RE: Pentax? You know, I used to have a K1000. What ever happened to them?

2012-12-21 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
When I bought my *ist-D the local, (30 miles away local, but the only
surviving). Camera store still carried Pentax. So I actually got to
hold one and try one out before I bought. The more or less local Ritz
camera store, actually had a K10D and a number of lenses in stock, but
was even further away, (gone now and not much lamented). I have no idea
how Pentax expects to gain market share especially as you can see Nikon
and Canon products in pretty much any big box store.

I have been pondering this for quite some time now. A few years ago some of my
family members went to China. I wanted some Pentax gear but the locals said
Pentax wasn't popular there so no presence in stores. This October my wife went
to Singapore and I had high hopes for some gear - again, no presence in any of
the shopping malls. I got a hold of one address that carries Pentax but there
was no time to get there.
We have one chain that is kind of the official Pentax dealer here, can even see
the 645D on display. But again - no presence in any of the other stores in
contrast to Canon, Nikon and Sony.
Pentax gear might be good (even if we have to take things like DxO ratings with
a pound of salt) but no first time customers will ever know it. The only store
that sells Pentax here is on a roll with Sony now and the only sales rep that
was ever passionate about Pentax there hasn't been seen for the last 4-5 years,
probably retired. So even if they are a Pentax dealer they are currently
focused on selling boatloads of Sony gear.

I don't see any real reason for me to jump ship, I just have to ask myself if I
am getting and will continue getting a good deal on Pentax if they can't sell
enough cameras and lenses because of the lack of presence. Ultimately as a
customer I am paying more just because of their inability to sell and they
don't have the money to make anything better because I can't possibly pay them
enough to make any considerable difference to the RD budget.

the ice-loving peoples of the world are one of Pentax's largest
markets, Frank. I'm surprised you don't know that. Just last year alone
sales reached nearly double figures, and there's rumoured to be a
special edition coming out that smells of herring.

 B

We have a few days of -20 to -30 Celsius almost every winter here. Pentax are
the only cameras that feel at home in my igloo at those temperatures. I would
pass on a herring-scented edition, though. Somebody might accidentally eat it.

RE: Cameras and Photography

2012-12-10 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
If I had money I would not switch systems. I might buy a Fuji x100
or x1 Pro, or were I flush with funds might buy an M9, but those
would supplement my dslr, not replace.

Frank, I should (semi-jocularly) warn you that if you try Fuji x1 Pro
or x100 you may (like me) pass the point of no return. I still
occasionally shot with K-5, but is is extremely occasionally as my main
 camera now is Ricoh GXR.

 Boris

I have been playing around with the annoying x-pro1 for the past couple months.
My spouse poses the following question Why on earth did you have to go out and
spend so much money on a camera that gives crappier results than the one you
already have?. While I don't have a definite answer to that rather than a
grumble that I do take more pictures now, don't I? I must admit that Pentax
K-5 is still my favorite, I just wanted a new toy.

The thing is getting quite a cult following despite its quirks and not having
many lenses. That gives me hope for a Pentax full frame. If they do it right,
they don't need a full range of current lenses, a decent commitment would
suffice.

Some extra x-pro1 quotes from my Pentax-conditioned spouse:
The pictures from this camera look wrong.
Aren't you done yet? You could have taken ten pictures with your Pentax
already.
This lens cap is the most awful design I have ever seen, it just doesn't stay
on.

Stupid off-brand Pentax adapter won't mount the 50/1.2.

I don't need or even want the extra bells and whistles of the other cameras but
when Pentax comes out with a higher megapixel or full frame body I will get it.
Until then I will be content with my current gear, it does work well for me.

I wanted to. My wife was in Singapore recently and Lytro was supposed to have a
shop in the airport terminal but she couldn't find it so that's one toy I won't
be getting. Pentax missed their window with the K-5IIs too.

My original idea was to have a toy for myself and the kids in the hope that my

RE: K-mount 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.2

2012-12-04 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
Don't bother with the f/1.2. It is nice and all but price/performance
  is totally unacceptable.

Kris, I have to disagree with you on this, at least in regards to IQ.
I have 3 copies of the Pentax 50/1.2 lenses and while they are a bit
dreamy wide open, when stopped down a bit they are very good - as good
as or better than my Pentax 50/1.4 lenses, especially when considering
rendering. As to cost, no argument there - they are very pricey today.

They are beautifully made examples of the lensmakers' art from the era
before plastic fantastic became the order of the day, and as a
collector I'm glad to have them. Of course YMMV...

 Regards, Jim

I knew I was going to get in trouble with the f/1.2 crowd :)
Here is the original email I replied to:

My 50mm f/1.7 is my favourite lens, but I'd love to try a 1.4 or even
a 1.2, for the extra light.

 Daniele

Let me rehash my point. The 50 f/1.2 is nice. Very nice. But they are only
manual focus and you wouldn't be able to casually focus it at f/1.2 in low
light anyway. Unless your eyesight, hand-eye coordination and viewfinder
precision are well above average and/or you use static targets. And if
sharp-ish eyes and blurry nose/ears is your thing or you are not going to use
it at f/1.2 at tight portrait distances.

The going rate for the FA50 is less than half of the various 50/1.2. You get a
little more real extra light over the f/1.7 and autofocus for that. I would
get the FA50/1.4 right away if my f/1.7 wasn't autofocus or if I had a buyer
for it.

I never made any comments about 50/1.2 being inferior to other 50s at f/4 or
anything to that effect. I said it was nice, what more do you want? :)
It is, however, a specialty lens with an appropriate price tag.

The reaction from the non-photographer members of my family when showing them
kids pictures made at f/1.2 has always been This is nice and all, but if only
you had used a real lens, we would have decent pictures now. Yes, apparently I
aim to start a holy f/1.2 war here.

Probably. One way I am going to make this easier on all the participants is
that you can submit pictures for future dates and you don't have a tight 24h
deadline for submitting your versions on the current dates. You could easily
take a month off or work only on weekends if you submit a few pictures in
advance. I don't see this as an exercise in technical perfection or a contest,
rather as a game.
I have a picture before me, what do I see in it? What do others see in it?
You can aim for some consistency but you will probably fail unless you
replicate all the scenes with Q-tips or cats or something.
Definitely not a quest for a single good picture a day that would fit the set
criteria. More likely an ongoing experiment in perseverance.

RE: Help!

2012-12-03 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
I know that you've received other input and probably will have solved
your problem via a USB import from the camera. But I am wondering
whether this was a Lightroom issue or a Mac-OS issue. It would be
interesting to turnoff LR, then insert your card and try to copy the
files from the card to your HD; then later import to LR from your HD.
Another thing I would try, as with any recalcitrant external drive,
would be to see if you can see the drive (i.e., your SD card) from
within Disk Utility. If so, you might try to Repair Disk . . . It may
turn out that the OS is less fussy than LR and may allow you to get to
your images without too much drama.

 stan

I have seen these kinds of messages when the operating system marks the volume
as in need of repair. Usually it doesn't mean much, Windows even offers to
repair it for you. In any case you should probably reformat the cards in
camera after you get the pictures off of them.

The moth - I desperately want to kick somebody in the nuts

2012-11-13 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
So I opened the FA135 up last night. On the outside it looked like Pentax
service had never even gone inside. On the inside - sure they had been there.

I bought the lens new from the local dealer around 2002, it was the last one in
stock here but it was still new and from the dealer.

Somebody had tried to force the back element open with the wrong instrument,
markings on the barrel would suggest they failed. Also the moth stuff inside.
Removed the aperture thingies only to find one of the biggest screws in there
was badly damaged by somebody with background in changing wheels, not servicing
fine instruments. Jackass, Philips power drivers should never ever be used on
JIS screws. Aperture spring being glued in place and not swapped out for a new
one is a minor nitpick in comparison.

Didn't want to take it apart completely - helicoids and all - so I tried to
unscrew the rear element with a properly softened large area of contact tool
(just dumb oversized pliers with rubber pads) and it worked. So I removed the
empty pupal case (no sight of moth itself) and all the debris.

Here's a picture for those of you who got this far:
http://foto.ri-ki.lv/details.php?image_id=104

Properly cleaning the lens would require total disassembly and even then I
don't know if it would be any good. Those monsters weave their cocoons and
strands of that weave are between elements even further inside the lens. Even
if I could open it up that far I don't know if I could completely remove
everything.

So that's it probably for this lens. I will test it against my other sample but
there is no real reason for me to use it anyway when I have the other one. I
don't see a good way to clean it so well that there is no sign of the moth ever
being there so it can't be sold either. I might go through the adventure of
disassembling it completely, cleaning it and putting it all together but I
don't see that happening before the kids grow up :)

Pentax should probably know about the sad state of service in Europe but I
don't see a way to get this information to anybody who cares. If service at
Pentax authorized service centers takes half a year and is performed by idiots
who only make things worse, somebody should care, no? Oh well, I feel better
already.

We will see how it progresses...

I hope my story is not indicative of any general trend and your lens gets well

Sigma 20/1.8 has become my go-to shoot-everything lens lately despite its size

2012-11-09 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
USB port that according to promo on dpreview.com will allow not just
changing lens firmware but also things such as micro focus
 adjustment.

What's the point of focus adjustment on the lens anyway? Unless it is for
fine-tuning the distance scale on the lens itself, I would think it doesn't do
anything. Focus is determined by the camera body, not the lens. Am I missing
something here?

RE: FA135 service story and advice needed

2012-11-08 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
I think it may be worth your while to contact someone from US of A as
the idea that FA 135 cannot be fixed for the problem you're having
 sounds very strange to me.

 Boris Liberman

My desire was to get real Pentax repair people to tackle the problem as they
might have access to Pentax-specific calibrating/testing equipment for the
final stages of putting the lens back together. I don't think I should to go
through the trouble and cost of sending the lens to USA, there are enough
generic repair places here and the cost would be like 1/10th.

And yes, it sounds very strange to me too. But I guess it's the way things work
in 21st century, if it's not a current product, you might as well forget about
any authorized service people even touching the thing. I am just angry it took
half a year of it traveling Europe for me to get this message.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will think about it. Customs would be my biggest
concern.
Probably a good moment to confess that I have another one in my hands already,
couldn't take the news of it being unfixable. Now that I know they didn't even
try to open it up the decision of its fate comes down to my future plans for
this lens. I don't see it selling for much in the current condition and am
afraid there might be some permanent damage to coatings even if it could be
cleaned easily.

FA135 service story and advice needed

2012-11-07 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
Some of you might remember my FA135 that a moth took hostage. Long story short
there is a dead moth right behind the back element. If nothing else, it is
messing with focusing, so I would very much like to get rid of its carcas and
debris.

So half a year ago I went to my local Pentax dealer and the lens was sent off
to be fixed. After long travels to the Czech Republic and Germany it finally
came back today. Nobody has even tried to take it apart. They say they can't
fix it.

So my question is - do I try to take it apart or give it to some local
repairman to attempt a repair? I haven't seen any schematics floating around
and have no idea what it would take to remove the back element but I have about
as much trust in a nondescript repair shop in a basement somewhere as I do in
my own fingers.

I've never held this lens before, but rear elements are generally the
easiest to remove; I've removed quite a few in order to get to oily
 aperture blades.

I'd REALLY like to see a photo of the dead moth! :-)

 Cheers,

Unfortunately it sounds a lot better than it looks. Just some whitish debris.
More than half a year without food and water would do that to anybody.

FS Friday: Sigma AF 180mm F3.5 APO EX MACRO

The old non-DG non-HSM version of the lens.
I always had good results with it on my *istD and K10D but I haven't used it in

There's no reason for me to hang on to it. That said, there is also no reason
for me to sell it other than to fuel my own LBA.

Today I saw an ongoing auction for one just like that on the evil auction site

turned off by its European origin (customs and all) and are ready to offer
something in the ballpark of the current bid on the one that's on the eekbay,

For an experiment I need the mount from something like the M50/2.
Anyone got a trashed Pentax brand lens cheap?

 Collin Brendemuehl

When I needed something like that, the cheapest and ultimately best option was
to get one of the Chinese reverse adapters off of the ebay (search pentax
reverse adapter). They are cheap and shipping on them is cheap too. What sold
it for me was that I had my pick in the width of the flange and didn't have to
deal with the pain of butchering a lens.

 John

I carry it in my bag, always. I have the M version, though. I have no idea how
that compares to the A but it is a solid metal and glass antithesis to the
megapixel and sharpness cult most people belong to. I put it on my K-5 every
now and then to admire the view, to appreciate the shallow DOF, maybe even (god
forbid) to make a blurry picture or two. It would be my one and only lens if
only I could persuade my family that pictures consisting of 99.9% blur and 0.1%
of what seems somewhat less blurry are all the rage. I love its character and
the way it makes me feel. I would be hard-pressed to produce a handful decent
pictures that I've taken with this lens and if pictures - the end result - were
more important to me than the actual picture taking process - the journey - I
would probably never use it again.

expensive (I checked the prices in USA, and they are even lower than
here). But the benefits are there. It takes no time at all in editing

concept but does it really suck all that dust?

Sucking has always seemed to me like the most worthwhile cleaning activity
because it has the greatest potential of actually removing dirt that has not
yet glued itself to the sensor. You don't really need a lot of power to suck
out dust and especially with the Pentax stabilized sensors I would avoid using
high power for the fear of breaking the shake reduction.

As for whether this particular solution sucks.. I have no experience.

Have had this problem a few times when buying obscure motorcycle parts
from the outer reaches of the galaxy. Now, I send the seller a text
version of my address and ask them to print and stick it on the parcel
as British postmen are notoriously bad at reading. I've never lost
 one using that method.

Haha, paypal gives them my address and that works fine for most cases unless a
phone number is also required. The main problem here is that nobody knows who
TNT Post gives their packages to at our end, our national post and EMS can't
recognize their tracking number and TNT here doesn't deal with normal mail.
So even though I might have tracking information for the package I don't even
know who to harass about delivering it or how they could identify the package
even if they had it.

At first I had decided not to sweat it and just make the seller resend it at
their expense but the more I think about it the less confident I am that this
package will ever surface at either end
...and resending it seems like yet another gamble.

2011-04-15 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
At least one of these has been mentioned in PDML - flickriver
(http://www.flickriver.com/), stumbled upon another interesting one today -
lightables (http://lightables.net/). IMO it works even better to get a quick
overview of a flickr users photostream without going through all the troubles
of clicking the thumbnails.

The only problem I find it ATM is that I can't seem to get a way to link to
somebody directly without resorting to using another address (probably not
meant that way by the creators), for example to see Larry's cliches I had to
use the address http://marchaumann.net/ltbls/#ellarsee

Can they really replace a proper T/S lens ?

A couple days ago I sent this little gallery of a T/S lens I made - no
real-real-life shots yet (damn weather, work):
http://foto.ri-ki.lv/categories.php?cat_id=6

I wouldn't think a real lensbaby could replace a T/S lens because even their
best lens is sharp only in the center. At least for me it is way too
expensive for what it provides. Also depends on the precision you need for your
adjustments.

homemade tilt/shift lens (more or less)

2011-04-09 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
Looked at lensbaby prices, checked the market for K-mount tilt/shift lenses and
cooked up my own for a fraction of the cost. I am fully aware that I could get
more movements with a bigger MF lens and 50mm might seem an odd choice but here
it is:

The Kreativ-NIKKOR 50mm/1.4 CVA TS
http://foto.ri-ki.lv/categories.php?cat_id=6

CVA stands for continuously variable aperture not only because it is stepless
but also because it is way too easy to accidentally change it at the moment :)

I can get infinity focus with small movements (both tilt and shift), adequate
movements at portrait distances and very nice closeup capability.

Basically I wanted something lightweight of portraity length with decent
low-light and wide-open performance that could be adapted without much hassle.

I've never managed to get anything by them... have you?

Every once in a while. TNT and DHL always cause serious problems, EMS that
isn't routed through any of those usually passes through as if nobody cares.
The main problem I have with them (TNT/DHL) is that it takes so much time,
additional costs and babysitting to get your package through them that the
higher shipping costs they want for their service are ridiculous.

This one is being processed by TNT, if I were to try and pick it up from
customs myself I would spend around 6h on a workday+driving all over the city.
They are supposed to deliver to my door but on items that they have given to
the customs they do that only if I pay extra.

All extremely well done, Bruce! CC; #31 appears slightly red and I'm
trying to decide how well #33 works for me.
 Wonderful lighting!

 Jack :)

Now that you say it, #31 IS slightly red, I think it works for me but will see
if a little adjustment is in order. #33 is more of a documentation piece - it
was a portrait session so I don't think there are going to be any more of those
full body shots from other shooters.

Available light is something I am more comfortable with so ISOs of 1600 and
more are my natural habitat. K-5 really shines here - better noise and more
megapixels means I can retain more details.

Alas this portrait session has led me to feed my LBA - F85 Soft and K50/1.2 are
in the mail... My wallet weeps but the LBA monster can sleep.

Thanks for comments - Paul Sorenson, Paul Stenquist, Bruce, Steven, Charles,

GESO: young females - request for comments

A couple were shot with an IR-modified K10D and the others with the K-5.
 http://foto.ri-ki.lv/categories.php?cat_id=5

Some nice work here, Kris. You must have had some fun!

I like the close framing, and the standout shot for me is #6. The girl's
happy, mischievous expression makes this shot really engage.

People were begging her to pull the dress lower to reveal more skin. She was
teasing and I snapped one while the others were busy flirting.

I have problems with the lighting in a couple where the lighting ratio
seems to be reversed; the part of the subject's face in focus and facing
us is quite dark. And of the two IR processed shots, the first is
interesting, but the second one kind of creeps me out. The effect is
cool, but strikes me as inappropriate for the subject, so the shot
doesn't work. You'd need the subject to look more goth or something. As
it is she looks like a smiling corpse.

I was basically just stalking around grabbing shots, people were setting up
lights to look right generally from a very different position. Was just too
much hassle to push into the pack taking into account that I was not one of the
class. Point taken.

The IR ones are IR - I could color them in by hand or just make them warmer.
Thanks for pointing the second out, its way too easy to get carried away.

BTW, your link isn't loading up for me now (4PM EST), so I'm rather
going from memory (I saw these shots this morning).

Should be working now.
Thanks, your comments are much appreciated and help me look at those shots with
a clearer head.

RE: K-5 dynamic range

2011-03-17 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
Here are two examples of the AF540 not firing, when shooting at ISO
 200:

One each as it came out of the camera, and after auto-tone in
 lightroom.

 Color me impressed.
