Re: Marc Newson becomes Apple employee
He may be happy there's no viewfinder, but when I try to hold a camera out where I can see that 3 LCD screen, my hands shake it's too blurry to use anyway. I think it could have been a good (i.e. usable) design if they'd just offered an optional EVF to attach to the hot-shoe. I might even have bought one. I'm not sure what Marc Newson is going to do at Apple, everything I've ever seen from Apple looks like it was designed by Marc Newson. On 9/5/2014 9:34 PM, Zos Xavius wrote: The K-01 was rightfully laughed at by photographers while at the same time was praised in other circles and even won a design award. First and foremost I should speak about the design. Marc Newson has done an astounding job with shape and feeling of the K-01. You may have seen photos of the camera online with it’s bright yellow exterior. I opted for a white version, wanting to stand out from the crowd, but not necessarily glowing. The lines of the camera are extremely clean and simple. The body is made of machined aluminum which gives the whole thing an extreme feeling of sturdiness, much like the back of your iPad. It’s accented with a ridged rubber which helps you keep a firm grip on the camera. There’s nothing unnecessary on the K-01, just the bare minimum. I’m also happy to report that there’s no viewfinder on the K-01. It’s a digital camera with a 3″ LCD screen, why on earth would it need one? The camera also does a good job of hiding all of the ports under the rubber grip on the side of the camera, giving it an extremely unified feeling. http://www.thefoxisblack.com/2012/04/09/pentax-k-01-the-best-and-coolest-camera-ive-ever-used/ On Fri, Sep 5, 2014 at 8:01 PM, P.J. Re: Marc Newson becomes Apple employee
You might try a revised set of glasses. I have no problem working with an LCD as viewfinder for certain kinds of shooting. That said, I was interested in the K-01 as a vehicle for a minimum 2-lens system (FA43/1.9 and DA21/3.2 Limited, my last and favorite Pentax lenses...) but wanted an eye level viewfinder as well as the LCD. I like to have the option of an eye level finder. Marc and Sir Jonny Ive have worked together before and enjoyed the collaboration, so it's no surprise that he's come to Apple. Hi Mark: Have you used CombineZP? Save to download etc? Cheers, Christine On Aug 17, 2014, at 4:32 PM, Mark C pdml-m...@charter.net wrote: Hi Ann - For what you are doing, I think that the ideal would be to put the camera on a set of focus rails, focus in on the front edge and then just move the rails a little closer, shoot again, repeat till you get to the end. If you don't have the focus rails just turn the focus ring. Given that everything is stationary you can just turn the ring, shoot, repeat... For stacking software Photoshop can do it - not sure which version it first showed up in (maybe CS4?) It is done by using bridge to load the separate images into layers then just running the edit-align layers command followed by the edit-blend layers command. CombineZP is a stacking program that is freeware. Here is a video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B36OStuHjs As you can see - the interface is somewhat dated but the software works well. I have tried both turning the foucs ring while firing away and also pushing the camera in on the subject. For me turning the focus ring has worked best - BUT I am shooting live subjects in the fiel with the camera on a a monopod. The faster I can capture a bunch of shots the less likely the subject is to move. By nature, pushing in the camera on a monopod basically means moving it in an arc, which complicates the aligning of the images. So for me, in the field, it is K-3 on the fastest shooting mode (whcih is very fast) and a quick turn of the focus ring. Good luck! Is there stacking software that is free or inexpensive and work with or outside of photoshop elements 5.0? stan, I think the one you are using is pricey, yes? ann --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Re: Marc Newson becomes Apple employee
Actually it's a downgraded K-30 which was a related but different beast than the K-5. The downfall of the K-01 was it's cheapness, they reused as much of the hardware from the K-r, and some of the electronics from the upcoming K-30 with a smaller buffer, or maybe the same buffer size as the K-r with the rest of the K-30 image train. It doesn't matter, really. Hoya built a mirrorless camera as cheaply as possible using off the shelf components then hired Nuwson to put lipstick on the pig. Unfortunately it was still obviously a pig. There was really enough space in the K-01 camera body to put an EVF in upper left corner looking at the camera from the back, but that would have required actually designing a new steel frame rather than simply using the frame from the K-r and lopping off the prism. That's not to say it's a bad camera, it's actually a pretty good camera by all accounts. However it's control layout was awkward, and it's price at introduction was quite high for its feature set, most likely to pay for the lipstick. Re: Geso: A Gallery of Flight
#5 and #8. #5 is a nice perspective, not too high but pretty clearly a bird’s eye view. And nice subject matter. #8 is a nice perspective, nice subject, but this one I like because it is not obviously a bird’s eye view. You could have been standing on a farm wagon, at the top of a tallish stepladder, in the loft of a barn, etc. If it weren’t included within A Gallery of Flight, the whole business of what technology you used would not intrude on appreciation of the photo in its own right. stan On Sep 6, 2014, at 1:00 PM, Bill anotherdrunken...@gmail.com wrote: How pompous is that for a gallery title? Re: The Grinch at Starved Rock State Park
I agree the rock isn't very intersting in itself - just the history. THey probably fenced it after someone took a header off it at some point. On a road trip back in the 60's to visit my mom in Chicago My then hubby and I went to Clifty Falls.. it was 1967 and there had not been much rain... Clifty fails was Clifty faucet drip. Yes, walking the canyons would be very nice ann On 9/6/2014 11:48, Christine Aguila wrote: Thanks, Ann. There are fence guards at the top of the rock now. Place was packed given the Labor Day holiday, but we got there early, got our walk in, then left around 2:30 for lunch and a walk around Utica, Illinois, a quaint little town of a thousand with a three block Main Street area. I have a few questions: 1) My white balance setting, Shade, seems to capture a lot of yellow forcing me to dial yellow down during post-processing. I wondered if other K-3 shooters found this to their experience as well and what any compensation techniques have been employed. 2). I may be getting Charles Robinson's Fastpack 250. On my hike I took the Low Pro MicroTrekker, which is a great fit on the back, but I find it a tough bag to work out of, and it doesn't allow for a water bottle or much personal items. It does have two bottom tripod straps, but I want a vertical carry for the tripod on my next hiking camera bag. I hope to be doing more hiking in future, so I find myself now in the market for a hiking camera bag. If anyone has a nice hiking camera bag which can accommodate gear and personal items, is not a sloppy fit, and has a vertical carry for a tripod, I'd welcome the suggestions. 3). I didn't have my tripod with me on this trek because I'm actually an inexperienced hiker and didn't know what to expect of the trails or my ability, so I left the tripod at home. I will be taking it the next trip. All the shots in the gallery were handheld. Here's my gallery from yesterday's hike. It was a wonderfully fun day, and the park is really great. Need on procedure to AF Fine Adjust on K-3
I've never messed with the AF Fine Adjustment before, but I think I need to on the K-3. So those of you that have experience in this area... First, I'm wondering if the procedure is the same on K-3 as it has been for other Pentax models? If so, I don't need to limit my Googling to the K-3. Secondly, this works with third party lenses also, right? I've got 3 Sigma EX to 2 Pentax in the AF department. Thirdly, am I correct in thinking that this is of no use on manual focus glass? Fourth, what is your procedure? I'm thinking camera should be locked down on a tripod and I'm wondering what you use for a target. I've seen scales (like a tape measure or yardstick) angled at a 45 degree angle, with a vertical target that is perpendicular to the sensor plane at the focal point. At what distance do you do the measurement? Minimum focus distance? Medium focus distance? I'm also guessing you do this with the lens wide open so as to be able to most accurately define the in-focus point. What is your procedure on zooms? I'll stop with the questions now. Depending on how you use it, cables might not be an option:( Yep - using the wifi bacpac (I have a Hero 2) I get a 3 second delay - or lag - from the camera to the iPhone app display. If I hard wire a monitor to the camera there is no lag at all. The problem is that 99.9% of the time I cannot link the camera to a display and so I live with the lag. That said, I only view the iPhone app display of the camera's output while setting up the framing for the shot before locking off the camera mount prior to filming. The most usual situation for this would be mounting inside a car to get a shot of the front seat occupant(s). I use a 13 x 19 sheet of good paper, printed with a scale of lines approximately 3/8-inch apart. The lines cover the middle 2/3 of the sheet, but right in the center there is a blank area of about three inches square. In the center of the blank square is a single red dot of abotut 3/16 inch diameter. This is the focal point. I set the paper on the floor of my deck in bright shade. Then I mount the camera on the tripod. I place the camera about three feet away for a wide lens like the 16-50 and about 7 feet away for a long lens like the 60-250. I use single-point focus with the center dot active. I elevate the tripod head so the camera is looking at the focus dot at an angle of about 45 degrees. I test most lenses in the middle of the focal length range, but check at the wide and long ends as well. Generally, they’re very close. If there’s a discrepancy I’ll favor the focal length I use most. I look at the results on a large monitor and try to judge how many lines on each side of the dot are in focus. The forward lines won’t look the same as the rearward lines even when the focus is about the same. So you’re looking for sharpness. I try to count out which line is definitely out of focus. For example, for the 60-250 at 150mm, it might be line three or four. For the 16-50 at 35mm, it might be line six. Hope this helps. BTW, it’s worth the effort. I'll stop with the questions now. Re: Need on procedure to AF Fine Adjust on K-3
You can get a good approximation using Liveview and by previewing your shots enlarged on the LCD, then double check the “final” result using the regular AF system and viewing the result on your monitor. And using Liveview at 6-10x makes it easier to do the set up, verifying that the focal spot is on the center of the target. I have a target much like Paul’s. I have a tripod mounted stand designed to hold a slide projector. Remember those? I put the target on the stand at a 45° angle. Camera on tripod with camera level front-to-back side-to-side. Lens axis at same height as the center of the target. (All of this fiddling in the setup means that the sensor plane is perpendicular to the target, makes interpretation of the results much easier!) The distance from target is going to vary according to your lens. For a macro, you could work from 2-3 feet away. For a 300mm you’ll probably want to be 15-20 feet away. I’ve read commentary on choosing the “right” distance, don’t recall the details and don’t believe it matters that much. For a zoom lens, I calibrate at the most used end, then check the other end. Others start always at the wide end, then verify the long end. The K-3 manual has a brief discussion on the process. stan On Sep 6, 2014, at 6:40 PM, Darren Addy pixelsmi...@gmail.com wrote: Very helpful, Paul. Thanks for the (excellent/detailed) reply!
