Thanks for looking, Ann.

As I said, the land area seen in the background are the foothills of the
Wast Maui Mountains. They were quite distant from our boat and from the
whale. They appeared dim and "washed out" to the naked eye much more than
appears from this image.

RE: 4k tv, monitor, watching movies, displaying photos

2018-01-24 Thread John Coyle
Larry, Jan and I recently bought an LG 49-inch LCD (UHD) Smart TV, and it is
excellent for
displaying photos: I use an intermediate box which plays DVD's, reads memory
cards, and into which I
can plug my K5ii so that the images can be displayed direct to the TV.
If you get that brand in the USA, I can highly recommend it: cost was A$1195,
so about US$600. Of
course, taxes etc. may make it more or less expensive in your state.
And, yes, the oversaturated look is deliberate in so many areas these days,
including travel
advertising, but you can overcome it. My TV is set for a "Natural" saturation,
just like the K5ii.

Larry,

Just to address the oversaturated look at the stores:
It's a fad of the past NN years. So, I believe, the demo is designed to run in
the "high-saturation"
mode, whatever it might be called with the particular brand/model.
There are typical presets that are "sports, movies, entertainment, ..."
You might be able to use a remote and try to switch to a different mode that
would be more
realistic.

Tomshardware.com used to be a reasonable source for reviews on such devices.
I don't know how bad
they became in the recent past:
https://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-tvs,review-2224.html

I haven't been following the TV technology closely in the past few years,
although it is quite
possible that we might have to buy a new TV in the near future (as our 10-y.o.
TV might be dying).
So, please share back to the list if you find some other useful resources.

One thing I have in mind is that all the technologies-du-jour (Roku, Air-Play,
...) tend to be
becoming mostly obsolete quicker than the TV itself. So, it seems to me that it
might be a more
flexible solution to buy these "smart" technologies as a separate box, as
opposed to the one
built-in.

While I was watching the trends, Samsung was the best (LCD panels).
I wouldn't buy a plasma TV (if they still sell those).
I think OLED and QLED would be more expensive than LED, but they are also MUCH
more expensive.
So, LED or LCD would be the best bet on a budget.

Cheers,
Igor

I have been seriously considering doing something I've never done before,
buying a TV. I don't watch much TV and all of mine have been hand me
downs. I almost bought one about 15 years ago, but then my dad passed away
and I inherited his.

My ideal would be to get a 4K (UHD) in the 30-40 inch range that would
work well for displaying my photos when it's not being used for movies and
TV. Since I'm at least within radio hailing distance of the real world,
cost is a serious consideration. I've seen 4K TVs for around $300, but the
images on them at the store are always over saturated, and pretty bad
looking, but that might be due to source material that they try to make
"pop".

The other option would be to get something cheap until I could afford
something better a ways down the line. What sort of technology should I
look for and what would I need to pay to get it?

2018-01-24 Thread Paul Stenquist
Yep. My 65-inch 1080P Panasonic plasma failed after about 13 months, and it
took the service people a month to figure out what was wrong. On the other hand
my first flat panel, an 10K 60-inch Pioneer 720p was great for about 6 years.
But Pioneer was losing money on Plasmas, even with sky high price tags, and
they got out years ago. The Panasonic plasma has been doing well for about two
years since the fix. It’s on the lower level and is used mainly by my son to
play video games. I have a 75-inch Samsung QLED 4K in my theater room, and it’s
awesome. Been flawless for about two years.

But, they are the most unreliable TV sets. In my work, I've learned
about those from the people who were very close to (or even worked for)
the R department of one of the major TV manufacturers.

Roughly, a half of the price (if not more) you pay (paid, as they are
almost extinct) for a plasma TV set is (was) for the warranty. The
percentage of warranty replacements /repairs was very high.

The curious thing is that it was not a QC-based problem. Rather, it
is a fundamental problem originating from the physics of the very process
used there: plasma environment is aggressive for the materials.

Re: Video cameras

2018-01-24 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I've been shooting some videos using Pentax K-7 first, and then K-5iiS.
The link posted by Cotty is a reasonable description of pro's and con's of
shooting videos with Pentax cameras.

While professional videographers indeed use MF, people who are not used
to pull focus (and don't have dedicated focus pullers) may have problems
with shooting e.g. sport events. AF can miss (by jumping on a wrong
target), but on average it can do better then a person with no experience.

For shooting video with a Pentax DSLR, I have a couple of hints (based on
the mistakes I've made):

1. Switch exposure metering to the matrix mode (or center-weighted
matrix), NOT the center mode. Otherwise, you will have wild (and annoying)
swinging of exposure when you are panning if there are dark and light
spots.

2. There is only one parameter you can control (at least with K7 and K5):
aperture. There is, however, an effective exposure time for each of the

frames.
While with the MF, you might have a desire to enhance the DoF by
bringing the aperture down, in low light that might result in a slow
effective exposure time, which would make the video to appear less sharp,
especially when there is a fast motion (due to the motion blur).

Aldo keep in mind this two limitations:
a) The length of a single video file is limited.
In the highest resolution mode on K-5iiS, it is about 8 minutes.
So, you have to stop and start again, for a new file to start.
Depending on the speed of your SD card, there could be a delay before
you can start (while it is finishing recording the buffered information.)

Which brings up yet another important point: Use a fast SD card!
(Just "class 10" is not sufficient.)

b) Fast heating of the sensor limits the total time you can shoot
(without stopping). I believe that it is worse with Pentax because
they are using in-body stabilization, and as a result (because the sensor
is hung in the air for easy movement), the thermal sink is considerably
lower. Often, in a room-T environment, the sensor shuts itself down
after 20-some minutes of being on in the video mode.

HTH,

Igor

Interesting. Here's a page with some details abut shooting video on the K5

From what I have read, it is not possible to use AF during video
recording on the K5.

This shouldn't in itself be a problem - manual focus is much preferred for
video. If I shoot video on my Pen F, it is only with manual ficus and
manual aperture lenses.

If you want to use AF with video, you can obviously buy a camera with AF
for video, but they are not foolproof.

Plasmas are pretty much extinct. I bought the last of the Panasonic plasmas
when they discontinued that line, because they do have a superb and very
natural picture. But they weren’t profitable for the manufacturers. I also have

Yup Iryna beauty  is the one - most definitely my choice for the best of
the lot.

Not only do I like I best for beling the least contrived look but in the
other two (both of which I saw before) she looks heavier..

For your amusement, off list, I'll send you an old shot of me from 1955,

Re: 4k tv, monitor, watching movies, displaying photos

2018-01-24 Thread Paul Stenquist
The TVs all have a display mode meant to really pop in brightly lit stores.
That’s why they’re oversaturated. You can dial them in to any level you prefer,
and video buff sites frequently have recommended settings for different brands.
A 44 inch TV is very affordable these days. LG OLED models seem to be the best
right now, but most major brands of 4K TVs are very good.

In my (limited) experience, that oversaturated popping you see is the
whole intent. UHD adds an HDR equivalent process along with deeper
blacks, so exaggerated contrast is the result.

Ugly source material is also a factor. My setup came with a 4K UHD
Blu-ray of a kids animated flick (latest Ice Age installment) and it
was eyeball searingly awful to view. I will be tossing that disk onto
eBay I think.

BTW, in the fall I got a 4K UHD projector (Optoma UHD60) and Blu-ray
(Samsung UBD-M9500/ZA) and that acts as our "TV" as well as the main
purpose of screening movies. Watching films on a 100" screen is a
joyful experience. :) The Blu-ray is on the net and streams anything
we'd be interested in, like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube
documentaries, and a host of other stuff.

I spent some time fine-tuning the image through projector and Blu-ray
adjustments and I was able to tone down the saturation and crud so
movies look good.

Re: 4k tv, monitor, watching movies, displaying photos

2018-01-24 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Larry,

Just to address the oversaturated look at the stores:
It's a fad of the past NN years. So, I believe, the demo is designed to
run in the "high-saturation" mode, whatever it might be called with the
particular brand/model.

There are typical presets that are "sports, movies, entertainment, ..."
You might be able to use a remote and try to switch to a different mode
that would be more realistic.

Tomshardware.com used to be a reasonable source for reviews on such
devices. I don't know how bad they became in the recent past:

https://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-tvs,review-2224.html

I haven't been following the TV technology closely in the past few years,
although it is quite possible that we might have to buy a new TV in the
near future (as our 10-y.o. TV might be dying). So, please share back to
the list if you find some other useful resources.

One thing I have in mind is that all the technologies-du-jour (Roku,
Air-Play, ...) tend to be becoming mostly obsolete quicker than the TV
itself. So, it seems to me that it might be a more flexible solution to
buy these "smart" technologies as a separate box, as opposed to the one
built-in.

While I was watching the trends, Samsung was the best (LCD panels).
I wouldn't buy a plasma TV (if they still sell those).
I think OLED and QLED would be more expensive than LED, but they are also
MUCH more expensive.

So, LED or LCD would be the best bet on a budget.

Cheers,
Igor

work well for displaying my photos when it's not being used for movies and
TV. Since I'm at least within radio hailing distance of the real world,

images on them at the store are always over saturated, and pretty bad

2018-01-24 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Jack, Igor PJ and Larry.

This one of the better shots from yesterday. Unfortunately, we saw no
breeches, which are the real thrill and make the most dramatic images.

I worked on the image quickly, to get it out the same day, and will redo it
to try to get better contrast and color. One problem is that there was
some haze in the air from humidity, and that affects the clarity of distant
objects, such as the West Maui Mountains in the background of this shot.
>From a distance, the mountains do not show a vivid green, at least not on
the Kona (leeward) or western side, which is quite dry. Actually, it is a
bit greener than usual, as Maui had a wet fall and a rainy December.

When I first looked at the first photo, I realized that it was an attempt
of (re-)creating a particular style/image.
But, I must admit, I was ignorant of the "original" that you
(and Ann) referenced.

I too think that
"Iryna beauty" ( https://flic.kr/p/22BGEGw )
and "Iryna 3" ( https://flic.kr/p/23Cs9cf ) seem to be better because of
the muscle tension in the first photo in this thread (Iryna beauty 2).
(And despite understanding the style, I also didn't quite like the way the
hair was covering her eye in the first shot ("Iryna beauty 2"). It is
better in "Iryna beauty".)

But I enjoyed looking at the entire set. Thanks for sharing, Bruce!

Speaking of the retro hair styles, - just recently I was thinking about
those from 60s and 70s, such as
https://goo.gl/fivsmM (I wonder if you could recognize this quartet)
and
https://goo.gl/dzLXKe
For me, that's a memory from the childhood, and they feel quite a bit odd
today (and I like the music from that era).

I have a hypothesis that some type of "cycle" of the style generations
(I am not sure how many style generations, maybe 4 or 5, or maybe 40-50
years). And in that cycle, some of the generations feel odd to the
"contemporary" eye, while some older ones do not.

Obviously, there are sharp "rebellion" switches between the generations
(kids nihilistically reject their parents' style and create the one that
the parents could not stand) that are probably 15-20 years apart,
But then, maybe 40-50 years-ago styles can look cool. (And that's probably
because those were something that the parents had opposed as it was
their-parents', i.e. the "grand-parents" style.)
And that's why, flappers look cool today (that's probably 2 full cycles,
at 90-100 years). Note last (this?) season's fashion trend:

Re: PESO - a Miss Ukrainian Canada 2018 finalist

2018-01-24 Thread Bruce Walker
Is that this one that I captioned "Iryna beauty" ?

https://flic.kr/p/22BGEGw

Also, I just posted a lower key headshot of her:

Hands are so tricky, Ann. I made an effort to thwart her conditioned
tendency to "pose" and to catch a more candid and uncontrived look. I
thought that this one headshot ("Iryna 3") managed to best capture
that:

My neighbor Iryna found out last week that she had been chosen as a

headshots to give them. So since we had shot several times before she
 called me. :)

I used my family room as a makeshift studio and along with the
headshots I took the opportunity to get some other stuff, like this
 one.

Re: FS: Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED profesisonal medium format scanner

2018-01-24 Thread John
The CoolScan 4000 ED was firewire and the CoolScan IV ED was USB; the
CoolScan 5000 ED was firewire and the CoolScan V ED was USB.

I wonder why there was no CoolScan IX ED USB version to go along with
the CoolScan 9000 ED?

Sorry to hear that, John. Such it is.

BTW: All of the Nikon medium format scanners were equipped only with FireWire
to the best of my knowledge. At the time they were made, USB was considered to
simply not have the consistent performance required for the data volume they
move. That's changed over the years since, of course, but all the great Nikon
scanners are long discontinued now.

I have an excellent condition Nikon SuperCoolscan 9000 ED for sale.
It's absolutely the best film scanner I've ever used for everything from
scanning Minox 8x11 to 6x17cm negatives. Superb for 35mm work: automated scans
of up to 12 exposures at a time with a suberb, soft light source that minimizes
Works beautifully on macOS, Windows, or Linux with VueScan. I think I have the
NikonScan disks for it too, but am not sure.
It's in the original box and includes all cables, the original carriers, as
well as an ANR glass carrier too.
Price: I see recent sales on Ebay for this scanner in condition and with
equipment similar to mine that run between $2500 and $3200. The ANR glass
negative carriers usuall sell for $400-500. So a reasonable offer in the $2800
to $3000 range, not including shipping, for the whole kit is my offer for PDML
folks.
Shipping: It's a large, delicate, and heavy package and needs premium shipping
by a good carrier with full insurance. I would think around $100 would cover
most locations in the USA, but I'll do the research if and when someone makes
an offer for it.
Transparency: I'm also offering it on a couple of other photo forums I
participate on, and will likely post it to Ebay for sale in a week if there are
no inquiries from any of the non-commercial offerings.
