Re: Impressions from K-1

2020-08-24 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Thank you for your comments, John and Henk!

John:
Every so often I re-evaluate the grip option, and so far I was not
compelled to use one:
I have had Zx-5n, *ist DS, K-5, K-7, and with all of them, I've valued the
compact size of the body. Following your thought about the extra battery,
I've looked again, - but decided to hold off. After all a spare battery
takes much less space in the bag.

That relates to Henk's suggestion about the bag size.
I have a few bags: a huge one, a messenger bag, and a back-pack that has
not been used much recently.
The huge one (Tamrac Pro 12) is for when I am going for a photo-shooting
session or event, and need the convenience of quickly reaching for the
2nd body, or whatever...
I also use it as the 2nd bag with all the spares when I am on a car trip,
like the recent one to Yellowstone, etc.
That one couldn't be any bigger, or I'd need a pony to carry it, as my
wife has been suggesting for years.

For the past 7+ years, my "main" bag has been Vanguard Up-Rise II 33
Messenger Bag. (It's traveled to 4 continents.) The very important feature
of it is that it [almost] fits the size limit for the "personal item" for
air travel. So, I can not go larger.

Cheers,

Igor

Eventually you get used to the different control layout.

I have been using it for a bit here and there, but this was the first one

not new to them, so, my apology for boring you with my rambling. :-)

The first, and the biggest impression (which I already had before), - K-1
eats battery much faster than K-5 and K-7.

After some 430 photos in one day, the battery was almost empty.
Unless I am mixing it up, I seem to remember shooting some 600-800 shots on
one battery with either K-7 or K-5.

The second impression is that after a few months of using this camera, I
still keep pushing by mistake the live-view button on the left side when I
need the "view photos" button on the left side that used to be there on

the previous models.

One more observation: While putting the camera into my photo bag and taking
it out, I keep accidentally rotating the little diopter adjustment knob. In
K-5 and K-7, it was a linear slider, and it was hidden behind the rubber
shade.

Less often, I also accidentally rotate the "2nd" big knob on top - at the
most right position. Occasionally, I also rotate (accidentally) the "1st" big
knob on the right - the one that chooses the parameter being varied by the
2nd knob.
I don't remember ever having any knobs accidentally rotated on any of my
previous cameras (7, of which 4 were Pentax).

Otherwise, I greatly enjoy the camera.

I haven't done much of "shooting from the hip" with it yet, - but it seems to
be aiming right. (I had problems with that with one of the earlier Pentax
DSLRs.)

Thanks for reading!

Re: PESO - Morning Glory Pool

2020-08-24 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I will start with saying that since mid-March, we have been extremely
cautious in regards to the COVID-19, so your question resonates our
concerns. (One person in our family is also in a high-risk group.)

Our trip was planned on a relatively short-notice, just about 2 weeks
prior to the start, - as we wanted to have some vacation before the school
year starts. We did not want to fly, and we were looking for an
interesting place(s) with comfortable outdoor temperatures in August.
Badlands national park (in SD) was yet another candidate, but it was too
hot there. So, we went to Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks.

Because of the timing, we knew yet before going that the parks were rather
full: it is a peak season, I believe.
Both parks did a reasonable job for the most part, organizing the
traffic and crowd control: At some popular paths in Yellowstone, they made
some narrow trails (around geysers) one-way. They've limited the number
of people inside the big shops (although they completely failed to
maintain the distance between the people in the queue outside the store -
of those waiting to enter the store). At the Old Faithful Geyser, there
was a big line of people staying too close for the Covid season. We did
not go there, but found a moment when the line almost disappeared.

And there was human stupidity among some park staff, e.g.
one of the cashiers at that store insisted on touching every item we
were buying (when we had 3 identical ones), even though he could've
scanned those from our hands, or scan one 3 times.

Most park visitors were very considerate: wearing masks, keeping a
distance, patiently waiting for others to take photos from the
observation points, stepping aside when passing or going in the opposite
direction on a narrow path, etc.
But we encountered some Covidiots arrogantly ignored everything, even the
clearly marked one-way trails. Fortunately, there were just a few of them.

There was a situation (at one of the smaller observation points of the
Grand Canyon of Yellowstone): there was a couple that was taking their
time taking photos of the waterfall and selfies with it and the canyon in
the background. We (and another family) were patiently waiting to trade
places. Then a couple of groups/families came there and stood very closely
behind. I demonstratively and fairly loudly coughed. Someone from that
group laughed: they understood me, but did not bother to keep the
distance. That was the only such an incident that we've experienced over 3
days at those two parks.

The hotels/motels in that area were very full, so we were glad we had ours
reserved ahead of time. In the parks, some lodges were closed because of
the Covid, and many (all?) campgrounds were full. We stayed at a hotel in
Jackson, - and there they did not do daily service, which was good for us.

We avoided all the restaurants, buying food in supermarkets, and
making our own sandwiches, etc. in the park. We brought with us all the
necessary picnic supplies (plates, utensils, etc.).

BTW, before traveling, double check the state regulations on the
quarantine, etc. Many (most?) western states do not have quarantine
rules for the people coming from other states. But some (e.g. New Mexico,
which we just drove through, - touching a small corner of it) have them.

Here is the page that might be helpful:
https://www.cdc.gov/publichealthgateway/healthdirectories/healthdepartments.html

Also, keep in mind that some park facilities (lodges, campsites), remain
closed for this season. So, check that ahead of time.

Also, specifically for Yellowstone: one of the roads there is closed due
to construction: Tower Roosevelt to Canyon Village. (It cost us extra 2+
hours for the trip to Lamar Valley and back.)

HTH,

Igor

PS. My apology for the delayed response, - I've been writing it over
several days - with interruptions: our school year has started last week.

John Thu, 20 Aug 2020 08:22:18 -0700 wrote:

How did you handle the "social distance" thingy on your trip? My plans for
2020 travel have been a bit messed up.

Yellowstone was on my itinerary for this year, but I have several factors
that put me in the high risk group for Covid-19, so I've had to stay home.

Re: OT What's the L-mount?

2020-08-24 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Leica AG invented the L-mount. It first debuted on the Leica T (APS-C format)
in 2014, and was subsequently used on the Leica SL, SL2, TL, TL2, and CL
bodies. Along the way, the L-Mount Consortium comprised of Leica working with
Panasonic and Sigma was created and now all three manufacturers are producing
bodies and lenses utilizing this lens mount flange and control protocol.

Leica produces lens mount adapters for M-mount, R-mount, and S-mount that allow
use of all the major families of Leica lenses on L-mount bodies, and Leica
bodies used with the Leica adapters include lens profiles designed to permit
very high high quality use of all Leica lenses on Leica bodies. Third party
manufacturers like Novoflex, Fotodiox, and Rayqual, amongst others, supply
additional mount adapters for many other lens mounts to L-mount bodies.

L-mount bodies from Panasonic and Sigma include the Sigma fp and the Panasonic
Lumix S1. All of the Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma bodies designed for this lens
mount are "mirrorless" designs: It's what the L mount flange and mounting
protocol were designed for. It's an excellent lens mount and some exceptional
bodies and lenses have been created for it.

I've been using Leica L-mount bodies since 2015, starting with the SL body
released in November of that year and mounting on them my M-mount and R-mount
lenses. When I had the SL body, I also had the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm
f/2.8-4 ASPH and Leica APO VARIO-ELMARIT-SL 90–280 f/2.8–4 ASPH lenses (native
mount Leica full frame compatible lens). I switched to the Leica CL in 2018,
selling the SL body and native lenses in the process. My current Leica CL is
just about the best performing APS-C camera I've owned, and the SL was
similarly the best performing FF camera I've owned. Both have worked
extraordinarily well with all my Leica lenses, and with any other Nikon, Sigma,
Pentax, and Voigtländer lenses I fit to them.

PESO x2: Magnolia

2020-08-24 Thread David Mann
Our magnolia tree is blooming but due to it being shaded by other trees it grew
vertically and most of the flowers are too high to photograph.

I managed to snap a few photos of this one starting to open. It's one of the
lower flowers but I needed to shoot with a long lens at a shallow angle to get
a decent background.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1079/#peso

I moved slightly for this one so it doesn't have the green blob.
http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1080/#peso

The little black spot is a small insect.

Pentax K10D with FA*400mm F/5.6, handheld (with a few quiet expletives directed
at the AF)

Cheers,
Dave
