Zeiss Touit for $25 on amazon

I doubt they will honor that price but its totally worth a shot. If my

Someone order one and let me know if they win the lottery!

Yosemite fail: It keeps opening iPhoto

2014-10-30 Thread Larry Colen
Several people said that they had been using Yosemite for quite some
time, that it worked quite well, and the new version of safari is
wonderfully fast.

Yes, the new version of safari, is nicely peppy. I'm fine with the
simpler pictograms, and in general I haven't had much problems with
Yosemite. However, one thing that is incredibly annoying is that every
time I insert an SD card to load photos into Lightroom, it automatically
opens iPhoto.

I did some research and it said that under iPhoto preferences, set the
action on when camera is connected to Open no application. Of
course, iPhoto would not even open to allow me to do this, until I
updated my iPhoto library to the new version. Bitch, moan, gripe.

I downloaded, upgraded, found that it was already set. Then the next
time I inserted an SD card, boom! iPhoto opens up again.

How do I disable this annoying behavior. Even if iPhoto were not
possibly the worst program that I've ever had the misfortune of using, I
still don't want it to automatically open.

Film-eating bacteria make art

2014-10-30 Thread Mark Roberts
Neil Montanus is an 87-year-old photographer who spent decades
shooting for Kodak. In the course of his job he did travel photography
all over the world and shots portraits of people like Walt Disney and
Gerald Ford.

A couple of years ago he found a carousel of slides he'd stored in a
damp corner of his basement and forgotten for decades. Bacteria had
eaten into the gelatine emulsion on the slides. Perhaps Neil did some
of the brown acid in the 60's, but he decided he liked the effect:

Re: Yosemite fail: It keeps opening iPhoto

It's a bug, obviously. Be sure iPhoto 9.6 is installed. Unset the option (pick
some other behavior) then set it again. Do the same in Image Capture.

Mine did this the first time I inserted a card, and hasn't since.

Yes, the new version of safari, is nicely peppy. I'm fine with the simpler
pictograms, and in general I haven't had much problems with Yosemite.
However, one thing that is incredibly annoying is that every time I insert an
SD card to load photos into Lightroom, it automatically opens iPhoto.

I did some research and it said that under iPhoto preferences, set the action
on when camera is connected to Open no application. Of course, iPhoto
would not even open to allow me to do this, until I updated my iPhoto library
to the new version. Bitch, moan, gripe.

I downloaded, upgraded, found that it was already set. Then the next time I
inserted an SD card, boom! iPhoto opens up again.

How do I disable this annoying behavior. Even if iPhoto were not possibly
the worst program that I've ever had the misfortune of using, I still don't
 want it to automatically open.

Re: HD Pentax DA 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 ED DC WR

2014-10-30 Thread Mark C
My only comment is that Ricoh Pentax is now producing 7 zooms in the
normal / long normal zoom range:

16 -85 f3.5-5.6
16-45 f4
16-50 f2.8
17-70 f4
18 - 55 f3.5-5.6
18 - 55 II f3.5-5.6
18-135 f3.5-5.6

Obviously there are differences in focal length, features, etc. The
16-50 f2.8 really is in its own category and there is clearly a
significant difference in zoom range from the shortest (16-45) to the
longest (18-135). But - the line up also seems to be somewhat redundant
and I for one would like to see new products that help diversify offerings.

Well, since the lens only became official less than 24 hours ago none

folks at PentaxForums will be happy to do so ;-)

This looks like an excellent travel/casual zoom. Probably smaller and lighter
than the 16-50, and frankly with the ability to shoot at ISO6400, the constant
f/2.8 on the 16-50 isn't really necessary these days for me either.

Depending on cost, I might seriously consider buying this one and selling the

Any comments on Sigma 10-20 f3.5 or Pentax 15mm?

2014-10-30 Thread Sandy Harris
I am trying to put together a lightweight kit for travel. Looking at
web reviews, I'm inclined to think the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 is a lens I
want. However, the Pentax 15mm is considerably lighter and reportedly
very good.

i am looking for comments on those two lenses or on alternatives.

Background, for anyone who cares:

My current walking around combo is A 50 1.4 on K-X. That is likely to
get upgraded to DA 50 1.8 on K-3; Adorama have a bundle that includes
both and I'll buy it unless they cancel before next week when I'm
expecting funds. That is my favorite focal length, all I need for most
street shooting.

I need a wider lens for landscapes and architecture including interior
shots. I have the 16-45 f4 which goes more-or-less wide enough, but it
is heavy and not all that wide, so I will likely leave it with my
daughter who also shoots Pentax. I also have the A 28 2.8 but it is
not wide enough to be the main lens for this and is not autofocus;
I'll bring it since it is light but will probably not use it much.

The Pentax 21 f3.2 limited looks good but may not be wide enough.
Tokina 11-16 f.2.8 does not seem to be available for Pentax.

External Hard Drives - $19

2014-10-30 Thread Bipin Gupta
Here is a simple no fuss solution for those of us not requiring RAID
(which uses 2 identical hard drives). And this one costs a paltry $19
at Amazon:-
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FDLCTQO

This docking station claims to work with 2 TB and larger SATA drives
in both the 2.5 3.5 inch sizes. It is hot swappable too.
The reviews are pretty friendly too for this USB 3.0 machine.

I am trying to put together a lightweight kit for travel. Looking at
web reviews, I'm inclined to think the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 is a lens I
want. However, the Pentax 15mm is considerably lighter and reportedly
very good.

I tried out a Sigma 10-20 once and found it had barrel distortion that
bothered me. It seemed to me that it distorted differently on the
horizontal and vertical axes. Fixable in post, of course (and normal
barrel distortion even easier to fix) but I'd just rather not if I can
avoid it). So I went with the Pentax 12-24 even though it is 2mm
longer at the wide end. Splendid lens.

Nice capture. By the look of the mountain it would appear a polarizer filter

2014-10-30 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Jack,

This is a very interesting image that made me wanting to go to that area
again.

As Ken wrote, either a polairizer or some post-processing
(presence and/or selective sharpening in LR or unsharp mask in PS,
possibly combined with selective (for the blue color) contrast
enhancement)) would help removing some haze from the back.

That would make this image even stronger.

On another hand, I suspect it might then look _differently_.

I've been a part time contributor, part time lurker, occasional PUG
submitter, most time inactive member of this list for probably 15 years
or so. I used to follow the list daily and contribute some, but over
time the list changed with a higher percentage of the posts about PESOs
and GESOs and my life changed with kids, etc. so I decided I couldn't
follow regularly. However this is the #1 best source of information
for my Pentax equipment so I periodically check the archives or pop in
for a question. When I do, I usually ask my question, get my answer
and then turn digests back off and go back to checkimg the archives
periodically.

However, apparently now that I'm again and can't turn the digests back
off until Nov. 1, I decided to join the fun. Several weeks back I was
able to spend a few days on a trip being intentional with my

My question is how much better will this lens be than my current zoom
lens, the bDA 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR?

This looks like an excellent travel/casual zoom. Probably smaller and
lighter than the 16-50, and frankly with the ability to shoot at ISO6400,
the constant f/2.8 on the 16-50 isn't really necessary these days for me
 either.

Depending on cost, I might seriously consider buying this one and selling
 the 16-50.

A bit of Google brought me to the announcement page on PentaxForums..

The US retail price for the 16-85mm is $746.95 USD, and it is expected to
 ship in late November.

HD is the new lens coating technology, replacing SMC.
