Covid Madness

2020-03-16 Thread jcoyle
Just returned from a small shopping expedition: found our local supermarket
with 30 metres of empty shelves where the meat is usually found, and two
metres of empty cold cabinet where frozen fruit is found. Lots of other
blanks as well: seeing that the car park, usually crowded, was half empty, I
deduce that the mad crowd has driven off to stage a raid on the nearest
alternative shops! If they've stocked up on frozen fruit, one understands
why they needed to buy so much toilet paper...

I quote from a friend's email:
Apparently the first person in Adelaide has sadly died because of the
coronavirus.
In his house they found 500 cans of assorted food, 100kg of pasta, 75kg of
rice, 200 toilet rolls and 30L of hand sanitiser, which he had panic bought
from Coles "just in case!"...

The whole lot collapsed and buried the stupid Prick ..

Very sorry to hear that, Larry - I am close to that situation myself, my

been advised to prepare for the worst. One can only ask for an easy transition.

Make that seven counties, Santa Cruz County is going to shelter in place. On
the bright side, if I can get off my ass, I guess I have an opportunity to make
some progress on a few of the crisis around the house.

Meanwhile, unrelated to covid-19, I was woken this morning by a text from my
sister. Mom is declining, despite the home being on lockdown they were working
on procedures for her to be with Mom at the end, unless of course Mom pulls
through again. A 1700 mile drive, however, is out of the question. I’ve
pretty much said goodbye for the last time every time I’ve seen her for just
over three years, and she wouldn’t even know I was there. I do wish I could be
there for my sister though.

All things considered, Mom passing is the best thing for everyone involved,
especially her, or what’s left of her. She’s been my mom less and less, and
less and less of the time since she broke her hip. I just wish that her passing
could go better than it looks like it will, though I honestly don’t think
she’ll know the difference.

South Africa is now in lockdown too. The authorities are trying hard to
contain it but the number of confirmed cases has shot up from 1 to 62 in
a week. Schools, Universities, Cinemas, Theatres, Restaurants, Churches,
etc restricted/closed. Serious panic buying started in the big centres
yesterday. It will likely spread to the Platteland in the coming days.
All sporting events have been cancelled/postponed until April 15th when
further announcements will be made. Sportsmen have been urged to keep in
training. No financial interventions yet. Stock market has fallen about
35% in 10 days, 12% yesterday after the US rate cut. The SA economy was
already in recession & now this.

I feel for you Larry, I wasn't going to talk about this but my mother
died a week ago.

I'd been taking care of her for the last few years, but her mind was
been fading.  It became apparent 5 months ago that it was beyond my
capabilities, to continue to be her caretaker,  so we moved her to a
nursing home.

For a while it seemed to be actually doing some good, she seemed to be
remembering more, but then she started declining again. Last Christmas
she had a stroke, which accelerated her decline.

I wasn't able to be there at the end, as I had a nasty head cold, and
couldn't expose other patents who might have had compromised immune systems.

I had luck...  T joe's only slightly crowded normal for a late afternoon
- but as I said I dont have to stand in line.. the aisles are wide and
getting around quickly was easy.  I wanted dark chocolate peanut butter
cups, spinach, taquitos (which I embelish somewhat and soften) and
cottage cheese and a small can of tomato paste.
I scored 3 of 5.   then stopped by my local favorite  Chinese restaurant
and picked up take-away lunch special, General tzo's chicken. It is the
last day you can enter a restaurant or bar here and sit down to eat in
the foreseable future.   I'm still able to walk outside as long as I
keep clear of others and still can go to  grocery or a drug store.   I'm
using a pretty scarf around my neck and over my nose more for keeping
warm and putting others at ease, and am well
protected with the approriate sani-goo on my leather gloves.  When I got
home I took abundance of caution steps and cleaned the outside of each
package
I bought with alcohol , emptied the contents into glass containers and
tossed the ones from the store and restaurant. I also left my cell phone
at home - one less thing to worry about being clean.

Re: OT Covid-19

2020-03-16 Thread Bob Pdml
That's an interesting read. A couple of weeks ago we were discussing this at
the end of my French cinema class (predominantly people in their 60s and 70s)
and I took the macho line that it's just a bit of flu. The following day I read
an article, which I can't find now, which put the worst case outcome as 5
million dead in the UK alone. That's some virus, that Covid-19.

So even if we aren't worried for ourselves I'm sure we all have many friends
and family who are at great risk and we would like everyone to try and help
them avoid the disease in the first place, and have access to the best possible
treatment otherwise.

I hope everyone looks after themselves and others as best they can.

Water is one of the few things it sort of makes sense to stock up on
in the event of the Zombie Apocalypse that people seem to be
preparing for.
Having said that, if one is going to stock up on water, it makes far
more sense to get 5 gallon water jugs and fill them from the tap than
to buy dozens of 1 liter bottles.

I buy distilled water in gallon jugs to use for ironing.

Once they're empty I refill the jugs from the tap & store them in case
we get a "boil water" advisory after a hurricane or something like
that. I've got enough stored to last a few days.

I also keep a package of water (24 sports bottles) in the car for the
dog & me when we're out and about. I got a new package a couple of
weeks ago - stocking up before I knew I was going to need to - so I
won't need to replenish that for several months.

But I don't think that's who he was barking at, 'cause I could hear kids playing
outside.

Prince does that too. Just as soon as I get up for any reason, he hops up on
my "work" chair. He usually gets down as soon as I come back into the room &
waits for me to sit down so he can get into my lap.

Right now, he's in the living room barking at the mailman through the front
door. The mailman doesn't deliver on Sunday, but Prince doesn't know that.

Sounds familiar. It got so bad that I almost considered seeing a doctor
which says a lot because I have a severe case of doctorphobia.

All was well again after about two weeks.

Ah, well, yes. I tend to shoot large fine jpegs in camera and as such, I set up
my gear for either black and white or colour (as if the camera was loaded with
either black and white film or colour film). That way, my mind is either tuned
in to mono or tuned in to colour, as so I tend to think in either of those
modes. It works for me.

>And when you do your PP is that Lightroom that you use?

I use Adobe CS6 which is basically a standalone version of Photoshop. I
organise my pics as files and folders right on the Mac.
