Not quite, if you scroll down it's above the K-5IIs there is no quick

It is a question of price points.
Still, the K50 is so close to the K5 in price, the K5 series needs to be
come more valuable and fill in the gap above it.
Moving up a hundred dollars or so would position it correctly. Same goes
for the K500.

I see the K5II is gone from here, also.

Jack,

It was not cropped at all.
It was shot with 17-70/4, at 70mm. This lens tends to be soft at the
longer end (beyond ~50mm).
Since it was a catch of the moment, - I did not have time to change
the lens to the 50-135/2.8 that would've done a better job.

By "it", do you mean the light house or the bridge? In either case, I do
not see how that would help.

I was thinking about it, but something stops me... Probably the fact
that the bridge than will be cut off.. But may be you are right and some
cropping would help.

Steve, I regard the 50-135 as a "people lens". It's great for beauty
shots (face macro), portraits and group portraits where you want the
tele compression that brings the people together and is flattering to
heavier folks. And its optics are absolutely impeccable.

But because of its weight you usually need to use it on a tripod, and
has been pointed out its slow to focus. In studio I usually just use
MF. I'm hoping it will be better on my K-3, but then I would need to
let it go for a few weeks to get the SDM repaired, and I have shoots
scheduled so that ain't happening for a while.

It is a question of price points.
Still, the K50 is so close to the K5 in price, the K5 series needs to be
come more valuable and fill in the gap above it.
Moving up a hundred dollars or so would position it correctly. Same goes
for the K500.

I see the K5II is gone from here, also.

Re: Limited lens line upgrades

2013-12-04 Thread Alexandru-Cristian Sarbu
This is more difficult - from their press release
(http://www.us.ricoh-imaging.com/about/press/285) it appears the
application method is different than that of the "normal" coatings
(smc included), with a better control of the thickness and evenness;
also, compared to the otherwise superior ABC, it should be harder /
more resilient to being scratched.
I tried to dig through their patents, but I can't accurately say which
one is for the HD coating.

OT: book recommendation

2013-12-04 Thread Stan Halpin
I have just been enlisted in a project to write a book documenting the last 40
years of work of the organization for which I used to work. So I dug into the
back corner of my storage locker and retrieved five boxes of personal books,
files, reports, etc. that I had packed up on my retirement 3.5 years ago.

One of the items I found I thought might be apropos for this group given this
months PUG theme.

The Collapse of Chaos: Discovering Simplicity in a Complex World by Jack Cohen
and Ian Stewart, Penguin Books, 1995.

I recall that this was a good read, thought provoking. An exploration of how we
humans clarify and simplify the complex world. And the dangers of a
reductionist approach.
Now that it has surfaced, it is on the top of my stack to read again.

(BTW - the book had no relationship to my work. I had loaned it to someone else
in the office, he returned it as I was packing up.)

Re: DA star 50-135

2013-12-04 Thread Igor Roshchin

I love my 50-135 (I never checked its focusing ability though).
IMHO, this lens is very good for portraits, especially candid ones,
where you are shooting from a distance. It is also very reasonable
when you are shooting people in relatively dim light.
This lens is in my "main set" (along with 3 primes and 17-70)
that travels with me practically everywhere where I take my DSLR.
I even stopped taking 18-250 in favor of 50-135, when I am not very
likely to need the long end of the zoom.

I am not sure if it is well suited as a "tele" lens for other types of
work.
I don't think it is good for macro either, but I never tried it in that
capacity.

it is big & heavy, plus it doesn't focus close, so i wind up using the 50-200
WR when i want telephoto, and Sigma 105mm when i want macro; before i sell it i
need to take the 50-135 on a road trip to see how i like it in that context; i
also just ordered some auto extension tubes in part to see how they perform on
this lens

I would not be surprised to see a K5iii in short order.
Take the K5 and add s/w anti-aliasing and other fine K3 features.
If they are done in software/firmware then the migration is cheap and the
value increase significant.

Now if they would only fix their AF algorithm.

I read it as:
LIMITED (lens line) UPGRADES.

As for the name, - yes, "HD" is ubiquitous these days, and that's what
they are targeting.
"SMC" is "widely known to a limited circle of people". HD is a better
buzz word for the broader customer base.

I am surprised: k5 ii is discontinued (?)

2013-12-04 Thread Igor Roshchin

I am rather surprised that K-5 ii has been discontinued after just about
1 year of production.
Yes, I know that it was a successor for K-5, but still...
It looks like Ricoh is trying to boost up the revenue by cutting off the
less expensive items in favor of the new ones (K-3, HD lenses, etc.)

The facts about current availability of K-5 ii:
As P.J. noted, B&H lists it as discontinued, Adorama does not have it
listed at all. (Both list K-5 IIs as available.)
Pentax-imaging.com (err, rocih-imaging.com) still lists both
K-5 II and IIs. However, if you click on "buy" K-5 II, it offers
just a kit.

Amazon still has a few sellers listing K-5 II from $697,
and K-5 IIs starting from $792.

Best regards,

Igor

Nothing scientific, but yes.
They had a display demonstrating the difference between HD and
"classic multicoating" at Photokina, the difference was visible
(higher contrast). Not sure if the "classic multicoating" was their
best SMC, and I wouldn't necessarily assume that.

Then, the Pentax Forums review is linked to in the original post. This
is the specific section we're interested in:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/hd-pentax-limited-primes/aberrations-and-flare.html
They were able to see a difference - when there's a strong light
source in the frame, at least - and so do I. I remember seeing a
Japanese quick test showing a similar difference.

As I see it, there's no reason for me to update my smc Limiteds to HD
ones; but I'd still want the new coating on new lenses.

Regards,
Alex

Jostein, I imagine you're somewhere near Heceta Lighthouse. It's north of
Florence, OR, very near the Seal Caves. Heceta is the best positioned
lighthouse I happen to have ever seen. Last year at about this same Dec
date, I made the trip up there, from the Sacramento, CA area, to attempt a
sunset shoot. Weather was grey and misty. After a couple days, we (wife and
I) gave it up. Wish I had the gumption to head up there again today.
I would guess, you can position yourself so that the sun sets just to the
left of the light as you view it from a pull-off viewing area immediately
south of small bay.

And try several focusing distances, because many of those lenses perform
fine at certain distances and disalign badly at others.
Typical failures happen at intermediate focusing distances (e.g. around
1-to-3 meters, or 3-to-9 feet), while usually even poor lenses perform well

SMC has changed considerably over the years since it was first

Uneven focus across the frame. Test against a grid with the lens wide open and
the camera square to the target. if the elements are misaligned, one side of
