PESO - Morning Light

2013-10-02 Thread Bruce Dayton
I was going through some older photos and came across this shot. I don't
recall sharing it before. This was taken in the film days, so I can't remember
all the details.

I believe the camera was a PZ1p and the lens was an FA 28/2.8.

2013-09-07 Thread Bruce Dayton
Thought I would take a stab at posting a PESO. Haven't been doing this for
quite a while and decided to try Flickr as Aperture can post directly to it.
Much quicker and easier than dealing with the HTML on my own site. I'm open to
suggestions from the group if this doesn't work too well.

Anyway, here it is taken at the golden light of sunset:

Very impressive. And it's the dynamic range that has me interested. I
never upgraded my K20D to the K7 because I didn't see a significant
difference in image quality and didn't really need the other advances
it offered.

But I can tell you that since buying the Sony A850 I've hardly touched
my Pentax gear. Not because of the resolution of the full-frame sensor
(though it's certainly nice) but because of the huge improvement in
dynamic range the A850 offers over the K20D. Mike Johnston mentioned
the DR of the Sony in his full-frame round up
(http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2008/12/sony-vs-nikon-v.html)
but I didn't believe how good it was until I started shooting with the
camera. I took some shots in New Hampshire convinced that I was
wasting my time because I didn't think it would be possible to get the
shadows without losing the highlights or vice-versa
(http://www.robertstech.com/galleries/franconia1/7da02723.html) and
opening the raw files up in Lightroom was a revelation.

For me, the write speed was the big improvement over the *istD. I don't recall
using af on it very often. The K20 was an improvement in af but I still
manually focus it quite a bit. The K-x is much better at af than the K20 and I
suspect the K7 is even better. Give them a few more models and they might end
up with an ok AF system.

Of course I never bought in to the Pentax system because of AF...grin

Re: K7 or Kx

2010-09-01 Thread Bruce Dayton
One has to wonder how he came to that conclusion. Seems you would actually
have to try all the cameras before relying on that.

Perhaps it would be better to try the camera in question before making that
broad of a generalization.

Changes in sensors and support firmware can have a big impact on these kinds of
things. Not to mention design goals of a particular camera. It is much like
saying all lenses are sharpest at 2 stops from wide open. We know that isn't
accurate because lens designs and goals affect that.

use a flash. So I have to at least ask what ISO you are shooting at? Also is
this the popup flash or a clip on? Have you considered boosting iso up to 6400

Re: K7 or Kx

2010-08-31 Thread Bruce Dayton
Funny thing about the low light question...before I got a K-x, I didn't shoot
low light much without a tripod but that was really because my K20 and earlier
cameras couldn't shoot low light. Now that I have a K-x, my shooting
techniques and style s have been changing due too the new capability. So the
K7 represents the best of shooting the old way and the K-x represents the
opportunity to do some new and exciting things. For me at this stage, I would
go for the K-x. If you buy from BH you have some time to return and exchange.
That would be ideal. Get the K-x because it lets you try things you haven't
done before. If you find you aren't delighted with it you can return it and
get the K7.

For me, at this point I never use my K20 anymore unless my daughter is using at
the time I need it. Given the choice, I always pick the K-x over the K20.

I do like your comment But K-x has a sensor second to none. I think
Canon and Nikon might contest that. Of course, it could be a better
sensor than the K7. I'm not one that too fussy about micro-artifacts
 however.

I've used both the K-7 and the K-x and my advice is simple:
1) Do you shoot mainly in good/reasonable light, using ISO 100 to 400 and
add flash in low light? Go for the K-7, which is an overall better capable
camera for sure.
2) Do you shoot with available light? The K-x is far better for that. IMO,
all of the K-7 pluses put together cannot compensate for the huge difference
in image quality in favor of the K-x above ISO 400.

Whichever you choose now, it is likely after Photokina you'll want to jump
all feet on such camera and replace it with one of the new ones for a good
reason :-)

Re: K7 or Kx

2010-08-31 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello John,

I have both the K10 and K20 and the low light on the K10 is much
worse, as you have experienced. The K20 and K7 have basically the
same sensor so the low light performance between them is very
similar. There are a few who think the K7 is better and a few who
think the K20 is better. Be that as it may, the K-x is at least as
much better than the K20 as the K20 is compared to the K10. Did I
say that right. The step up from K10 to K20 is big, but the step up
from K20 to K-x is even greater when it comes to low light
performance.

Yes, the shot needs the little catchlight removed, as you noted, but
overall, the need to image process for high ISO is significantly
lower than with the K20.

Best regards,
Bruce

One big difference for me was that with the K20 and earlier I really had
to have good conditions (lighting, processing, etc) to make a high
ISO shot reasonable. For instance, when shooting weddings I could
take a couple of shots with the 50/1.4 lens close to wide open and no
flash, then process to remove ugly color cast and grain, etc. The
resulting image would possibly even need to be turned to BW.
Basically, this meant that the shot was not the norm, but the
 exception.

JS I don't shoot a lot of high ISO.

JS My experience with the K10 and K20 is/was that the K20 is better at ISO
JS 1600 than the K10 was at ISO 800. At ISO 800 the K10 gave really sub-par
JS results; at ISO 1600 the K20 gives adequate results - not great, but
JS adequate.

JS Maybe I got a better sample of the K20 than I did of the K10, but that's
JS the way I experienced it.

With the K-x, it is totally changed. Straight out of the camera, ISO
6400 is looking quite good - no extra work. So now I have shot
entire receptions with no flash and no heavy post processing. Even
more so, simple snaps of the family in situations where I would have
used a flash in the past, I no longer need to. Gathered around the
dinner table talking in the evening or playing a game or one of the
kids receiving an award at school, etc. The ability to shoot
consistently at high ISO (1600+) is a real game changer.

ISO 6400, 85mm Soft Focus lens, no post processing, shot right after
 dinner:
 http://www.daytonphoto.com/PAW/imgp1200-1.htm

JS Needs just a bit of post processing.

JS Good photo, and I can see what you mean about the low noise capability
JS at high ISO, but that one highlight at the inside corner of the eye just
JS reaches out and smacks you right in the face.

Good question, with only opinions for answers. First off you have to ask
yourself what the primary use of this camera will be. Any professional use or
strictly amateur. The K-x is extremely well speced and is a bargain. It is
very small and light and handles well. It is also tops when it comes to low
light work.

The K7 is a pro build, solid workhorse that is really designed to be used and
abused. Everything about it is excellent. The one weakness is the sensor
isn't as good at low light a the K-x.

So I see it as the K-x is your choice if low light work is a major issue or if
the camera will be used moderately. The K7 is your choice if you are looking
for a real go to camera that is going to be used a lot.

the Kr and K5. I have about $900 but the Kr looks a lot like an
upgraded Kx with the same sensor. I can go with the Kx and get a
couple of kit lenses for about $100 extra (the 18-55 and the 55-300)
or just blow it all on the K7. there are lots of advantages to the Kx
but the K7 might make a better compliment to the E-P1. Also, this
body has to last a bit. Since I'd like to start spending future funds
on lenses, especially since I'm now keeping two kits. Thoughts?

BTW, any opinions about how long I should wait for the best to within
$100 Kx/K7 price?

Re: The Pentax Photo Gallery

2010-08-27 Thread Bruce Dayton
You have a good memory. I did resubmit a few. I found no rhyme or reason to
the decisions made. Images that had been accepted before were rejected and
images that were rejected before were accepted. Sometimes a rejected image
would be resubmitted and then accepted, etc. So between all that and the
extremely clunky interface I finally gave up and moved on. I haven't really
been back since. It has been a rather long time.

Bruce, I clearly remember your pulling your 50+ images with the explanation,
if I recall correctly, that you intended to resubmit them to determine if they
would be accepted under the current standards.
You may have been one who began to submit images early on and at a time,
perhaps, when submission were ravenously accepted in an effort to develop a
gallery. As time passed and the gallery inventory increased, standards for
acceptance seemed to stiffen.
It was my assumption that you wanted to test your images against the current
and seemingly more stringent standards. I recall the respect and admiration,
actually expressed by some, you garnered by so doing.
From time to time I checked your gallery in the hope you would be pleased at
the rate of re-acceptance. Haven't done so for awhile.

Re: I think I'll keep the k7 :-)

2010-08-15 Thread Bruce Dayton
Was there really any doubt? I don't think I've heard of anyone desiring to
stick with the K20 given the opportunity to have a K7. I'm glad that you like
it.

Christine Aguila cagu...@earthlink.net wrote:

Shooting with this camera, for me, is quite different than the K20. My
rhythm is off--I'm behind, and the K7 is ahead of me. I've been working on
keeping up. :-) One factor involved here is the K7's sounds are
different--lens focusing and shutter etc--I can barely hear anything, which
is good, but it's thrown me off a bit. Funny how you get used to the sounds
of a camera. That horizon level is amazing. I certainly do A LOT less crop
adjustments. I didn't use the creative filter options on the K20, but I'm
having fun with the K7's filters--pretty fun, in my view. Love the
fish-eye, watercolor, and toy camera filters:
http://www.caguila.com/caguila/k7play

The view finder is great, and it's easier to see through. I'm not shooting
with the battery grip because I haven't purchased it. A part of me would
like the vertical buttons, but I have to say, it's been so much fun shooting
with a really light camera. That K20 is a tank, especially with battery
grip.

Moving through a crowd with the K7 is fun. It's so quiet. I can get
closer, and I'm quieter. Of course, if you get noticed, you get noticed,
but if you don't and take a picture folks aren't going to hear much. I
worry a lot less about exposure due to the K7's improved exposure accuracy,
and find I'm not chimping as much--though I do some--but still this is
quite liberating. Post-processing seems quicker--less cropping adjustments
et al.

If the rumor is true that a K5 is coming, it's going to be really
interesting to see what the improvements are.

So, I think I'll keep K7. I know I'm singing to the choir here, but I just
wanted to get my say in :-).

More testing and play here. Comments welcome. Cheers, Christine
P.S. I know there are two color pictures in this black and white gallery,
but I just couldn't get rid of the playful purple. :-)

PESO - Monument

2010-08-13 Thread Bruce Dayton
Last week my family was in Maryland at a reunion and visiting the DC
area. One evening we did the walk around the monuments in DC. Here
are two different views of the Washington Monument - one at dusk and
the other at night. The vantage points are very different as well.
And yes the second shot was at ISO 10,000 - when you are walking with
a family who are anxious, you don't have much time. I didn't even
attempt to take a tripod, just relied on the K-x high ISO.

I've been asked to photograph scenes from the play My Sister Eileen which
will open tomorrow night at a university near by. The shoot will take place
after a Friday night performance, and the producer said normally the shoot
is about an hour long. The cast is small (9), so I think I've a wide enough
lens for a cast group shot. I've requested a comp ticket, so I can see the
show before the shoot, and they've kindly agreed.

I'll be looking for good dramatic scenes, of course, and I've been told that
there's nothing exotic about the lighting direction for this play--just
standard stage lighting. Has anyone had experience doing theater shoots?
Any tips or suggestions you'd be willing to share?

Thanks in advance.
Cheers, Christine

Not to be overly contentious, but the Pentax MX viewfinder had for me
the same issues I had with the Olympus OM1 and Nikon FM series
viewfinders: too much magnification, not enough eye point distance for
me wearing my glasses. I had to work to see the whole frame and find
the metering information and camera settings. The high-eye point
viewfinder on my Nikon F3/T, Olympus E-1, Panasonic G1 is FAR superior
... I can see the whole image at a glance, as well as all the
in-viewfinder exposure settings and metering indicators, with no
strain. And the G1 finder is perfectly visible in light levels that
leave the MX with a 50mm f/1.4 lens like looking into a black hole.

I hear this kind of praise of old 35mm SLR viewfinders all the time. I
think it's mostly just wistful fondness for things past.

BW That's just bad luck for glasses wearers, not wistful thinking. I would take
BW the MX viewfinder over the E-1 finder any day (other things being equal).
BW One reason for wanting a 35mm-sized sensor is to be able to get decent
BW viewfinders again.

Well, I can really relate to Godfrey on this one. Up until now, I
have managed with mostly contacts my entire life. There was a short
stint where I was wearing glasses and I really didn't like shooting a
camera, because of the lack of eye relief.

At age 50, and with astigmatism, it looks like I will be heading back
to glasses shortly to allow me to see near and far well. I have been
doing the trick of monovision where one eye is corrected for near and
one for far, but finding that to not work as well anymore - have done
it for several years. So when I put on glasses and look through my
K-x vs my K20D, the K-x is a bit easier to see everything than the
K20D.

John Celio n...@neovenator.com wrote:

A happy ending to my stolen bike saga!

When I reported my bike stolen, the police and others suggested checking out
the local weekly swap meet. This morning, a friend picked me up early and
we headed over there. By mistake we ended up missing the parking lot
turn-off and parked in the swap meet area. By pure luck, we parked two rows
down from a big van that was FULL of bikes, and by even more luck my bike
was one of the two dozen he had pulled out and set up in his stall.

Now, as I mentioned in the original thread, I had never written down the
serial number of my bike, so I couldn't just go claim it. I called the
police, who showed up and said that if I could identify it as the same one
from the description in my police report, they could probably convince the
seller to turn it over.

The seller was in no mood to cooperate and was very argumentative with me as
I explained every mark and scratch on the bike. He had stripped off almost
all the accessories I'd put on it, but there were clear distinguishing marks
that I had described on the police report that were still evident.
Eventually one officer pulled him aside, and after a few minutes the officer
came back and told me to take the bike, it was mine. He later told me he
had asked the seller for his business license or tax info, neither of which
he had. When the officer said he would be forced to run a check on all the
serial numbers on all the bikes in his van for stolen property, the seller
quickly said he'd let me take the bike if we'd leave, and that was that!

I wish I'd been smart and written down the serial number, because then the
seller might actually be facing criminal charges. Who knows how many stolen
bikes he's fenced for thieves? I've resolved to keep a record of every
serial number of every item of value that I have, starting with my bike and
camera equipment, so that the next time this happens I will be better
prepared. Live and learn!

John

RE: Feed Us Your Photoblog--The Solution

2010-06-30 Thread Bruce Dayton
Well Tom, you have worded my feelings exactly. Blogging and twitter just seem
like so much information I don't want to hear about. I don't have enough time
as it is to want to sift through all the 'noise' to find the few tidbits I'd
like.

GESOs are a similar thing for me, though not nearly as bad. Time to view them
all and comment is almost not worth it. Actually I will spend about the same
amount of time on one photo as a whle gallery - so you can surmise the type of

clicking on the inevitable thumbnail in the blog to get to the larger

And finally maybe, somewhat rudely, but not intended so, I find a blog
a bit akin to watching someone's home movies. They tend to mean much
more to the creator than to the audience, and so come across, to me at

hi,

haven't been contributing all that much to the list though i *have*
been looking at most of the pesos posted. :)

saturday i am catching a three-hour flight to new delhi, spend a couple
of days shopping there and then take a 20-hour bus journey to a village
in the upper himalayas from where i am starting my three-week bicycle
ride. i am hoping to cover roughly 900 km in about 18 days, through a
road which will take me through five high altitude passes (the highest
of which is about 18,000 ft). this road remains under snow most of the
year and usually gets open by may end. due to unprecedented snowfall it
only got open last week so it's going to be a bit of a rough ride. i've
prepared as well as i can. hopefully i'll go out and enjoy it now... :)

unfortunately i am not taking my kx with me as planned. three of us had
planned this trip. the other two have dropped out, if for genuine
reasons, i am doing the ride alone now, so have to take other
essentials. i am just taking a ps with me, the fuji f70exr. hopefully
i can still bring back some interesting snapshots.

there should at least be a couple of places en route having mobile
network. i'll be updating my progress as and when network becomes
available on my blog: http://jeyan.wordpress.com
do drop in if you feel like it... :)

catch you all later, regards, subash

Re: *ist DL?

2010-06-25 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Eric,

You seem to be bouncing around between different models. Maybe you
could tell us better what your target price is so that we could hone
in on models and deals that would work well for you.

From a practical perspective, the older models will be slower to
shoot and have smaller screens on the back. For example, I started
shooting with an *istD - eventually aquired a second. While shooting
weddings one really big issue was write speed to the card. Basically
it took about 7 seconds to write a RAW image to the card. So the
buffer was about 6 images. Now with a processional with of
bridesmaids and groomsmen this could be a huge issue. I would need
to shoot faster than once every 7 seconds. When I upgraded to a
K10D, the write speed for a RAW file was about 1 second - this
becomes a very reasonable rate.

So the older models are going to function much slower - meaning take
the shot and how fast it comes up on screen after and how soon you
can shoot again when the buffer fills. K10D and later models really
don't have much issue with write speed - a really long sequence could
cause problems depending on buffer size, but for most people, not
really an issue.

Re: *ist DL?

2010-06-25 Thread Bruce Dayton
I was actually more trying to help Eric understand where some of the
big differences between older and newer models were. Image quality
is much more subjective and so is AF speed and so on.

When I go back and pick up my *istD and compare it to the K10D, K20D
or K-x - what immediately jumps out at me is the slower speed of
shooting (shot, write, review - including waiting on full buffer
sometimes) and the tiny review screen. Most other aspects don't
bother me nearly as much.
