Thanks, Everyone! Much appreciated. I have been looking at many of the
vendors suggested; I just wanted to reach out and see if anyone had a vendor
they really liked and recommended.

Thanks again!

That's tempting. It also inspired me to ask if Samyang was making a

Manual focus, manual aperture.
Hold out for a used A*85/1.4 (at 2-3 times the price I expect).

It would be nice if Ricoh could replicate some of those great old fast
prime lenses as D-FA lenses (or whatever they're designating their new
lenses for the K1). I'd almost certainly buy a D-FA 50 f/1.2 WR even if
I had to hold off buying another guitar to afford it.

What sort of USB and networking do they have? With an iMac, you really
need external drives, at least for backups, although with gigabit
ethernet, NAS may work.

"four USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire "800" port, built-in AirPort Extreme, and

I think this can accept any SATA3 HDD & I figure I could get a Macally
keyboard & mouse for it like I have for my Mac Mini.

Look on iFixit and see what mods they discuss and support for it.

How hard would it be to replace the missing HDD & install OS X?

Judging by mine, not terribly hard, just be aware that putting in an
aftermarket drive may mean that it doesn't have temperature sensors, and
may also mean that the fan is always on. I pretty much did that with my
24", then ended up giving the system to a friend a while later.

I was looking at hard-drives from the same place recommended for memory
upgrades in David Brooks Lightroom thread.

If that is of the vintage that you can use it as a thunderbolt monitor,
that would probably be a better bet.

Looking it up by S/N on EveryMac.com, it's mid-2010 & no mention of
Thunderbolt.

Or am I looking at biting off more than I can chew here?

What's your goal? At this point, my feeling is that the best deals are
the old Mac Pros that are actually expandable.

I don't really have a goal yet. I was just thinking about maybe getting
an iMac to mess with & this has a much lower price than a complete one.

Weather forecast around here ain't good - partly to mostly cloudy, but
I've got a good spot with a low horizon to the southwest, so I intend to
get out there and try. If I get lucky, maybe there will be a break in
the clouds when I need it.

Don't know what the forecast is like in the central & western U.S., but
those of you out there, now know about it if you want to make the attempt.

I had to run an errand after posting this & the weather forecast for
tonight was Clear & Cold. Since tomorrow night is supposed to be mostly
cloudy, I headed out to the spot I'd picked out to take photos of the
crescent moon tonight, hoping I might catch the comet in the field of view.

I just got home a few minutes ago & haven't had time yet to download the
images I did get to have a look at them on the big monitor.

I didn't see the comet & don't think I managed to capture it in any of
the photos, but the trial run helped because I figured out a 300mm lens
isn't going to have a wide enough field of view to capture it.

I'll try again tomorrow night with an 80-200 f/2.8 zoom.

$400, shipping included. PayPal OK.

That's tempting. It also inspired me to ask if Samyang was making a
50/1.2 and I found a current 85/1.2 for Pentax

http://www.adorama.com/MTK8512PK.html?gclid=CjwKEAiAqJjDBRCG5KK6hq_juDwSJABRm03hGhIolHC6F4mRZJMxt7JEH_VUzoxOVh9xWkLZA58YuhoCHRXw_wcB

It seems that Samyang does make a 50/1.2, but not in Pentax mount.

I just picked up a pair of lenses at Costco. Great prices, good service
and they seem to be acceptable quality. At the local Optometrists,
progressive lenses would run about $1000 once the dust settled, they
were $200 at Costco.

I do as little noise reduction as possible in camera. I don't trust a
two dollar processor to make intelligent decisions, much less the people
who program it. I much prefer to just capture the basic data, in RAW,
then throw enough processing power at it with my desktop that Seymour
Cray would have been green with envy.

I've taken shots with a K-5 at 3200 that had horrible noise, and I've
got some taken at 10K-25K that look like the color version of Tri-X. One
trick is that you have to manage the whole process to optimize the final
image. Sufficient exposure is key, and contrary to not blowing out
highlights. In challenging light, when I can, I will bracket my shots
for this very reason, because it's quicker and easier to just bracket
the shot in the first place than it is to take the shot, check the
histogram, and then if need be take more shots to try to nail the
exposure. Also, when you chimp the preview, you're chimping the in
camera JPEG and JPEGS always lie.

I really liked "Hey!"

It's a great bit of street photography. I love the ginger's expression and the

I might even say this one

RE: GESO - Coyles in New York

2016-12-30 Thread John Coyle
Thanks Alan - interestingly, we were quite happy with the philosophy of the
Cloisters, at least as
explained in their information. Most, if not all, of the pieces exhibited were
brought from Europe
from buildings which were either being demolished or were otherwise in
disrepair, and were
legitimately bought. Each of them has now been incorporated in the Cloisters
in a way that fulfills
their original function, where possible: e.g. a doorway is used as a doorway, a
window as a window,
etc. Statuses and niches are combined in a generally very appropriate way.

Re: Lightroom upgrades

2016-12-30 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
For RAM intensive apps like Photoshop, the more RAM the better. LR is a bit
less RAM intensive—through memory usage modeling, I've never seen it consume
more than 2.5G RAM in any operations by itself—but is much more critical on
disk space utilization and read/write performance once you have enough RAM to
keep it happy. I always maintain a minimum of 100G free space on the startup
volume and site the Lightroom catalog folder there, with the photo file
repository on a fast volume connected via the fastest available protocol, for
best performance.

OWC memory has been a little problematic for me. I bought 16G from them for the
previous Mac mini I had and found it caused display jitters. I switched to
memory bought directly from Crucial (crucial.com has a RAM selection tool)
after that and have not had a single problem with it.

Re: Lightroom upgrades

2016-12-30 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I have made it a standard policy when buying systems for the past decade or so
to max out RAM at purchase time (if not upgradeable) or immediately afterwards
(for upgradeable systems). I cannot see the point of running a system with a
less than optimal configuration for most of its life and then adding RAM at the
end of the system's life ... it does the least good that way and minimizes the
value you get from the system.

This has worked well for the past decade or so because RAM prices, while still
declining, have declined less than they did prior to that. The added utility
value of having as much RAM as the system might ever need has been greater than
the reduction in price. :-)

So Larry, does that help make the composition work for you?

Yes, like I said - should Larry take a chance and board the plane,
I'll be sure to take him to some very fine steak houses where they
serve excellent non-pork, non-kosher meat :-). And should the said
Larry insist, the kosher steak houses are out there to welcome him
just as well :-).

I will also echo the OWC recommendation. I have bought much RAM and hard drives
etc. from them over the years. Never a problem, good information on the web
site to help you buy the right things.
And there are videos out there showing the relatively simple process of adding
the new RAM once you have it in hand.

Mike, the modern Israel uses modern Hebrew, not Yiddish. Yiddish is
spoken in some communities, but it is mostly replaced by Hebrew.

As Larry said, Hag (H pronounced as "kh" in khaki) Sameach (ch
pronounced the same way) means "Happy Holiday".

I have been using MACramDirect.com for years - never had a problem with

like that they offer different price levels for each type of RAM. Worth

Re: PESO: Egyptian Geese

2016-12-30 Thread Jack Davis

Pretty much what P. J. said, Alan.
Lighting appears a bit flat which never compliments an image.
Visible grain, as the image is pulled up, doesn't appear to me to
be due to ISO noise, but there may have been some which was "despeckled" in PS.
Look forward to more tests with good lighting.
thanks for sharing, Alan!

learning curve ahead.

K7. Range about 60m. Heavy crop.

Having endured a couple of dry weeks in the low 40's (C), we finally had
75mm in the last 24hrs including a heavy fall of 45mm. Most of central &
northern Kruger got it so the pools & dams will fill up & the grass will
grow. Unfortunately, the mosquitos will soon be out in force too.

Super Telephoto lenses are a different world. That's a nice first
attempt. You really need a less noisy sensor, and either the
processing was a bit heavy handed or Flicker is especially lousy at
displaying images when it zooms in...

LIghtroom is not lightweight. You really need more ram. I don't know

take whatever they say and double it.

Besides being perpetually broke these days that's one of the reasons I
use a lot of old software. Once you figure out how to make it work, if
you can, it just flies on modern hardware, with less than optimal
amounts of memory.

Re: PESO: Egyptian Geese

2016-12-30 Thread P. J. Alling
Super Telephoto lenses are a different world. That's a nice first
attempt. You really need a less noisy sensor, and either the
processing was a bit heavy handed or Flicker is especially lousy at
displaying images when it zooms in...

K7. Range about 60m. Heavy crop.

Having endured a couple of dry weeks in the low 40's (C), we finally
had 75mm in the last 24hrs including a heavy fall of 45mm. Most of
central & northern Kruger got it so the pools & dams will fill up &
the grass will grow. Unfortunately, the mosquitos will soon be out in
force too.

Happy New Year to you all.
