Ok, so I'm out in nature chasing dragonflies with my camera and my husband

Not that you hear about anyway!

I just read in the news today about an NZ wakeboarder who "shattered his C4
vertebra" while training in the USA.

Re: Birds at Feeder (Wrap up)

2014-07-07 Thread Alan C

Thanks all for the comments & ideas.

I shall construct a more "natural" bird feeder. Even a feeding table. There
may be the odd squirrel, bushbaby or some tree mice but it is mostly the
birds eating the seed.

The Cut-throats & Bronze Mannekins arrive in large flocks & really gorge
themselves. The more timid species (like Blue Waxbills, Firefinches, Grey
Headed Sparrows & Yellow Eye Canaries) wait for lulls in the feeding frenzy.
If I move slowly, I can easily get quite close. The birds are used to me
now. What spooks them is shadows or a larger bird flying nearby. Also noisy
cars or motorbikes!

I agree that a K5 (or K3) would be better (ISO wise) but the K7 will have to
do! I'll try using a tripod & a remote & "catch in focus".

OT Sigma 18-35/1.8

2014-07-07 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Guys,

Well the now not so new Sigma Art series 18-35/1.8 lens is now finally
available in K-mount, I picked mine up today first shipment into my
local pushers this morning, I've played a little, it damn nice wide
open and its build quality is superb. It's a bit big though, only
slightly smaller than the DA*50-135 in stature so it has displaced my
Samyang 8/3.5 and DA 35/2.8 Macro from my go-to kit for the moment.

I have three shows to shoot before Sunday so it will get a good
work-out in place of my Sigma 17-50/2.8, conditions permitting. I will
report back on performance, particularly AF speed and lock wide open.

PESO -- Gliding along.

2014-07-07 Thread P.J. Alling
Stopped at the scenic overlook on the Mystic River, to take a couple of
shots of the resident tall ships. I had dropped the Kalamar 500mm f8.0
Mirror Telephoto into my light bag just because. That lens is capable
of amazing things, as well as producing unparalleled disappointments.

Manual focusing a super telephoto using the stock focusing screen in the
K5II can be a trial, but I took extra care that the in focus indicator
was lit before shooting off a series of shots at this kayaker. This is
the only image that was usable, and only at web size.

Equipment: Pentax K-5II w/mc Kalamar 500mm Mirror Telephoto f8.0

Re: K-r gets hot

The in body focusing motor aught to draw more than enough current to
make the camera body hot.

On 7/7/2014 7:51 AM, Darren Addy wrote:

This is a rather curious reply. What source, other than the battery,
is going to make the camera hot? If you are saying that the battery
was not hot when you took it out, but the camera was, then I can only
postulate that (since you said the camera was discharged) that your
timing was such that the battery itself (the source of the heat) was
no longer outputting heat but that the camera was still
storing/dissipating the heat that had come from the battery.

Irregardless of that battery appearing to recharge again, I would toss
it in the trash. It is clearly failing. Even if the battery was the
not the source of the heat ( I would wager it WAS) lithium ion
batteries hate heat and is it effectively "toast".

The overheating problem of lithium ion batteries is a known problem,
but relatively rare (hence few others with your experience).

Re: OT: Anyone have a good/cheap way to test Polaroid sx70 cameras?

2014-07-07 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Of course, the other cheap way to test an SX-70 is to send it to me and let me
test it. If it doesn't pass the initial functional test, you're out the cost of
postage. If it passes the first functional tests and you want me to test some
film through it, that will cost you the film pack too. Depending on where you
are, however, the postage could be more expensive than a second pack of film...

Re: OT: Anyone have a good/cheap way to test Polaroid sx70 cameras?

2014-07-07 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
It's a bit difficult to be frugal because ultimately you have to test it with a
pack of fresh, known good film.

- open by pulling up on the back of the viewfinder. Everything should pop into
place reasonably easily. DO NOT PRESS THE SHUTTER RELEASE!
- examine the bellows for holes, tears, etc.
- check the lens with a flash light to see that there's nothing in it that
might cause a problem.
- Look through the viewfinder and see if the lens focuses correctly (knob on
the right)
- Looking into the meter cell on the left with a flash light, turn the
light/dark control and see that the metering adjustment filter move smoothly as
you work the control through its range.
- open the film compartment (button on the RH side). Pull out any film pack
that might be in there.
- with a flashlight, examine the interior of the film compartment. The large
trapezoidal mirror on top should be reasonably clean and in one piece. Look for
obvious corrosion on the battery contacts. Check the film transport assembly in
the trap door... turn it by the gears on the RH side. It should roll smoothly
and easily. The rollers should be clean.

Next you need at least one pack of good film and preferably one empty film
holder with a known good battery and a couple of junk prints. (I always keep a
couple of empty film packs around with known good batteries for testing
purposes, along with a cover sheet and five or six junk prints.)

- If you have an empty pack with a known good battery, push it in, close the
film door. When you close the door, you should hear the mechanism cycle as that
is the cover sheet ejection cycle.
- Now release the shutter with the empty film pack while looking through the
viewfinder. You should see and hear the mirror cycle. Do this a couple of times
looking into the lens as well to be certain the shutter cycles.
- Presuming the mechanism cycles and seems to work smoothly, if you have a few
junk prints and/or a cover sheet, remove the empty film pack and reload the
pack with the junk prints and cover sheet. Be sure not to jam them - they have
to be flat - and be sure the little folding flap on the back of the cover sheet
is removed so it down't jam the picker arm. Once the pack is loaded, replace it
into the camera and watch the top print or cover sheet eject. Then cycle the
shutter and see that the prints eject smoothly.

- If you don't have an empty pack with a good battery handy, you have to do the
above three steps with a known good film pack. (The reason you don't press the
button and try it without looking first for corrosion or damage is that if
there's an old pack in the camera, many of these cameras have been sitting for
a very long time and the un-exposed prints have 'leaked' and bonded together.
Even if the battery has good charge, they can jam or break the picker mechanism
if they are bonded together.)
In this case, you simply have to test by fitting a known good pack and seeing
if the cover sheet is ejected, and whether the shutter and mirror cycles
through taking a photo and ejecting the print properly. So you lose at least
one exposure to pure testing.

- Okay, One way or another, you've figured out that the camera's reasonably
clean and the mechanism works. Consider the first pack of good film a test pack
and just shoot through it, exercising the focus and light/dark control.

Impossible Project SX-70 B&W or Color film packs are all the same price so
which you buy to try the camera doesn't matter on that score, but the B&W
processes in about three-four minutes where the color takes up to 40 minutes.
So I tend to use B&W to get things rolling first.

The Impossible SX-70 films tend to be a little faster than the original
Polaroid film, and like any old camera the shutter on many of these is a bit
slower than it ought to be now, so set the light/dark control to one or two
notches towards the darken side as a starting point. Presuming the camera is
healthy and you run a few packs through it, you'll find the exposure will drift
a bit through the first few packs until everything moves the way it ought to,
and then it becomes pretty consistent.

Also, the Impossible films are still a little light sensitive when they're
first ejected from the camera. Indoors, you can just cover them with your hand
as the prints eject and turn them face side down onto a table while they
process. Outdoors, you need to tape a flexible tongue or blind over the
outbound slot (I use Artist's Tape and a cover sheet) that protects them from
sunlight, then quickly fetch them into a bag or your pocket to process. After a
minute or so, the reagent is fully light-proof and they can be handled like
SX-70 prints of old while they process, but I just keep them in my pocket until
they're finished.

- The Impossible Project (the-impossible-project.com) makes film and sells
accessories and other stuff. Good folks, they are trying to do an impossible
thing and slo

Re: Pentax 645Z quick look

2014-07-07 Thread Bruce Walker
I agree, Darren; more than a bit overexposed. Everything, including
hair and irises seems too hot. This may have been shot by a chimper
without a meter. :-)

I'd also suggest that her makeup was not the best choice for use with
a beauty dish. Needed more powder -- there's too much glare and
highlights.

What does DxOMark say about the DR of the 645Z sensor? Unless it's a
big step backward from the 654D it'll _easily_ cover the whole of that
scene.

The Nikon doesn't take Pentax lenses. If you have used both, you won't

Re: 6x7 Shutter Button

I may well wind up doing that, or just use a pen or small screw driver
to press the shutter mechanism inside the 6x7 body. The guy at the local
repair shop was not sanguine about finding the part he would need to fix
the shutter button but was going to look for it. If he can find it, the
repair would be simple and inexpensive.

Most medium format lenses are much lower in absolute resolution than
35mm lenses. They don't need to be as good because they cover a much
larger film (or sensor) area and thus yield equal size prints with
much lower magnification and thus obtain very high print resolution
without the need for the MTF numbers required of 35mm lenses.
Interestingly, one of the exceptions to this is the Pentax 645
35mm/3.5 lens: It's reportedly superb even by 35mm standards and in
the early days of full-frame digital there was a small business in
Nikon-to-P645 and Canon-to-P645 adapters for people who wanted to use
this lens (I think Zorki or someone also made a shift or tilt/shift
adapter to take advantage of the medium format lens' large image
circle).

Sharpness is incredible, but I think the model image is a bit
over-exposed. Don't care for blown-out pixels in skin tone areas.
I have to believe the camera's sensor has more than enough dynamic
range for the studio scene (in all but the spectral highlights).

2014-07-07 Thread Zos Xavius
>From what I've heard the 6x7 lenses were superb and supposedly better
than the zeiss lenses hassy used on the V series and also better than
the 645 lenses. I don't know how true that exactly is, but I've heard
it repeated from various people that shot MF with pentax bodies. If
you factor 3-4 really good primes to match the D800, I'm guessing that
the price point doesn't look all that different, though I must say the
new 645 lenses are definitely not cheap by any means. You could build
a film era kit for what, somewhere between $1-2000? Some of those
lenses won't match the Z's sensor, but I imagine would at least keep
you in D800 territory. If you ask me, the D800 pushes glass hard and
that makes getting the best results out of it an expensive proposition
anyways. It takes fairly good lenses to match even a 24mp sensor, so
unless you just want at best 20-24mp images using 2nd rate glass. If
that's the case, you're still getting nowhere near the 645Z in terms
of resolving power. The pixel pitch and smaller format means
diffraction is going to cut in faster as well, negating the benefit of
lacking an AA filter. The D800 is diffraction limited at f5.6. The
645Z looks like its at f8 or so if this calculator I'm using is
correct. Probably a stop ahead.

I read that review a few days ago and considered posting it here under
the title "Rave Review of 645Z at Luminous Landscape". Seriously.

The only reason I didn't is that the 645Z is so expensive it's a
little irrelevant for virtually everyone here.

Yeah, maybe. Here is a moderate crop:
http://se.toralf.net/post/91074068478/strekkode2

Perhaps I should remove more. Or less. I can spend *hours* trying to
decide just that, once I start cropping, so I'm thinking it may be a
better idea to avoid it altogether ;-) In this case I ended up removing
the "empty" bits at the left and right, and letting the aspect ratio
(which I kept) decide how much I could get rid of at the bottom. If you
know what I mean...

necessary to get a high enough shutter speed for hand-held work &
unfortunately the K7 sensor is a bit noisy. Noise reduction smoothes the

Aw, c'mon guys, lighten up! The reviewers criticize the green button

that front at all. "Bottom line is superb IQ. "

"The "Z" is a real working pro's field camera in every sense. It's a

Re: For Ann-deer in color

2014-07-07 Thread Bob W-PDML
That's really nice. I saw a lot of wildlife, not all of it roadkill, on my ride
through France, including a couple of occasions when I was exploring little
lanes and spooked the deer. Lovely to watch them bounding off down the lane. I
expect they jumped in front of someone's car shortly afterwards.

Well, FWIW, I like the cranes in there. They contribute to what I feel as the
mood of the piece.

I really like the shot as a whole.

Bitching about the green button and auto iso? Really? Seems like they
had to find things to nitpick. You can set the green button to toggle
auto iso, but I guess they didn't realize that. The interface is
pretty damned customizable.
