Re: PESO: Mustang

2016-05-11 Thread Ken Waller

The handling is…. almost German

In some racing circles the Porsche GT4 is keeping the GT 350R honest.

I haven't heard one in person but by all reports the wail of the flat crank
in the GT350R is really special.

The new Mustangs are *very* good, especially from a bang for the buck
standpoint.

The GT350R is simply amazing. I had a chance to flog one around the track
at Laguna Seca for a couple of laps before they started shipping. Revs up
to… seems like infinity. The handling is…. almost German. (It is, in
fact capable of matching 911 lap times, at half the price) And the sound…
oh the sound….

I wonder if selling a kidney on the black market would cover one?

This edition is among the best ever IMO. Still not a 'sports car' but a
great performance product, especially with the new IRS rear end.

Simpson's motors in Phalaborwa recently dumped their GM dealership in
favour

of Ford. This morning I noticed they had this Mustang 5.0 GT fastback on
offer. We have never had anything like this available locally before.
The

price is R819 000 (~$60 000) which is about twice the US price with 45%
import duty added.

file size of K-1 -- Wow! And no lag from in-camera processing

2016-05-11 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I just read:
"A K-1 DNG file is approximately 50 megapixels, the files with pixel shift
resolution turned on approximately 170 megabytes in size."
(Source:
http://www.mycameratravels.com/first-impressions-with-the-pentax-full-frame-k-1/
)

I understand, that 170 MB contains essentially 4 images. But still, Wow!

One interesting fact mentioned in that review:
"In previous models, switching on all in-camera lens corrections were
giving some delay in processing and writing of the image files. With the
K-1 I did not have the feeling that there was any lag in processing these
corrections."

Because of the delay, I've turned any in-camera processing off in my K-5
IIs. If I'd ever get K-1, the absence of the lag could be a good reason to
enable some corrections.

GESO: Macros

2016-05-11 Thread Stanley Halpin
I walked up the drive this evening headed for the Bleeding Hearts which are
about past their prime. Too much breeze, I am not pleased with any of those
shots.
I came back instead with these three shots: a trillium and two of a magnolia
blossom just past its prime.

Two with the 645Z and FA120 macro, one with the K-1 and D FA 100 macro.

http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p157372976

BTW. I remembered to raise the setting for the visible image size for these as
well as for the shots in my earlier gallery doing vignetting tests and more
recently comparisons of macro shots with K-3 vs K-1 with and without
pixel-shift in FF and Crop modes, and a 645Z shot of the same setup.
http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p1033969621/h79536f21#h79536f21

Larry, I’ll see about posting some 1000x1500 pixel slices from those 6
comparison shots.

Re: PESO: Mustang

2016-05-11 Thread Nicole Jacque
The new Mustangs are *very* good, especially from a bang for the buck
standpoint.

The GT350R is simply amazing. I had a chance to flog one around the track at
Laguna Seca for a couple of laps before they started shipping. Revs up to…
seems like infinity. The handling is…. almost German. (It is, in fact capable
of matching 911 lap times, at half the price) And the sound… oh the sound….

I wonder if selling a kidney on the black market would cover one? ($62,000
sticker)

they have been deleted.

Awesome! Thanks! As expected, at this resolution they look great, I haven't
had the chance to download them yet.

For those of us who are both pixel peepers and lazy (I can't be the only one)
any chance of also posting a small 1500 pixel wide crop out of the middle of
each?

Larry, I’ll do this if you can tell me how to select a 1000x1500 pixel section
of an image from within LR. I know how to change the aspect ratio of a crop, I
know how to put in a custom ration, but I don’t see a way to specify a specific
size.

The way I would do it, which would be close enough for me:

Press "i" until the text on the screen shows the size of the image in
pixels.

Select the photos
Make virtual copies (propeller-' on the mac)
hit R
select the aspect ratio
Move the corners until the size of the image is close to 1000x1500
I'm not going to sweat it being off a bit.

There is a chance that you'll end up with different resolutions on the
photos of different cameras. You may want to go and trim the bigger
ones down, or just pick a crop where the highest resolution is still a
comfortable size to view at 100%

Yes, I know that what matters is not the quality of the image on the
pixel level, but sometimes, it's the performance out on the raggedy
edges of the fiddly bits that matters, if only for bragging rights.

coming at this late, i am shopping for a new (used) laptop so i have a sense
of the market, and yes, that price seems just a bit high unless there are
some major perks (e.g. remaining AppleCare warranty, accessories, large SSD)

it's hard to be sure without getting into some details

if it's really three years old (2013 model), it's a "Retina" model, which
means non-upgradable, and thus 4GB is a sign of a lower-end model; if it
happens to be a 2012 model, you'll see from the link below that is a
transition year — some models were Retina and some not — so it may be
expandable, but 4GB still likely indicates a lower-end model

if you want a low-end model, i think for that price you should be able to
find a 2014 with some AppleCare left (AppleCare warranty lasts three years,
and is a big plus on a used Mac)

EveryMac is a very good reference to tell the difference between models,
however i find their estimated used prices to be much too high

How bad is the vignetting at 5.6? You're getting quite a bit of diffusion
softness at f14.

I can see some vignetting in the corners even at f/14,

I'll continue to use the lens even on the K-1.

Sorry, Larry, but I do not appreciate the presentation (even though there

is some reasonable rational behind it.): Too much fluff/hype and
very little essence. All of that could be summarized in one
sentence: "Do not OVERDO!" or "Use your head, you stupid!".

Ten videos of 4-10 minutes each for that stuff? It could easily
have been covered in one 5-minute video. This is a prime example of
the misuse of video on the web: Doing it because it's easy to do
(just use screen capture software for the video and real-time
narration) rather than because it's the best way of delivering the
message. I see tons of things like that that are only in video form
because those responsible are too fscking lazy to *write* (as
provide a few screen shots).

Back in the Renaissance we used to send minstrels strolling round
Europe singing at painters telling them what not to do with oil
paint. How we laughed when that bloke from Vinci overdid his sfumato
gimmick! Every bloody time, especially on that soppy cow,
Gherardini's missus.

And that Brunelleschi, would he draw a proper picture with everything
piled on top of everything else? Would he fuck! It was all
perspective, perspective, perspective. Knobhead. I bet he got his
idea for the dome when saw himself in a mirror.

That Michelangelo though, he knew what he was doing. Big muscly
blokes with tits, that's what a proper painting's about, I can tell
you. None of that poncy chiaroscuro crap from him.

Cheers! Vasari

Re: K-1 plus Grip

2016-05-11 Thread Stanley Halpin
Pentax used to sell a (rebranded?) “grip strap” for IIRC the PZ-1p. I loved it!
Ever since I have searched in vain for a strap that fits as well on the various
cameras I have owned. The ones I have tried either don’t fit well or their
connection to the camera interferes with the tripod plate. What I have settled
on is the OP/Tech wrist strap which provides some minimal security against a
dropped camera plus a way to hang the one camera off my wrist while using
binoculars or another camera. But Paul’s report has me thinking I may need to
buy a battery grip for the K-1…

to how big that discount is.

While I'm really glad that the K-1 is selling so well (Pentax is
doomed!), I'm personally disappointed that Ricoh is not offering the
marketing incentive to buy it as a kit. At this point I need to do the
calculus of dividing how much money I might save by waiting by how long
I expect that I'd have to wait for the deals to come out.

This is, of course, moot if nobody has any in stock. B says out until
July, Adorama claims to have a few in stock, as does Cameta.

Re: GESO: Yuma County Colorado tornadoes, Saturday May 7, 2016

2016-05-11 Thread Mark Stringer
Thanks for that! Scary. The stuff my nightmares are made of. Really
good work.

On 5/9/2016 12:47 PM, Darren Addy wrote:

I had my most successful chase day ever on Saturday (saw 3 tornadoes),
but not my most photogenic photographs.

I left North Platte, NE at 4 PM hoping to get to Holyoke or Wray, CO
to see some Colorado Front Range tornadoes. Got to the rest area at
Julesburg, CO (on Interstate 80) and grabbed a free Colorado road map.
Then proceeded south of Julesburg on Hwy 385. A line of supercells was
already forming just west of 385 and they were moving to the N/NNW as
they were close the surface low. My target was the southernmost storm
that was moving N/NNE.

The cell just north of that one had been tornado warned once already
(as I was leaving Julesburg) but I did not want to target it for long,
fearing I would be run over by the hail core of the storm coming up
behind it. Still, I thought I would keep an eye on it as I went by it
on my way to the more southerly cell.

I saw what appeared to be a Rear Flank Downdraft (RFD) cut in that
storm as I came along side. When it was clear that a funnel was
forming I pulled off the highway (there was no shoulder) and jumped
out to take pics. Here is the tornado, which I believe is in contact
with the ground (but can't be positive because of a hill in between
us).

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/26880136486/in/dateposted-public/

While I was taking the photos of this tornadoes entire life cycle, the
CSWR convoy of radar trucks went flying north past me up the highway,
with a bunch of chasers following them. ( http://www.cswr.org/ ) Their
target did not affect mine, I still thought that the storm approaching
Wray would be the most interesting of the day. It was.

The tornado that made national news began over the city of Wray as a
tiny little funnel in the sky that I captured as I was traveling back
through Wray after exploring a bit to its west. In the amount of time
it took me to reach the intersection of Hwy 385 again, it has already
reached the ground with a needle-like appearance:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/26847394921/

Quickly it morphed into a larger tornado:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/26309615994/

Fortunately, this part of the front range is sparsely populated, but I
did see one house along the highway that lost its roof, drove over
downed powerlines across the highway (driving around a 5th wheel
trailer that had been deposited directly in the highway) and captured
this image of the receding tornado with some parked semi trailers that
it tossed around.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/26915145455/

I later saw a 3rd tornado out my passenger window, but by the time I
got off the road it had already lifted. I have no idea how long I was
oblivious to it as I drove along side it, but it was a good couple of
miles away and moving away from me.

All in all, I was very happy with my forecast, my route, and my
targeting. I only wish I had gotten some more photogenic images,
rather than documentary ones.

I'm not Paul ;-) but I used to use this type of grip strap on a Canon
1DmII and most of the time I just put my hand over the whole thing (eg
not actually slipping my fingers thru the actual strap) and never had a
problem. When I wanted assurance that the camera was not going to fall
from my grip, say photographing over a drop, etc, then I slipped my
fingers in. The tension has to be just right for a useful grip. And of
course the setting for your bare hand doesn't also suit a gloved hand,
so 'winter' setting required a looser fit.

I think the DA 18-250 is one too, but from a later era.

The origanal lens cap from the 28-200 was a Tamron style with Pentax

I lost that lens cap in Savanna GA just before finding a Tamron lens

Flexibility of per-account settings and notifications is yet another

I could do that, but Blurb doesn't give you the option of assigning a
different ISBN to hardcover and softcover versions of the same book,
which is technically how things are supposed to be done. So as far
Blurb is concerned, I have to treat the hardcover and softcover as two
different books rather than two different options for the same book.
(Technically, I should use yet a third different ISBN for the Image
Wrap hardcover, but there's only so much of my own money I'm willing
to throw at this...)

What really pisses me off, though, is that Blurb won't let the buyer
select the paper options for a book when they purchase it. Blurb has a
couple of options for higher quality (but more expensive) paper. But
they make the book seller choose one and only one.

Re: Mystery geometry

2016-05-11 Thread Stanley Halpin
Your note came through.

What comes on the camera is the traditional typical triangular split gizmo,
with an added plastic sleeve that protects the camera body from scratches. The
645Z has a similar plastic collar on the triangular piece.

The triangular gizmo comes attached/installed. I find it mildly interesting
that they bother to call out such an item when listing the features of the
camera.

Larry, I’ll do this if you can tell me how to select a 1000x1500 pixel section
of an image from within LR. I know how to change the aspect ratio of a crop, I
know how to put in a custom ration, but I don’t see a way to specify a specific
size.

By the way, when you go to my Zenfolio gallery with these images, you can move
between the images with left-right arrow on the key board. If you alternate
back and forth between the single-shot vs. pixel-shift versions (either in FF
or in crop mode) you can see a subtle color shift…

Re: PESO: Mustang

2016-05-11 Thread Ken Waller
With this edition Mustang, Ford engineered the car to be available worldwide
right from the assembly plant. Previously, cars had to be converted for the
various markets outside North America. It's proven to be a successful strategy
as sales of the car, in markets where it was generally not available have been
very good. Latest sales figures show the Mustang outsold Porsche sports cars in
Germany.

This edition is among the best ever IMO. Still not a 'sports car' but a great
performance product, especially with the new IRS rear end.

The Mustang GT350R is the first high volume car to offer carbon fiber road
wheels.

Go Ford !

Re: Does Pentax make the new D-FA 28-105 Zoom?

2016-05-11 Thread P.J. Alling
The FA is a Tamron rebadge, from the same era as the FA 28-200 rebadged
Tamron.

I think the DA 18-250 is one too, but from a later era.

The origanal lens cap from the 28-200 was a Tamron style with Pentax
emblazoned upon it.

I lost that lens cap in Savanna GA just before finding a Tamron lens cap
of the same size lying in the road, while shooting the St Patrick's Day
Parade there, a few years ago.

Re: K-1 plus Grip

Yes, that's it. The grip gives an extra 3cm or so depth so ones' hand is not
such a tight fit vertically. I'll have to see if I can find a S/H or pirate

You have to adjust the strap just right. Tight enough to help you hold onto
the camera but loose enough to allow full movement. The K-1 battery grip was
obviously made with a hand strap in mind and even has an attachment point.
The strap is one meant for use with a battery grip.

I’ve used a battery grip with all my Pentax DSLRs going right back to the
*istD. This is the best one yet. It really provides a great handle and
just fits my paw perfectly. The camera is chunky but not really very big,
and I find it’s not enough to hang onto without the grip, particularly
when using big lenses handheld. Pictured here with the A 50/1.2, it makes
a pretty picture. In truth, when I shoot with this, I screw a metal
Visitor lens hood into the A 50, but it kind of spoils the picture :-).

I imagine they use the term "triangular ring" because it's a type of

Re: It appears some sigma lenses have clearance issues with the K-1

Zos, I won’t get “all bent out of shape” but I must say there announcement
below leaves me with more questions than answers. I have one Sigma lens, the
APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM, last on their list.
Today or tomorrow I was going to pull it out of the to-be-sold box, put it on
the K-1 and take some test shots, then get ready to list it for sale. So,
thanks for the heads up, but I wonder:

Does Sigma’s offered repair service mean that they will repair my camera if
their lens damages the camera? Or are they offering to fix/modify the lens
mount so it wont cause damage? Maybe they will offer a buy-back program…

It appears some sigma lenses have clearance issues with the K-1

2016-05-11 Thread Zos Xavius
Before everyone gets all bent out of shape, let's wait to see what
sigma will do for their customers on this issue first. They have said
they will offer repairs for the issue.

http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/index.php?route=information%2Fnews_id=194

Thank you for purchasing and using our products.

We have found that some SIGMA interchangeable lenses for Pentax mount
could leave a small scratch on part of the camera body when they are
attached to the PENTAX K-1, released by RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. on
April 28th, 2016. In this circumstance, please do not use the
following lenses for Pentax mount on the PENTAX K-1.
We are planning to provide a repair service for this issue. We will
make a further announcement on our website when specific details, such
as the service period, are finalized.
In addition, please also refer to the usage notice related to this
announcement below.

Phenomenon
When some SIGMA interchangeable lenses for Pentax mount are attached
to the PENTAX K-1, the upper part of the mount can be scratched.
※This phenomenon is due to the interference with the shape of the
upper part of the mount on the PENTAX K-1 camera body and it does not
occur to any cameras other than PENTAX K-1.

A small gallery here. I didn’t keep these full size as the vignetting at

The first image is from the 24/2.0 [Yes Larry, NOT 1.4] to show the scene. Then
one or more shots from the DA 15mm, 35mm macro, 40mm, and 55mm and one from the

The K-1 locks focus great in daylight. Haven’t had enough experience with other
light to say for sure, but it makes action sports shooting easy. Hid behind the
corner of the house with the K-1 and the 150-450 and shot the kids shooting
hoops. That lens is a nice fit with the k-1 and battery grip. Good balance for
handheld shooting. If I was doing this in earnest, I’d use a monopod and shoot
at ISO 400 or 800, but not a problem without it. All these are at ISO 1600,
which is nice and clean with this camera.

Subject: GESO: Old cars with a new camera.

My charming wife and I go out for breakfast once on the weekend.
Saturday mornings, a small group of old car buffs meet for breakfast, and
they bring old cars.

Shot with the K1 and the 31mm LTD.

I swear to god, if someone told me twenty years ago that digital would
eventually give this sort of quality, I would have laughed in his face.
The pictures are a bit large.
Note the inadvertent selfie.

Enjoy.

I don't know where I went wrong, but it wasn't a problem before.
I've been reading some emails from MIT classmates.
Maybe they got me into this situation.

"Lugs" are the attachment points built permanently into the body. A
split ring or strap might connect to the lugs. See, for example:
http://www.gordyscamerastraps.com/information/attaching.htm

I imagine they use the term "triangular ring" because it's a type of
split ring. I probably would have gone with "triangular split ring."
