Re: wide angle comparison
I just applied the lens profile in Lightroom to "correct" the fisheye view to rectilinear... Nothing fancy. For me, the takeaway was: not much gained on the wide end of ff once you get down to extremely wide focal lengths, but you don't want fisheye & so you have to correct distortion/crop into image. I've been shooting lots of interiors lately, seems like doing that with 8mm could be a bit much, probably exteriors & astral photos are more suited. -c On May 2, 2016, at 5:38 PM, Darren Addy <pixelsmi...@gmail.com> wrote: Very interesting demonstration, Christine. So, for all of the other visual learners out there, who don't bother with FOV conversions & charts (The rest of you move along, lest you be tempted to reply: DUH...) Recently, I had the need to explore the ranges of wide angle lenses. I have the 12-24mm for my k-5ii, but was curious how much wider I could reasonably expect to get ... lens repair record!
Eight days ago, I shipped my 16-50 off to Precision Camera for a new motor. Today, it arrived back on my doorstep. Along with the hood, and front & rear caps. Everything fits as it should, and... AF appears to be working as well. Someday, when it stops raining & snowing, I'll take it out for the brick wall test, but, so far, so good! Makes me feel a little foolish for letting it sit for 18 months in need of repair... But, I must say I was pleasantly surprised at such quick service. Way faster than the last time I sent a lens out for repair. For the record - new motor, cleaned inside & out, plus 2 day return shipping was $214.. Onward & upward! -c -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The camera arrived this morning, just as my wife an I were heading out to for our semi annual visit to the town where I grew up, with the purpose of dropping a couple flower pots on my parents' graves. So here are some test shots with the newly converted camera - no interesting compositions but just tests of the cameras abilities: http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/testing-ir-converted-nikon-p6000?blog=9 Those iamges went through the same basic process - a little boost to contrast, clarity, and saturation in ACR. One in Photoshop I ran macros to switch the red and blue channels in PS and apply the PS lens correction filter to remove the distortion. then just a quick adjustment to level the horizon and crop if needed. For virtually automated processing - the results were great. I am surprised at how well the camera meters - very accurate where with the K10d I had to do a bit of adjustment with each shot. The conversion cost $150 and was done here: http://www.isaacszabo.com/infrared.html The K-01 would cost the same to convert but a Pentax DSLR would be $200. The other thing that has changed is when I have Library set up to show photos in subdirectories, then I highlight a bunch of photos, and then use create subdirectory to move them into the subdirectory, all but the first one will get unselected. Re: Lightroom 6 pano upgrade
Hi Christine! Cool pano... I need to try that out myself soon. I also just did the LR6 upgrade... From LR 4... And had to bump up my OS to 10.10 from 10.6(ish?). I wish I could report that everything went off without a hitch, but... I think I'm past the worst of it now. I'm sure you'll do fine if you add RAM. What could go wrong? ;) I have tried the HDR feature in LR6, though, and it is very interesting. I've been doing some architectural work for a client recently, so getting the HDR feature in LR was a major motivator for doing the upgrade. I'm hardly a connoisseur of HDR, but it seems to me that I'm getting very similar results in the merge as I do when I take the -1 exposure run it through some basic adjustments... Down on highlights, all the way up on shadows, plus a few others. I'm going to continue to play around with it see... I did read somewhere that using fewer files for the HDR merge (in LR) is better than using several. Also warrants experimenting with, I think. And Larry - I also came upon a work-around for getting past the limited adjustment range in those HDR images: export the merged file as a tiff, re-import into LR. Bingo, sliders are re-set, and you're off? Haven't tried it myself, but there you go. -c On May 12, 2015, at 2:42 PM, Christine Aguila christ...@caguila.com wrote: Hi Everyone: How goes the team? Anyway, I had some frames to try the pano feature; the process is easy peasy, though my result wasn’t so good due to some sloppy shooting on my part. I didn’t get the overlap right in a few of the middle frames, which you can see below. This pano is a total of 6 frames—the file is humongous! It took 7 minutes to merge. I notice a difference in speed with the upgrade, which is saying something since I still only have four gigs of RAM, and I play iTunes in the background while working on photos—LR 6 is a bit quicker over LR 5 with the two apps running. I really do need to increase my RAM, but I confess to being chicken—I’m afraid to unplug everything to install the RAM. Always worried I wouldn’t be able to get everything running right again. Any words of encouragement would appreciated :-). Later in the week I’m going to experiment with the HDR feature. Should be fun. I also wanted to add a caution: I've never looked or tried, but before investing in any additional equipment, I'd check if the current Pentax DSLR firmware allows _LIVE_ displaying via HDMI. I know that some cameras that have HDMI connectors only allow playing recorded videos via them, say on a TV, not live display while you are shooting. Re: Boston update about the blizzard
Reporting in from 15 or so miles south of Boston.. I'd say it's every bit as bad as was hyped. We have a solid 2 feet at least, and it's still coming down pretty heavily right now. And it's not light fluffy stuff, either. My parents, who live on the coast another 10 miles south, have a serious breach of the sea wall in their neighborhood after this morning's high tide. Many of their neighbors are under water, and news crews are doing their reports from a half block away. My folks, whose house lot are sited relatively high, are dry, so far... But as the next high tide approaches, we fear that may not last. Shooting different styles (high key; low key) in a small studio you have to be careful not to have overly powerful strobes. Many photographers have a selection of sizes, eg 400 w-s and 200 w-s, because most strobes only cover 5 stops of light output. That's the case for the Elinchroms, and the Alien Bees are only one stop better. Your Pentax flashes cover 7 stops, full to 1/64th power, which makes them very flexible. With the 9 stop range of the Einsteins you can have a powerful key light on the subject and just a lick of light from a second unit on the backdrop. It covers from 640 watt-seconds (great for overpowering the sun outdoors) down to 2.5 w-s. Other reasons: the CyberSync radio xceiver can be installed internally, and it's cheap ($30); small size and weight; Paul C Buff reputation for service and support; excellent value for the money (factory direct sales); good selection of reasonably priced modifiers from PCB. Re: AC adapter for flash? peso included...
Thanks, Bruce, Bruce Paul! I was aware of the battery pack... and that might be just the ticket if I were out shooting weddings such, but I was looking for a solution for more of a studio space... Easier to just plug in there than mess around with batteries, etc. And wouldn't I like some monolights for Christmas this year...? I have a friend with some Alien Bees that I have admired... Bruce W, which PCB line are you going with, do you think? Any particular reason you choose those vs d-lites? I think I had the 360 540 set at 1/2 power for this shoot... Probably could have adjusted iso for 1/4 done a better job keeping up with squirmy toddlers. Not being able to shoot continuously when using flash really changes the game when shooting little kids... Thanks again, guys, I appreciate your thoughts! -c On Dec 7, 2014, at 7:01 PM, Bruce Walker bruce.wal...@gmail.com wrote: Great kids portrait, Christine! As Paul mentioned, no AC adapter for the Pentax flashes. I think the TR battery pack is very much overpriced, and you'd be much better off with monolights. The Elinchrom D-Lites are well-priced in kits. You are in the USA, are you not? Then the Paul C Buff series are available to you and are really good value. If you need portable from time to time the Vagabond will power them (or D-Lites) in the field. The monolights also give you a modeling light and audible indication of recycling ready. What I do to get useful recycle times with flashes is set the flash at 1/2 or 1/4 power and up the ISO a stop or two to compensate. ISO 200 or 400 should work fine. With fresh batteries, at 1/2 power the AF540 recycles at just around a second; at 1/4 power it's almost instantaneous. By the way, using two or more flashes in tandem will get you back your light power. Used at 1/4 power you get speed too. If you are getting recycle times slower than that then you may have one or more weak cells in your set. Some battery chargers test for weak cells. I use a little jig with a flashlight lamp to apply a load and then I measure the voltage drop at the battery. A good cell will only droop a little, while a weak cell will drop as much as a volt. But I'm getting really tired of the whole song and dance around flashes and batteries so I'm gifting myself some Paul Buff monolights this Christmas. Sally's story is slightly complex. Her owners had a fenced in back yard which kept their other dog nicely confined, but not Sally she could leave and return anytime she liked. Easily jumping the five foot fence. They finally figured this out and apparently gave up. The fence is being removed and Sally has the run of the neighborhood. This is both good and bad for Sally, she gets to explore and visit all her friends, however if she isn't home before everyone has to leave she's condemned to stay out until someone arrives to let her in. This is what seems to have happened today, so after running over to greet me and my Cocker Spaniel, she wanted me to let her into her house... Smart but not smart enough. Single pane construction, though we have installed a piece of tempered glass inside of it. This is as much for safety as insulation, as the window is about 6 ft square, and comes nearly to the floor. On the outside of the frame, there are weep holes that allow moisture to escape, after the frost melts. ;) Thanks to all for the kind comments and to everyone who had a look. :) -c On Fri, Jan 10, 2014 at 8:27 PM, steve harley p...@paper-ape.com wrote: on 2014-01-09 18:47 Christine Nielsen wrote In a lovely change of pace today, I got to just mess around with my camera the 100mm macro ... Interesting report, Marnie, thanks. He also said that USA Pentax reps are the last to know. They may know a little in Japan -- but only when Ricoh/Pentax actually comes out with a public release do they find out. I went on the trip with a friend, and he asked later too, and he was simply answered, no. Overall, the answer seemed to be very much, no. OTOH, I asked about Ricoh's support of Pentax. Very much so -- this will be one company that will not drop Pentax or sell it out. They are heavily invested and very much behind the brand name. The Pentax display was understated and tasteful, except for the scantily clad Japanese girl sitting on a chair, pushing a button on a toy train running on a track below her. Photo op, supposedly. There were scantily clad girls in a few places, CES is male-oriented. Evidentially there were more girls in previous years, but each year brings more and more women attendees to the show. There was a wall of K-50's, not quite sure why. The big poster shot of the GR was taken with the K-3, and that is partly why it was there, to show how large it could be blown up and not lose resolution. Paul's pic had an end spot, and really was one of the best there. :-) Okay, about the rest of CES -- it was not the primary purpose of my trip. I went with a friend and just wanted a trip, also saw Las Vegas, a ghost town, Red Rock Canyon, and the Bellagio fountain and some of the casinos (I don't gamble). So I did not ask a lot of questions a lot of you would ask and did not look at lot of things a lot of you would look at. I was also not solely interested in photographic equipment. I also went under an assumed identity, heh, as a audio/visual design person (smart houses). This show is mainly for dealers who are going to put in large orders for products. Nothing is on sale to the public. So I did brief tours of two halls, well, three and a half halls. Other Cameras: The Nikon display was similar to Pentax's, a bit bigger, lots of yellow. And one seating area with a video running about some camera. Pentax had no video seating area. No scantily-clad girls at Nikon. The Canon display was much, much bigger. The emphasis there was mainly on their printers and other imaging products. They did have a small walk-thru photo gallery. And a tier of cameras. A shot of that is in the gallery above. At first when I saw it I thought it was photographers taking shots of the show. Then I realized they were actually cameras to try out and went up and tried some. That was clever of them and they were the only ones that did that. No poles locking the cameras down to a hole in a display table. The two dancing girls there were wearing pants and T-shirts. WTG, Canon. The Sony display was one of the largest and a bit confusing. It had a 'surround' video running above -- it covered a very large area with their products inside, much bigger than it looks in my picture. The camera I was, personally, most impressed with and taken by was the Fujifilm (yes, moving on) X-M2. Which the rep told me had just started being shipped in November. She only had one, it was so new, although she had several X-M1s. CES: The show/convention/conference overall, was overwhelming. It is HUGE. Most people were there to do business and see specific items. If you didn't have a focus it was pretty confusing. Lots and lots of booths, but the most overwhelming part was simply the massive number of people walking around. Almost worse than Disneyland during summer. About 150,000 attend, so it was busy, busy all the time. Most were wearing black. The racial/ethnic mix was mainly White and Asian. At least the shuttle buses between venues were good (there is a three-hall convention center, two stories, and things spilled over into three other hotels). I had very interesting discussions with a cable company owner and a representative of GSM (Global Standards for Mobile)

Re: studio gear lust
I borrowed that very set-up from a friend a few weeks back for a headshot-type shoot. It had the white backdrop, which was a canvas... I feel like it might be on the heavy side for a shoot-thru softbox, but maybe. All in all, it was kind of nifty. It all stashes in a bag, and goes together pretty quick. I think it was a normal light stand (though not the most heavy-duty), or at least, could be used with one. Easy to set up, lightweight... but definitely would be a sail in the wind. LR question... Exporting catalog for rating, etc...
Hi all, I have been gathering together onto a single drive all of the various family (digital) photos we have taken over the years... And now they are all organized by year, and imported into LR 4. That was the easy part... Now I'd like to be able to go through them, select favorites, rate them, make some collections, etc. Eventually, the goal is prints, probably in blurb book format. It feels like a big job. My workspace is not in the house. I'd like to be able to export a catalog of files onto my laptop, and while I sit on the sofa in the evenings, go through the rating, collection-izing, etc. Then, sync this organization back with the main catalog. I wouldn't really do any image editing, just organizing. I think I can do this... Maybe one of resident LR gurus can confirm...? An initial search for info didn't turn up a quick answer, but I'm probably not searching the right thing... If anyone knows of a link to more info, that would be helpful... Thanks! -c -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: facebook post about being the community photographer
So... as a parent who does shoot a fair amount of photos of kids at games, recitals, etc., I think I understand what you are driving at. I do not want to be in the position of feeling taken advantage of, or taken for granted as the community photographer. Especially since, I am a photographer in my community, and I would like people in my community to occasionally pay me for taking photographs. Here is how I approach photo-taking sharing at these kind of events: - Unless asked (paid) to shoot an event, I attend, and shoot, as a parent. I'm taking photos of my kid, and his/her friends. I shoot for the enjoyment, the family album, and the practice. Once or twice a season, I will try to get photos of everyone at the track meet, for example... just as a courtesy, or contribution, to the team/organization that my child is part of... I share a link to the photos on my website, in web-size, often with my watermark. Kids families can share, link, download, post to facebook, whatever. They can order prints, too... which rarely happens, btw. -That should tell you something right there. Even well-executed photos of kids (or dancers) doing their thing, aren't really selling like hotcakes. (Unless you are a pro, hired to shoot the competition/performance, and you are hard-selling parents on prints before they leave the event. I'm not interested in that.) So, I don't spend a ton of time making these photos for others. -Often at these events, there is someone (a parent), who is in charge of getting photos of the team doing their thing... that's fine. (see above, why nobody buys photos) I try very hard not to be that parent. They are there at every event, shooting away, and then usually dump their images onto the team website. Those images are different than mine... they are fine snapshots, but not what you or I would want to show as representative of our work. (If I can say so without being arrogant) I like to think that how I share present my images communicates that I value them differently. -For friends... actual friends... I will share digital files for printing, or send them prints. So... my advice to you (it's worth what it costs) is shoot as much as you like at dance events. Process post as much as you want, as much as you feel it is worth. But no more than that. :) -c On Mon, Oct 7, 2013 at 3:29 PM, Larry Colen l...@red4est.com wrote: On Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 08:19:11PM +0100, Bob W wrote: Indeed. I think its great that Pentax at least decided to offer some enticing features on their entry level models, but you know, even something as simple as a tilting LCD would have made a new camera at least *seem* worthwhile. Honestly I don't know what's going on with Pentax/Ricoh currently. I see a lot of wheel spinning but no real progress. How many times have you heard or given the advice that one of the most important characteristics of a camera is how it fits in your hand? I could see how changing the body of a camera could make a huge difference. If I had not been on the cusp of getting a K-5, the different shape of the body would have been a major incentive for me to upgrade from the K-x to the K-r (or since it's still talk like a pirate day, the K-a). By the same token, I could see how a re-spin of the K-01 that wasn't butt ugly could be a good thing (though I'll admit that it felt surprisingly good in my hands). If the flagship camera were still the K-20, or even the K-7, and they were just spinning new versions with no major improvements, I'd be seriously looking at a D7100 about now. However, there are very few pictures that I'm missing with the K-5 II, that I'd be able to capture with any camera that costs less than two or three times as much. There are probably shots that some other $800, or even $1600 camera body out there can get that the K-5 II can't, but I haven't run across them. Mind you, I would love for Pentax to come out with a new body that would compell me to upgrade, because in order to do so, would mean that it was infuckingcredibly amazing. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

K-30 vs K-50 vs....?
Hi all, A friend of mine has been looking for counsel on cameras... He is a fellow hockey (and soccer and football) parent, whose ps isn't getting the job done, and is ready to move up to a dslr. He has been looking at the Nikon Pentax offerings primarily, and seems to be settling on Pentax. Low light performance is critical for him -- he'll be using the kit lenses (55-200, 55-300), trying to get decent images in a hockey rink. So... the question is, which model? I'm not turning up much difference between the K-30 K-50... is there? For that matter, will prices on the k-5/k-5ll come to a comparable point (soonish)? I haven't used the k-30 or k-50 myself... But, I know that the collective experience wisdom of the List will have something to say on this... Re: K-30 vs K-50 vs....?
Thanks, Darren. I picked up a K-5lls about a month or two ago, but I haven't had to use it for low-light/fast-action (hockey and indoor track seasons are coming soon...) scenarios yet. I'm looking forward to it, though. :) -c On Thu, Sep 19, 2013 at 8:42 AM, Darren Addy pixelsmi...@gmail.com wrote: I can't speak to either the K-30 or the K-50, but I can tell you that the low-light autofocus performance of the K-5II is NOTICEABLY better than the K-5 (which is still a camera that I would recommend without reservation). I'm not sure if the K-50 shares that improvement, or not. But the K-5, K-5II and K-5IIs are all 14 bit systems, where (I believe) the rest are 12-bit. The sensor is good enough to take advantage of that extra headroom in the form of dynamic range (and some better low ISO performance). The K-30 and the K-50 share a 13EV dynamic range, where the K-5II is 14.1 (that's more than a full stop better). I think the K-5 is a Best Buy right now (you can still find the body for around $650) The K-5II is about another $250 ($896 at BH) and if he wanted to spend another $250 I would tell him to also consider the Nikon D7100 which is like getting the K-5II performance with a 24MP body ($1149 for the body). So all things being equal they should have the auto focus performance. If it's between those two models which you'd choose is a matter of taste. I can't say if either will give good results auto focusing those lenses in dim light, but while they will be better than a PS the best way to improve auto focus is to use fast(ish) lenses. Zooms are convenient, but a used FA 135mm 2.8 would probably cost less used than the 55-300 will new, and run rings around it in auto focus. Just something to think about. The K-5 is already in the K-50 ball park at a number of web retailers, but I don't think it improves much in auto focus over the K-30/50. The K-5II, which by all accounts is a vast improvement over the K-5, is about $250 more than the K-50 if you find can find a deal. Re: OT - Skunk!!!
Ugh. My condolences. Our dog has had the same bad luck, a few times... the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/detergent mixture does the trick for us... though I think you are supposed to let it sit for several minutes before rinsing. Bathing a cat has its own challenges, I imagine... good luck if you have to go for round 2. When I was a kid, I remember one steamy summer night the dog got out found a skunk. In her alarm at being sprayed, she ran around the house several times, and the odor poured in through all the open windows. I rinsed off his eye gave him a shower and three washings with a hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and detergent mixture.
