Thanks, Rick. I played around with various crops and I think you mean
something like I choose for the thumbnail of this image on my 500px
page, see it here: http://500px.com/attila_b
I also like that version, but I kept the top part because of the
pattern formed by the dark dome on top, the light areas under the
spotlight, and the dark window on the bottom right. I like this
dark-light-dark pattern formed by arcs.

I just got my old Win ME machine running again recently. I needed to download
some software so connected it up and started the browser... IE 5.5. Wow. Not
worth bothering with any modern site then.

Firefox and Chrome require at least XP so I used my laptop for the download

FS Friday: Books, some good ones

2014-02-14 Thread Darren Addy
Well, I have myself with a little bill to get paid and so am parting
with a few photo books.
All will be sent out Media Mail cost (for U.S. delivery). Elsewhere
email me for a shipping quote (actual to your address).

Prices do not include shipping.

The Honeywell Pentax Book, Clyde Reynolds (Focal) 1975 First Edition, hardcover.
Covers the SP1000, SP F, and ESII cameras and accessories.
 $6

How to Select and Use Pentax Cameras, Carl Shipman (HPBooks) 1989
K1000, LX, P3N, SF10, SF1n
$3

A Guide to Photographing Rocky Mountain Wildlife, Weldon Lee (Westcliffe) 1996
$3

Giles Bensimon Photography, No Particular Order,
Review: "Approximately 200 hundred beautiful photos ranging from those
seen on the cover of Elle to beautifully lit black and white photos.
Each shot is full page in this larger than usual book.
This book really showcases his range as a photographer. Everything
from super sharp portraits to moody, slightly soft images.Any fan of
fashion and portrait work needs to add this to their library."
This is a large format title.
$16

Photography and the Art of Seeing, Freeman Patterson (4th Ed.)
Only selling this one because i discovered that I have TWO copies.
This is an essential book, IMHO, that I would not otherwise part with.
$10

Photo Design - Picture Composition for Black and White Photography
As discussed a few weeks ago on PDML. This is a First Edition, First
Printing copy of this highly regarded title. The hardcover book is in
wonderful condition, the dust cover is not (yellowed and tattered).
Still, it has done its job in protecting the hardcover and the real
reason for the purchase is what's inside. This book, particularly the
1st Edition, fetches high prices but this one is priced very
reasonably.
$45

3. Also, I am curious why two photos have such a weird text in the caption:
"ATTENTION EDITORS - THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN SUPPLIED BY A THIRD PARTY. IT

What would be the meaning and why it was left there?..

Any ideas?

My guess is Getty has an exclusive contract with the US Olympic
Committee to distribute US Olympic team images, but that Reuters have a
contract with Putin, Russia and/or the Kremlin. Getty is including the
Putin images from Reuters as a courtesy to the US Olympic Committee and
includes the disclaimer for legal reasons.

I don't have any problem with the images you single out. All but the OOF
foreground image are standard photojournalism from photographers who
don't rate a front row position in the scrum.

The OOF foreground image is obviously about the Putin watchers in the
background. Didn't someone recently post a PESO here where they used an
OOF foreground as a frame to make the background the subject?

The last one doesn't look over-sharpened to me. It's just a 60 something
year old guy photographed in an unflattering light. May have been
compounded by a relatively slow shutter speed combined with a slight
head movement during the shot.

OT - quality of images on Yahoo News (from Getty, AP, etc.)

2014-02-14 Thread Igor Roshchin

1. I understand that sometimes photo journalists get just what they can due
to the limitations imposed by the circumstances (security, etc.)
But I was rather disappointed that this quality images were used for
news coverage by respectable photo agencies (Getty), as well as news outlets
(Yahoo).

http://sports.yahoo.com/photos/putin-pays-unexpected-visit-to-usa-house-1392396537-slideshow/

In particular, I am talking about photos #5, #8, especially since there
are better photos in the set demonstrating the same.
http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/Sports/ap/201402140933344191615
http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/News/gettyimages.com/president-vladimir-putin-visits-usa-20140214-160023-689.jpg

I am somewhat split on #10. While I understand the intend, and it
delivers the messages (I like it with my reasoning portion of the brain),
the blurry foreground bothers my eyes.
http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/News/gettyimages.com/president-vladimir-putin-visits-usa-20140214-164151-026.jpg

I wonder what other PDMLers think about this set, and the photos that I
mentioned.

2. And as for image #9,
http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/News/Reuters/2014-02-14T154110Z_1029594953_GM1EA2E1TR202_RTRMADP_3_RUSSIA.JPG
I wonder if it the wierd way how Putin's face looks is the result
of some awkward compression, or result of oversharpening in an attempt
to salvage the image that was not quite in focus (or had some motion
blur)?

3. Also, I am curious why two photos have such a weird text in the caption:
"ATTENTION EDITORS - THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN SUPPLIED BY A THIRD PARTY. IT
IS DISTRIBUTED, EXACTLY AS RECEIVED BY REUTERS, AS A SERVICE TO CLIENTS"
What would be the meaning and why it was left there?..

Any ideas?

Cotty, I understand that.

I know that my own humor is often too geeky or too subtle (as in
"convoluted") such that sometimes some people just shrug shoulders.
Here is the opposite extreme: the authors make an attempt at jokes that
are too obvious to be funny. Jokes that are mocking other jokes (what I
call "second derivative" or "second order" jokes) are hard to make,
and usually they are not funny.

Some of the photos in that blog were made as a joke themselves. Even
if that original joke wasn't too funny, mocking it (and stretching the
context "by the ears") does not produce a good level joke.

Also, some of the joke attempts were falling into the category
"don't kick the dog when its down".

Cheers,

Igor

Re: PESO: Today's Snow

2014-02-14 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I have been back in New Jersey since Sunday.

There is, of course, snow in Hawai'i. On the Big Island, Mauna Kea
rises 13,803 ft (4,207 m) above sea level, and has snow every winter.
It's name means "?White Mountain" in Hawaiian, which demonstrates that
its snow cap was there long before the island was "discovered" by
Europeans. In fact, a hiker was lost in the snow on Mauna Kea 2 weeks
ago.
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mauna_Kea_from_the_ocean.jpg
Muana Loa, also on the Big Island, is just a few feet lower, and can
also have a snow cap. Occasionally, even Haleakala, on Maui, which is
10,023 feet above sea level, has a bit of snow at the summit. Three
years ago, there was a large patch of snow that we could observe from
the beach, where the temps were above 80 F. It disappeared within a
few hours, however.

Re: OT: Lenovo Computers

2014-02-14 Thread John

I also have a Toshiba Satellite, and I'm pretty sure it must be at least
as old as yours. It also came preloaded with Windoze Vista, which I
never quite took a shine to.

It came with two hard drives 160 GB & 240 GB, which I've subsequently
replaced with a 500 GB & a 1 TB drive. It has the 4 GB max memory & that
has been a problem ... or at least an annoyance.

Under Vista I had 3.5 GB usable memory. I installed 64-bit Windoze 7 so
I could take advantage of ALL of the installed memory, but under 64-bit
Windoze 7 I only have 3GB of usable memory. Something in hardware or
bios makes it allocate that other memory to video even though the video
sub-system has its own dedicated VRAM separate from the main memory &
there's no where I can find that lets me tell the computer that I don't
want to use main memory for the video subsystem.

Re: Lenovo Computers

2014-02-14 Thread John

I don't remember Lenovo being one of the Chinese vendors the IBM PC
Company used. When I was working there all of the Chinese vendors were
based in Taiwan.

IBM's home/consumer Aptiva line was sub-contracted to ACER. The IBM PC
(the commercial line) was still manufactured/assembled in the USA.

Lenovo acquired the right to use IBM's name on their PCs for 5 years
after they bought the PC Company in 2005. Expiration of those rights are
why Lenovo started putting their own name on their products.

IBM had great technology, but their marketing & business plans for the
PC Company sucked. There was always an inherent conflict between the PC
Company & IBM's core business - mainframes & services.

The PC Company always ended up as the red-headed step-child.

work. Apparently, the Lenovo warranty is one year, and the machine
was off warranty by manufacture date. Eventually, I was able to get
Lenovo to extend the warranty to the retail sales date, so I took it
in to the shop where a bad keyboard was diagnosed.

The repair depot has now decided that they have no knowledge of the
computer coming in to be looked at, and now the warranty has
expired.

Note to self, do not EVER buy another Lenovo computer.

Friends don't let friends buy Lenovo.

FWIW, swapping a keyboard out on a laptop is easier than picking your

Alan,

Thank you for your response.
I knew that you were in South Africa, but I was not sure if you took
it near where you live or elsewhere.

This park looks like a great resource!
I envy you!

I used to live in San Diego, California, where, in addition to a very
large zoo, there was a Wild Animal Park, which, as I just learned, they
recently renamed into Safari Park.

The animals were not confined to a cage, but it was not a totally wild
habitat either.

That makes a lot of sense. Don't forget to pick up a tablet stand of

I would think in this age of digital everything that Ricoh would have
incorporated auto ISO that raised your ISO when the 1.4x is attached so the
image as seen by the camera and in the LCD would remain fairly constant.

Pipe dreaming again Joe??

For $600 I would expect to see some sort of built in image intensification
within the 1.4x instead of just upping the ISO. No? :)

The image as announced by Pentax had a correction (more PS?) that allowed the
lens barrel to show above the label. The earlier shots displayed in 'rumors'
etc showed the label rising in it's center to almost obscure the barrel in the
center. Threw off the perspective.

Ultimately, time almost always proves me wrong, or mis-informed. It's a burden,
