruise piece with my K-5 on the same day I shot the stills. Worked
out well, since I was able to prefocus and use a wide lens for all the shots I
needed. The only limitation was my limited experience as a videographer. I look
forward to better video on the K-3.

We've all heard of LBA, but how about LBL? (Lens Bucket List - lenses
you want to own/try before you die).

If the A* 135mm f1.8 is on your LBL, there is one on eFlay now that
starts at about $750 less than KEH price:

I'm putting up a smaller Christmas tree this year that will sit atop a
table. The table is big enough to accommodate a small circle of train
track. Rather than leave such an important task to the last minute, I
decided to test things out this weekend. (Not the tree. Just the
train.)

Killing two birds with one stone, I shot a little video with my iPhone
and tried out the video editing features in Photoshop CC for the first
time. Here are the results.

http://georgesinos.com/blog/2013/10/27/the-christmas-train

I was surprised at how quickly I figured out the video editor in
Photoshop CC. It was (Unlike most things in PS) quite straight
forward. I've used a couple of other video editors in the past and
they have many more features. But for slapping together a quick video
or slide show, this looks like it will do everything I need.

The benefits of shooting Pentax: even our largest bodies (with the

Re: PESO - (and VESO) The Christmas Train

2013-10-28 Thread George Sinos
Thanks for the comments everyone.

Alan - the train in this photo is HO scale, roughly half the size of O.

When I was in the hobby shop buying the circle of track for these
trains I saw some modern O. Wow, nothing like the old Lionel stuff
that I remember from when I was a kid. Much more detailed and very
much made to look as real as possible. Also, very expensive. $50-$80
for a boxcar. Engine prices were in the Hundreds of dollars. That
would add up pretty quickly. Of course, O is pretty big, so you
wouldn't need much. Then again, from the conversation I overheard
while there, I'm guessing the train hobbyists have the same issues
with rolling stock as photographers have with lenses.

Subject: PESO - (and VESO) The Christmas Train

But for slapping together a quick video
or slide show, this looks like it will do everything I need.

re: An appeal for Divergence and Simplicity from the Luminous Landscape conflated with Re: K-3 manual now available (PDF)

2013-10-28 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
There are good situations for when the larger sensor in a DSLR or
TTL-electronic camera, as well as the availability of the range of lenses they
can use, makes sense for video work. At least at the price point I can afford
in video cameras … Even professional movie makers choose DSLRs and
TTL-electronic cameras for some purposes to save on equipment costs. There are
other times when a DSLR or small TTL-electronic enable shots that could not be
done with a pro video camera due to size, weight, etc.

My sum-up of the LuLa article: Just another old git who wants the good old
days to come back. ;-)

I have plenty of simple cameras that address the basics, from the stone axe of
my plain prism Nikon F up to and including my Leica M9.

And I have a couple of very complex cameras. One of the most complex is my
latest - the Olympus E-M1. It also has the best controls of any camera I've
owned, and I can configure them to work *exactly* the way I want the camera to
work, from fully manual with instant access to ISO, exposure time, aperture,
and focus, to fully automated.

I have no complaints about what manufacturers make. I applaud the diversity of
design and ideas their products represent. I choose what I want to work with
from that, and make what I choose do what I want it to. If it's too much
trouble, I sell whatever it was and buy something else that does it more
easily.

To me, that's the only sane way to do things. Manufacturers don't make a
product for 100 people, or even 1000. They never have, not for anything that
costs under $10K anyway. You pick from what they make to suit your needs best,
and adapt.

A fresh pack of Impossible Color Protection film is in the SX-70 now. :-)

Thanks for the responses.

If they are only trolling for free images, I will probably not hear
back from them. If they are willing to pay (something) I will probably
get back a lowball offer (like a copy of the issue and free Gift

evidence of its appeal through all of the favorites and comments on

my ego says that it would be cool to just see it published).

OT - Cycle Mounts - Request

2013-10-28 Thread Steve Cottrell
Throwing this open to the list as there are plenty of cycle-holics on
here. Anyone know of any decent clamp-on specially-shaped mounts for
GoPro (or similar) cameras for attaching to expensive and sensitive
aerodynamically contoured carbon fibre cycle frames?

GoPro mounts are ten-a-penny but when you come to try and attach them to
high-end racing bikes, not only do their riders get very skittish about
clamping onto irregular shaped carbon fiber, but actually it's
impossible to do quickly and easily. If I had to design it and build it
myself, I know exactly what I need, but perhaps someone knows of a good
starting point?

Any pointers to existing web pages or images gratefully appreciated.

I recently filmed an Olympic cyclist but had very little time. With my
existing kit I could have done it, but not in the few minutes I had
available. Woulda taken me 15 or 20 to set up. I need it to be 1 or 2 minutes!

Thanks.

Appreciate the words of caution, also Bob. I've dealt with Readers
Digest before. They paid for a humor piece I wrote and that they
published last year (after trying to get it for free first). Also they
contacted me simulatanously through multiple channels (including
Flickr Mail).

UPDATE: they responded in less than 35 minutes with this:
Thanks for getting back to me so promptly. As of now, the image
hasn't been selected yet, but we'd like to know if it is available for
stock usage (for a single use, print only). I'll be in touch soon
about more details.

So, we'll see. It probably depends upon how many other images they
have in the mix and how many of them are giving them to them for free
(and how well they like this image as compared to them).

I would be happy license the image to you, and provide you with a

The price of stock makes it difficult to get much of a price for a photo,
unless it's a one-time event that only you have captured. . Stock images are
generally available these days for less than $100, much less in some cases.
While your photo is excellent, it's a storm photo, and while photos of that
genre available as stock may not be as good, I would guess there are thousands
from which to choose. Good luck with this, but if I were you I would be happy
with a modest sum and a photo credit.

Appreciate the words of caution, also Bob. I've dealt with Readers

published last year (after trying to get it for free first). Also they
contacted me simulatanously through multiple channels (including
 Flickr Mail).

I want a still camera that does still photography well, that's
ergonomically suited to it. Something that takes good quality
photographs printable up to a certain size. I don't care if the
camera makes movies, really good movies require seeing in ways that
I just don't see. Really good movies, unless they're good due to
compelling subject matter, require planning that even Ansel Adams
didn't need to do. As a still photographer, using what used to be
 called a minicam,

I want a Camera that doesn't get in my way, but has all the
necessary controls readily available to take still pictures. That
should be control over the three parts parts of exposure, ISO,
Aperture, Shutter Speed. Control over the meter with selectable
spot averaging and the program. The ability to turn the anti shake
system on or off quickly, as conditions warrant. In auto focus modes
the ability to choose focus points quickly.

I also want the camera to report to me what is happening at the raw
file level, not the processed jpeg. I want to know just how close
I am to clipping my whites and blacks.

I shoot raw so it's not quite so important that I change color
balance quickly though it does help get good exposures. So that
shouldn't be buried to deeply in a menu either.

Change a focus point, in shooting mode right there on the four way
 controller.

The only thing you need to take your cameras from your eye for is
 white balance.

And that is only as a convenience since you adjust that in post processing
anyways.

The problem is not complexity in function, but complexity in interface.

As he said, the iPhone does a lot of things, but for many people the
user interface is incredibly simple.

One place that Pentax completely blew the UI was the FX button.
It is a single button press to change to some particular mode,
but pressing the button again doesn't bring you back to where
you were. To get back to what you were doing, you have to
navigate complicted menues. Even if you accidentally pressed
the button and didn't really want to change modes.

Tho only real deficiency is mirror lockup for tripod work.

We can discuss the cameras deficiencies as a photographic tool at
length, it has many and can be extremely frustrating, but it's
control layout for the still photographer is better than almost any
other camera I've had a chance to play with, (I say almost because I
only got to handle a Nikon D3 for a very short period of time so
that might be better), though I still liked the quick white balance
 setup on the *ist-D.

makes covers most of my arguments, without the Pending assault charges,
though I think his plea for simplicity of control might go a bit too far in
the other direction, and having a third dial dedicated entirely to ISO...
Pushing a button and turning one of the e-dials isn't all that onerous as

mysterious about auto-focus if you turn off all but one of the
 sensors.

Thanks, George. It’s a hangup of mine.

Focusing is a purely mechanical skill that has nothing to do with
making your photos better. Picking the place in the photo where you
want to focus is the skill.

I agree with the second sentence. Though I’m the rankest amateur here, not so
sure about the first. But maybe that just proves my amateur status

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll give it a try when I get an autofocus lens.
Chances are good.

Take advantage of the cameras features that can give you more time to
 concentrate on what is important.

I've reached an age where I am quite thankful for auto-focus. If I had
to depend on my eyesight I would only have sharp photos by accident.

I’m probably older than you, and it’s occurred to me that I could use up a lot
of the time left to me learning how to focus manually. However, as I say, I do
have the hangup. And though I’m ancient, my eyesight is excellent. No

Re: Picture Storage

2013-10-28 Thread P.J. Alling
The SMC F 35=70 f3.5~4.5 is a real sleeper and won't set you back much
more that $35. Sharp with few if any noticeable optical defects, (maybe
a touch of barrel and pincushion distortion at either end of it's zoom
range), it's kind of old timey in it's implementation of close focusing,
though it does it at the long end of it's zoom range. The other good
choice in a bargain lens that pretty much fills that gap is the FA
28-70mm f4.0, also very good though prone to having the rear composite
aspheric element separate into its component glass and plastic parts.
Well worth it's normal selling price of around $90. as long as you
understand that it might go tit's up at any time, even if it's just
sitting on a shelf.

The *ist Ds supports SDHC cards of up to 32gig.

file level, not the processed jpeg. I want to know just how close
I am to clipping my whites and blacks.

That would be nice, does /any/ current camera actually implement it that
way?

I shoot raw so it's not quite so important that I change color
balance quickly though it does help get good exposures. So that
shouldn't be buried to deeply in a menu either.

Change a focus point, in shooting mode right there on the four way

The K20D doesn't have an FX button so I can't complain about it.

I suppose when I get a K-5/II/s or a K-3 I'll be able to complain about
the FX button just like everyone else.

With the E-M1, the black and white point clipping points can be adjusted so you

Excellent article. Thanks for pointing it out since I almost never
look at Luminous Landscape any more (that site used to be a daily
must read before it became a kind of Robb Report for cameras). A
lot of designers need to re-read Donald Norman's The Design of
Everyday Things (I'm assuming most read it – or were supposed to – in
school).

I still find the control layout of my Sony A850 generally superior to
that of my Pentax K5 for a lot of the reasons he discusses (though the
Pentax lens release and DOF preview are much superior to Sony's).

I believe that Leicas do.

There is the ongoing problem that for any particular person,
just about any bit of software will consist of 70% cruft of
useless features that they never need. The problem is that
it's a different 70% for each person.

The same problem applies to government spending as well.

The author of the LL article held Apple up as a paragon
of clean simple design. I will say that in general Apple
products work amazingly well, as long as what I want to
do is something that the designers thought that somebody
should want to do. Anything else? You're best off opening

 Penney branded version.

I doubt if one would confuse the image quality of one of those with
the A* 135mm f1.8 or the Zeiss version (natch). Still, one could have
 some fun!

We've all heard of LBA, but how about LBL? (Lens Bucket List - lenses
you want to own/try before you die).

If the A* 135mm f1.8 is on your LBL, there is one on eFlay now that
starts at about $750 less than KEH price:

I had a Sigma back in the film days that I bought at the Miami
International Camera
show back in the late 80's new old stock in the box. It was single
coated and was a flare
magnet and was bulky as hell on the front of my spotmatic without any
addtional

other none pentax

lenses.

Re: An appeal for Divergence and Simplicity from the Luminous Landscape

2013-10-28 Thread P.J. Alling
That's very true of complex computing devices. Even Windows when it was
based on MS-DOS (and NT when it's UI wasn't tightly coupled it's DOS),
there were things that were at best cumbersome if not impossible to do
except from the command prompt.

But that's still a side issue. There are only certain core functions
that a camera needs to fulfill. In a still camera only one really, take
and store still photos. Everything that helps that should be available,
every thing that impedes that should be discouraged. Making movies with
a still camera is a nice feature, but it if begins to impede the ability
to take stills then it's counter productive. If a reviewer thinks
that's a problem then they've missed the point of having a dedicated
still camera.

Hell I've got two printers currently set up, a laser printer for text
documents and a wide carriage inkjet for photographs. They can both do
each others job, but the laser prints only BW and relatively low
resolution graphics, while the inkjet print quality is equal to the
laser printer but tremendously more expensive per page. Should anyone
be upset if each isn't as good at the others job?

I believe that Leicas do.

There is the ongoing problem that for any particular person,
just about any bit of software will consist of 70% cruft of
useless features that they never need. The problem is that
it's a different 70% for each person.

The same problem applies to government spending as well.

The author of the LL article held Apple up as a paragon
of clean simple design. I will say that in general Apple
products work amazingly well, as long as what I want to
do is something that the designers thought that somebody
should want to do. Anything else? You're best off opening
up a terminal window and writing a bash script.

Re: OT - Cycle Mounts - Request

Throwing this open to the list as there are plenty of cycle-holics on

GoPro (or similar) cameras for attaching to expensive and sensitive

It depends on where you're intending to mount the camera as it's going to be a
very exotic bike that doesn't have at least one round tube somewhere.

You do need to be careful about how tight you clamp things on carbon, but that
applies to aluminium as well. Non-round shapes are definitely going to be much
more sensitive.

I recently bought a couple of these for my tail light, which might give you
some ideas.
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cateye-hp5-seat-stay-clamp/

Here's the whole category:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/light-spares/

My light came with the flex-tight bracket but it's sized for larger diameter
tubes and the light doesn't fit well on the seat tube, hence the seat stay
mount.

Combined with some clever dremel work you might be able to use something like
that if it's strong enough.

Whatever you do, I'd strongly recommend cutting a piece from an old inner tube
and wrapping it around the frame to protect it from scratches. You only need a
small piece to fit under a clamp and the rubber grips pretty well.

I think for irregular shapes your best bet might be zip-ties. It's very common
to use them to mount bike computer accessories in places that aren't
necessarily designed to be clamped (forks, chain stays, down tubes).

I'd volunteer for testing but it's not entirely practical... unless you felt
like some better weather right now!

Cheers,
Dave

Re: An appeal for Divergence and Simplicity from the Luminous Landscape

2013-10-28 Thread David Parsons
What is important to you isn't necessarily important to someone else.
I am really having trouble figuring out what specific problem there is
with video on a still camera. Don't use it. I don't use the video
function on my K-5. I also don't use the TAv mode, but I don't
complain that it takes up extra space on the dial, I simply ignore it.

What, specifically, about video on your dSLR is inhibiting your taking
still picture?
