Nice picture. Funny pose that one, just like a stork.
It is remarkable that the legs of the great egret can be orange or black

I asked Copilot AI, which replied that during the breeding period the
legs get red and the beak black.
Here a picture I took here some years ago (in breeding period) of two

We also see the little regret here, which can be determined by its

For me it is incomprehensible that all smartphones have GPS but most
DSLRs and mirrorless not. For landscape and nature pictures it is so
useful to have it on my K-1. If GPS seems to easily fit in a flat phone,
why not in an APSC-C? For me this is another step forward to kill real
cameras sales in favour of smartphones.
The use of apps or the clip-on GPS module are cumbersome in the field
and are only stopgaps.

Even adventure cameras like the new Pentax WG-90 do not have GPS.
Exceptions are the Ricoh WG-6 (for as long as it is available) and the

phone.

Re: has anyone tried the new firmware update?

Larry, the new firmware V2.40 for K-1 and K-1 II has been corrected and
is out now as 2.41. I guess it should be safe now to update.

For K-1: https://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/k1.html

In a related note, has anyone tried using the third gen astrotracer in
conjuction with an equatorial mount? It seems to me that if the equatorial
mount is even reasonably close, the computational astrotracer could do an
amazing job of fine tuning.

Re: Pentax K3 III Monochrome Review

2023-12-20 Thread Henk Terhell
Their conclusion is that K-1, having a similar cost price as the K-3 III
monochrome,  provides the same quality in monochrome mode. It would have been
better to have a monochrome version of the K-1. Otherwise there are no
important negative comments, except of course the absence of a flippy screen is
mentioned.

Van: Larry Colen

He generally does fair reviews, but I can't take the time at work to watch it,
though I can get away with occasionally checking email.  Can you summarize?

I'll guess:
If you can afford $2200 for a body that you only use for monochrome, you get a
stop better performance and better effective resolution.  It'd be great for
astrophoto buffs that don't care about color.

Re: PESO: porcelain fungus

2023-11-15 Thread Henk Terhell
Thanks Larry and Paul.
Larry, I used a pocket flashlight above the mushrooms. Part of the light on
the edges is already shown on the raw pics which are in focus.
Final sharpening amplifies this edge effect I guess.
In focus stacking I introduced some ghosting effect (my enemy) that I have
to remove in photoshop or affinity photo but it is a precise job.
The surface in these woods is of course not at all solid so touching the
camera on tripod to change focus may introduce movement.
The remote control is useful though.
The K-1 with its tilted screen is a fine camera for this work but the lack
of built in focus stack is a great handicap.

V39 scan samples

2023-11-14 Thread Henk Terhell
(Second try responding to Stan's post:)

The photo of your grandmother is not sharp, so not much is gained by any
resolution > 300.
The pic of your granddad is likely a professional photo and this will
provide somewhat more details at higher resolution (> 300). However what
gets worse is that part of the right side of his face is shown to be
covered with weathering effects of the picture surface (fungi?), which
makes the end result at higher resolutions unacceptable in my opinion as it
would not be easy to retouch. Sharpening and adding more contrast in
photoshop will make this weathering even worse.

Strange, gmail nowadays doesn't show me all pdml posts.

About my butterflies photo, of course English is not my mother language,

Thanks all for your nice comments.
Ann, I never pick any of the mushrooms as I've not been educated or trained
to do this, though I recognize some of the most common ones.
And in the store you can buy (without risk) cultivated mushrooms for little
money.
By the way, I wish Pentax cameras had a focus stack feature as I have to
manually change focus for stacking with the risk of a change in camera
position.
Usually I put my camera on a plate on which an Arca Swiss clamp is mounted,
to get lower than a tripod with a ballhead.

2023-04-30 Thread Henk Terhell
Nice pictures, in particular the lepelaar.
It looks to me that LR Denoise AI does a pretty good job here.

I have installed LR classic now.
Without heavy cropping I usually don't have to deal with noise on my APSC
and FF pictures.
However I tried last week new LR denoise successfully on some ISO 3200 K-1
pictures taken at a concert where the background was completely black.

Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction

2023-04-23 Thread Henk Terhell
I've been using quite some years now LR version 6 (the last non
subscription version) in combination with Affinity Photo version 1. Working
in DNG RAW and converting to JPEG and TIF. This gives me at very low cost a
lot of flexibility. Affinity Photo has all the extra features I need such
as focus stacking, panorama, HDR and has excellent tools for sharpening and
noise reduction. However, many of my lenses are not in the LR database. It
appears that Adobe is making these days a lot of progress steps compared to
competition with subject recognition, improved noise reduction and now
Firefly AI. My conclusion is that it is time for me to switch to the Adobe
subscription model that will cost here 144 euro/year.

This video puts the finger on the weak spot in that for street photography
a bulky DSLR nowadays upsets a lot of people.
I do recognize however the beauty of B/W for such type of photography.
Speaking to a street photographer the other day he told me that he mostly
shoot from the hip with a tilted screen so it looks like he is inspecting
his gear or his stored pictures. The X100V would be my choice if I was
serious in this type of photography.
